Harper greeted with love, support, protests Man stabbed 12 times; listed in stable condition

KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Prime Minister Stephen Harper was in Campbell River Saturday to drum up support for the Conservatives and stop the recent momentum of the NDP. Harper spoke for about half an hour to roughly 500 Conservative members and supporters at the Quinsam Centre in an effort to sway voters. “We couldn’t get the opposition parties to deal with the highest priorities of Canadians so we’re forced to come to you to get a mandate to complete our economic recovery,” said Harper. “Choose stability by voting for a strong, stable, majority Conservative government.” But not everyone was there to support the prime minister. Outside, a group of about 12 demonstrators lined the road to the Quinsam Centre, holding signs protesting the halibut allocation and the federal government’s decision to replace the Coast Guard cutter Point Race with a smaller vessel, two issues which were not addressed by Harper during his speech. And if the polls are any indication, Harper still has work to do if he wants a majority government. A recent Ekos Politics poll has the Conservatives at 33.7 per cent of the vote with the NDP gaining at 28 per cent, ahead of the Liberals who sit at 23.7 per cent. If those results were to hold, the Conservatives would have 131 seats in parliament, the NDP would have 100 and the Liberals would hold 62. The Vancouver Island North riding has historically been a

Harper also said the NDP have said no to Employment Insurance premiums to create new jobs and no to initiatives targeted at improving health care, all things Harper said the Conservatives have said yes to, without raising taxes. A 19-year-old man survived a dozen stab wounds Easter Sunday following a fight at an outdoor birthday party. According to Campbell River RCMP, the victim was at a party with friends at a campsite beside Echo Lake, located west of the city on the Gold River Highway. In the early morning hours Sunday, the victim got into a confrontation with another man which led to a fight, and he was stabbed 12 times in the torso. The victim’s friends drove him to Campbell River hospital where he was later airlifted to Victoria and underwent surgery. He is presently in stable condition at Victoria General Hospital. Police were called to Campbell River hospital at 3:25 a.m. Their investigation led them to a home located in the 4700 block of Argonaut Road where they discovered a 40-plant marijuana grow operation on the property. They also seized other drugs, firearms and clothing. One man was arrested. Bradley James Perkins, 23, is charged with aggravated assault and firearms offences. He was held in custody and was expected to appear in provincial court on Tuesday. Details were not available at press time.

the Paramount Music Hall (for merly the Voodoo Lounge) in the early morning hours Friday. His death is being treated as suspicious and members of the Campbell River RCMP Major Crimes Unit

are awaiting autopsy results as their investigation continues. No other details were released. Britnell, a man in his mid-20s, had recently moved from Vancouver to Campbell River and was working in construction.

Resident chases thief Police are looking for a teenager who tried to break into a home early Friday morning. According to RCMP, the owner heard a noise around 12:35 a.m. and discovered the young man trying to pry the screen off a

bedroom window. The suspect then fled from the residence located in the 100 block of Thulin St. The suspect is described as about 16 years old, medium height, slim build and was wearing a black hoodie.

In a similar incident in the early mor ning hours of April 1, a man chased away a thief who attempted to climb through his kitchen window in the 500 block of Rockland Rd. So far there have been no arrests. KRISTEN DOUGLAS/THE MIRROR

made that people will benefit from for years thanks to the hard work of your Member of Parliament (Duncan).” Harper said thanks to initiatives such as the infrastr ucture stimulus plan, Canada emerged from the

global recession faster and stronger than most other countries. “We’re the leader other countries aspire to be like in the global economic recovery,” said Harper. “To keep it that way, it matters who leads our country.”

The guys did a lot of work and we want to thank the Campbell River Fire Department for helping us out,” said Oyster River Fire Chief Niels Holbek. He said the home was gutted by the blaze. According to Holbek, veteran fire investigator Rob Owens believes the cause of the fire was electrical and started in an addition, and then spread to the rest of the house.

Spring is here. Lend your green thumb to help plant the trailside around the new Willows Creek bridge on the Jubilee Parkway Connector Trail. The Jubilee Connector section of the Greenways Loop is nearing completion. The 2.5 km Jubilee Connector will provide the missing link for a 25 km trail network around Campbell River named the Greenways Loop. Join Willow Creek Stewards on Saturday to plant this area with native plants. This planting will help to rehabilitate the riparian area of Willow Creek as well as increase the biodiversity of the area along the section of trail. This is a great opportunity to come and see this new trail. Volunteers will meet at 10 a.m. at the Willow Creek Bridge off of Jubilee Parkway. Be prepared for all types of weather and tools will be provided to volunteers. Questions? Call Greenways Land Trust at 287-3785 or e-mail greenways@ greenwaystrust.ca

