FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY is one form of photography that is very hard to define. Fine art photographers have tremendous creative freedom. They can pursue their personal vision and create images that are beautiful to them. It is all about beautiful depiction of everything and yet beauty depends on individual preferences and many choose to do it in black and white. This time we have partnered with (en)Visionographers: Julia Anna Gospodarou and Joel Tjintjelaar who created a contest for Fine Art in Black and White photography. The images submitted ranged from architectural collections to portraits and landscape, each image successfully tells a poignant story.

WHAT IS (en)Visionography
WHAT IS AN (en)Visionographer
(en)Visionography is a new name for photography, or more precisely for fine art photography, a name that reflects the things that changed in photography in the new digital era and that made it different from traditional photography.
The photographer creating in this manner, creating (en)Visionography and not only photography, becomes an (en)Visionographer and he is less and less dependent on the limitations of his camera or on the reality he sees to create his images, his art. Eventually he only depends in creating his (en)Visionography on the representation he gives to the scene in front of him and is only guided by his imagination and creative skills.
(en)Visionography is in essence The New Fine Art Photography. The concept of (en)Visionography is fully defined and analyzed in the book From Basics to Fine Art by Julia Anna Gospodarou and Joel Tjintjelaar. There are three principal things that define (en)Visionography and they are: 1. Vision comes before reality in creating a photograph. Reality is only the starting point and the canvas that the artist will use to create his vision on. 2. The vision of the artist can be created by using the camera and processing tools and no tool or technique is forbidden, as far as it helps the final image express the vision of the artist. 3. (en)Visionography is not only about B&W photography, but B&W photography, by removing the color and working only with tones of gray, distances itself from reality and comes closer to interpreting that reality through art.
HOW TO CREATE (en)Visionography This process usually starts with a thought, an idea, an impression or a feeling and this triggers every step the artist makes till transforming the initial impulse into an image that (re)presents it. The thought leads to finding an image that is suited to his vision and to capturing it in the camera, but from then to the final result the image still has to go through different phases of transformation to finally match the artist’s inner world, to become a visual representation of it, and this is a transformation that is accomplished by using processing tools in molding the image into an object representing the vision, into (en)Visionography. This process is more a need than a conscious decision and leads to creating an object of art.

Making art releases emotional and intellectual tensions and gives an answer to the existentialist quests or its creator. It is what the artist searches for in essence, finding answers for his questions about the world and creating a world of himself.
THE GROUP (en)Visionography – THE NEW FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY The aim of creating the group (en)Visionography – The New Fine Art Photography was to give a space to the artists creating based on the concept of (en)Visionography, the artists creating a different type of photography, the photography that is based on Vision and whose end goal is to recreate in images the soul and the personal, unique world of the artist. This publication shows the photography works of this group and it is meant to be its first exhibition. In its first phase it is a virtual exhibition, also one that will be immortalized through a printed version of this publication. We aim in the near future for this exhibition to become a real one, to be recreated in a physical space and for these works to reach the audience also as printed photographs hanging on the walls of an exhibition space. A warm thank you to all the artists for participating! Julia Anna Gospodarou & Joel Tjintjelaar (en)Visionographers

FLUID TIME IV – STOPPING TIME JULIA ANNA GOSPODAROU

This is the fourth image in my series Fluid Time, series that is a story about the architecture of Chicago, where I aim to present the way it impacted me, the way it made me feel. I'm using as tool to present my impressions the characteristics of the blur that the tilt-shift lens can create in an image when fully tilted, also the the technique of daylight long exposure. The idea I had in mind when working on this series was to look at architecture and see it as a parallel reality, as a dream and a gate towards our subconscious world, towards our hidden desires and aspirations. What I want to convey with my study, through this image and the entire story I present in the series, is that time, space, reality itself, are only conventions. Living inside them can be just as easy as living outside them and the reality of living outside them can be just as real as the one of relating to them. Dreaming can be reality just as imagination can be reality as well.
(en)Visionography : FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY
9
For me, this is a way of looking at photography in a different way, seeing it as (en) Visionography, a name I give to my entire work, rather than as traditional photography. Does world need to have a clear material shape to be real? I do not think so and this image and the series is an attempt at showing this concept by melting together reality and dream by means of an image. The practical tool that I used to express this idea is the the tilt-shift blur, a technique one would not expect to find in an architectural photograph, which is traditionally about detail and sharpness. By creating this contradiction, I aim to put the viewer in the position to ask himself questions and to find new ways of looking at architectural photography, new ways of interpreting an image. I offer him a different fine art language, my language. Using a tool that is unusual for a certain purpose is my way of sending the viewer to a different world, a world where other rules reign, as is the world of dreams.

