Taking a bite out of dog attacks Kristen Douglas Black Press At just eight years of age, Maggi has already built up a full resume – she has taught children how to properly care for a pet, passed on crime prevention tips and provided therapy for clients in nursing homes. But Maggi isn’t what you might expect. She’s a gray, fluffy poodle Pomeranian with many talents. Along with her trainer owner and fellow performer, Judy Hagen, Maggi wows audiences with her spins, jumps and other tricks. Impressively, Maggi will “stay” for as long as Hagen would

like her to, even while Hagen leaves the room. Although Maggi has been known to hold an informal dog show for clients at local nursing homes and the Campbell River Adult Care Society she is best known by children for her part in the SPCA’s Bite Free Program. Maggi and Hagen, an SPCA volunteer from Quadra Island, travel around to local schools and daycares to promote safety around animals. The program also educates kids on how to care for a pet and helps them to understand their furry friends. “I tell the kids that a pet is just like

a kid, it’s a part of the family,” said Hagen. “And we teach them that a bark doesn’t necessarily mean a dog is unhappy and other dog language.” The program is aimed at bite prevention by helping kids learn how to identify an angry dog and teaching them to always ask permission before petting or approaching a dog they do not know. Hagen not only uses Maggi but also illustrates her points with large, white signs with pictures and words. She also likes to engage the children. At a recent demonstration at Christian Life Daycare, Hagen called two girls up on stage to test

their memory. “We also do a bit of crime prevention so that if someone were to try and abduct them, they will remember what the person looked like,” said Hagen, who had the girls play one of her memory games. After watching Maggi and Hagen’s assistant on stage for about half an hour, Hagen had the pair leave the room and asked the two girl’s to try and describe Maggi and the assistant. Hagen, who has worked with the SPCA for 14 years now, first got involved with the program because she wanted to do something meaningful with Maggi.

“I wanted to teach so I got connected with the SPCA,” said Hagen. “Plus I hear of too many children being bit so it’s nice to do something that will help prevent that.” Hagen first started training dogs for agility demos with a group of friends, who called themselves the Tales of the Windemeer, when Cont. on Page 4

From Page 3 she lived in Invermere, B.C. It was there that she adopted Maggi. Hagen said before Maggi was born she had been spoken for to do movie work but when she was born black, the company no longer wanted her. “I really wanted her but I thought two dogs (that I already had) was enough,” said Hagen. “But my husband fell in love and we decided we’d take her and she became a part of our family.” After Hagen moved to Quadra Island five and a half years ago, she started the Bow Wow Dog Show which

features more than 20 dogs who do one big show on Quadra every year on Canada Day. Hagen was recently recognized with a BC Community Achievement Award for her long list of volunteer work on Quadra Island. She was given the honour for not only her work with dog safety programs but for lending her time as emergency social services director, for her work with the Quadra Island Volunteer Fire Department, the Quadra Island Tourist Information Centre, the Old Age Pensioners, the Chamber of Commerce and the Speed Watch program.

Gardening is exercise too Five years after buying a house in a new subdivision, I can say that we now have some semblance of a yard. What I didn’t realize, when we bought our cute little house, on its nice little pile of dirt, is that gardening and landscaping are an awful lot of work. Many people may not think of gardening in the same way as going to the gym. Digging and mowing the lawn, however, burn more calories per minute than walking on a treadmill. As with any form of exercise, gardening comes with the risk of sprains, strains and other minor injuries.

Taking some simple for an extended period steps to reduce the risk of time. Use a wheelbarrow to carry heavy loads, and make sure that your tools have handles that are the right length for you. To protect your back, keep objects close to your body, lift with your legs rather than your spine, and move your feet instead of twisting your body to move or pick things up. Never attempt to lift something that is too heavy for you. Test the object first to see if you can pick it up without strain. If you can’t, then get

someone to help you. Set a reasonable pace. Don’t expect to get all of your gardening tasks done in one day, even if it is the first sunny day of the year. Would you walk on a treadmill for five hours? It’s probably not a good idea to garden for that long either. Spread the work of gardening over a few days. Pace yourself, your garden isn’t going anywhere. Gardening is meant to be fun and enjoyable. I hope that this article helps you to enjoy your own garden while minimizing some of the little aches and pains that that come along with it.

