Sounds and their patterns in Indic languages presents the phonological properties of Indic languages at the word level including inventories and distribution of phonemes, allophones, syllable structures and tones. The general properties of the sound patterns of 148 languages from a total of eight groups as well as their phonological sketches are presented in these books. The description of the languages is complemented with an exhaustive bibliography that lends the two volumes the character of a handbook on the phonology of Indic languages. Volume II: Phonological Sketches presents the phonological sketches of 148 languages organized into seven main groups, namely, Austro-Asiatic, Dravidian, Indo-Aryan, Tibeto-Burman, Tai-Kadai, Andaman group, Contact Languages and an eighth group of Historical Varieties. The sketches are based on a critical evaluation of published works on the languages, with a few original contributions.
