I HAVE BEEN LIVING IN CAMBRIDGE FOR THE PAST 6 ½ YEARS AND IT IS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL TOWNS I HAVE EVER LIVED IN. The people are kind, carefree and cautious to give opinions. I am attracted to the lack of traffic lights and road rage. It’s easy to cycle around town, doing your shopping at the friendly stores where the assistants still ask how your day was. Cambridge is our town of trees and the home of champions. We embrace our uniqueness and promote the town as a destination not to be missed. “ A town with a unique village feel, offering a boutique shopping experience” And yet Cambridge has much more! Excellent schools, two High Performance Sport Centres and a thriving business community. More and more people finding their way to Cambridge. As they say; “It’s a great place to live …” Migration from the cities and elsewhere to Cambridge is on the rise, which means our town’s sustainability and diversity are challenged. I have asked a few people what Sustainability and Diversity means for them. 1. Mayor Jim Mylchreest, Mayor Waipa “As the world population grows and our understanding of the effect of our activities on the planet become more well-known, we need to make practical and sometimes pragmatic decisions on how to use, reuse and conserve our resources for this generation and for the long term benefit of all species that inhabit the planet. From a business perspective, the more we rely on one or a small number of businesses the more susceptible our economy becomes – we do not have to look far to see what impacts a downturn in the dairy industry will have on our local economy. From a Council perspective the provision of a wide range of services and making Waipa an attractive place to live, work and play is an essential prerequisite to attracting a diverse population, with all of their skills and experiences, necessary to build a strong social and economic community.” 2. Steve Tritt, Economic Development Manager at Waipa District Council “ Diversity is in our economy. In my role, it is having a multiple diverse economy, so that we are not subject to a one single shock in a sector, like kiwifruit/PSA, dairy/falling milk price, etc. Sustainability is about being in business and having jobs for the long term.” 3. Viv Posselt, Editor Cambridge Edition: “ Diversity is looking at more things than just the Town of Champions. And yes, it is true, but we are more and have to be in order to be sustainable. We need to put things into place so growth is managed, making a plan to have the town’s strategy work for the future development without going too far.” 4. Rosalie Lunson, Tutor at Te Wananga o Aotearoa, Chamber of Commerce Life Member “ Sustainability can be such a confusing thing! It is about being careful, being respectful. For some it means recycling and for others it is continuation in a different form. We need to figure out what is sustainability for us, our town and businesses, and what effect it will have on us.” We need to be active in our community and make conscious decisions that will lead to balanced, sustainable growth

CEO’s Message
CAMBRIDGE IS IN AN ENVIABLE POSITION. WE ARE IN A STRONG PHASE OF GROWTH AND CHANGE. New businesses and residents are making Cambridge their home and the ongoing development of the high performance sport sector continues and so too the events associated. Given this expansion and the changes that will evolve as a result of the opening of the Cambridge portion of the Waikato Expressway, we have an incredible opportunity in front of us. We need to be ready to take advantage of these opportunities. This means having the right attitude is critical to embrace diversity and actively strive for sustainable business platforms that will ensure strong business performance.

embrace diversity ~ Aimee Forrest and Loren Bennett, Chamber of Commerce ~
CAMBRIDGE BOUTIQUE OOSH CLOTHING IS JUST ONE OF A NUMBER OF BUSINESSES IN TOWN THAT SUPPORT CAMBRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH LEARNING NEEDS BY PROVIDING THEM WITH WORK EXPERIENCE. For students with a disability, work experience provides an opportunity to develop life and employment skills, personal confidence, and assist with the transition to life after school, while encouraging diversity and awareness of everyone’s value in the workplace. Cambridge High School ORS teacher Alison Porter says “we are so appreciative of the businesses who provide the opportunity to our students. We find that it’s not only the kids that get a lot out of the programme, it is also the businesses, their staff and customers”. Local student Tayla Missen, 20, has made the most of the work experience opportunity, she is working part time at Oosh Clothing on Victoria Street. Tayla sort’s incoming stock, displays items for sale,
makes jewellery and dresses mannequins. She says “I want to be a fashion designer. I love clothing and jewellery. I love the feel of the dress material – smooth, rough, silky – and the bright colourful patterns.” Tayla also loves everything pink. “Pink means love and nurturing” and is, she adds cheekily, “the colour of romance”. It is clear to see Tayla has a big heart and even bigger ambitions. As well as a designer, Tayla would love to be a paramedic, a writer, and a carer of children. Tayla is active in the Cambridge community and is a cadet at St Johns where she requires three more badges to achieve Grand Prior and would eventually like to become a leader. Tayla is currently working towards gaining NCEA credits at school.
Oosh Clothing joined the programme as part of its commitment to empowering women and giving back to the community. Manager Sheryl Brown finds having Tayla at work “fabulous – I don’t know who gets more out of it – her or us! Tayla is such a warm, honest person and will tell customers how great they look – they love it!” “Working with Sheryl is the bright (part) of my day” says Tayla and “I would like to encourage others with a disability to get a job and be more out there in their confidence”. Sheryl would like to encourage other businesses to offer opportunities to students with disabilities and welcomes any potential employers to talk with her one on one. She says “the only limitations are the ones we put on them”.