VISUAL ACOUSTICS XI - SILENCE AND LIGHT JOEL

When I took this photograph, I already knew how this photo was going to look like, for about 75%. As always I wanted to elaborate on the concept, as visualised in the series Visual Acoustics - Silence and Light, that shadows, in the words of legendary architect Louis Kahn, create silence and evoke awe and mystery. Shadows therefore always play an important part in my architectural photographs since it’s a way of not only creating silence and evoke mystery and awe but at the same time will remove the visual noise that is very typical for an urban setting. Architectural photographs and minimalism seemingly don’t go together but they can go together if you ‘remove the visual noise in an urban setting’ by adding and emphasising the shadows in targeted parts in an architectural image. What was new in this image of the Pantheon in Rome was that I added the human element to it in the form of motion blur of a crowd. I knew beforehand that motion blur of crowds would be an additional feature in this photograph of a very popular and
(en)Visionography : FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY
11
crowded touristic hot spot in Rome, but of course you never know how it will actually turn out. A very nice surprise to me was how the clouds turned out: even though I used an exposure time of more than 6 minutes, which in most cases would be enough to create very subtle, ethereal looking, long streaks of clouds and a lot of motion in the sky, that however didn’t happen, since the clouds were very static that day and there was almost no movement. But what happened, and what I didn’t anticipate, was that the clouds mimicked the ghost like appearance of the motion blur from the crowds. The motion blur from the crowd represent the presence of human beings, regardless of time, in a timeless way: not very defined or detailed, but as blurry as any random impression in time. The ghostlike clouds could represent the gate keepers of this building that has withstood time for many centuries. But I prefer to leave that interpretation and all the rest up to the imagination of the viewer. I merely intended to evoke a feeling of mystery, timelessness, awe and beauty with this image.

“Outside of Ansel Adams’ Basic Photo Series, From Basic to Fine Art, by Joel Tjintjelaar and Julia Anna Gospodarou, is the best book on B&W photography written in the last 40 years.” (…) “The importance of the book is reached in Julia’s and Joel’s abilities to blend the practice of classical form and content in vision and technique, so that Form is Content. While others claim to have achieved this state of aesthetic grace, this is the first time I have seen it accomplished with great skill and with a brilliant explanation of how to get there.” (…) “I consider Julia’s (en)Visionography and Photography Drawing the most important innovation in B&W photography since the invention of the Zone System.” (…) - George DeWolfe (Luminous Landscape) “In today’s humankind ever-increasing urge for homogenization and uniformity, Joel and Julia stand out. Joel is the modern equivalent of what Ansel Adams did for black & white photography in the film era, always exploring new horizons, new techniques, and new frontiers to explore. Julia Anna, on the other hand, is the chimera of Imogen Cunningham and Vivian Maier, merging one of the sharpest eyes in the art world with the artistic flair to make every image canvas come alive.” (…) “Their book and stunning images testify to their intellectual curiosity and desire to understand where they are coming from, who they became and where they are going, together with taking black & white art to ever higher dizzying heights.” (…) - Dr. Charles Paul Azzopardi “For anyone who is both passionate and willing to understand what Fine Art Black and White Photography is all about, this book in an absolute must buy in my opinion. The way in which both Joel and Julia explain everything is easy to follow and with great detail. Not only do they explain their personal vision but also share some of their secrets in what it takes to produce some of the best Fine Art Architecture images around today. I have been making Black and White photographs for a few years and I have learnt so much from these two photographers especially as they explain how to approach architecture, understanding the light and reaching out for a better composition. If architecture is not your thing but long exposure photography in general is, Joel and Julia explain everything there is to know about the subject including some of the pitfalls to watch out for. All in all, this is the one book which i will reach for time and time again for both interesting reading and also as a great reference source.” - Ian Barber