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Matt Hill and Stephanie Tait shared their story of running around North America in one year with Campbell Riverites during an Earth Week celebration April 20. Hill and Tait, both from Vancouver, took on an excursion that spanned 10 provinces, 25 states and 17,703 kilometres, to inspire people to make changes in their everyday life to help save the planet. Their “Run for One Planet” initiative, which began May 4, 2008 in Vancouver and ended May 8, 2009 in the same city, took the pair east across Canada, and around the perimeter of the United States, down through New York to the Florida coast, across the southern states and back up along the west coast to Victoria. Along the way, they spoke at different schools to spread their message and at any other events where people were willing to listen. “It’s an uphill battle but I really believe we can find a solution if everybody looks inside themselves to find what fuels their fire to make a difference,” Hill told a half-full Tidemark Theatre. The evening featured Hill and Tait’s presentation but also included a video presentation of the winning entries in school district 72’s Going for Green contest, which asked students to come up with ways to help

the environment, or to showcase what they are already doing in an effort to “go green.” D r e w Wi l l i a m s , the school district’s teacher Pro-D co-ordinator, said the district received more than 100 entries and several winners were selected from the elementary, middle and high school categories. Most videos focused on their school’s recycling and composting programs but some had the audience chuckling. In one entry, the Federal Energy Investigators, two girls were arrested at school for not turning off the lights when they left the classroom and for having the heat turned up too high. Another, the Recycling Rap, featured all the items at Southgate that can be recycled instead of thrown away. Penfield Elementary’s video was done in a question and answer format, with the students speaking out

bottles,” says Hill. “We learned that the way to go is through kids and schools, schools, schools.” Hill and Tait, who each ran the equivalent of one marathon every day of their run (42 km), say they reached 35,000 kids on their tour. Tait says halfway across Canada, in Winnipeg, it became obvious why they were doing the run. “We were out there to inspire simple steps like choosing to say

on all the things they have done to fix up the Penfield Trail, including clearing branches and removing invasive plants like Scottish broom. The videos all mirrored Hill and Tait’s message that the way to reducing our ecological footprint and saving the planet from pollution is through kids. “We want to change people’s minds on throwing cer tain things out, like plastic

no to plastic bags at the grocery store and instead using paper bags, to start a compost unit, to bring your own mug when you go out for coffee or tea,” says Tait. “And we found that message was really resonating with the kids.” Despite the challenges the pair faced, such as having to run extra kilometres to make up for scheduling mishaps – twice, minor injuries and ripped up feet, and narrowly missing an oncoming tornado near Beaufort County, South Carolina, the couple say it was worth it. “ We f a c e d ch a l lenges everyday,” says Hill. “We ran into two landslides in the Rockies and our RV would sometimes decide to run, sometimes not and she broke down a couple of times on us. It tested our resolve but it brought us back to the core of why we’re doing this, to make a difference and inspire the people we talked to that they can make a difference.”

Candidates’ positions on aquaculture The final week of the federal election campaign is underway and the Mirror polled the candidates for vancouver Island North riding for their opinion on aquaculture. Do you support aquaculture? Why or why not? Jason Dr aper – Independent Party of Canada: Of course I support aquaculture, but that in no way means that I would look at the indus-

try in a static manner. My understanding is that the industry is working hard to make s u re i t is sustainable, with as little footprint on the environment as possible. However, I also have some information that things are not going as well as they could, concerning the environment. For that reason, I would encourage those involved to bring to the table issues that are stopping them from better environmental management. First and foremost, of course, would be the economy, which forces all industry to cut and slash wherever pos-

sible in order not just to make a profit, but in many cases just to pay the bills. For this reason, I am encouraging the people of Vancouver Island North to take a close look at MPE (Mathematical Perfected Economy), which upon implementation, would instantly liquidate the industry by as much as 12 times simply by eliminating compound interest, removing the obfuscation of the currency, issuing loans equal to the capital improvements they are for, and thus further improving the economy by totally eliminating inflation and deflation. John Duncan – Conservative Party of Canada: In terms of aquacul-

ture, I support both traditional wild fisheries and a sustainable aquaculture industry, both of which are important to our coastal communities. Aquaculture plays an important role in creating and supporting jobs in Vancouver Island North. A re-elected Conservative government will continue to suppor t aquaculture that is strictly regulated and operating transparently. Our Conservative government has invested over $70 million to improve environmental monitoring and science. As of December 2010, regulatory oversight of the aquaculture sector was transferred to the federal government. There are strong rules that must be enforced fairly. It is very early to judge results of these new regulations or enforcement. Under the Fisheries Act, federal regulations will govern certain activities re garding the cultivation of fish in British Columbia. The

