The optimal
Physical Check-up for seniors by Dr. Ingrid Pincott, N.D.
A
re you getting the complete yearly check up that you need to obtain optimal health? Are you doing enough to stay out of the hospital? Do you want to reduce the number of medications you are taking? A yearly check up for those 55 and older should include blood work such as 25(OH) vitamin D, CRP (C –reactive protein) an infl ammatory marker and ferritin (iron stores). If vitamin D levels are not optimal at 150nmol/l then there is a possible increase risk of many cancers, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, depression and poor energy. The list goes on! CRP is a measure of infl ammation and if your body is infl amed then the source needs to be identifi ed. Lowering CRP lowers the risk of all the diseases of aging including cancer, heart disease and dementia. Ferritin often increases with age and it is also an infl ammatory marker and keeping it between 50- 120 is best. A comprehensive cardiovascular blood work-up done with Atherotech gives people their risk factors for insulin resistance leading to
diabetes and heart disease as well as cardiovascular risk for heart attacks and strokes. This testing measures actual levels and sizes of HDL and LDL cholesterol lipoproteins. Typical lipid panels are calculations of cholesterols rather than actual numbers counted and sizes of the cholesterols are not measured in Canada. Once your risk has been identifi ed then a treatment program is instituted and monitored until the risk is lowered and maintained. Nutritional defi ciencies are common as the digestive ability to absorb nutrients declines with age. B12, vitamin D and minerals are the most common. For example alcohol depletes B vitamins especially B12. I fi nd that many neurological symptoms including dizziness and cognitive decline, as well as fatigue and bursitis of the hips and shoulders, respond well to B12 injections. Many physicians will not give B12 injections unless the blood work shows a defi ciency. In my practice I base B12 injections therapy on symptoms and response and this water soluble B vitamin is
well tolerated at high doses and long term therapy. Most seniors are low in Vitamin D and minerals and when these are restored many symptoms improve: insomnia, energy, joint pain, depression and blood pressure. Magnesium is a must in any mineral supplement and is the most important mineral for the treatment of heart arrthymias. Identifying food sensitivities can help many with their aches and pains as well as help with weight loss and controlling blood sugars. If you are taking a non-steroidal anti-infl ammatory for pain, all you are doing is cutting the wires to the fi re alarm, you are not getting to the cause of the pain. Natural anti-infl ammatories and joint health remedies work very well at lowering CRP, reducing the need for yet another medication. Osteopenia and osteoporosis often respond well to naturopathic treatment without the use of prescription medication. Hormone balancing for both men and women is important at any age and can be done with neutraceuticals as well as bioidentical
hormones. Specialized testing helps provide the help that is needed. There is help for recurrent urinary tract infections and enlarged prostates! Mental health issues may often be related to defi ciencies and when corrected, and combined with the use of other remedies that balance neurotransmitters in the brain, another prescription for antidepressants may be avoided. The goal of the comprehensive naturopathic check up is to keep you out of the hospital as much as is possible. Having a strong foundation for health is true health insurance! Check out www.projectbiglife.ca for expected number of days you might spend in the hospital based on your life style. See www.DrPincott.com for 15 years of past published articles on many different health conditions. Are you ready for a change? Try Naturopathic Medicine. Dr. Ingrid Pincott N.D. Keeping active as we age
here are a few things that seem to become really important as we become older adults - wanting to keep active without straining and injuring ourselves, keeping fl exible, maintaining good bone density & having an alert mind that is not buzzing in a stressful way. “Chitta Vritti Nirodhh” is a Yoga saying which can be translated as “the cessation of the fl uctuations of the mind.” Where the restless mind is calmed and the feeling of distracting energy is directed into constructive thought or movement. This is one of the greatest benefi ts that a regular Yoga practice gives you… but can you begin Yoga when you are over 50? The great news is YES! You have probably read the statistics - Yoga not only creates a stronger, more fl exible body; it also sharpens the senses, the mind and vastly increases your aerobic capacity. First, visit your doctor and inform them that you are going to begin attending Yoga. Ask them to recommend what information your Yoga teacher should know about you. Find yourself either a Beginner or Gentle Yoga class and let the teacher know that you are attending for the fi rst time, as well as any health concerns. If you have kept a physically active lifestyle Yoga may come easily to you and
the teacher may direct you to other styles of classes that may interest and challenge you. There are 5 benefi ts of a regular Yoga practice: Low-impact Exercise and Awareness In a Yoga class, you use the weight of your own body to create the dynamic poses (asanas). By bearing weight and consciously distributing it creates strength. By paying attention to your posture, you will begin to correct any bad habits you may have. Yoga includes many balancing poses which not only strengthen your body, sharpen your concentration, but also stimulate your neurons that send information to your ankles, feet and toes, which therefore become more healthy, making you less susceptible to falls. As you begin to truly feel the vibrancy of your own body, your lifestyle will naturally become healthier.
