Minister backs off on dam closure PAUL RUDAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Energy Minister Rich Coleman backed off on a suggestion to decommission the John Hart Dam following a tour with BC Hydro engineers on Friday morning. “This is also the water supply. That’s different than the other (dams),” said Coleman, following the tour of the Campbell River dam and nearby power generating station. Last week, Black Press reported that Coleman was exploring the options of decommissioning the John Hart Dam and the Ruskin Dam located in the Fraser Valley. The minister is concerned with the costs of upgrading both facilities: the John Hart project is estimated at $1.35 billion and Ruskin is projected to cost $700 million. Other BC Hydro upgrade projects are expected to increase electricity rates by as much as 50 per cent in the next five years. The Campbell River project involves replacing the water pipelines – that run from the reservoir to the generating station – with Continued on Page A3

Andrew Budd, who mans the free drop-off centre for Emterra, has had people drop off branches and tree stumps that are too big. But because the centre is still new, he has been lenient up until now. The centre will not accept

individual branches that are more than three inches (7.5 cm) wide in diameter. Jennifer Peters, the city’s utilities manager, said residents may be getting confused because they are mixing up the drop-off cen-

tre’s rules with the city’s curbside yard waste collection regulations. “For curbside we’re asking people to cut branches and prunings to a size smaller than three Continued on Page A3

You can support dry grad and order your full truck load of yellow cedar before April 15. Just drop by the main office at Carihi with delivery details. The wood, donated by Fearless Contracting, will be split and delivered April 16-17. For $75, a full truck load will be delivered and you can stay warm, enjoy summer campfires and support Dry Grad. Pick up is also available for $65 per load. For more information, call the office at Carihi 250-286-6282 or Phyllis at 250-287-8921.

The owners and staff of Tangles invite you to celebrate their 20th Anniversary celebration on Friday, April 15th. Join them for refreshments and a chance to win great prizes! Originally called “The Glamour Centre” about 50 years ago, the name was changed to “Tangles” when it was purchased by Dave and Ann Mansbridge in the Tyee Plaza. George and Jane Super purchased it from them and changed the name to Tangles Hair Salon & Day Spa and later moved the Salon to Shoppers Row.

Dams: John Hart to undergo environmental review Continued from Page 1 tunnels through the bedrock as well as the station itself. The John Hart Lake reservoir is also the water supply for the city. While the future of the Ruskin Dam remains in limbo, John Hart appears to be “safe” and the project is expected to move ahead. However, it will be subject to a review under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. The review

is expected to begin later this summer. C o l e m a n d o e s n’ t expect the review to take too long given BC Hydro’s good working relationship with Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Hydro has also held several open houses over the past three years to inform the public and to gather feedback on the John Hart project. And if all goes well, work could begin in

late 2012 and last for four to five years. The John Hart dam and generating station were built in 1947, and currently supplies 11 per cent of Vancouver Island’s electricity. The upgrade would boost that output. Coleman still wants B.C. Hydro to “re-state its business case” on the upgrade projects to the BC Utilities Commission. He wants a better explanation of how

hydro intends to pay for the construction and the cost benefits. “It needs to be better understood by the public,” said Coleman. Representatives of BC Hydro will be in Campbell River on Thursday for a Chamber of Commerce luncheon at the Coast Discovery Inn. They will be talking about contract opportunities as was as an update on the John Hart reconstruction project.

Dams: John Hart to undergo environmental review Continued from Page 1 feet and have them tied with twine or biodegradable string in secure bundles,” said Peters. “But you don’t have to chop them up to that smaller size if you’re going to the drop-off centre and it doesn’t need to be bundled.” There is further confusion surrounding the facility’s opening date.

The city opened the centre April 1 but Budd said he’s been operating the drop-off depot since January, and people have been using it since then. “The contractor opened it earlier but we weren’t sending people up there because we needed some more information from the contractor as far as liability,” said Peters.

Because the dropoff centre is accessed through private property (Wei Wai Kai First Nation land), the city needed to ensure there was a firm agreement in place between the city, the contractor Emterra and the First Nations. The yard waste dropoff centre is open Friday to Tuesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each

day and is located west of the Inland Island Highway by the Shell Convenience Centre. Items not accepted at the facility include: rocks, stumps, painted or treated wood, garbage, kitchen waste and home renovation or construction materials. All materials are taken to a compost facility in the Comox Valley.