It will be important for the sustainability of the aquaculture industry that they follow the rules and find ways to innovate in order to maintain a social license to operate. Mike Holland – Liberal Party of Canada: I do support the aquaculture industry. It is already an important source of jobs in our community, particularly in regions where jobs are desperately needed. While we need and value t h e s e jobs, we m u s t a l s o ensure we safeguard our wild fishery, which also supports many industries and jobs from the commercial fishery to recreational fishing and tourism. We need to take a science-based approach that objectively examines the impact of farming on the wild fishery, and be prepared to follow where the science takes us. Ronna-Rae Leonard – New Democratic Party: Yes! Aquaculture provides important jobs in our community. There’s a strong future in aquaculture and we have unique conditions here to make it thrive and create jobs. F o r salmon aqualculture, N e w Democ r a t s are committed to ensuring long-term sustainable jobs by transitioning to closed containment systems. This protects both jobs and wild salmon. I am also deeply committed to shellfish aquaculture. That’’s one reason why I am calling for a stronger environmental assessment of the proposed Continued on A6

coal mine in Comox Valley, which could put hundreds of jobs in the shellfish industry at risk. New Democrats will work with industry, workers, First Nations and municipalities to ensure that Vancouver Island North enjoys a strong, vibrant and sustainable aquaculture industry. Sue Moen – Green Party: I support the workers in aquaculture and will demonstrate that by working to provide any necessary income and retraining supports while requiring the industry to make the transition to land-based operations. The Precautionary Principle, which Canada signed onto, demands that we remove any possible threats to our wild salmon and the marine ecosystems. More than 50,000 British Columbian jobs depend on a healthy ocean environment. The Green Party realizes that moving to land will take time, however, that move must begin immediately and we think pens should be fallowed on migratory routes while the industry transitions. A fully-funded Fisheries and Oceans Canada, whose mandate includes marine protection, monitoring and enforcement, and research and precludes promotion, will ensure industry is free to pursue innovative, sustainable and profitable operations while public confidence in the Ministry is restored. Willow Point School students go green KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

W

illow Point Elementary School students hoped their environmentally friendly practices would encourage others to think about the environment – in the process, they won $1,500. Clea Adair’s Grade 1/2 split class starred in and developed a video showcasing their school’s ecoactions and submitted it to the BC Green Games, Science World’s province-wide contest that rewards students for their contributions to the environment. Willow Point’s video was selected, out of 139 entries, by a panel of environmental experts as one of 10 elementary school winners. It also won the $500 elementary viewer’s choice award, on top of the big $1,000 prize. The video featured all the projects the students have been working on this year. The school composts every day and students from Adair’s class go from classroom to classroom collecting compostable items that are turned into dirt for the chickens on Adair’s farm. The students have

even paid a visit to their teacher’s farm to watch the chickens feed off their composting efforts. “I’ve been taking the school’s compost, which is about 60 litres a week, and putting it in the chicken field for them to eat,” says Adair. “It now makes up half the food bill for the chickens.” Adair said one morning, she used the eggs her chickens laid to make pancakes for the class. Being able to physically see the process has helped the students in her class learn the chicken cycle, which is explained by the students in their video. “We’re taking care of the earth and trying to reduce our ecological footprint,” says Adair, who even has the class turn off the lights whenever possible to save electricity. And going green has paid off. “The school’s janitor told me we’ve decreased our garbage output by half through the school’s recycling and composting programs,” says Adair. The entire school recycles all paper, plastic, metal, milk cartons and juice boxes. Adair’s class even uses recyclables

BIG ROCK BOAT RAMP

OPEN FOR USE

The City of Campbell River is working to keep the Big Rock boat ramp clear in 2011, and maintenance at Ken Forde boat ramp will be temporarily postponed, pending the findings of a soon-to-be completed foreshore assessment report. The marine foreshore habitat assessment report is expected to be presented to Council in June. This assessment will help us protect Campbell River’s Cityowned marine foreshore, which is being lost to erosion. The assessment will prioritize foreshore remediation sites and include preliminary restoration guidelines that use marine materials, to ensure City restoration action is in compliance with the Federal Fisheries Act. The report will also include a maintenance strategy for Big Rock and Ken Forde boat ramps. In 2011, the City will re-design Big Rock boat ramp site. The design process will involve significant public consultation, particularly with the boating community. This work will be complete in 2011, and with Council approval, construction of the new design will occur in 2012. Questions or feedback? Please contact: Ross Milnthorp, General Manager of Parks, Recreation & Culture 250-286-5797 or via email to ross.milnthorp@campbellriver.ca. 301 St. Ann’s Road Campbell River BC. for their art projects. “We use paper from other classes if it’s only been used on one-side,” says Adair. “If the paper’s not recycled, we don’t do art.” When the students found out stuffed animals cannot be recycled, they started a teddy bear exchange. The kids brought their old stuffies to school

