Journalism

The School of Journalism offers a Master of Arts (MA) degree, in which students can choose one of two tracks that prepare them for the challenges faced by legacy and new media in the digital age. Students new to the field or those with experience can choose programs tailored to help them thrive. Our programs are designed to merge traditional journalism with the latest technology.

Media Innovation PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Media Innovation trains journalists in skills like videography, data journalism, data visualization, web development, game design, and entrepreneurship. The goal of the program is to meet the demand for master storytellers who are also digitally fluent. CURRICULUM

Our three-semester, 33-semester hour program consists of four core components: the story, the studio, the concentration, and our partners. The Story At the core of the program is an in-depth project of significance reported and produced over the course of the three-semester degree. Projects can range from interactive documentaries to data-driven investigations. The Studio This three-semester sequence is a functioning newsroom in which we discuss progress on each student’s story. It also allows students to share lessons from their other classes with instructors and peers, creating an atmosphere of “cross-pollination” between curricular experiences while providing a platform for additional instruction in some of the most important issues in journalism. The Concentration We let students identify the best media through which to tell their story. The goal is to offer a range of concentrations, including videography, data journalism and data visualization, game design, web development, and entrepreneurship. We expect some students will mix and match among these options. Our Partners Everything Media Innovation students do is for real-world publication. As students progress through the program, we begin reaching out to our publishing partners, both national and local, to find an ideal outlet for the project. We then bring these professionals in to talk to students. They’re more than guest lecturers—they’re guest editors, performing real-world tweaks and changes to stories that will ultimately be published on their respective outlets.