Duncan trumpets lightkeeper retention, Eat In2X2.5 or stands ground on Point Race replacement Take Out ALISTAIR TAYLOR CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Incumbent MP and Conservative candidate John Duncan reflected on his legacy during the opening of his Campbell River campaign office on Friday. “I think back to 1993 when I was first elected,” Duncan said. “The party I represented – the Reform Party – said we needed a place at the table. The West was not properly represented. “I am actually very proud of that heritage.” From there, Duncan and the party (after merging with the Prog ressive Conservatives) has evolved from third party status, to opposition, to forming the government.

“That legacy, that history is unique in Canada,” Duncan said. “I have been part of all of this...we have gone from basically a strong voice in Ottawa to a region and a province in Canada that’s at the centre of new ideas.” Being in government has changed things for Duncan, providing him with more resources to enact change. “In opposition, I often felt like a one-

armed paper hanger,” Duncan said. “Now I have people who can do things.” Duncan cited the lighthouse destaffing issue that first arose in 1990 as an example. “It was a really political battle,” he said. They thought they had it won but it came back. “This time the light station issue became one that was resolved through collaboration with my peers who

are obviously more in the government and in cabinet.” Previous gover nments did not consult with British Columbia, Duncan added. “We’ re now very much taken seriously and our needs are very much being heard,” he said. On another coastal issue that the government stood fast on – replacing the Coast Guard Cutter Point Race with a smaller K Class vesssel that has been criticized by mariners on the West Coast, Duncan was convinced that the government’s position was the right one. “That boat has served very, very well,” Duncan said. It was first slated for replacement in 1998 and Duncan was involved in the fight to

retain it. “It’s now 13 years later, the boat is almost 30 years old,” Duncan said. In that time there has been criticism from the auditor general concerned about the Coast Guard’s aging fleet and a lack of investement in it. T h e Po i n t R a c e replacement is part of a revitalization plan that is to include standardization of the fleet. “ T h e wo rl d w a s searched for an appropriate model,” Duncan said. “The K Class 47-footer was viewed as the boat that could address all of the needs. “I also recognize that this is a very emotional issue for people,” he added. “I do believe that the K Class is the right vessel.

Layton says HST money will stay in British Columbia ERIN HALUSCHAK BLACK PRESS

Promising to keep billions of dollars in the province if the HST is voted to be removed, NDP leader Jack Layton rallied support for first-time Vancouver North Island candidate Ronna-Rae Leonard Thursday afternoon in Courtenay. Wi t h a c ap a c i t y crowd surrounding Layton who spoke briefly alongside Leonard, the leader focused not only on the upcoming provincial referendum, but on the importance of bringing local

issues to Ottawa. “(Ronna-Rae) and I share many things in common. She’s been a city councillor and shares a lot of the same preoccupations as I did when I was on city council for a lot of years — things like cycling, social justice, dealing with affordable housing and those issues that you know she’s played such a lead role in pursuing,” he said. “She understands the issues in the community because she’s been working on those issues for so many years and that’s the kind of represen-

tative that you want ... someone who can take your concerns to Ottawa rather than the other way around.” Layton also addressed the HST debate. “People in British Columbia, and especially here on the Island are known to be democrats because you don’t like it when a government says one thing and does another, do you?” he asked. “When

this HST was brought in ... Mr. Harper certainly never told anybody and Mr. Duncan never told anyone that they were going to vote to bring the HST to British Columbia, did they? In fact, I don’t think they would have gotten elected if they would have said that. “Of course now, when the people of British Columbia are getting ready to go to

a referendum, which they fought for ... we’re sitting under the possibility under Mr. Harper’s rules that if you vote to cancel the HST program, you stand to lose $1.6 billion dollars that Mr. Harper’s going to take back,” Layton added. “Well, I’m here to tell you that with an NDP government, that money stays in British Columbia.”

Agriculture minister likes city’s farming plans PAUL RUDAN

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Far mer Patrick Evans was busy working near the entrance of the Shelter Point Distillery when he mused about B.C.’s new agriculture minister. “Don’s a good guy and he really wants to understand what’s going on…I just don’t know how long he’s going to last,” said Evans, whose family owns the Shelter Point Farm in Oyster River (for merly the UBC Farm) which is also home to the new distillery. Don McRae was appointed Minister of Agriculture on March

However, for the time being, the minister is touring the North Island region to learn more about agriculture, fish farming and potential opportunities for growth. “I’d love to see more value-added agriculture…and Shelter