to trade with a friend to promote one of the three R’s – reuse. Adair even took all the teddies home to her farm and stuck them in a freezer for a week to ensure no germs were spread. The students say the whole point of entering the contest was to show everyone how green their school is and to inspire other

schools to take up the cause. Trent Parras and Valery Williams, both Grade 2 students at Willow Point school, are just two of a class full of environmentalists that won a contest sponsored by Science World for saving the earth, through a variety of ways, such as composting. “We are excited to partner with the BC SPCA for the Annual Open House series,” says Brian Howard, General Manager for Hill’s Canada. “Hill’s Shelter Nutrition Partnership with the BC SPCA is a natural extension of our mission: To help enrich and lengthen the spec i a l re l at i o n s h i p s between people and their pets.” Chortyk says the BC SPCA is extremely grateful to Hill’s for its continuing support. “Hill’s is a champion of homeless animals, not only through their sponsorship of our Open House series, but in their ongoing support of the dogs and cats in our care,” said Chortyk. Hill’s donates free food for all dogs, cats, puppies and kittens in BC SPCA branches across the province to ensure that the animals receive a high quality and consistent pet food. The pro g ram promotes the health of shelter

animals, making them more adoptable and enables animals to be transferred between shelters without suffering any ill effects from changing pet food. Hill’s also gives a free 3.5-5 lb. bag of Science Diet® to new pet guardians with every BC SPCA cat or dog adoption along with The Guide for Lifelong Health. “With the free bag of Science Diet we give with every adoption, our hope is that new pet guardians will continue the feeding regimen the BC SPCA has started, for a lifetime of health and happiness for their pet,” says Howard. The BC SPCA adopts more than 18,000 animals each year through its 37 branches. All animals adopted from the BC SPCA are vetchecked, vaccinated and altered (spayed or neutered), and assessed for temperament. For more information about the Open House series, visit spca.bc.ca.

Our View

We interrupt reality for a royal diversion On Friday, an estimated two billion people around the world will be glued to their televisions at all hours of the day and night to watch the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. They’ll also be able to view the We say: There’s pomp and ceremony on an official royal YouTube channel, or a royal no escaping the wedding app on their iPhone, hype, so don’t try or follow it on a live blog with integrated Twitter feed. to There’s no escaping the hype. According to the technology firm Greenlight, the royal wedding is being mentioned 9,000 times a day online, or about once every 10 seconds.

There are six times more people excited about the wedding than those that couldn’t care less. No detail is too minute or mundane for scrutiny, from speculation on Middleton’s dress and who’s designing it, to the guest list, the gifts, the appetizers, the menu. The cynics, meanwhile, roll their eyes. They dismiss the royal family as irrelevant; they don’t make decisions, they don’t create policy. They scorn their lavish lifestyles of privilege as a needless burden on taxpayers struggling to pay the rent and buy groceries in recessionary times. They shake their heads at the expense and attention paid to a royal wedding as an affront when

people are dying in wars, struggling to rebuild their lives after disasters, dealing with the daily challenges of disease, starvation and poverty. But it’s those very realities that pique our interest and curiosity about the royals, their wealth, their lifestyles, their foibles. It’s human nature to seek escape from all the challenges of just getting through the day. For most, the royal wedding is no more than that, a diversion. So sit back and enjoy. Good point: Fatalities April 28 is the National Day of Mourning for Workers Killed and Injured on the Job. Flags are flown at half mast and memorials are held in many locations across Canada. The Campbell River, Courtenay and District Labour Council asks that all workers, both union and nonunion, take a moment today to remember the 1000 Canadian workers who die every year and the countless others who are injured or become ill as a result of unsafe workplaces. The number of people killed at work each year in Canada has risen for the past 15 years. This is in contrast to almost every other first-world country where the incidence of workplace fatalities is declining. In 2007, according to the latest report from the Association of Workers’ Compensation Boards of Canada, 1,055 people lost their lives at work. That’s four people every work day. Shockingly, in 2008 there were 42 WorkSafeBC claims for child workers under the age of 15. Our Labour Council, and the labour movement as a whole, continues to oppose child labour. We are horrified that children are sustaining serious workplace accidents and we demand that the B.C. government change the laws that allow this to continue. The number and rate of workplace fatalities in Canada, even from accidents, is unacceptably high. We have failed to make progress in reducing the number and rate of workplace deaths. The real translation of El Nina means ‘Cold Witch’