Being “digital” takes time. It takes effort. It can sometimes be a pain in the proverbial (you’ve got better things to do than sit down and write a blog post, right?). But digital done smart, means you can leverage multiple versions of your original product for only a little bit more effort. Heres how: Blog Article For the purpose of this exercise, let’s say you started with a blog article about one of the frequently asked questions your customers ask all the time. You’ve gone into awesome detail (your readers will love you for this) and it’s sitting somewhere between 1,000 – 2,000 words. Podcast Your blog article gives you the starting point for a podcast script. Avoid reading it word-for-word (unless you can read without sounding like you’re reading!). Use this original article to create an audio version of the same information. Create an MP3 file to upload to your website for visitors to download and listen to while they’re on-the-go. Not sure how to create an audio file? Most smartphones have the ability to record MP3 files. What’s important is the quality of the microphone and where you record (quiet!). Don’t worry about uploading to iTunes or anything complicated like that. As the advert says: just do it.
Infographic Depending on your design skills (and budget) you can reformat the main points of your article into an infographic. An infographic is a pictorial interpretation of information. Remember to include your logo on your infographic so that when it gets shared people know who owns the copyright. Ebook When you’ve got enough blog articles written you can create an ebook. Each blog article can be a separate chapter in your book. Why repeat yourself across different formats? Creating diversified versions of the same information gives your audience choices of what suits them. Audio is eaten on the go: while driving, working-out, doing something else. Audio is hands- and attention-free. Your customers can multi-task while learning about your business. Blog articles are for the visual person who loves reading. Plus you can easily include images and clickable links to other places on your website. Videos are for those who like to connect with others (listening to your voice, watching moving visuals). And infographics permit a quick scan to get the main points. Infographics (like video) can be embedded on other websites which means your brand is getting shared. Which is a good thing. Share + Rinse & Repeat All of these diversified versions of digital content can be shared across all of the social places your customers hang out. Being diversified means you only need to come up with one subject at a time to be able to create multiple pieces of digital content for your website. Which means Google and the other search engines will love you to the moon and back. But more importantly, you’re educating your customers about what you do.
Video Similarly, use the original article as “prompts” in a video. There’re two format styles for a DIY video: • Talking head: you talk to the video camera (make sure your background is professional and the audio quality is exceptional). • Power Point: create Power Point slides from the main bullet points of your original article and voice over these slides. After you’ve created your video upload it to YouTube then embed onto your website. If you’ve used video editing software and you’re confident with the audio quality of your video split the audio component from the visual component and bingo! you’ve got yourself a podcast without going to the extra effort of creating a podcast and a video. For examples of diversified content in action visit www.getgooglin.com. Get Googlin shows business owners who want to DIY their own digital how to harness the power of Google, LinkedIn and the Internet to get more word-of-mouth in the world-of-mouse. Get Googlin is owned by HaloBiz. Julie South, Halobiz E. info@halobiz.co.nz www.halobiz.co.nz

