THE PEOPLE OF CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH GATHER

THE WORSHIP FEBRUARY 1, 2015

OF

GOD

FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

11:00 A.M.

We are an ecumenical, multi-racial, multi-ethnic Christian body that reaches out to the world with the Good News of Jesus Christ. To that end we strive to be welcoming, responsive, trusting and prayerful in everything we do. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

COMPASSION IS THE HALLMARK OF JESUS’ GOD. Consequently, Jesus’ healings and exorcisms are not simply patches on bodies destined for death. They are manifestations of God’s reign on earth, here and now—a revelation of God’s mercy, a promise of the restoration of all things.

A man was possessed by an unclean spirit. Seeing Jesus, the Spirit cried out, “What do you want with us? Will you destroy us?” “Be quiet!” Jesus said, “And come out of that man!” The man shook. The spirit shrieked. It came out. And, everyone was amazed. ...Mark I:2I-28

In the early church baptism itself was an entry-exorcism, freeing the initiates from the delusional system and false naming that had previously held them in bondage. Jesus’ teaching is a kind of exorcism, as well—a cleansing of the mind of all the misinformation, the un-truth that enslaves people to the false powers of this world. And, faith is an exorcism of blindness, that is, humanity’s trained inability to perceive God’s presence and deeds even when they are happening before our very eyes. —Walter Wink, Engaging the Powers, adapted

O God, you are the unsearchable abyss of rest, the ineffable sea of love, and the fountain of all blessings. Water us now from the riches of your grace. And, from the sweet springs of your kindness, deliver us from all that is false, and make us children of quietness, and heirs of peace. – St. Clement of Alexandria (c. 150-215), adapted LIGHTING THE ALTAR CANDLES WELCOME