Paul Rudan No, really

I really should have been raking. Craning my eye level just above the bonfire, I calculated another 30,000 or so Douglas fir cones amidst the fallen woody debris awaiting my trusty blue rake. But I really don’t care for raking and any distraction is a welcome one. In this case, a friend and I had plunked our backsides into lawn chairs and were happily nursing cold beers as the sunshine warmed our faces along with the fire. Felt good to do nothing, especially after a busy two days – well, a dayand-a-half – of seemingly endless yard work. It felt even better to feel the sun’s warmth, something that has been sorely lacking since, say, last Sep-

tember? Ah yes, there’s the note in the Farmer’s Almanac: Sept. 13, 2010: Last actual day you will feel warm again outdoors until late April 2011. I think El Nina is really a Spanish name for “Cold Witch.” (Feel free to replace the W with a B if you like.) Perhaps I’m a tad harsh. After all, it’s not like I had to clear the driveway of a metre of snow, which isn’t all that uncommon during our socalled “mild” winters. I can never forget my first winter here back in 1990-’91. “Oh, your new here? Well, it NEVER snows!” more than one liar told me. I believe it was late January or early February, when more than a metre of snow dumped on us and then

the mercury dipped to somewhere below minus-10 Celsius. For nearly two weeks, the motorists faced life or death situations at every left turn as they attempted to see around the frozen piles of snow, idiotically left in the middle of the roads. City workers have since improved their snow removal techniques and, fortunately, we’ve never had another winter as brutal as that one since. This one was a little different. Cooler than usual, for longer, and seemingly more rain. I have trouble understanding how it could rain EVEN MORE here in the winter, but it has. That will ultimately translate into more cones on the firs which inevitably will lead to more raking. But that

will be for another day and right now the only thing I’m looking forward too is another brewski. Life is good here, very good, and I’m grateful to have found this corner of paradise...even with all the rain. A few weeks back, someone complained, “It’s too wet! It couldn’t be worse!” I thought for a second and replied, “You’re right. It can’t be worse than the massive flooding in Australia, the earthquake in New Zealand, or the catastrophic earthquake in Japan, followed by a killer tsunami and nuclear reactor disaster…” The whining immediately ceased as we both smiled; that knowing smile of two people who know just how lucky we are to be just where we are.

Time to put children first During this election campaign and prior to it, the current Government of Canada claims it spends $5.6 B annually on early lear ning and child care. But most of that goes directly to parents as a Universal Child Care Benefit. This taxable family allowance benefit pays for, on average, about three days of child care per month and does nothing to create much needed quality child care spaces across Canada. As such, early learning and child care continues to be a public issue affecting millions of Canadian children and their families, yet our current public discourse on a national

level fails to address the importance of children’s safety, their positive development or the needs of real Canadian families. The Government of Canada needs to take advantage of the vast early learning research we have and apply it to a pan-Canadian system that offers quality early learning and child care to all Canadian families who require it. It would be refreshing to see future public policy based on the development of high quality child care spaces and all that entails rather than a political ideology that does not reflect the real needs of children and families. We live in a society

that has national standards for light bulbs but none for child care. We pay front page attention to the issues of puppy mills but give only cursory glances to the care and well-being of children while their parents are contributing to Canada’s economy. This is simply wrong. The time has come to put children first by supporting families and investing where early learning research and good practice tell us will reap the most success: quality early lear ning and child care. New B.C. leaders to face off The B.C. legislature reconvenes on Wednesday for a month-long session that is expected to feature the debut of both NDP leader Adrian Dix and Premier Christy Clark. Clark must first win a seat in a May 11 by-election in Vancouver-Point Grey, to fill the vacancy left by former premier Gordon Campbell. If she defeats NDP candidate David Eby, she would be able to take her seat on the B.C. Liberal front bench a few days before the spring session ends on June 2. Clark has hinted at new family-friendly tax measures that could be tabled in the spring session. One of those could be a promised reduction in the rate of the harmonized sales tax, the fate of which will be decided in a mail-in referendum set for June and July. Finance Minister Keven Falcon has launched a pre-referendum program that includes $500,000 to be split between pro-HST and anti-HST representatives, a household mail-out including arguments from both sides, and a series of public forums held at colleges and universities around B.C. The government will also run an advertising campaign urging voters to keep the HST, thus avoiding costs in the billions to undo it and retaining sales tax rebates directed to low-income households.