Yokohama city is located just 30km separated from center of metropolis Tokyo, which may be one of the big commercial cities in Japan and have international and modern cityscape. Particularly at Minatomirai district in Yokohama city, a lot of high-rise as well as structurally beautiful buildings functioned as commercial facilities are located; many citizens irrespective of age or sex love to come for leisure and also as a part of their life. Especially, Yokohama Landmark Tower, constructed in 1990, is a super high-rise building and constitutes the core of the district. The height is 296.33m and is much higher than any other architecture near it. From the aspect of photography-related explanation, it’s absolutely very popular photogenic motif for general photographers; there have been a lot of related photographs already published.

Therefore, for such the popular and structurally outstanding architecture, I strongly would like to challenge to take fine art image from characteristic and original composition that may not have been taken and seen ever before such as a composition of hybrid distance view consisting of double objects of close and long-distance view images. When I walked around the district, very fortunately I have found out a suitable location naturally which is a nameless corner at Sakuragi-Cho station. I might express an interesting minimums by selected field angle unifying efficient disappearance of neighboring structures utilizing the property of super high-rise building and suitable adjacent eave and piers.

VISION: My vision behind the image was the eye that forms the reflections of water, as the lines leads us to it or it comes to us through the lines, and how it sees the world, it is there to observe, but few see it. The eye has a sublime view of the empire of consumerism, where time stops to watch. Inconstant light, after the rain with low and fast clouds has made this photo.

VISION: I originally came to Westfriedhof underground station in Munich due to the wonderful visual style of the station, however the scene I found made me think of something other than an architectural image. This scene, and the quiet atmosphere that I felt here, brought to my mind how we all have to deal with the things that are outside of our control, despite all of our efforts with the things that we feel we can control. We strive to work, to learn, to apply ourselves, to improve, to love and to be good, but behind all of this is the patient waiting that is needed in order for our dreams to be realised.

This Image was a bit tricky to shoot because I was not allowed to shoot with a tripod, I had only about a minute to take it and there was a rehersal on the stage, so the hall was not illuminated at all, with other words it was really dark in there. To get a satisfiying result that also defines the pure size of the room, I made 4 (x3) vertical shots at iso 1600 and stitched them afterwards.
They all have really elegant, quiet and peaceful atmosphere and are filled with daylight or awesome lightdesign. My vision was it, to shoot these spaces, because of their incredible architectural beauty and to capture them with all of their strong “symmetrical perfection” Calatrava and his team created them.
I absolutely admire the interior work of Santiago Calatrava on the City of Arts and Science in Valencia. All rooms/spaces inside are in my oppinion an unique and amazing work of interior design.

The difficulty of photographing an iconic is that there are millions of photographs taken already, the challenge lies in trying to find a different point of view as well as process it in such a way that is new. This was both the challenge and my vision for this image of the Millenium bridge in London. I was lucky that on the day the clouds moved in the same direction as the bridge, this allowed me to give the image direction both via the cloud movement as well as light. I feel that both by capturing and processing this image in this manner gave some soul to an inanimate object.

I am a passionate B&W photographer first and foremost, seeing the world in shades of grey. Colour does not speak to me, the colour spectrum is like a sold out football stadium full of distracting noise with each person shouting for attention. I feel at home in monochrome, where I can bring harmony to the images I see in my mind’s eye. It is called “Space Invaders” because the new building to the left (BMW-Museum) looks like an alien spacecraft threatening to attack the so-called “Vierzylinder” to the right. This image intends to show that architecture and music share a common cultural lineage. The image consists in abstract art forms based on rhythm, proportion and harmony. The same characteristics that please the eye also please the ear. Musical terms such as rhythm, texture, harmony, proportion, dynamics, and articulation refer both to architecture and to music. In architecture and music rhythm is referred to the regular or coordinated repetition of lines, figures, or forms which are considered as a measure for organizing forms and spaces in architecture.
The combination of forms was meant to recreate a whole where all the parts interact harmoniously with each other, just like in a musical composition. Architectural shapes are revealed and formed by light. The harmony in the images is represented by the use of light. I try to design space and to convey balance in the relationship of buildings in terms of shapes, patterns and textures. The viewer is invited to explore the shapes and repetition of lines in the same way like listening to a musical composition/ masterpiece.
The comparison between architecture & music will reveal that, the architectural design process has the same components & elements as in music, which are consisting of: A-Designer; B-User; C- Architectural work.