Opportunity for Public Comment On Ferry Commission’s Preliminary Price Cap Decision The British Columbia Ferry Commission, the independent regulator of BC Ferries Services Inc. (BCFS), is seeking public comment on its preliminary decision on price caps for the company’s next performance term that begins April 1, 2012. Price caps, which are determined and enforced by the Commission, set the maximum permitted level of average ferry fares. The Commission’s preliminary decision, which includes a target for future productivity gains and reflects reductions in BCFS’ annual operating costs, is as follows: >

a 4.15% increase in average ferry fares on April 1 of each year from 2012 to 2015 on the major routes from the lower mainland to Vancouver Island and to the Sunshine Coast;

>

an 8.23% increase per year in average ferry fares on all other routes.

The Commission’s preliminary decision may be amended depending on further submissions by BCFS and possible changes to the Coastal Ferry Services Contract (CFSC) between BCFS and the Provincial Government. The Commission will make its final ruling by September 30, 2011 after consideration of such further submissions by BCFS, any substantive changes to the CSFC and public feedback. The public is invited to comment on the Commission’s preliminary price cap decision, as well as on the information provided to the Commission by BCFS including their annual and quarterly reports and/or any other information on the Commission’s website that relates to the commissioner’s powers and duties to establish price caps for the next performance term. The public is also invited to comment on the levels of ferry service under the existing CFSC or on possible service level changes identified by BCFS as opportunities to enhance efficiency. For further information, visit www.bcferrycommission.com. Comments can be e-mailed to info@bcferrycommission.com or mailed to BC Ferry Commission, RPO Hillside, Box 35119, Victoria BC, V8T 5G2. Deadline for comments or submissions is June 30, 2011.

Campbell River Mayor Roger McDonell, a longtime diving partner of Borrowman’s and a member of the board of directors of Telegraph Cove’s Whale Interpretive Centre. “It’s a good bunch, and I think they’ll do well,” said Borrowman. “We’ve left them a strong business.” Borrowman noted that Stubbs Island Whale Watching was not hit particularly hard by the economic downturn of the last several years. many of Stubbs Island’s clients were academicians, scientists and authors intent on studying Orcas. The partners worked closely with many of today’s top marine biologists as well as the late Dr. Michael Bigg, for whom the Robson Bight-Michael Bigg Ecological Reserve was named. “All the scientists involved in this research at the time were on the North Island,” Borrowman said. The pair purchased the Gikumi in 1983. Later, Borrowman bought out Mackay, who went on to open Mackay Whale Watching. Mary Borrowman joined Stubb’s Island in 1999, bringing her business management expertise and developing a reputation as an onboard culinary master. Now the couple will take their expertise on a new adventure in a comfortable old boat. “To get the boat certified to sleep people, it took over 10 years to get finished,” Borrowman said. Instead, the new business is offering allinclusive, multi-day, eco-adventure tours — both land-based and live-aboard — for smaller groups. The Gikumi has been refitted and was recently certified as a live-aboard vessel for six-day excursions that will feature a different anchorage each night. The Orcella website’s registration page indicates one of this summer’s scheduled trips and two in 2012 have already sold out. Meanwhile, the new owners of Stubbs Island Whale Watching are keeping the business right where it is, and are expected to retain all or most of the local staff. “The average person won’t see a difference,” Borrowman said. Geordie Dunstan and Hieke Wieske have operated Discovery Marine Safaris since 2007 and are joined by former

That led to Borrowman’s partnership with Mackay, leasing the Gikumi from Wastell to launch a new industry. “When we were working with whales in the 1970s, very few people knew they were there,” Borrowman said. “That’s how we got the edge, I guess you’d say. It was accidental; we didn’t plan this.” In the early years,

