From Budding Journalists to Bylined Reporters Imagine venturing into the streets of Madrid or Salamanca, Spain, with your reporter’s notebook in hand, learning on the fly how to function as part of an international press corps. That’s exactly how a group of 16 journalism students spent five weeks during the summer of 2014 as participants in one of Northeastern’s Dialogue of Civilizations programs. The students identified and researched their own stories, landed crucial interviews with government officials and citizens, and learned to report objectively on complex topics. Working collaboratively, they produced an online magazine and two packages for The Boston Globe, one on Spain’s controversial bullfighting tradition and the other on the United European Football Association championship between Real Madrid and Atlético. Dialogue of Civilizations projects have taken students to Cuba, Ireland, Italy, the Middle East, and beyond.

RESEARCH + CREATIVE ACTIVITY

LOOKING CLOSER

The Science of Self-Reliance Major metropolitan areas, which generally import most of their food and fuel, may need to get creative when it comes to managing the realities of population growth and a shifting climate. Charles Creagh, a graduate student in the Master of Design for Sustainable Urban Environments (MDES) program, recently joined a team of Northeastern researchers to map the possibilities for producing food and fuel in urban coastal areas. Analyzing GIS data and conducting field investigations in Boston, Creagh identified suitable biomass production sites and created renderings of what those sites might look like to neighboring residents. He then developed a survey to assess public reception to the projects. “We’re studying how self-sufficient coastal cities can become,” says Creagh. “This work provides a template for the strategic promotion of sustainable biomass production in cities worldwide.”

ARTS ON CAMPUS

A vibrant community

12 Northeastern University

From our 50 annual Studio Theatre performances, to creative interdisciplinary programming by Northeastern Center for the Arts, CAMD infuses innovation and artistic expression into every corner of campus. Across Northeastern, Gallery 360 exhibits work by students, faculty, alumni, and other notable artists, while the campuswide Public Art Initiative transforms the entire university into a vibrant canvas.

BROAD POSSIBILITIES

HUB OF CREATIVITY

CAMD students explore their academic ambitions as part of a closely knit college community while enjoying access to the world of possibilities offered by a major research university—including hightech research labs, competitive athletics, Greek life, and more than 340 student organizations.

Boston is home to more arts and cultural organizations per capita than any other city in the nation—and Northeastern is in the center of it all. World-class institutions just steps from campus include the Museum of Fine Arts, Symphony Hall, the New England Conservatory, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.

With a Little Help From Friends Anjimile Chithambo, AMD’16, came to Northeastern as an English major and found the inspiration and connections to become a recording artist. Motivated by a class that helped songwriters develop structure and intention behind their music, Anji began writing songs in earnest and soon connected with like-minded peers. The band Anjimile has already put out three EPs and recently released its first full-length album, which was partially recorded in two of Northeastern’s media studios. “We found a lot of support from friends and mentors within the Northeastern community,” says Lee Schuna, AMD’16, who in 2013 co-founded Human Nature Records, the independent label that released the album. “The creative spirit of CAMD has really driven our ambition to make something meaningful during our time here.”