The CMA-CGM tower is the tallest tower in the city of Marseille (147m). Designed by architect Zaha Hadid, it is in the business district Euroméditerranée where other facilities. The construction of the tower CMA-CGM is one of the results of Euroméditerranée program which is to restructure completely several neighborhoods adjacent to the port of Marseille. It is the first major work on the site of Euroméditerranée.
The unique design strategy of the new CMA CGM Headquarters divides the overall volume into smaller fragments and reassembles them in a way that maintains the integral uniformity of the tower.
The tower’s disparate volumes (generated from gradual centripetal vectors) gently converge towards each other and then bend apart to create an elegant “metallic curving arc that slowly lifts and accelerates skywards into a dramatic vertical geometry.

Amazing combination of engineering and design, a truly architectural and technical achievement, the Terenez bridge, 515 m long, is a cable-stayed bridge, with a fan cable arrangement and a curved deck. 2 pylons, each supporting 72 shrouds who will wear a curved deck of 12000 tons. My photographic choice was focused on the height of one pylon (100 meters height), and more precisely on the metal anchor box (115 tons) that supports 72 shrouds. To check the tension of each shroud, a test consisted in making them vibrating like the strings of a harp... then, by measuring the vibration produced, we deduce the tension (83 tons to 280 tons). My vision is one of a giant 144 strings harp. The burst of strings emphasizes this feeling.

After shooting the external of building I came across this secluded part of the building which houses the spiral stair case with the shell around it looking like a kidney bean. I knew straight away this was a cool angle and would be something unusual to shoot (which is what I like to look for).
(en)Visionography : FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY
51
As always I shoot with the black and white setting in camera and with the fast cloud movement it got a 30 second exposure with the Firecrest filter and knew there and then its my kind of shot. After trying a few different angles lying on the ground I saw this, the door with a little light shining in down the walls leading my eye up over the aqua green colour cladding shell and the dark shadow of the smooth outer stair case wall with the clouds rolling past.

VISION: I have been to this place many times and always wanted to capture the building on right (International Business Tower). It has beautiful triangle shape at top and always wondered this would look beautiful if captured from specific angle. I am using wide angle lens for all my shots (till I get my T/S Lens). I took a round of this whole building and this is the best angle I found where the top of building has some similarity to “Bat Man” head. The curved shape building (right) and straight building (left) I think worked well here. BEING PUBLISHED MATTERS!

VISION: The left building is newly opened and named “Harucus” claimed to be the highest building in Japan. Located in Abeno, Osaka. The building is so modern and too high that stands out to much in the city. I found the message “nice to meet you” on right building and lovely painting for visitors of the city. It looks like that the old building (right one) welcomed the new building, but he looks snob and too high, that he or she was afraid of his presence.

August is a beautiful time of year. It’s still summer and sunsets can, at times, display glorious colors throughout the house. Some days a beam streaks from the West and highlights the entire floor, from the back to the front. I love this time of year because of the silent array of sunset colors it brings. It’s palpable. The warm setting sun rests across my hands and eases them. For many people, the day stops. Everyone watches beautiful colored sunsets.

55
This day, the same feeling of comfort and peace came over me. I was visiting the Bean at Chicago’s Millennium Park. It was just before sunset. The park was still moving with people enjoying the remnants of the day. Then a deep, still quiet set in as the sun cast lowered across the sky in my mind.

VISION: The world around us is strained. Our lives are often pushed in one direction or another, and we sometimes have little control over it. It is hard to go against the current and to find time to stop. This is a darker piece, where I worked with only a few elements. My main goal was to highlight the arrow that goes against the current of the clouds. The rest is here to support the main subject and give some depth to the image.

