ALWAYS ACCESS THE FRONT ROW The Volvo Ocean Race is the World’s longest professional sporting event and leading offshore sailing competition. As a Freelance Photographer and because of my relationship with sailing boats, I thought that it would be a nice chance to get involved in this adventure, shooting photos. So, it was time to try out the Camerapixo’s Press Card. Artur and Anetta showed great support for my project and backed me up with everything needed in order to obtain from the Volvo Ocean Race organization, my accreditation as a Media Independent Photographer for the event. All media facilities were there for my use and I’ve met all kind of interesting people and great artists. My accreditation always enabled me to access the front row, where the action was taking place. Thank you Camerapixo for your support!

HOW DID YOU COME TO THE WORLD OF PHOTOGRAPHY?
MARCELLO MACHELLI
MM : 1977 My first book on photography: A Complete Treatise on Photography M.J. Langford. Many others followed .I started with a Canon AE1 and two lenses, a 50mm and a 135mm. I made a dark room at home, for black and white and flat lith film. I worked as a location scout for film productions and then as a stage photographer in the 80s. An immense satisfaction. I finished my photography studies when I graduated in creative direction. My thesis was on Olivero Toscani and Benetton's made in Italy. Since then, I have worked a lot on video, television, promos, web and editorial productions but plain photography. I was missing it and I started again with the first digital dslr early in 2000 to the point of being a professional not so long ago.
FOUR QUESTIONS
HOW DISPLAYING YOUR WORK ON SOCIAL NETWORKS HAS AFFECTED YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY? MM : Social networks can be a great resource for photographers, very useful just for professionals who invest upon. They allow you to search for customers in a precise way, with the occasional “like of colleagues. It's nice to be appreciated by a photographer, but a lot more, to receive a job or an assignment. Customers do not visit general photography groups to put a like on your pictures and choose you. You have to search for them carefully, outside this network, targeting geographic areas or habits. My presence on the web is articulated, among social and professional sites. The first ones take you where the product is. On Facebook I have a professional profile and on Flickr a normal one. These are the two free social spaces I use. I have my own site, I'm also part of a professional Italian network of photographers to mark my presence on the territory. List but not last, there is Camerapixo, which is one of a kind; a publisher that qualifies me internationally as well as giving me access to the most prestigious events. A must have service.
OF ALL THE TYPES OF PHOTOS YOU SHOOT, WHICH ARE THE MOST INSPIRING FOR YOU? WHICH ARE THE HARDEST FOR YOU TO SHOOT?
YOUR FAVOURITE GEAR? MM : I rent lenses for special occasions, like sport events: 200-400 VRII f4 or the Nikon 85 1.4 for some portraits. My favorite lens for the portrait: NIKON AF-S 200 F2 G VR II.
MM : Shooting portraits is not easy when your customers are ordinary people. They need their time to relax, express and finally reveal themselves. It is not so easy to strike and hold a pose or relax your face, for those who are not professionals. On a portrait you reveal yourself, for a short time, just enough for a photographer to catch it. Face has shapes that need to be interpreted, something to model with light, enhance with the environment, showing to be unique. I find it difficult to manage a complex set, outdoors, with different people, objects and professionals. Organization and work must go hand in hand, like a tango. You need to focus only on that subject, ignoring the rest. It can be difficult to manage all this and direct the shooting. I have just finished a wonderful shooting in a museum in Rome. It is not the usual place with beautiful objects on display, but a chaos made of a thousand pieces, dust, disorder and surprises, something that is very similar to my creative process. I worked with beautiful people, full of enthusiasm, with pleasure in their eyes. Working with nice people is important, we realize when we deal with someone difficult, nervous or moody. I avoid these customer if I can.

In this plateau in central Italy there are herds of horses in the wild that wander undisturbed for the entire expanse, far from any human interference. Over the years I often come back to this place, and I never tire of going there and join these highland wanderers.

This is Djupalonssandur in Snaefellsness Peninsula. There are so many tales around this beach and rock formation, so many stories about women, fishermen, bishops and elves that they could be put all together and turned into a TV show... All the folklore is also a reminder of a very old history and culture. People long gone remain in the air, stone and water as if their tales were carved in the rock, their feelings sprayed over by gusts and emotions creeping up with the ocean. Even the clouds seem to be marching on their memories’ command. Places like this one give me chill bumps. They are landmarks frozen in time keepers of our history, nostalgia for some, pieces of rock for others but there for everyone... 99

This is the kind of shot that I wanted to take a long time ago. The kind of photograph that you have already taken in your head without having been there yet. The kind of picture that you want and you will do what you have to to make it happen... For instance, in order to get this one I pretty much stayed the whole day waiting for the double rainbow and for a person standing on a rock for a few seconds, all that almost at the same time, long enough for me to make this 3 shot panorama. I can say that I am very happy with the result as it is exactly what I had envisioned years ago.

THE WATERFALL
PHOTOGRAPHY MAGAZINE
Seljalandsfoss is another mother nature’s beauty. It is so big and impressive that it can be seen from the road at least three miles away. Hiking to that vintage point was not very easy as it rained and snowed the day before and the wind was blowing the mist right on my filters. I manages to make that time exposure between rain showers, misty winds and me cleaning water droplets off my filter but I really enjoyed the weather sealed gear, it’s a huge plus, my very first camera would have never worked long enough in those conditions to get anything from there.
