welcome
Welcome to our Autumn 2022/ Spring 2023 Season. Every year, for all of us at the Theatre, the highlight of this season is our panto. Dick Whittington and his Cat will be led by our Dame, the irrepressible Matt Crosby as Sarah the Cook and Rolan Bell returns, brandishing his Panto Villain of the Year Award, to give us his fabulous King Rat. We have assembled a phenomenal company to tell the tale of Dick’s heroic journey to the giddy heights of Lord Mayor of London and you can be sure to find our dizzying cocktail of adventure, derring-do, kindness, laugh-out-loud moments, great songs and thrilling dance numbers. Don’t miss out!
Lovers of musicals are in for a treat, as the worldwide phenomenon Six rolls into Cambridge again. Tudor Queens become Pop Princesses as they transform the tale of the six wives of Henry VIII into an uplifting tale of 21st Century girl power. Fisherman’s Friends the Musical celebrates community, friendship and song. Based on the true story of the unlikely chart-topping Cornish singing sensations and their remarkable journey, from singing their traditional working songs to the pyramid stage at Glastonbury, this is a tale of what really matters in life. Cambridge Operatic Society’s feelgood production of Legally Blonde follows Elle’s antics as she shows she is smarter than the Harvard know-it-alls whilst smashing stereotypes and proving her worth to the world.
Coming to us from the West End is the comedy sensation Pride and Prejudice* (*Sort Of). An irreverent and affectionate adaptation of Jane Austen’s book, this promises to be the surprise hit of our season. The world premiere of the classic Ealing Comedy The Lavender Hill Mob will be the perfect start to the new year, brought to life by the comedic talents of Miles Jupp and Justin Edwards. It’s going to be a hoot. Marvel at the razor-sharp craft of Alan Ayckbourn in Relatively Speaking, starring Cambridge favourite Liza Goddard. Ryan Craig’s new play Charlotte and Theodore starring Kris Marshall tackles the culture issues dominating today’s headlines. Last, but not least, Caroline Quentin and her real-life daughter Rose star in George Bernard Shaw’s provocative Mrs Warren’s Profession. What lengths will we go to give our children the chances we want for them and do they fully appreciate it?
A truly great play.
Michael Punter’s Darker Shores, with a fabulous cast, is a classic tale of terror and suspense. Peter James is back, following five smash-hit theatre shows, with his world premiere of the latest instalment of the Grace series, Wish You Were Dead See Detective Superintendent Roy Grace and Cleo Morey find their dream escape together turn into the holiday from hell. Susie Blake makes a welcome return to us as Miss Marple in a brilliant new production of Agatha Christie’s The Mirror Crack’d
Our younger audience members will love The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show, based on the wonderful Eric Carle’s books and many of them will be hiding behind their seats when they come face to face with David Walliams’ new creation The Demon Dentist.
English Touring Opera, in James Conway’s final season as Artistic Director, are bringing us a fabulous trio of operas: Handel’s majestic Giulio Cesare, Donizetti’s thrilling tragedy Lucrezia Borgia and Rossini’s rarely performed Il Viaggio a Reims All will be sung in Italian with English surtitles and played on period instruments. I can’t wait.
To top things off, we have some brilliant one nighters, ranging from the hilarious Crimes on Centre Court, through an evening with the incredible wildlife photographer Gordon Buchanan to double Grammy Award winning Kurt Elling, one of the world’s finest jazz vocalists making his Cambridge debut.
Thank you as ever for your steadfast support and I look forward to seeing you again very soon at Cambridge Arts Theatre.

GREEK PLAY
The triennial Cambridge Greek Play returns to the Arts Theatre.
Following the success of 2019’s Oedipus at Colonus, the same creative team led by director Dan Goldman presents an exciting double bill: the earliest surviving Greek tragedy Persians by Aeschylus and the only remaining satyr play Cyclops by Euripides.
While Persians draws on recent Greek history and Cyclops is derived from the well-known episode in Homer’s Odyssey, both plays present an outsider as the central character. Can those we consider monsters become the object of our pity, if only we look at them closely enough?
The tradition of performing a play in Greek every three years at Cambridge University extends back to 1882, with alumni including Rupert Brooke, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Tom Hiddleston. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to see two rarely staged plays, highly relevant to our times.

