Reworking the traditional representation of digital fabrication and concrete, our modeling, casting, iteration assignment sought to have a unique modular structure allowing for organic formations. Playing with the scale of our objects, we can see these amoebas as the microscopic conception and a human scale intervention. Modules are simple, and have wide

constructions. Taken from precedent examples organic, soft shapes were frameworks

for many things. First time

creating the mold around the initial model. First time printing the product. We created large eye holes to be pronounced on the surface area and created shapes that are sturdy while still being playful.

By splitting the mold into three parts, it allowed for a simple print. Our next round may consider another arrangement on the printing-bed as this printing layout produced a lot of unnecessary supports increasing print time. Tabs on the exterior helped line up the two molds though could be increased for more stability and locking mechanisms such as binder clips to hold mold close. Eye hole should extend past the top to reduce pull from the cement viscosity.

7

Conclusion:

Overall our test of asymmetrical forms as well as the organic stacking method worked out well. We had some issues in terms of concrete quality, thought molds released well and stayed intact for multiple casts. Next iteration will focus on streamlining form, as well as playing with interconnectivity and play.

Iteration 2

Print time: 3 hr., 35 min

arch 433 | digital fabrication

Design changes for iteration two include smaller eye holes, and more playful, bean-like shapes. A goal was to produce something tactilely interesting. To create the rounded face was key in creating a less concrete aesthetic module. However the visual difference the topo-surface lines due to the print quality add visual difference from a purely smooth form. Ridges remained, and holes became smaller and oblong. A smaller overall shape decreased the modules weight, as well as thickness.

Molds kept similar structure of a removable eye hole, dual detach sides, and

a major improvement over the

needed closed rather than the full base of the mold. It also provided an exact eye-hole every-time whether that is a pro or con in terms of variability of opening control.

soft form. Their ability to stack, and support each other creates motion, and movement through a static structure. Changes for iteration 3 could involved hole arrangement, and express, as well as gear scale.

Iteration 3:

Print time: 4 hrs., 7-32 min.

Iteration 3 became the culmination of minor design

We had success from iteration details through our different design uses the medium print quality retaining the toposurface found in the second iteration. We’ve also softened organic shape, experimenting with different softness radii.

Molds combined the eye hole into a single base which allows for the seamless concave eye-hole opening. Extending the piece above the rim molds creates a surface to remove bottom piece. Three curved molds with the differing eye hole locations and radii were printed for our multiple pieces.

We initiated the CNC, mold making, and casting assignment continuing the ideology of generating modularity with organic elements. Experimenting with the borders of our forms to make interesting interlocking modules and varying height to create topographical correlation between them. Modules take a two dimensional precedent and reinterpret it into three dimensional surfaces

Iteration 1

Iteration was a great attempt in experiencing how CNC works on our form. We

cut was too big which gave us a good base to resize and recut our form with an appropriate scale. The CNC machine stamped an unexpected but beautiful topographical texture to our form. When it came time to silicon mold, we were spot on with the measurement and made the mold with the last drop. Lastly, contrary to our previous project where we

the concrete mold, the silicon mold was very easy to remove

departments including CNC model, silicon mold, and plaster cast. The pattern and formations of the tiles were very interesting. Our next iteration focuses on using the shape of this tile to create a geometrical border while keeping the organic shape.

Iteration

The second iteration brought us some challenges.

liked the vertical topographic play of the tiles but felt that the module was too simple. As a result, we started creating different iterations to create void which will bring interest

process includes, splitting the module in half, extruding it upwards, and subtracting a quadrant of a sphere on diagonally opposite corners to create a shell-like module. We were intrigued by the depth and pattern possibilities this module can create. When it came to the actual making process, CNC model, Silicon mold, and plaster casting when very smooth and successful. To our expectations, the CNC model was developed with lots of topographical textures that enhanced the depth of our module and the pattern it created.

35

Conclusion: All in all, this iteration was a great step towards our goal for the module. The patterns created were amazing trying to disguise the viewer with a geometrical base with some organic elements. The pattern gives us a visual dilemma regarding the scale of this module with many possibilities.

Building off of learned material this semester, we approached Printed Pottery as an exploratory exercise of different forms building off of the given Grasshopper

variations and substitutions within them to create new and complex printed geometries. Working through challenges of stability, material properties, and aesthetic qualities, this project was the culmination of our semester of digital fabrication techniques, putting into practice all we had done so far.