Day of mourning: Remember those killed in the workplace Continued from A12 across Canada, the monitoring of labour and safety standards has been drastically cut back, or even replaced by “voluntary” industry compliance. It’s time for the provinces and territories to

appoint special prosecutors to lay charges a g ainst employers when their actions cause death or serious injury. More inspectors must be hired to ensure employers comply with the law. It’s also time

for all governments to enact new regulations that deal with known dangers in today’s workplaces, including workplace violence, exposure to toxins and carcinogens, repetitive stress injuries and injuries caused by poor

ergonomics, workplace harassment and stress. Any workplace death or injury is preventable. On April 28, please join us in remembering those who went to work and never came home. And please join us in

demanding changes to laws and regulations that continue to put the safety of workers of all ages at risk. Anne Davis President C a m p b e l l R ive r Courtenay and District Labour Council

Even if movies based on video games aren’t your cup of tea, the recent Disney production Tron: Legacy is notable as a measure of the sophistication of the B.C. motion picture industry. A showcase of the latest computer-generated 3D effects, including a rendering of actor Jeff Bridges as he looked in the original version 30 years ago Tron: Legacy was nominated for an Oscar and won several other awards for technical achievement. The sleek, lighted suits worn by characters were custommade in the United States at a cost of $22 million, then brought to Vancouver for filming. Due to the vagaries of the old provincial sales tax, Disney had to pay about $1.5 million in PST because they were used here. A friend in the business tells me this was more of a deterrent to movie production in B.C. than the current

Quarterly HST rebate cheques went out last week to more than a million B.C. residents at the lowest end of the income scale. Ask those people if they’d like to lose that benefit, a real example of the kind of income equalizing measure that Dix calls his top priority. Ask a laid-off mill employee if he’d like to go back to work, and pay HST on movies and a dinner out. ■ Further to last week’s column about Dix’s plan to raise corporate tax rates, I now regret referring to his program as “Marxism Lite.” I fell for his strident rhetoric about taxing big corporations. His proposal amounts to raising the tax on corporate net income in excess of $500,000 by a modest two per cent. Doane to paint the Tidemark emerald Eat In2X2.5 or

“There’s no place like home” sings Juno Award winning singer-songwriter Melanie Doane on Ruby Slippers, the opening track from her new album The Emerald City, just released last month. While a Wizard of Oz theme is apparent, Doane isn’t channelling her inner Dorothy on this fresh set of pop-rock gems. “The Emerald City is an image we all know,” says Doane. “It means different things to different people, but ultimately it’s the only image I know of that embodies disenchantment and hope at the same time. It’s the shattering of something you believe in, but somehow optimism remains. That’s where I’m coming from with these songs.” Doane is also coming from back east just to perform for Campbell River at the Tidemark Theatre on Friday at 7:30. “The Tidemark and 99.7 The River are thrilled to be able to bring her to town,” says the Tidemark’s Gord Jaques. “She has gone through a lot of changes recently and her new album is a reflection of those. Melanie is one of those artists that we west coasters hear all the time; we just don’t recognize the name.” The product of a musical family, Halifax-born Doane has spent a large portion of the last 15 years on the road supporting her numerous solo albums. While her debut album Shakespearean Fish

received critical praise and garnered a loyal following, the release of Adam’s Rib in 1998 brought Doane’s music to a mainstream audience, brilliantly showcasing Doane’s flair as both an instrumentalist and songwriter, featuring punchyrelevant lyrics laced with strong musical wit. What followed the album’s release

is nothing short of extraordinary: multiple top 40 singles, a Juno Award for Best New Artist, a Canadian Radio Award for Most Charted Rock Artist, over 200 shows in Canada and the U.S. with the likes of Jann Arden, Sarah McLachlan’s Lilith Fair, and Great Big Sea, and a Gold record award. Doane has pursued her career independent of the label system. In 2001, she recorded and released the fan cherished Melvin Live, an album showcasing her energetic and diverse live show. Her third studio album You Are What You Love followed in 2003, preceded by the lead single Still Desire You, which spanned multiple formats and eventually went Top 5. A Thousand Nights followed in 2008, preceded by the albums lead single Songbird with Blue Rodeo’s Jim Cuddy which reached Top 5 on the iTunes Country singles chart. The album was inspired by Doane’s experiences with motherhood and featuring an assortment of original tunes and classic covers rearranged as lullabies. That album generated prominent song placements in hit shows like CBC’s Being Erica

and CBS’s Flashpoint, and celebrated Melanie’s softer side musically and lyrically. In contrast, The Emerald City feels like a return to form, recalling the edgier style of her breakthrough Gold-selling record Adam’s Rib while tactfully showcasing Doane’s multifaceted skills as a vocalist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist (she plays guitar, violin, piano, ukulele, mandolin, and bass). Get your tickets now for Melanie Doane, April 29, 7:30 p.m. at the Tidemark Theatre. MAIER, Keitha Florence

