We are an ecumenical, multi-racial, multi-ethnic Christian body that reaches out to the world with the Good News of Jesus Christ. BECAUSE OF HIS UNDETERRED OPPOSITION to apartheid, Reverend Beyers Naudé (1915-2004) was expelled from his Dutch Reformed Church, was rejected by his community, and was “banned,” placed under house arrest by the South African government. “THIS BANNING,” he said, “ will not stop me from loving people…from following Jesus Christ...it will not rob me of my inner freedom. Through prayer and by God’s grace I’ll never allow this to break my spirit. It will never rob me of the conviction that the evil of apartheid will crumble and disappear, and that one day our land and her people will be free.” Early, while it was still dark, Jesus went out to a lonely place to pray. Simon and the others were looking for him. When they found him, they said, “Everyone wants you. Come back.” “No,” he said. “I’m moving on to do what I came to do—to preach the good news!” –Mark 1:35-39
“THERE IS NOTHING MORE EXHAUSTING than the constant awareness that one’s life is being lived at cross-purposes. What we long for is the energy that comes from a concentration of one’s forces in a single direction, toward a single end.” — Howard Thurman (1899-1981), African-American Baptist minister and influence on Martin Luther King, Jr., The Inward Journey
G ATHERING FOR WORSHIP PRELUDE During the Prelude, prepare for worship by centering your heart with this prayer by Howard Thurman:

Lord Jesus, open unto me—light for my darkness, courage for my fear, hope for my despair, peace for my turmoil, joy for my sorrow, strength for my weakness, trust for my doubt, forgiveness for my sin, tenderness for my toughness, love for my hate. Lord Jesus, open unto me—thy self for my self. Lord Jesus, open unto me! LIGHTING THE ALTAR CANDLES
