You are doing very inspiring landscape photography; can you share your creative insights? Jay | When it comes to photography, light is my primary subject. I tend to capture and process images so that the “nature and feel” of the photograph are preserved. Varina | More often than not, I am looking for ways to create a subtle or minimalist image that conveys a sense of serenity. I try to create images that speak of comfortable solitude and quiet peace.
By the look of your site, would it be safe to classify you as landscape photographers, primarily? Jay | Although I enjoy other kinds of photography, you can safely say that
landscape photography is my primary interest. Varina | I am a wilderness photographer, educator, author, and blogger. I love all kinds of photography, including macro, portraiture, and both studio and outdoor photography.
Your landscape photography is stunning; Each series is original, beautiful, where do you draw your inspiration and ideas from? Varina | What a nice thing to say! Thank you! For me, inspiration comes from nature. When I am on location, I don’t start shooting right away. I try to see, hear, and feel everything around me for a few minutes – and very quickly, I start to see the photographic possibilities. When I have a clear idea of what I want to create, then I set up my shot. Jay | Photography is an art that

evolves over time, and with it our ideas about what make good photography. Sometimes, my photography is influenced by Varina’s work. For example, I started shooting macro because I think Varina is producing some spectacular close-up shots.
Do you travel and if so how much time do you spend each year traveling? Jay & Varina | We travel as often as we can, but we have lots of responsibilities at home, so we can’t stay on location for long periods of time. We usually take two or three week-long trips every year, and several three or four day trips whenever we can fit them in. On average, we spend about 30-40 days on location each year. Because we have to limit our travel, we do lots of research to make the most of each trip. We want to be in the right place at the right time in order to maximize the potential for optimal photographic conditions.

Jay and Varina, do you work together or go separate ways with own projects? Jay & Varina | We do a little of each. When we are on location, we often split up to look for inspiration… but we don’t stray too far from one another because we often trade lenses for a specific shot. We sometimes speak or present separately at conferences and other gatherings as well. On the other hand, we always work as a team to produce our educational materials – including our eBooks, webinars, workshops, and classes. Our separate websites showcase our individual portfolios, but we share our blog, and our educational materials are available from both sites.
How did you get your start in photography? What lead you to it? Varina | I’ve been shooting since I was a kid. My dad was generous with
his sturdy little Pentax K1000, and I took my first photography class when I was 14. In college, I spent long hours working in the dark room - and I spent all my extra money buying film and photo paper. I purchased my own SLR when I was 18... and by then, I knew I wanted to be a professional photographer. I finally went pro in 2005 - and I’m pretty sure I have the best job in the world!
Jay | I never really took photography seriously until late 1999 when the digital cameras were just coming onto the scene. I purchased my first Nikon 990

in late 1990, and fell in love with photography (something I always wanted to learn). I purchased my first DSLR in 2001 and started seriously pursuing landscape photography.
At what point did you go pro? In other words, when did it become your major source of income? And what decisions did you have to confront on that path? Jay | When I purchased my first DSLR, I had no intention of becoming a pro. At the time, photography was just a hobby for me. After getting requests for workshops and speaking engagements, I turned my attention to earning money around 2005. I don’t worry too much about generating income from photography as long as I like what I am doing. Why? Because I want to make sure that pursuit of income does not ruin my passion. I have a full time job, and photography is not my major source of income.

Varina | In 2005, I started submitting images to stock agencies, and building an online portfolio. Soon, I was hired to shoot interiors for the Marriott Hotel chain. I photographed a series of hotels over the next two years before choosing freelance work over nightmarish corporate politics. I’ve never regretted that choice. Running a business is hard work, and we are always adjusting our business plan to reflect a changing market.
What does a typical workday look like for you? Jay | Varina is the full-time photographer, while I am just a part time photographer (I have a full time job). So, I spend less than two or three hours working on photography each day.

engagements, work with our sponsors, and prepare blog posts. There are thousands of small tasks that are essential to running a business – and I spent much of my time getting those things done. When we are on location, things are completely different. We rise early to shoot the sunrise, spend all day hiking, exploring, and shooting in any weather conditions – and then fall into bed late. The next day, it begins again.
What were the biggest challenges for you in starting your landscape photography business?
What have become your biggest marketing tools in the last two years? Jay & Varina | We do most of our marketing though our blog, our websites, and social media. Our blog is the hub for content creation, and all our educational materials are available there. From there, some content is distributed to social media and our subscribers. Jay | In my opinion the biggest challenge a photographer faces in starting a landscape photography business is developing non-photography skills… marketing, web design, writing, ecommerce know-how, “people skills”, and so on. Photographers are often under the impression that setting up a spiffy website is all it takes to get started in the photography business. This is seldom the case.

Varina | I agree with Jay on this one. Jay and I are lucky to have complimentary skill sets. I have a degree in Information Technology, so I’m good with computers – but I also have a background in language arts, which helps with writing and editing. Jay has a marketing degree and works in project management – both of which are essential skills for business owners. Running a business takes a variety of skills, many of which don’t come easily to an artist! We both have to tackle problems that are outside our “comfort zone”.