January 19, 1918 - April 18, 2011 With love and thankfulness for her many years with us, we announce that Keitha passed away peacefully at the age of 93. Predeceased by Frederick, her husband of 41 years, Keitha is survived by her 5 loving children - Lynne (Randy), Frederick (Gail), Robin (Nancie), Shelley (John), and Aaron (Gale-Ann) plus 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Born and raised on a farm in Maidstone, Saskatchewan Keitha married Fred and settled in Vancouver where they lived for 13 years before relocating to Campbell River in 1953. In addition to raising their 5 children, Keitha often worked alongside Fred on their fishing troller the “Keitha M.” on the West Coast. Later, she worked in Campbell River as an accountant, administrative assistant, private piano and violin teacher, and a substitute school teacher, as well as being actively involved in music groups, community organizations, and the United Church. Caring for her family and instilling an appreciation of music, nature, and educational pursuits in her children and grandchildren was first and foremost; her other passions included playing the violin (performing at community events, functions and dances up and down Vancouver Island), tending her beautiful garden, and volunteering for many local causes. A woman with strong character, a bright mind, many talents, an array of accomplishments and a twinkle-in-her-eye, Keitha’s spirit will live on within us always. The family will hold a celebration of her life at a future date.

OPINION

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 27, 2011 | CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR |

HEROES – The following who donated generously to the Rock Climb-a-thon on Thursday, April 7 for the Canadian Red Cross Japan Relief Fund by the Japanese and Nikkei Community. Thank you to Ian and his patrons at the On the Rocks Climbing Gym, to Barb and Mike Preston, their students, and their co-workers, to our relatives and neighbours. Due to your generosity, we were able to raise nearly $750 with more to come. Thank you very much. – Tak and Mike HEROES – The Japanese and Nikkei Community of Campbell River, Comox Valley, and Area would like to thank the general public who came to buy or donate money at our charity garage sale for Japan relief on April 16. We would especially like to thank the following people who donated so much great stuff. Without their generosity, we could not have made over a thousand dollars. Thanks to Yvonne Buxton, Lorene Hickmott, Case Kramer, Jan Lim, Tom Normand, Jean

Mitzi Ogasawara, Miyuki Matsuzawa, Japanese and Nikkei Community of Campbell River, Comox Valley, and Area.

Heroes & Zeros

and BJ Pakulak, Coco Pallan, Bev Ready, Ellen Robertson, Catherine Smith and Mitar Soe. Many members of our Japanese and Nikkei Community donated goods as well. We appreciate the Campbell River Mirror and the Campbell River CourierIslander for running an article about this event. All the proceeds have been sent to the Canadian Red Cross Japan Earthquake/ Asia Pacific Tsunami Response. Our last fundraising event, a Charity Concert by local young musicians and performers, will be held on Saturday, May 7 at 2 p.m. at the Baptist Church on Dogwood St. Hope to see you there. –

SAFETY RECALL NOTICE Tsunami Legacy 3500 Product

NAME OF RECALLED PRODUCT: Tsunami Legacy 3500 3.5 HDD Enclosure (“Tsunami Legacy 3500 Product”), which comes with a Transformer/AC Adapter Model: RD0714-12 (“Transformer”). REASON FOR RECALL: The Safety Authority of British Columbia has notified London Drugs that the Tsunami Legacy 3500 Product contains a Transformer which does not bear the certification symbol required pursuant to applicable Canadian laws and regulations. While the Transformer does contain a TUV certification symbol, it was not issued by the certification body required by Canadian regulatory authorities. INCIDENTS: London Drugs is unaware of any consumer incidents or injury related to this noncompliance issue. CANADIAN RETAILER: Sold at all London Drugs retail stores within British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. DISTRIBUTION PERIOD: January, 2010 through to April, 2011. REMEDY: Customers should return the Tsunami Legacy 3500 Product, with Transformer, to any London Drugs retail store in return for a full refund. When returning the Tsunami Legacy 3500 Product, customers must return the Transformer in order to get a refund.

ZEROS – The moronic cyclists that seem to infest our town. While coming through a green light at the intersection of Cedar St. and 11th Ave, you brazenly crossed in front of me in the perpendicular direction, clearly ignoring the red light. You didn’t even look in my direction. If I had been going any faster than 25 km/hr, you would have become road pizza. Thankfully, I am a very observant and defensive driver or you would not be reading this now. For

all of you out there that ride bicycles, electric scooters, or even horses as far as I’m concerned, the rules of the road are: you are either a vehicle or pedestrian…stop being both. To all of the cyclists out there that obey the law and stop for red lights and do not abuse crosswalks as a matter of convenience...Thank you. – MSP shouldn’t pay for stupidity HEROES – The Campbell River Women’s Centre wants to extend floral tributes to several of the outstanding volunteers that worked so hard to make our 4th Annual Art Show and Gala such a success: a

garland of perfect pink roses to the extraordinary culinary talents of Kathy Davies; sheaths of red beauty roses to Diane Desmarais and Francis Lake, divas of the silent auction table and a basket of delicate wild roses to Ellen Latta, in appreciation of her artistic talents and endless energy. In addition, we’d like to offer up roses of all hues to Chris and Brooke, of Impressions, for their help and support and to Cat Kalyniuk, Michael Wilson and The Shimmy Sisters Dance Troupe for lending their creative gifts to the opening night of our show. – Georgette Whitehead, Vancouver