Come and see one of the ‘greatest British films of all time’ (BFI) brought to life on stage by Olivier-nominated playwright Phil Porter, directed by Tony and Olivier-nominated Jeremy Sams and starring acclaimed comic actors Miles Jupp (A Very British Scandal, Mock The Week, Why Didn’t They Ask Evans) and Justin Edwards (The Thick of It, 1917, The Ferryman).
This side-splittingly funny, fast-paced comedy tells the story of Henry Holland, an unassuming bank clerk who dreams of stealing the van full of gold bullion he drives across London each day. LIZA GODDARD STEVEN PACEY AND ANTONY EDEN
Beautifully crafted, uproariously funny and charmingly English, Relatively Speaking was Alan Ayckbourn's first West End hit in 1967. It made him a household name, with critics hailing the arrival of a great new comic talent and Noël Coward himself praising the young writer on creating “a beautifully constructed and very funny comedy”. Greg only met Ginny a month ago but has already made up his mind that she's the girl for him. When she tells him that she's going to visit her parents, he decides this is the moment to ask her father for his daughter's hand in marriage. Discovering a scribbled address, he follows her to Buckinghamshire where he finds Philip and Sheila enjoying a peaceful Sunday morning breakfast in the garden. The only thing is, they're not Ginny's parents…
Liza Goddard is one of the UK's favourite actresses. Her extensive range of Ayckbourn credits includes Life of Riley, Communicating Doors and Season's Greetings. Her television work includes cult classics Doctor Who and Bergerac.

& CHARLOTTE
By Ryan Craig
Directed by Terry Johnson
The most divisive issues of our generation are tackled head on in Ryan Craig’s timely new play.
Cancel culture, gender politics, trans rights, online abuse and power struggles are all at play on a University campus which is more like a battleground, where every well-intentioned thought and deed can have unexpected and long-lasting consequences. It is here that we meet two idealistic academics, Lotty and Teddy, as they pick their way through the political and social minefield to embark on a decade long romance.
Teddy is played by television favourite Kris Marshall. Kris has starred in some of the most popular films and television series of the last twenty years, with lead roles in Love Actually, My Family and Death in Paradise His stage roles include Treats opposite Billie Piper, Fat Pig in the West End with Robert Webb and Joanna Page, and the London revival of Glengarry Glen Ross alongside Christian Slater and Robert Glenister.

What is Mrs Warren’s profession?
Mrs Warren’s daughter Vivie has never really known much about her mother. A sensible young woman, she has enjoyed a comfortable upbringing, a Cambridge education, a generous monthly allowance and now has ambitions to go into The Law. Is it conceivable that her privilege and respectability has been financed from the profits of the world’s oldest profession? How will Vivie react when she finds out the startling truth about her mother’s business empire and that freedom comes at an emotional price?
Shaw’s acid test of a mother-daughter relationship is one of his wittiest and most provocative plays. Written in 1894 but banned for thirty years by a Lord Chamberlain who found it “immoral and improper” , Mrs Warren’s Profession is a ripe attack on English hypocrisy and its “fashionable morality”.
Starring the twice winner of the British Comedy Award for Best Comedy Actress Caroline Quentin (Men Behaving Badly), Simon Shepherd (Alex Rider, Peak Practice), Matthew Cottle (Game On) and Caroline’s real-life daughter Rose Quentin.

English Touring Opera returns to Cambridge Arts Theatre with three great operas encompassing love and war, comedy and epic tragedy.
One of Handel’s most celebrated works, Giulio Cesare, is a majestic opera in which the characters are driven to extreme feelings and actions, and in which the music strikes the heart. A story of passion and revenge, featuring a treasure trove of great arias with immense dramatic intensity, the opera follows the events surrounding Julius Caesar’s conquest of Egypt, as well as his uneasy alliance and romance with fabled Egyptian queen, Cleopatra.
In a provincial hotel, guests from all over Europe are stranded on their way to a great coronation. Intrigue, politics, romance and lost luggage all play their part in Rossini’s last Italian opera, Il viaggio a Reims.
Lucrezia Borgia is a tragedy of great pathos. Donizetti created in Lucrezia one of his greatest roles known as one of history’s most famous poisoners, she is a cunning strategist and a loving mother at the same time, a complex woman in a dangerous situation.
Each opera is performed on period instruments in partnership with the much-praised Old Street Band.

GLORIOUSLY FEEL-GOOD MUSICAL’
Based on the true story of the chart-topping Cornish singing sensations and their hit 2019 movie, Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical is a feel-good voyage about friendship, community and music which smashed box office records in Cornwall.
When a group of Cornish fishermen came together to sing the traditional working songs they’d sung for generations, nobody, least of all the fishermen, expected the story to end on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury. They are spotted by a fish-out-of-water music manager on a trip from London, who must learn that there is more to life than selling your sole for fifteen minutes of fame.
A star cast includes James Gaddas, (Coronation Street, Billy Elliot the Musical), Parisa Shahmir (Mamma Mia!), Robert Duncan (Drop the Dead Donkey), Anton Stephans (The X Factor) and Susan Penhaligon (Bouquet of Barbed Wire)