What have been your most exciting and challenging photography projects?
What special skills and equipment would you say are required for LANDSCAPE photography?
Jay & Varina | One of our biggest projects has been building up a collection of eBooks for sale. Today we offer 17 eBooks for sale through our websites, online retailers, and various affiliate programs. We always have another one in the works. Right now, we’re working on the fourth book in our Workflow Series. Another project involves teaching a series of in-depth workshops with our good friend, Colby Brown – an excellent photographer and humanitarian based in Colorado. We will be teaching Beyond Exposure Workshops in five cities next year.
Jay & Varina | Landscape photography can be physically demanding. We often hike 8-10 miles a day for 3-5 days at a time, while carrying more than 30 pounds (~14 kilos) of gear on our backs. On top of that, we usually wake early and stay up late to photograph sunrise and sunset. We work out year-

Varina | My photographs have become increasingly minimalist over the years. They are a reflection of the sense of perfect peace I feel in the wilderness. I try to convey that emotion to my viewers so that they can experience it in their own way. Jay | Although this is not always true, the crucial element that I love to photograph is dramatic light.
Do you think there is such a thing as someone really having a “natural eye” for photography? Jay | There is more to photography than just having a “natural eye”. Photography often requires us to combine technical and creative skills to produce an image that produce an impact. So, while some photographers may be able to “see” the photograph, they may not be able to effectively capture it. The most productive photographs are those who can use both these skills effectively to create a photograph with impact.
Varina | I do think that many people have a natural eye for photography. Some of our students find it much easier than others to create a “pleasing” composition. But I agree with Jay. Having a natural eye is an advantage, but it’s not enough. It’s important to understand the capabilities of your camera so that you can create the image you see in your head.
What are your favorite techniques or methods? Varina | It’s tough to choose just a few techniques as favorites. I use a variety of techniques to help simplify my images… narrow depth of field, slow shutter speed, macro, and so on. I think it’s less about techniques for me – and more about working to create a finished product that matches the picture in my head. I love that challenge. Jay | I don’t have a favorite technique or method, but I do have a well-established workflow. My philosophy is to make all attempts to get it right in the camera. If I can’t get it right in the camera, I will resort to bracketing and

manually blending image using our iHDR workflow.
How much emphasis do you put on post-production? Jay | Photographers often develop their own post-production workflow and style. Mine involves developing images that retain a natural look. This does not mean that I am against taking artistic liberties with my images… though I do believe it’s important to be honest about things like that. Varina | I used to take my film into the darkroom for developing and printing. I wouldn’t have someone else do that for me because it limited my artistic choices. I still believe that post-production is a critical part of the process, and I won’t allow a blind mathematical algorithm to make decisions for me. Digital cameras are getting better and better, but all those complex formulas can’t begin to match the capabilities of the human eye. It only takes a few moments to choose the appropriate color balance, adjust the contrast, and...

...sharpen an image for printing… but getting it right can make a huge difference.
Finally, what advice would you give someone who was interested in landscape photography? Jay & Varina | Learn everything you can. Equipment doesn’t matter if you don’t know how to use it... so worry less about what you are shooting with, and more about what you don’t know. Read everything you can, invest in classes rather than fancy equipment, and ask for honest critiques from photographers whose images you admire.
Are there any trends or tendencies in photography today on which you care to comment? Jay | There are two paradigm shifts happening in photography right now.
First, high-quality digital photography equipment is becoming rapidly affordable and ubiquitous. The camera on my mobile phone can easily outperform a digital point-n-shoot camera from 2001. Second, the consumption of digital images is moving from traditional paper-based media to online media on computers, cell phones, and tablets. These paradigm shifts are altering the way we take photos as well as the business of photography. Varina | Jay’s answer is spot on. As photographers and business owners, we have to watch those trends carefully. It can be tough to keep up with changing technology - so that we can use it and teach it - and finding time for social networks and other online media can be time-consuming. But there are major benefits – not the least of which is being able to build connections and relationships with real people.

G. Brad Lewis is internationally recognized as a leading volcano and nature photographer. His volcano images have appeared on the covers of a number of magazines, including Life, Natural History, Photographer’s Forum, and Geo, and within the pages of Time, Outside, Fortune, Newsweek, Stern, National Geographic, and many other publications. Additionally, Brad’s lava and erupting volcano pictures have received numerous awards and been widely exhibited. Interviews with Brad have been broadcast on the NBC Today Show, CBS Evening News, and sev-
eral Discovery and Disney Channel programs. Print interviews and photo essays of his volcano lava photographs have been featured in many magazines, including Photo District News, DigitalFoto, Studio Photography & Design, and Outdoor Photographer. His photographs are found in numerous private, corporate, and public collections around the world, as well as in fine galleries and through major stock agencies. Inspired by beauty and variety, Brad is based out of Hawaii, Utah, and Alaska, traveling several months each year to pursue his art.
“The goal of my photography is to connect the viewer to a deep understanding and appreciation of the natural world. In my “LavArt” series of images, I utilize the movement, light, and texture of the world’s most active volcano, to open human emotions to the pulse the planet.

Máximo enjoys photography simply by taking pictures, that single moment is probably what makes him love photography. Alone with his camera even in crowded places, is a perfect moment for personal meditation. To live in a state of permanent suggestive pictures is a fascinating experience and forces Máximo to live and understand life in a thousand different ways.