Point (distillery) is an excellent example,” said McRae, who is also the Liberal MLA for the Comox Valley riding. McRae was in Campbell River on Friday. He started the day by touring a fish farm off Quadra Island and then learned more about the city’s new agriculture plan. The plan is to create more opportunities for small- and mediumsized farms, hopefully on some of the 5,017 hectares in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) that surrounds the city. Currently, there are just eight farms in the ALR on a total of 41.2 hectares. But most of

that land isn’t cleared and the majority is for pasture, and to grow hay and silage. There are a 11 more farms outside the ALR and they comprise 29.5 hectares, of which 16.2 hectares are on cleared land. That’s not much and the financial retur ns reflect the total. According to the city’s agriculture plan, sales from the farms amount to nearly $129,000 per year or $6,784 per farm. The hope is to encourage more small-scale

farms on land close to sea level – where its warmer – on properties that already have access to water and power. And if these farms are developed, larger farms might follow on ALR land. McRae has seen how farms in the five- to 15-acre range are doing well in the Comox Valley and believes there are opportunities available in Campbell River. “It’s good to see the city is interested,” he said.

Our View

Long-shot promises Voters are used to politicians breaking, or not fulfilling, the promises made during election campaigns. For 36 days Canada’s federal leaders are crisscrossing the country expressWe say: Welcome ing their devotion to Canadians, trying to woo support of voters – many to our new of whom would rather not be having tabloid format another election. This time, Stephen Harper’s ConserMirror vatives have made some promises that would actually benefit ordinary Canadians. A $2.5 billion tax cut to allow income-sharing between parents with children, a $275 million fitness credit for

adult taxpayers, and an increase to the annual limit Canadians can deposit into tax-free savings accounts from $5,000 to $10,000. But all three promises come with a clever catch. All have the proviso that they wouldn’t be enacted until the federal budget is balanced. Don’t hold your breath. With this year’s budget $29.3 billion in the red, most analysts predict it will take four to five years to balance the books. And that’s assuming there aren’t any extraordinary expenses like another recession, natural disasters or an international crisis. Canadians may never see the Tories’ pledges come to

fruition. Even if they win a majority this time, those promises likely wouldn’t be enacted until the waning days of their mandate. On the one hand these conditional promises are a clever strategy. They come with a built-in excuse so Harper can never be criticized for breaking them. And they’re a ready-made platform for the next election campaign—a seductive enticement for voters anxious to keep a little more cash in their pockets to tune C out or forget about the conditions attached to those tax breaks when they mark their ballots. o – Black Press t i H g f v f Filed for publication with the Mirror v Mr. John Duncan, MP; b There is something happening in your backyard thats once again needs your immediate attention. w Young salmon are about to leave the freshwater lake and river systems bound for their life in the open sea.p But first they must pass through the fish farm infesteds waters on the inside of Vancouver Island. Farmedr salmon have been implicated in acting as a repositoryp for sea lice and other pathogens and when juvenile wild salmon swim by these farms, they pick up a potentially lethal dose. Currently, there is no clear path for the wild salmon to swim through. Every single channel and passage to the north of the Straight Of Georgia has salmon farms situated in them. There are no fish farm free routes for the wild salmon to take. Several agencies have been pressing to clear out a single route, to have the fish farms removed through Hoskyn Channel and Okisollo Channel. Given the huge labyrinth of islands and channels on the BC coast, surely one farm free route is not too much to ask to ensure the survival of wild salmon? Of particular concern this year is the sockeye salmon. While last year’s run was inexplicably huge, the young salmon running to sea this spring are from the 2009 run which was a disaster. The returning spawning salmon in 2009 amounted to only 10% of what was expected and so every single young sockeye running to sea this spring is vital for the continued viability of that run Continued on A11

A really nice young man needs our help and support

Paul Rudan No, really

The first words Justin Webb ever spoke weren’t as important or meaningful as the three words he uttered last weekend. But Justin is no child. He’s a young man who recently turned 20. I first met him when he was 14. He was a rail-thin Grade 9 student playing football on a pretty good Timberline junior-varsity team. Justin wasn’t one of our key players, but he contributed to a winning season. The next year was different. He was still thin, but he had sprouted to 6’3” and was definitely one of the team leaders. While it wasn’t a great season, it was certainly memorable for me, the coach. We lost every game, but it was one of my most enjoyable seasons, all because of the players,

like Justin, who were totally committed to improving every day. While we didn’t win on the field, these young men were learning how to become real winners in the game of life. Hard work, determination, team work – all things that will benefit them in the many years to come after football. Justin went on to play two outstanding seasons with the varsity team and then graduated from Timberline in 2009. Rather than head straight off to university, he chose to remain in Campbell River and worked at Quality Foods while his girlfriend Katie completed Grade 12. Then, last August, they were on their way together to Prince George to attend the University of Northern