Shortly before shooting, I had in mind the idea of a conceptual picture, very stripped and graphics, but purely a photography without drawing or adding of any other elements. The long exposure was needed to smooth the water as well as a shoot taken early in the morning to get the exact amount of light and a soft lateral light. The juxtaposition and the «choc» of material, matte wood and shiny material the scales are made of, offered an interesting contrast to my eyes.
(en)Visionography : FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY
75
The juxtaposition of three elements only and no more: water, wood, aluminum gave a raw, simple and modern aspect as I wanted it to be. The square format straightened the impression of something graphics and highlighted the bridge diagonal. The choice of placing the camera very closed to this ensemble and taking a shot «up to down» helped me to emphasize the impression of abyss. The choice of the title came to me spontaneously, I could easily imagine someone going down in the deep, into the abyss.

VISION: This image was taken in Chicago, this past August, on an architectural tour. This magnificent city offers an unparalleled array of architectural gems. I was totally in awe... which brings me to my vision... I will quote Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, since his quote pretty well encapsulates my creative process: “Music is liquid architecture; Architecture is frozen music.”... since music is my foundation, my ‘Muse’, in every creative aspect of my life... it is the sustenance which fulfills my purpose and the essence of my being... and architecture is the Man’s greatest evidence of ingenuity in creation of ‘Immortality’...

I just discovered two years ago that a new modern architectural complex was achieved in Lausanne near my hometown, the EPFL Rollex Center. The story behind the construction challenge and the VISION of the architect enchanted me instantly. I live in the East of France, a real poor region in term of modern architecture, so I rided my motocycle till Lausanne and tried to catch the essence of the architect VISION. It’s hard for me to explain in english, but when you’re there, the structure seems to be very light and give the feeling to float over the ground.

So I wanted to make people think this is a ship which is flying in the sky and I planed to let people see that in my image by closing the sky into one frame (the hole in the structure) to remind a porthole (spaceship window). And last but not least, the sky frame remind the shape of an eye, if you copy the image, reverse it (vertically) and paste it beside the original you can see two eyes watching you and giving you... Long exposure black and white photography as a concept is what first encouraged me to pick up a camera. I looked at some of the fine art photography that others produced and took my inspiration from that. I have followed other photographers and seen the beauty that they have produced and learnt a lot from people near and far. I challenged myself to not be afraid of failure and disappointment and to keep refining my photography and processing skills. Nothing is insurmountable with the right attitude and plenty of determination.

I worked hard at this image. I took several photographs before the light was right for me. I knew this would provide me with a peaceful feeling once converted to B+W and when the image began to take shape on my screen I felt the vision had become reality. This image has been a jumping off point for so many more. In many ways it was the first step along a creative route where I find space and time for myself. This is why I am a photographer.

My second visit to Japan last 2012 proved to be a more challenging one than the first. Having been living in a tropical country, staying outdoors for hours on winter is not necessarily a joy to be in. What made it worse was the strong winds which dropped the temperature a few more degrees. Heavy clouds covered Mt. Fuji and it cannot be seen. However, anticipating Mt. Fuji to show up will make you forget the physical conditions and I had to wait for hours to have an opportunity for a good shot. At last luck came to me after having a soothing hot ramen. This is because clouds began to clear.

It is like the grand entrance of the biggest star of a show. I was ready and nervous at the same time. Finally, here comes my chance. It was a sight I could never forget. Clouds were circling around it like an elegant dress of a dancer. I was not sure how long it will last and so I had no time for very long exposures. I panicked actually. After a few minutes, the theatre curtains started covering Mt. Fuji once again... until the next performance she said. The experience was rather, spiritual... and I was fortunate enough to capture it.

I grew up with science and have been believing in it. So I’m not a believer in God or after life. But when the tragic earthquake happened on March 11, 2011 in Japan, I had to confront so many painful visions. Life was really fragile in these visions and it was not easily acceptable. Instead of accepting it, I began, maybe instinctively, to seek a different answer through external or internal visions. The vision acceptable to me is transcending death. Some people call it “heaven” and some people call it “God”.
(en)Visionography : FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY
93
Unfortunately, in my worldview, I cannot easily accept words related to religious. Because of that, searching visions is more difficult for me. But So I began to believe what life or nature has a different modality which cannot be broken by death. I don’t know if life can show me the answer I’m looking for. Or maybe the visions don’t exist and they are only products of my imagination. But I cannot stop searching and will continue indefinitely.

