More than 400 donors and nearly 50 volunteers from Calvert’s community across the country came together to raise $16 million through the Calvert 125 Campaign, exceeding the original goal by 30% and giving the School the opportunity to have an even greater impact in the world - now and for the next 125 years. CHAMPIONING A COMMUNITY OF LEADERS The Institute for Leadership & Purpose, a first-of-its-kind program established in 2018, empowers students in their early years to become purpose-driven global citizens through immersive leadership opportunities and community engagement. This effort, which aims to foster well-rounded thinkers and confident leaders, exposes children to outreach activities and local partnerships at an age when they are naturally developing a wider awareness of themselves, the Baltimore community, and the world. Together, through the Calvert 125 Campaign, we are building on our commitment to educate good citizens. Nearly $1.8 million in campaign gifts supported a number of community-focused activities, many in perpetuity.

SPEAKER SERIES Through the Luke Stone ’86 Speaker Series, generously funded by an endowment gift from the Kahlert Foundation, the Calvert community will be introduced to a broad array of topics, viewpoints, and people, supporting the School’s mission to foster leadership, intellectual development, and strength of character.

LEADERSHIP SUMMITS

BRIDGING BALTIMORE Safe Alternative Foundation For Education (SAFE) and the ILP launched a collaborative leadership program entitled Bridging Baltimore. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, 40 students (20 each from SAFE and Calvert) met biweekly to cultivate friendships, foster a shared vision for our city, and collectively learn and act on social issues affecting our communities.

Each school year, Calvert hosts two leadership summits. This year, these summits will be virtual and will welcome public and private students and educators from schools across the city to gather for discussions and workshops with regional leaders.

LEADERSHIP JOURNEYS Calvert’s outdoor education programming allows students to explore their personal potential and broaden their perspectives. TRANSFORMING OUR CAMPUS When it opens in the fall of 2022, the Luetkemeyer Athletic Center will give Calvert its first-ever dedicated athletic building. Named in honor of Jack Luetkemeyer ’53, whose $2.5 million matching gift made it possible, the complex will house a convertible indoor artificial turf field for all Calvert sports, a student and faculty fitness room, and ten squash courts with an observation gallery. Moreover, it will serve as a space where the entire Calvert community can gather for events and activities, school-wide assemblies, student-led conferences, and afterschool clubs. The Luetkemeyer Athletic Center is the most important large-scale renovation on Calvert’s campus in nearly 20 years. The Luetkemeyer Athletic Center will grow one of Calvert’s most popular offerings, the squash program, which was launched in 2006 by Coach Mary Alice Lears. In recognition of her legacy, a group of families raised more than $150,000 to name a squash court in the new facility in her honor: the Mary Alice Lears Squash Court. 8

EXPANDING ACCESS TO EDUCATION The campaign’s focus on financial aid became even more important during the COVID-19 global pandemic. Calvert has always been dedicated to providing lower and middle school boys and girls with the best education in Baltimore, including students whose families could not otherwise afford the Calvert experience. COVID-19 emphasized our need to secure additional financial aid dollars for our endowment. Approximately one-third of Calvert students receive need-based financial assistance, with awards ranging from 10% to over 90% of tuition. During the 2021-2022 school year, Calvert awarded more than $2.4 million in tuition assistance. The campaign increased our financial aid endowment by more than $1.6 million. This will provide around $64,000 in new financial aid resources every year and boost the endowment designated for financial aid to more than $5 million. 14

Financial aid awards are essential to keeping Calvert accessible to the brightest children in Baltimore, regardless of means. In times of crisis, financial aid helps families who are struggling with job loss or dealing with unexpected changes to their income. Right now, within our community, we have families who have been negatively impacted by COVID-19. The financial aid raised through this campaign ensures the assistance needed to keep our children in the classroom.

ENSURING STUDENT SUCCESS Including the Calvert Fund in the Calvert 125 Campaign was essential in keeping our children in the classroom during the pandemic and ensuring their success. The Calvert Fund is Calvert’s largest source of unrestricted operating dollars and provides flexibility in meeting new challenges as they arise, including COVID-19. Unrestricted gifts raised through annual giving meet operating budget needs the year they are provided. Gifts to the capital campaign included pledges to the Calvert Fund in the 2019-2020 and 20202021 school years, and a few gifts to future annual funds. This approach provided everyone in our community – alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and other friends – the opportunity to participate in a way that profoundly affects campus life.