Ravens get the sweep The Campbell River Minor Lacrosse Subway PeeWee B Ravens had a very successful and quite interesting series of games on the weekend. The team swe pt a double-header against the VictoriaEsquimalt Eagles last Saturday. The Ravens beat the Eagles in the first game and won the second game by forfeit due to some very questionable decisions by non-players. The Ravens beat the Eagles by a score of “several-to-two” in the first game while only taking two penalties. Neither team had a player injured during the game; no bodychecks required an “Are you okay?” visit from a coach. Some Victoria parents must have put their Easter dinner in the oven before they left for Campbell River since they went home without sticking around to play the second game of the double-header. About an hour after the end of the first game, the Eagles said they would forfeit the second game as they were short of players. Ravens Coach Todd

Fair offered to loan the Eagles a couple of Ravens and play an inter-squad scrimmage. This turned out to be a more equal game, especially in the second period when the teams made the decision to swap goalies, too. O n S u n d ay, t h e Ravens were able to get right back into action in Nanaimo against Oceanside. Raven Thomas Dunn made several key saves in goal to keep the score close while his teammates got themselves squared away and re-focused. Ravens team captain Nolan Fair led the way on the scoreboard and with his play in traffic. The Ravens continued to work hard at both ends to the final whistle and earned a 10-2 victory and a 3-1 record on the season. The Subway PeeWee B Ravens next games are at home Sat., April 30 at 9:30 a.m. against Oceanside and Sun., May 1 at noon against Alberni Valley. Come on out to Rod Brind’Amour Arena to watch the fastest game on two feet!

Riders in the Pro GP and Intermediate MX1 class got some good air in their first race of the season. The 2011 motocross season kicked off last weekend, with Campbell River hosting the first two rounds of the Vancouver Island Spring Series. Riders ages four and up, from across the Island, took part in the event which featured top riders including Campbell River’s Lindsey McLean who took home first overall in the Fall Series last year.

Junior lacrosse kicks off next week The Ravens are sure to come out with energy, anticipation and excitement for the season opener against Westshore on Sun,, May 1st, 3:30 p.m. at Rod Brind’ Amour Arena. There’s no doubt the Bears and

Ravens will provide a fast paced, action packed game to start the regular season. The 2011 Ravens are a young team, a mix of talented rookies from last year’s midget A2 team along with experienced

players of one to three years at the junior level. Veteran players this year will be Chris Vaux playing transition and Connor McLeod on defence, and Hayden Smith and Eddy Lawson are back to join the Ravens after

playing the last two seasons in Nanaimo. The 2011 roster also includes brothers Matt and Chris Lund as they share the floor alongside Chris and Kurtis Vaux as the Ravens stretch the roster over two local fami-

lies. Come on out to support the Ravens junior lacrosse team in their season opener. Minor Ravens players get in free wearing their jersey. General admission is $3.00.

Campbell River Grandmothers to Grandmothers walking against the tide of HIV/AIDS BARBARA AKELAITIS SPECIAL TO THE MIRROR

Hope is the pillar of the world – African Proverb The peoples of the countries of sub-Saharan Africa are facing what often seem to be insurmountable problems as they attempt to improve their respective situations in life. HIV/AIDS af fects millions of orphans, families and grandmothers. It is a grim, complicated picture of violence against women and children, a lack of opportunity for education, healthcare, food, water, shelter and jobs. These are the very basic ingredients of a civilized society. With unemployment running from 65 to 90 percent, one jobholder often ends up providing for an extended family of 20 or more while it is particularly hard for women to find work. One grassroots project supported by The Stephen Lewis Foundation is creating HOPE and opportunity from the earth of Africa. Located on what was once the plantation of Karen Von Blixen, famous from the award winning movie Out of Africa, is a small workshop where ceramic beads and jewellery are made by Kenyan women. The result is Kazuri, the Swahili word for small and beautiful. Kazuri began in 1975 with the goal of providing work for two disadvantaged women. As word of the uniqueness and beauty of the Kazuri jewellery spread, sales increased. At this time more

than 350 women are employed and the business still keeps growing. Here women are trained and apply their skills to produce these carefully shaped, polished, fired, painted and fired again small beads.