British Columbia. Always a smart kid, Justin was doing well in the Environmental Sciences program when he started to notice something unusual. He was having problems with his left arm and leg. They weren’t working like they were supposed to and, heading into the new year, the condition progressively became worse. They thought it might be multiple sclerosis. They were wrong. It was a primitive neuroectodermal tumor in his brain; a spiderweb-like tumour – unlike a lump or mass – which usually occurs in young children. It’s also inoperable. And as the web spread, Justin became unable to walk or even talk. He was taken to Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria where last week he began a month-long

regime of radiation treatments, to be followed by chemotherapy. His mom Diane and dad Art are there to support Justin, and they need your help too. On Saturday, April 30, there will be a fundraiser for Justin Webb in the Timberline cafeteria. Details are still being worked out and this is a heads-up to make some time that day to help support a very nice young man. Watch the Mirror for more information or visit my Facebook page. While your at it, say hello to Justin on his page. There’s also some good news to report. Diane told me that Justin was able to start speaking again on the weekend. Just a few words but none more meaningful than the three he told his dad, “I love you.”

fearful and ignore the complexity and simply blame salmon farming.” While researchers, re gulators, private companies, stewardships groups, environmental organizations and others work to develop and implement best practices that protect the environment and enable business, a small group continues to spread misinformation about the effects of salmon. “We operate under strict regulations and our operations are

regularly monitored, inspected and audited to ensure we are not causing harm to the natural environment,” said Walling. “Fearbased campaigns that suggest sinister activities do not respect the hard work of thousands of people who want the best for our environment.” Despite the allusions made by some campaigns, salmon on BC’s farms have a very high survival rate and no exotic disease has ever been detected. Farmed salmon are regularly

tested and monitored to ensure that fish health and sea lice management is held to the highest standard. “As coastal British Columbians, we want the best for our marine environment – and as salmon far mers we need to make sure that our fish are healthy and their home is clean. We have every motivation to make sure our business is done well,” said Walling. The BC Salmon Farmers Association remains involved to the Cohen Commis-

sion Inquiry into the decline of Sockeye Salmon, where participants and the public have been given a sense of the complexity of wild salmon survival and risks. The BCSFA believes that this in-depth, reasoned assessment of our wild salmon needs to be given the opportunity to suggest the best steps for our future. The BCSFA represents salmon far m companies and those who supply services and supplies to the industry.

of sockeye. But now to add insult to injury, instead of clearing Hoskyn Channel to give the wild salmon a fighting chance at survival, yet another fish farm has just been activated in these waters bringing the total to six farms along this waterway alone. So now we have the progeny of the catastrophic 2009 sockeye run mig rating out past sea lice and virus

laden fish farms to face a very uncertain future at sea. There’s the globally changing ocean conditions resulting in shifts in food species. There’s the threat of radiation and vast amounts of pollution and debris emanating from Japan. There’s the host of other natural threats that have always been there to keep the salmon in balance with their environment; they feed the orca, bears, eagles, sea lions and even the very

forests that maintain their spawning rivers. So what part of this equation is within our power to change? Now? Today before the out migration of salmon begins? We can move the salmon farms out of Hoskyn Channel! Over in Campbell River, the first commercial trials of closed containment salmon farms have just begun operations. Open net farms that allow the transmission of pathogens to the wild fish

will hopefully soon be a thing of the past. But that cannot happen fast enough to save these already critically weak wild salmon runs. Sure, in the short term a few jobs might be lost but in the long term we may aid the survival of the wild fish that are so important to the environmental and economic health of the BC coast. Jo h n D u n c a n , I know that right now you and the Conservatives are engaged in

your own struggle for political survival but the continued existence of wild salmon is far more important than you or me or any political party or business. The salmon were here before us and we need to make sure that they continue after we are gone. Do the right thing Mr. Duncan and do it now. Clear a path through Hoskyn Channel for the salmon… and the future. Mike Moore Cortes Island

