trail network

COUNTY COMPLETES FEASIBILITY PLAN FOR TRAIL NETWORK “SPINE” With the adoption of the Camden County Bicycling and Multi-Use Trail Plan as an element of the Camden County Comprehensive Plan, the logical next question was, “Where to begin?”. At the urging of Freeholder Jeff Nash, liaison to the Division of Open Space and Farmland Preservation, the County identified a potential “spine” for the trail network running from the Delaware River in Camden to the Atlantic County border in Winslow Township. Then, with the assistance of a consultant, the County examined the selected route more closely and held a series of public events and stakeholder meetings to receive comments on the proposed alignment of this spine. The goal was to come up with a route that could accommodate a 10’-12’ wide off-road trail and would be safe for users “from 8 to 80.” The result is a feasibility study for a proposed trail (Cross Camden County Trail) spanning more than 32 miles and traveling through 17 different municipalities along the way. It encompasses many different environments from the urban

to the suburban and rural. “This trail will link the Camden waterfront to many of our suburban downtown areas such as Audubon, Haddon Heights and Laurel Springs and to some of the County’s larger open space properties in Winslow Township,” said Freehold Nash. The study also looked at the trail’s potential impact on the local economy and resident’s health. It found that the trail, once built out, would add more than $19,500,000 per year to the County’s economy while saving $6,800,000 in annual health care costs for trail users. “Recreational benefits aside, this trail project is an economic engine that will energize many of our business districts throughout the County,” said Nash. Following the completion of the study in June of 2017, the Cross Camden County Trail was officially designated a part of the larger bi-state regional trail network known as The Circuit, which spans nine counties in New Jersey and Pennsylvania The Cross Camden County Trail Feasibility Study and the accompanying Appendix are available at CamdenCounty.com/ service/parks/cross-county-trail

DESIGN OF CONNECTOR TRAIL TO BEGIN Work on a connector trail to link the existing trails at Gateway Park and Cooper River Park is expected to begin this summer. Using a grant from the DVRPC, the County will complete the design of a small but significant trail segment in Pennsauken that will take users from Gateway Park, around The Pub restaurant and to the recently completed trail that runs from Kaighn Avenue to RT. 130 just across the street from Cooper River Park. Concurrently, using a Transportation Alternatives Grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation, the County will be rehabilitating an approximate one half mile section of multi-use trail in Cherry Hill that runs from Grove Street to the New Jersey Transit train bridge crossing the Cooper River. A designated crossing at Grove Street to meet the existing trail in Maria Barnaby Greenwald Park will also be part of this project. With the completion of these two projects, trail users will enjoy an off-road trail that travels from the Speedway Gas Station on Admiral Wilson Boulevard in Camden to Challenge Grove in Cherry Hill, a distance of more than four miles.

YOUR RECYCLING CONTAINER’S DIRTY DOZEN

The following are your curbside recycling container’s DIRTY DOZEN. Please follow these simple rules when deciding which items to place in your container. 1. NO Plastic Bags Plastic Bags are the WORST contaminant in a recycling container. When placed in a curbside container, they get wet and dirty and cannot be recycled. They may be recycled at any of several local grocery stores that provide recycling bins for plastic bags. 2. NO Materials in Plastic Bags Workers have to slow the conveyor belts to rip open bags that contain recyclables and then add the bag to the heap of bags headed for a landfill. No items should be placed in plastic bags. 3. NO Shredded Paper Shredded paper is too small to sort. The pieces fall through the cracks of the sorting machines, stick to the belts and end up all over the floor. Please avoid shredding when possible because it destroys the potential for recycling. Compost shredded materials in your backyard compost bin (if available) or simply place in your regular trash.

02

2018 Camden County Recycler

4. NO Scrap Metal

9. NO Caps/Lids on Bottles or Jars

Scrap metal items of any size should not go into your curbside container. These items cause excessive damage to recycling equipment. Call your municipal public works office to find out how and when to recycle scrap metal in your municipality.

Metal lids can be removed and recycled loose in the bin. Plastic lids and caps from glass bottles and jars should be placed in your regular trash.

5. NO Hazardous Waste Hazardous wastes such as paint, automotive fluids, car batteries and pesticides must be taken to one of our six annual household hazardous waste collection events, not placed in your curbside recycling container. 6. NO Diapers or Bio-Hazardous Waste Syringes and needles, diapers and other sanitary products are not recyclable. Please place these items in your regular trash. 7. NO Non-recyclable Plastics While we have added new plastic items, many plastics are still not recyclable. Plastic lids, foam and any other plastics not listed in our recycling guidelines are not recyclable because stable recycling markets do not exist for these materials. Please place these items in your regular trash. 8. NO Flattened Containers The single-stream sorting equipment separates “flats” (paper) from “rounds” (containers). When containers are flattened, the equipment mistakenly sends them to the paper side of the facility, significantly contaminating the paper we’re sending to the recycling market.