I am prone to the odd spot of day-dreaming whilst walking down here and have often thought to myself that the sandbags could almost be alive. With this image, I wanted to give these sandbags a lifelike quality, as if they could be a pod of stingrays or sea-creatures we had never seen before, swimming off into the sunset. I deliberately kept the sky quite subdued and the water much lighter, hopefully, as a result, keeping the attention on the lumps.

There is a Shinto Shrine in the sea along the west coast of Hokkaido, Japan, that was photographed by Michael Kenna, and published in his book “Hokkaido”. Being a big fan of Kenna and being from Hokkaido, I wanted to visit the shrine and pay homage during my last visit in Japan. I did take some nice photos of the shrine, however, my favorite image turned out to be a scene my friend and I came across en route; a dozen or so stones, perhaps pylons, jutting out of the sea and a flock of birds just resting upon them.

Immediately recognizing the potential of the scenery, we jumped out of the car, set up our gear, and spent the next hour or so photographing the birds. They remained remarkably still during exposure, which, in this case, was around 2 minutes using a Hasselblad 203FE with a Carl Zeiss Planar-F 110mm F2 lens at F16 and a Hoya ND400 + ND8 filters stacked. The “vision” for the image was zen/minimalism, but there is hardly any post-processing here; just subtle retouching of the stones and birds to get the right contrast. The sea and sky were pretty much left untouched as they came out of the scanner.

I took it in a very special place that comes very high on my list of locations that I like to shoot the most: Newfoundland. This photograph is one of a wooden pier in the Twillingate area, a small town on the North Shore of the island. It is very often that icebergs float down from Labrador and wash up there, but that particular year I was not lucky enough to see any... Fortunately, there is more than enough material to compensate, and fishing piers certainly account for that.

With this image I wanted to show something that was very much out of this world, and still familiar enough that we could see ourselves in it. I wanted to convey the feeling that life seems often to offer us very little choice but to follow one single path, and though, if you look more closely to it, there are different ways. A boat could come up and sweep you off the path that was set to you, and take you away to clearer skies. Last time I was in Newfoundland was two years ago... Seems to me it’s time to think of going back!

VISION: My vision for this image was seeing the storm clouds approaching from the left was to make a minimal long exposure of the rocks and sea, then wait the storm clouds to be in position, then obtaining a second image, overlay this on the LE image, giving the effect of the rocks and clouds mirroring each other. Image shot in Northumberland at Bambugh England, Fuji X1 Pro 14mm lens. BEING PUBLISHED MATTERS!

VISION: The vision here was to highlight the harmonious rhythm of nature that we fail to perceive with our eyes. The careful blending of a very long exposure shot capturing star trails and a shorter exposure for the rocks/ water depicts nature as withdrawn and immersed in blissful solitude. VISION: On the same day as I got in the mailbox my new HITECH Filter, I managed to go before sunset to try to do a bunch of test photos with my new darling (HiTech) When I came to the place, the conditions for photography were amazing. During sunset I had a beautiful light that was reflected on the sea surface. I knew that I had to capture this moment. The small house that serves the fishing, at that moment recount stories of catching light. BEING PUBLISHED MATTERS!

In most of my recent work, the goal has been to construct an imaginary place that’s suitable for my own temporary mental escape. I’m usually concerned with how best to portray a quiet, serene, and meditative environment. I created “Fields Of Fairy” during a recent trip out west, where we experienced thick fog for about a week in a rural part of NW Oregon. Fog fascinates me because I don’t get much of it back home in NYC and I knew there was a great image to be made, so we spent the week driving around taking many shots. We finally came across this field of trees that gave me a perfect canvas. I conceptualized an idealistic world that was free of distractions, giving me relief

from my racing thoughts - a place that would allow me to take a focused journey of self-analysis and reflection. I felt like the centered composition and light between the trees was important to convey a sense of traveling down a mysterious, solitary path in a slow and methodical way with an intuitive knowing that there exists a bright, albeit unknown future ahead. In many ways, this parallels my own journey in photography. I still don’t know what my final purpose is, but I instinctively feel like I’m on the right path. I will continue taking this journey because someday, I might just figure out what’s behind that bright light between the trees.