Valley soars with Dave’s contributions Earle Couper Black Press COURTENAY — When it comes to serving his community, Dave Mellin is as committed as anyone could ever hope to be. The young-looking 62-year-old with an engaging smile and quick laugh has had a lifelong interest in aviation and was appointed Honorary Colonel of 407 Long Range Patrol Squadron in April 2010. It was the latest of many leadership roles he has undertaken since moving to the Comox Valley some 50 years ago. The list is lengthy: past-president of the Courtenay Airpark Association, first chairman of the Comox Valley

Airport Commission, director of the B.C. Aviation Council, current director of the Comox Air Force Museum Association, an RCMP auxiliary constable with the Comox Valley RCMP for 40 years, member of the Airborne Law Enforcement Association, former member of both Comox Valley Ground Search and Rescue and Mount Washington Ski Patrol, executive member of the 2010 B.C. Seniors Games held in the Comox Valley and currently serving on the executive of the Mayor’s Charity Golf Tournament at Crown Isle. How does he make time to fulfil all his roles? “I have a very

understanding wife — that’s the key,” he smiled. Born in Kamloops, Mellin’s love of aviation began when he was 10. “PWA (Pacific Western Airlines) had a float plane service flying from Stewart, B.C. to Meziadin Lake, B.C. That was my first plane ride and I sort of got hooked on aviation then,” said Mellin, whose father Art flew with 419 Squadron out of Kamloops during the war. After moving to the Comox Valley, Mellin became involved with Air Cadets and then enjoyed flying and skydiving out at the base. He obtained his private pilot’s licence in 1990 and says he still flies about 25 hours a year.

“I like taking people up and showing them the area,” he said. As president of the Courtenay Airpark Association, he led an executive that cleaned up the facility and built new hangars. “After that they decided to form the Comox Valley Airport Commission (CVAC), and God bless Bronco Moncrief, he nominated me to chair it. We had an incredible group of people on the CVAC board.” Mellin says the biggest change he has seen in his years in the Valley was securing WestJet. “It brought the whole Valley out into the open. It’s been really good for all of Vancouver Island.” He says the Air Cont. on Page 15

Mellin appointed honorary colonel From Page 14 Force museum is working on a couple of interesting projects: they are trying to get a Snowbird jet on a pedestal at the new visitor centre and are working on a display case for a Vampire jet out at the airpark. “It’s got plywood in the fuselage, so it can’t get wet,” said Mellin of the Britishbuilt plane that was the first fighter jet the Canadian Air Force flew. Mellin says his 40

years with the RCMP auxiliary have also been rewarding. “I used to work at SuperValu (now Thrifty Foods) and the police station was right across the street from the court house. I got to know all the police offers because as a young kid I was packing their groceries. Some of their wives worked at SuperValu. One of them said ‘Have you ever thought of becoming an auxiliary?’ I said ‘What’s that?’ Next thing you knew I was

one.” Growing up in the Valley, Mellin enjoyed playing fastball. He also finds time for an occasional round of golf and game of hockey. “I play for both the RCMP and the 407 Demons. It’s a bit of a problem when the RCMP plays the services. Normally I go with the team that has the least amount of players. Or if it gets really confusing I just don’t show up,” he laughed. As Honorary

Colonel for 407 LRP Squadron, Mellin’s job is to act as a conduit between the military and the community. “It’s important for me to be able to explain to business people downtown what’s going on out there. Having lived and run a business here for as long as I have, you realize the military is the basis of our community … the biggest employer, biggest payroll.” He notes many military personnel stationed at 19

Wing return to the Comox Valley to retire. “888 Wing (the retired military service club) has the biggest membership in Canada,” he noted. “It’s quite an honour when you become an Honorary Colonel. The Minister of Defence has to approve it and your commission is signed by the GovernorGeneral of Canada. It’s pretty humbling, to be quite honest with you. Very humbling and quite an honour to be asked to do it.”

What’s the best part about the Comox Valley? “The recreational aspect of what’s available here. It’s a clean community, i.e. no major industry as such, and the people — the people are huge. People are what make any community. Having been on numerous committees the people in this community just constantly give and give and it makes it a fun place to live.” Mellin has been retired for six years

now after being an owner/operator of Comox Valley Insurance. He enjoys woodwork and has just finished helping his son renovate his house. “Boy, am I ever going to have a lot of free time now,” he smiled.