EDGING TOWARDS ~ By LesleyAnn, People in Mind ~ THIS YEAR, OUR TEAM HAS JOINED THE MAYORAL MENTORING PROGRAMME FOR STUDENTS AT CAMBRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL. From day one we learned something from our student. She told us about a job website we weren’t even aware of. She and her school friends had come across it because they are all at the stage where they are looking for part-time work, and this website was perfectly targeted at them. Working with a teenager has also refreshed our skills in understanding how our up and coming workforce approach their work day and behave. I must say they are an inquisitive lot. For me workplace diversity isn’t just about ethnicity, gender or age – it’s also about diversity across skill-sets, mind-sets and working styles. It’s not rocket science that different people bring different things to a business - ideas, approaches, connections and knowledge. So, how can we achieve diversity in our business? There are some obvious examples where workplace diversity drives directly down from a business strategy. For example, imagine your strategy is to expand into an international market. It makes sense to bring people into your team of that ethnicity because of their
8 / chamber news / OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2015
connection to that market, and their ability to speak the language and understand the culture. Or your strategy may be to use social media as a marketing tool. If your team is a pack of technophobes, you will need to develop the capability by training in-house or diversify and hire someone who brings this capability with them. The challenge for small businesses, especially really small businesses with less than 5 employees, is the practicality of being diverse. It can sometimes be challenging – say if you are in a niche market, with a narrow product range, and the market is small geographically. But before you beat yourself up about how “un-diverse” you are, look beyond the obvious. Perhaps it’s your workplace arrangements that are diverse – you might have a mixture of full-timers, part-timers, remote staff, mobile staff and contractors. Or perhaps, like me, you are thinking of hiring a student for a couple of hours a week. These all bring diversity that helps you meet the needs of your business. As business owners, we want our businesses to last the test of time, to be
able to adapt or grow to meet changes in the market, and to survive no matter what challenges are thrown at us by inside or outside forces. Like all business decisions, the key thing is to know where you are going. Are you gearing up for the next phase of your business, are you being driven by technology changes, or are you feeling the effects of the growth in the aging population? Diversity could help in all these cases. As a parting note, if you are diving into diversity don’t forget the basic principles of recruitment – ensuring that you have the best person for the job and ensuring the person is a good fit for your team. Good luck with your future recruiting, and if you have any questions about recruiting drop me a line anytime.

THE WAIPA NETWORKS BUSINESS AWARDS CULMINATED IN A CELEBRATION OF EXCELLENCE IN BUSINESS AT MYSTERY CREEK ON FRIDAY 31 JULY 2015. MC Te Radar entertained us with his unique, down to earth humour and kept the evening on track. Jono McCullough of Rob May Builders Ltd, winner of the Large Business Category and overall Supreme Award, spoke of how the entry into the Waipa Business Awards had provided an opportunity for their business to reflect, review and renew. He said the opportunity to be critiqued by business experts has been invaluable. Jono involved his entire management team in the entry process, including his financial advisors and business mentors. He actively encouraged, if not challenged, other businesses to enter the Awards next
year as the experience has contributed so positively to Rob May Builders Ltd. Following the win at the Awards, Jono could not believe the recognition received from media coverage. “It has been absolutely incredible he said. The judging panel commented on the quality of the entries and the visiting judges were very impressed with the innovation and consistent high quality of business planning demonstrated by all entrants. The Waipa Business Networks Awards, encourage the pursuit of excellence in business in Waipa and Raglan. Thank you to the family of sponsors associated with the Waipa Networks Business Awards for their participation and commitment to business excellence.

Our tag line is “It’s your life. Own it.” We believe people exercise their right to live the life they choose. Working out and consuming with a view to enrich their lives in their chosen way. We select our job, our car and our home and if we don’t like it we can change. Yet life has a habit of letting bad things happen to good people. Where some, if not all, of these choices are taken from us. The result, a financial impact on our lives and that of our business and/or family. We are passionate about a few things – people, health, wellbeing and life. Despite how we are guided by constant advertising and the media, this is a good time to realise, ultimately, we still make the choice of lifestyle we want and all that makes it what it is for our families and businesses. At SMART Advice we believe the unexpected should not dictate your future. Working with SMART Advice, you get to own this part of life too, even if it means getting a bit of help from us. SMART Advice is the only provider of S.M.A.R.T. Risk Certification (a sample can be found on our website). We specialise in personalised business and personal risk advice. Our sole objective is ensuring our clients know that their family and business interests are protected - we just happened to use insurance products to achieve this.

Kym Joll, Caci Cambridge ym Joll is the new owner of Cambridge’s Caci Clinic, having recently moved here from Gisborne with her husband and two children. She has been interested in beauty therapy for as long as she can remember, making up her own masks and treatments as a young girl. She loves the career and said it didn’t feel like a real job to her but more of a passion. “It’s just about making people feel good about themselves, giving women a bit of confidence and meeting lots of people in a nice environment.”
She trained in Auckland as soon as she left high school and has worked throughout New Zealand and London, including a stint with Virgin where she met Richard Branson on several occasions. Kym bought the business in June and is delighted with the lovely team here at Caci and feels they have helped her to settle in really well. She said her roots would be firmly planted in Cambridge for a while, as her family is originally from here and her parents would be retiring in this area. “I love Cambridge, it’s been a really easy move,” she said.