VISION: You may think that the whole point of photo manipulation is the photo you see in the end. Usually, I just have a raw idea of what I need to express and after that, I’m just with a flow of my unconsciousness. The truth is that the whole point lies during the process of making it. When the photo is done, it’s liberating. With this particular one, I came up to one thought, apparently very important for me - we all need to grow up first in order to reach the mountains, but still, keep the innocence of a child. VISION: This photo is part of the series “a moment lost”, a series of selfportraits showing my feelings, my kind of being part of the world. Solitude, contemplation, tranquility are key elements of this work. Solitude as a positive counterpart of loneliness, completely resting in myself, silence, moments of amazement about the beauty of nature. This has been realized at my favorite tree alley in a beech forest on a foggy morning in autumn. There was atmospheric inversion, fog in the valleys and bright sunshine on the hills. After more than an hour waiting I was rewarded with the magic moment when the sun enlightened the fog.

Mostly of my work is inspired by the things that surround me. I shoot from the heart and I’m very much addicted with simple and ordinary things. On some occasions, when traveling if I cannot take my professional camera with me I use my phone (which can be very handy) or my Holga. Later on I see what I have and then the whole game of creation starts in the post production.

Sometimes I leave the image as it is “untouched”! This image is a composition of three images I took on my way to Seville airport last summer. The solitude of the tree and the simplicity of the building and the birds flying in the distance were basically the source of inspiration to create this image.

Each year there is an explosion of Dandelion’s (a common weed), if you see one in your garden, before long you’ll see hundreds. Their method of spreading seed is simple but effective, each flower head turns to seeds, each seed is attached to a very light feathery structure, one wisp of wind and the whole seed head gets blown away, to float on the breeze until the seed reaches the ground, to there by start the next batch of life.

Seeing this particular Dandelion on the roadside verge by my house had me imagining the universe at it’s very beginning, exploding into life through the ‘big bang’, and the material that is cast out into the darkness coalesces into the universe as we know it. And thus my vision for this image was born.

VISION: In this case the vision is from inside, this image is part of a personal project that play with the emotional fluctuations,in which no matter the technique used or the processing... only matters the relief of the moment, the need to shout the accumulated silence, fears, longings, empty, struggles... although those emotions remain on paper or on an image... the project is called “emotional egocentricity". VISION: It all started with a challenge-to capture that magical moment of a wet tennis ball spun in the air. Armed with only a tripod, a timer and a whole lot of patience, without any assist, this was hard. Adding to the fact that I have to use two black plastic box covers as a background, makes it even more of a challenge. Lost count of how many times I have tried and failed. In the end, I realised, it was all well worth it. May I present to you, the Milky Way. In the middle of all the chaos, of flying water droplets, there is something beautiful.

VISION: I like to show “my world” as simple as possible with gray tones and to me the image should emanate tranquillity, timelessness and finity. This is the first time I captured a still life with simple but beautiful objects (garlic and figs)? My vision: the garlic and figs sprouted from the dark soil (out of “nothing” or darkness). They grow and become attractive living objects with all their beauty and shortcomings (just like people…). After a ephemeral existence they degrade and vanish into “nothing” (or darkness) again; repetitive and timeless…

VISION: These coneflowers are past their prime - they are dying. My vision for this subject is to show beauty in death. In B&W photography we have shapes, forms, lines, textures and luminosity to work with. All have a role to play in this creation. Fortunately the ‘pose’ of the two flowers, one larger, one smaller - one with it’s petal (arm) around the other in a protective embrace tweaks our emotions and let’s us know the end is approaching. But yet they stand erect and proud... beautiful in their last days.

VISION: To preserve the moment in such a way as to help my subjects see, hopefully in a unique and special manner, how they were and to help them remember how they felt at the time the photograph was taken have been my primary objectives each time I take a photograph. I wanted to highlight the seeming tranquility and silent confidence of the swimmer in this photograph, oblivious to the frenzy of splashing water and shouting throng as he came in second. VISION: This is a seascape scene at Hastings, UK. My vision was to create an eye drawing geometrical image out of a relative normal scene by utilising the interesting pavement texture and the symmetry of the three benches. Long exposure technique has been used to simplify the sky.