WILLIAM CHARLES “BILLâ€? PETRIE October 7, 1926 - April 5, 2011 Bill Petrie passed away on April 5, 2011 at age 84. He is very sadly missed by his loving wife, Rita; they had been married for 62 years. Bill was born in Kamsak, Saskatchewan on October 7, 1926. His family moved from the farm when Bill was a young boy to the wild west coast of British Columbia. He grew up on Quadra Island and ďŹ rst became a commercial ďŹ sherman while still a teenager. Bill met Rita on Cortes Island and after marrying they moved to Campbell River in 1952. Although Bill worked in the logging industry and on tugboats up and down the coast, he was best known as a commercial ďŹ sherman for most of his life. After retiring from his seine boat Bill continued to ďŹ sh as a ‘sporty’ for recreation on his pleasure boats. Bill and Rita also spent many years traveling in their motor home, camping, and indulging in Bill’s favourite sport of visiting the casino. Bill is survived by his loving wife, Rita; two sisters Peggy Haga and Ethel Major; sister-in-law Peggy Anderson; brother-in-law Jim Munro (Georgia), and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Jack and Mary Petrie, and his brother John Blenkin (and family). Bill will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He will be remembered for his big smile, for his easy going and good nature, and as always ready to lend a helping hand. Private cremation arrangements. In lieu of owers, a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.

The event takes place Thursday at the Radiant Life Church (1251 Cypress Street, behind the fire hall) from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. Homemade soup, fruits, veggies and other snacks will all be provided free of charge as well as free Starbucks coffee. A free table of clothing and shoes will be set up and Carol Chapman will be on hand to give haircuts. Most importantly, 18 local care providers will be in attendance to help those living on the streets see what services are out there to provide help. “The point in having them there is to help reach out to the homeless in the community,” said Wilson. NIEFS (North Island Employment Foundations Society) will be in attendance to inform of any possible employment opportunities and programs, Robron Centre representatives from the continuing education and upgrading programs will be on hand, as will a First Nations alcohol and drug counsellor, Campbell River Family Services and more. The event is based on a project that was started in San Francisco in 2004 which provided medical treatment, dental care, eye exams and glasses, benefits information and government ID cards among other things. Vancouver, Burnaby and New Westminster launched their own projects based on the San Francisco model last year but Campbell River will be the first community on Vancouver Island to host such an event.

Island Voices give voice spring with line-up of favourites

y r n e l l t h The entertainer Rolf Harris once said “I don’t do requests very often…..only when I’m asked.” We l l , t h e I s l a n d Voices Chamber Choir has received a lot of requests - so many over recent years, that their April 29/30 concerts are made up of audience favourites. Conductor Jo-Anne Preston says, “Island Voices is more than just a choir. It is a family of dedicated musicians committed to singing excellent music excellently. Doing so, requires a lot of rehearsal time, and our friends and families have always shared our enthusiasm. This concert is our way of saying thank you for your support.” As with all Island Voices concerts, By Special Request represents a wide variety of music genres including classical, world, jazz, folk and popular. At the more classical end of the scale will be works by Mozart, Healy Willan, and movements from Larry Nickel’s Requiem for Peace. From there the program stretches out to Stan Rogers’ Northwest Passage, the spiritual Battle of Jericho, the Cuban Son de la Loma and a fascinating arrangement of Shakespeare’s Double, Double, Toil and Trouble. Marine Harvest falls short of Coastal Cup goal M

ALISTAIR TAYLOR/THE MIRROR

Campbell River Marine Harvest’s Zach Hamilton pounds his second goal of the game into the back of the Chilliwack net and cuts the deficit to 3-2. Hamilton had scored earlier on a penalty shot. A tying goal was scored to knot the score 3-3 at the end of regulation time. A shootout was virtually assured until Chilliwack was awarded a penalty shot in the last moments of the overtime period and secured a 4-3 victory.

Challenging field in Investors’ Group tournament The 16th Annual Investors’ Group Challenge once again proved to be a huge success for all teams involved. The soccer caliber this year was particularly high with AAA Provincial Champions Claremont and Runners up Argyle Pipers, along with Glenlyon Norfolk single “A’ Provincial Championships

and Campbell River Tyees who were AA provincial runners up last year. A cool breeze and blue sky greeted the 16 teams on the opening day and the soccer on show matched the beautiful weather. As tradition has it, the opening eight games determine which team enters Cup play and which team

goes to the Plate side. Carihi were intentionally drawn against AAA champions Claremont in an attempt to provide the young Tyees with the opportunity to go against the best team in the province. Claremont was a young team last year and the vast majority of the squad returned this season. Clare-

mont came out deserved 3-1 winners despite leaving five key starters at home. It was a good lesson for the home side as they were outmuscled in most departments. Despite this it was encouraging to see the younger players such as Jocelyn Cormier, Taylor Marsh, Karlyn Healy Continued on A31