10. NO Liquids When we compact bottles for shipping, liquids drip, splatter and explode all over the floor, creating a sticky, smelly mess on the sorting floor. Please completely empty and rinse out all containers before recycling. 11. NO Ceramics or Non-recyclable Glass Ceramic, china, dishes, mirrors, light bulbs, porcelain and window glass should not go into your curbside recycling container. Their different melting points and chemical compositions will ruin new glass bottles. Please place these items in your regular trash. 12. NO Frozen Food Containers Paperboard boxes that were designed for freezer foods, such as frozen pizza and entrées, have a plastic polymer sprayed on them to protect against freezer burn. That same coating prevents the box from breaking up in the recycling process. These materials are neither recyclable or compostable. Please place these items in your regular trash.

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO CREATE A MORE SUSTAINABLE RECYCLING PROGRAM; PLEASE EMPTY, CLEAN, AND DRY What we can recycle here in Camden County is often dependent on foreign markets that purchase much of what is put out at the curb, not only in our county but throughout the Country. With this in mind, recent developments in China are affecting US recyclers that have historically marketed a large portion of their materials in China. One of the effects of the “China Sword”, a recent initiative of the Chinese government, is a tightening of the specifications for recycled paper entering that country. In March of this year the allowable percentage of contaminants or nonrecyclable materials in a bale of paper went from 3% to 0.5%, a level beyond most U.S. recycling facilities’ capability to meet. This has resulted in whole loads of recycled paper being rejected, with few alternative markets available. As a result, some of this previously recyclable paper is now being stockpiled, awaiting markets to appear. Unfortunately, paper that is stored outdoors for long periods of time begins to degrade and so lose value, making it even harder to sell. In order to create a more marketable product coming out of our recycling facility, Camden County is asking residents to help by instituting some changes in what and how they prepare their items for recycling at the curb.

Also, do not place plastic bags in your curbside recycling container. They are considered a contaminant and a nuisance to the recycling process and will be disposed of as trash. Clean plastic bags can be recycled separately at any number of grocery stores and other outlets around the County. For more ways to help improve your recycling habits, please see Your Recycling Container’s Dirty Dozen on page 02 By following these simple steps, we can produce a sustainable recycling program, and reduce items to be landfilled.

BACK CHANNEL PADDLE & PEDAL By David O’Reilly It’s surely a sign of health when ospreys and eagles, shad and striped bass return to a once polluted waterway. That’s just what 15 kayakers found recently as they paddled, then pedaled, along Camden’s little-known “back channel” of the Delaware River. Here, with the Philadelphia skyline as backdrop, the slender, 18-mile Cooper River meets the Delaware behind Petty’s Island on the city’s north end. As “watershed moments” go, the four-hour paddle-and-pedal tour of Camden’s transforming waterfront was modest in scope -- just a glimpse of what’s coming. But a decade hence, when picnicking and paddling are as familiar here as a game of hoops, the blue-sky, breeze-kissed 28th day of April, 2018, will deserve to be remembered as a first of its kind. These paddlers were the first ever to tour the nascent 35-acre Cramer Hill Nature Preserve now in development.

Our kayaks sat at the start of the morning in a grassy field. To the east lay the traditional offerings of an urban park: a playground, basketball courts and a softball field. To the west beckoned the lagoon-like Back Channel, 400 yards wide and nearly two miles long. “This is a big jump for Camden,” marveled 26-year-old Soley Berrios, a member of the city planning board. She had learned of this trip just days earlier, on a community website. “A lot of people don’t think we have nice things” in Camden, she said, “but we do.” This would be her first time in a kayak, as it was for several others. This day’s adventure was planned by Discover the Delaware, an alliance of advocates for local recreational waterways. Its members include Camden County Board of Freeholders, the New Jersey Conservation Foundation, the Camdenbased Center for Aquatic Sciences at Adventure Aquarium, UrbanPromise, Cooper’s Ferry Partnership, Upstream Alliance, and Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia. Discover the Delaware seeks to expand public access to healthy waterways and promote on-the-water recreation and educational programming. Interested in exploring the Back Channel yourself? Join us on these additional trips: Paddle and Pedal: The Back Channel June 30 & July 14 11 AM - 4 PM For more information and to register: discoverthedelaware.org

Most importantly, all containers placed in your curbside recycling should be empty of all contents, rinsed and drained of all water. Remnants of foods and liquid in bales of paper and cardboard are considered contaminants and will affect the marketability of that material. Next, we ask all residents to refrain from “aspirational recycling”. That is, do not place items not identified by your municipality as recyclable, in your curbside containers. This includes items such as plastic laundry baskets, plastic children’s toys, garden hoses, mirrors, plate glass, light bulbs, batteries etc. Note that these items are not being recycled and are leaving the recycling facility as trash or causing contamination of otherwise marketable materials. Please place these items in your regular trash, NOT in your recycling container.
