Art show focuses on the creative process

Just as important, visitors have the opportunity to talk to the artists, ask questions and get to know what motivates and inspires them to create. To the art patron, art appreciation goes beyond the image on the canvas or the shape and form of a sculpture. This year with over 50 artists displaying their work there is a virtual cornucopia of styles and mediums. Along with watercolors, oils, acrylics and pastels, there are works created using mixed media and of course sculptures created using a variety of materials. Over the years many art patrons have come to recognize the show as a terrific opportunity to search out new art or keep in touch with many of the artists who have been making a name for themselves. As each artist sets up their own booth, the show takes on the air of a giant open air art gallery with each artist having their own exhibition room. The Comox Valley has been recognized as one of Canada’s Cultural Capitals and it is special events like the Originals Only Show that add to the overall attractiveness and make the Valley one of this province’s and this country’s best places to live. There is no admission charge to visit the show and further information is available on the Originals Only website www.originalsonly.ca.

The first originals Only art show brought together about 20 artists who decided that Island artists needed their own venue to showcase their work. In addition they wanted to create an event that would provide the general public an opportunity to learn more about the traditional forms of fine art … painting and sculpture. Since that first show at Marina Park in Comox, the event has more than doubled in size. The artists who set up individual booths come from all over Vancouver Island, the outer islands and Powell River, a community on the mainland that is more closely associated with the Comox Valley than other parts of BC. The show is a juried show with the emphasis placed on the artists desire to publicly showcase and market their work. As a result the show is open to artists of all skill levels and visitors to the show will discover that along with artists who have an international reputation there are others who are just emerging. One of the main reasons for establishing the show is to provide an educational opportunity. With over 50 artists set up in the park each one having their own distinct style and technique, visitors have the opportunity to compare realism to abstract, expressionism to impressionism and contemporary to traditional.