arine Harvest bowed out of the 2011 Coastal Cup after an overtime defeat at Willow Point Park on Sunday. A strong crowd braved the elements to cheer the U18 boys on but alas with almost the last kick of the game Chilliwack Storm claimed the victory. The game proved to be an even affair and the local boys had more of the possession in the early stage of the game. Chilliwack looked slick in their counter attacks and Marine Harvest needed to be quick to avert any potential dangers. Despite the possession it was the visitors who were to get the opening ball. A long punt through the middle was allowed to bounce and miscommunication between the backline was punished by the chasing Chilliwack forward. The local boys responded well and slowly regained their hold on the game until another opportunistic goal was scored by the visitors. The half time score remained the same and the U18 boys knew they had a huge challenge in front of them. Within two minutes the ideal start to the half arrived. A rash challenge inside the 18 yard box produced a penalty which was calmly put away by Zach Hamilton. The momentum was now with the home team and pressure began to mount on the Chilliwack goal. A rare foray forward by the visitors produced their third goal of the game. This was an outstanding strike from 25 yards which flew into the top corner of the net. Marine Harvest showed great character and continued to work away. Once again Hamilton reduced the deficit. As the second half progressed, Chilliwack began to move the ball about the field with confidence and speed. It was, however, Marine Harvest that scored the tying goal moments before the end of regulation time when Shane Berry hammered the ball home from inside the six yard box. Campbell River was down to nine men after being handed two red cards in the match. But the two over time periods saw end to end play as both teams tired and left spaces. As the minutes ticked away it seemed all but a certainty that the teams were go to a shoot out. Chilliwack had other ideas as following a brief spell of pressure they were able to draw a penalty which they finished to secure a dramatic winner. “Many thanks to all the soccer folks that came out to cheer the boys on. The support was much appreciated,” said Marine Harvest coach John Jepson.

CITY OF CR PUBLIC NOTICE

ALISTAIR TAYLOR/THE MIRROR

Carihi forward Ayla Akehurst splits Thomas Aquinas defenders during Investors Tournament action at Willow Point Park Friday.

Girls soccer: Tyees lost to Glenlyon in plate final Continued from A30 and “Macca” adjust well to the challenge. The Tyees made an encouraging start but found themselves two goals down shortly into the second half before “Razza” pulled one back. Any hopes of a revival were dealt a blow when Claremont increased their lead after 59 minutes. The second game of the day for the Tyees saw them face Fraser Va l l e y C h r i s t i a n School. The opponents on this occasion were less experienced than Claremont and the Tyees were able to beat them 3-0 in comfortable fashion. The next morning saw the Carihi girls meet Thomas Aquinas who, like Carihi found themselves in the Plate side due to the quality of their first round opponents. Thomas Aquinas have a fine soccer history and it was clear at the start of the game both teams

very much wanted a win to ensure a place in the Plate Final. The game proved to be an excellent one for the Tyees. They dominated both in the air and on the ground and moved the ball about in fine fashion. It seemed many of the lessons of the previous day had been taken on board. Talise Lindenbach had her best game in a Carihi shirt and was both brave and tenacious in all her challenges. Jamie Tillapaugh was her usual “Tank like” self in the middle and Morgan Breeze bravely took on her new responsibilities in central midfield. On the rare occasion Thomas Aquinas did breach the Tyee defence keeper Haley Craddock positioning was exemplary. Despite their dominant performance the score remained 0-0 at the half. Ten minutes into

the second half Claire Pomeroy hit a superb drive into the top corner of the Aquinas net. The Plate Final saw G l e n l yo n N o r f o l k School, Victoria and single A provincial champions, take on the Tyees in the fourth game in two days for both sides. The first half belonged to the visitors as they moved the ball about smoothly and in confident fashion. Fortunately their finishing was not as smooth as their approach play and the Tyees remained in the game as the half time whistle blew with the score still at 0-0.

The second half saw a stronger Tyee effort. Full backs Jenna Manners and Kelly Wunderlich did a fine job of getting forward and supporting the play. Upfront Ayla Akehurst was a constant threat and Razza was always dangerous on the breakaway. Despite controlling much of the half the Tyees could not get the break through and the game ended in a 0-0 stale mate. The resulting shootout saw Glenlyon put on a “Penalty Kick Clinic” as they smashed every penalty into the corner of the net leaving Craddock helpless.
