BECAUSE OF HIS UNDETERRED OPPOSITION to apartheid, Reverend Beyers Naudé (1915-2004) was expelled from his Dutch Reformed Church, was rejected by his community, and was “banned,” placed under house arrest by the South African government.

“THIS BANNING,” he said, “ will not stop me from loving people…from following Jesus Christ...it will not rob me of my inner freedom. Through prayer and by God’s grace I’ll never allow this to break my spirit. It will never rob me of the conviction that the evil of apartheid will crumble and disappear, and that one day our land and her people will be free.”

God, our Beloved, in our worship may we be so overwhelmed by the beauty and power of your love that we drop all attachment to that which distracts and binds us, that which makes us fearful and anxious. Before your grace may all burdens fall from our backs until we see ourselves only as you see us—children, loved and forgiven. And then, set free, may we rise with singleness of devotion and purpose to sing your praise and to live for Jesus Christ as his faithful followers, doing good and making peace. Amen.

G IVING AND S ERVING BLESSING THOSE CALLED TO SERVICE ON THE CALVARY BOARD AND DIACONATE There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but they all come from the same Spirit. There are different ways to serve the same Lord, yet the same God works in all of us and helps us in everything we do. The body of Christ has many different parts, just as any other body does.

A body isn’t really a body, unless there is more than one part. It takes many parts to make a single body. Together you are the body of Christ.

—1 Corinthians 12:4-5, 19-20, 27 Thanksgiving for those who completed their service in 2014.

Questions for those called for service in 2015.

Do you trust that you have been called to serve God and Calvary Baptist Church? We do.

Will you be faithful to this call, doing your tasks with care, diligence and joy? We so promise.

Will you challenge us to be the best we can be, to live up to the things we say we believe and to our calling to share Christ’s love with all the world? We will.

Question for the congregation.

Will you be faithful to these servants by honoring their leadership, offering encouragement, praying for them, and serving beside them? We will.

Loving God, we thank you for these sisters and brothers whom you have called to work within this church family. We give you thanks for their following of Jesus and for their willingness, by your grace, to serve us. As we commission them for their ministry, we ask your blessing upon them. Guide and equip them so that your church would grow in peace, love and unity—and that your name be glorified in all the earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
