THE SEASON OF LENT, structured as it is to remember the journey of Jesus to the cross, is the perfect time for articulating the call of Jesus to discipleship. In these forty days we contemplate not only the power of the cross of Christ, but also the power inherent in taking up our own crosses. Opportunities are daily before us, times when we may give our lives sacrificially to acts of love, compassion, justice, and peace.

IN THIS SEASON we are wise to ponder not only the cross in our sanctuaries, but the sight of Jesus on the road to Jerusalem, calling those who would be his disciples to take up their own crosses and to walk with him.

Beloved, we praise you for giving yourself to us in steadfast love. Thank you for the salvation and grace that is for every person on earth through your Child, Jesus. Assist us, we pray, to so worship and live that we may never shut our eyes, nor bar our hearts, to the travail Christ willingly endured for our sake—nor close our ears and turn away when we are asked to share with Christ in the way of the cross. For your glory we pray these things.

Romans/Romanos 4:13-25 Pastor Erica 13For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. 14If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. 15For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation. 16For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us, 17as it is written, ‘I have made you the father of many nations’)—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. 18Hoping against hope, he believed that he would become ‘the father of many nations’, according to what was said, ‘So numerous shall your descendants be.’ 19He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was already as good as dead (for he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb. 20No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, 21being fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. 22Therefore his faith ‘was reckoned to him as righteousness.’ 23Now the words, ‘it was reckoned to him’, were written not for his sake alone, 24but for ours also. It will be reckoned to us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25who was handed over to death for our trespasses and was raised for our justification.

And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, ‘Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.’ 34He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. 36For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? 37Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? 38Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.’

Merciful God, we talk much about faith, yet often are slow to take its risk. We seek forgiveness, yet often are stingy in giving it. We gladly enter into your presence by grace, yet set restrictions before everyone else. We praise love, yet have placed conditions on our loving; we urge others to hope, while holding on to doubt and despair. We have honored the cross of Christ, yet have avoided our own; we boast of our faithfulness, but turn back when the way is difficult and we grow weary and tired.

O God, deal with us for our betrayals of the Gospel. By your Spirit enter our hearts and there reveal, judge, cleanse and reform us. And may we rise as Christ’s faithful followers, known for practicing what we say we believe with deeds of love and mercy, ever walking in ways of justice and peace, welcome and grace.

Let us state together the truth God’s people have come to trust, by the witness of both scripture and Spirit. Today’s witness is about putting faith into action by taking up our own cross. (Inspired by Romans 8:37-39, John 1:14, James 1:22, and Micah 6:8) We trust in a “with-us” God who came to us in Jesus to share our humanity—to take on, in love and on the cross, our brokenness, our weakness, our pain, our hopes and dreams.

We affirm that in asking us to take up our own cross, Jesus calls us beyond the safe places—to join him, with vulnerability, in entering into the lives of others with love.

We commit to work for justice and to put ourselves on the line—to live faithfully, to speak truthfully, to act confidently, ready by love’s power to face humiliation

and loss in order to stand with those who need our presence and our voices, with those who have been pushed aside and out the door.

And, in taking up our own cross we are used by the Spirit in building God’s new community of grace and peace, welcome and love. Thanks be to God. MUSICAL OFFERING

LENTEN QUIET DAY AT THE CATHEDRAL. The Washington National Cathedral will offer a 1-day Lenten retreat Saturday, March 14, 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Leading the day is Rev. Carolyn Tanner Irish, an advocate for environmental causes, just immigration reform, and the safety and care of children.