Flexibility and Bone Density “Your body is as young as your spine” says Iyengar. When fl exibility is encouraged gently in the body, it is amazing how quickly the body responds. Regular Yoga increases circulation to all soft tissue in the body, resulting in an improved range of motion. You will soon choose to do certain poses at home to enjoy the sensation of your body unwinding itself. Doctor Loren Fishman, author of “Yoga for Osteoporosis” says “Yoga pits one muscle group against another to generate forces far greater than gravity. Yoga is isometric exercise.
by Lorna Seldon Burd, Ocean Mountain Yoga
It is also weight bearing. Both of these types of activity have been proven to improve bone strength. Unlike most forms of “weightbearing” activity, Yoga does not damage cartilage or lead to osteoarthritis, another peril of aging. Yoga stretches the muscles, increasing the range of motion that osteoarthritis otherwise inexorably narrows. By improving range of motion, Yoga counters the chief and sometimes terrible impairment that comes with osteoarthritis.” Breathing and Blood Pressure Yoga means “Union of breath, body & mind” so all Yoga poses are done with a focus on how you breath as well as how you maintain a correct physical pose. This practice of breath work (Pranayama) has far reaching benefi ts from calming the mind to enhancing your respiratory function. There are breath exercises to heat you up and cool
you down. Some work on digestion, improving bowel function. Breath techniques are wonderful tools to improve your quality of sleep as well as lower your blood pressure.
Improved Memory and Mood The combination of physical poses (asana) with breath work (pranayama) stimulate the nervous system and the brain, improving memory as well as relieving anxiety. Simply attending a class, can change how you feel. Every pose has it’s benefi ts, backward bending poses are known to help “lift one’s spirits”. Forward bends are calming. You might be surprised that after a few weeks some of your aches and pains disappear, that you no longer need some of your pain medications and that life seems to have taken on a rosy hue.
Sense of Humour The best part about going to a Yoga class is that you get to have fun. One of the fi rst steps of Yoga is to let go of your ego. Have no expectations of what your body will be able to do on any day. This way you will be surprised, and will enjoy the challenges with humour. Know that your Yoga practice is a deeply personal journey and be grateful for your health, as it is, every day. Namaste.

SAFETY
8 to take care of themselves or manage their own fi nances. These factors make seniors especially attractive and vulnerable to con artists, particularly those who prey on well-intentioned men and women by posing as fake charities. But there are steps seniors can take to protect themselves from fraud. Be skeptical of solicitors. Many con artists will indicate that persons have given to the charity in the past, hoping that prospective victims simply won’t remember if that claim is valid or not. If a solicitor or appeal letter claims that you donated in the past, don’t simply take it at face value, especially
Precautions seniors can take when solicited for donations
C
harities often target certain groups of people when soliciting donations. Those groups may include past donors and people who have recently attended charitable fundraisers. It should come as no surprise that criminals posing as legitimate organizations tend to target specifi c groups of people as well. Anyone can be fooled
by a fraudulent charity, but such criminals tend to target seniors more than others. Seniors often make attractive targets to con artists because seniors are most likely to have substantial savings, own their homes and/or have excellent credit. In addition, elderly victims of fraud and other crimes are less likely to report those crimes out of fear that their families may feel they are no longer able

if you don’t recall making such a donation. Get specifi c information about alleged past donations, checking that information against your own bank records and receipts. Many donors claim donations as deductions on their tax returns, which also can be used to verify or debunk solicitors’ claims. Though not all solicitors claiming a past history of donations are dishonest, this is one way that criminals attempt to create a rapport with potential victims, so such claims should be verifi ed before making any donations. Don’t feel obligated to reciprocate a gift with a donation. Many charities send gifts, be it mailing labels or holiday cards, to prospective donors as a token of appreciation for past donations and as a way of encouraging future donations. Con artists are fully aware of this tactic and may try to imitate it in an attempt to defraud potential victims. No matter if the people behind those mailing labels or holiday ornaments are legitimate charities or con artists, you should not feel compelled to reciprocate a free gift with a fi nancial donation. Beware of solicitors pressuring you to donate. Reputable charities should
not be on the verge of shut down if you fail to make a donation, so such organizations never pressure prospective donors into making donations. If a solicitor is pressuring you into making a donation over the phone or in person, chances are strong that this person is not representing a reputable charity. In such instances, hang up the phone or, if the solicitor is on your property, politely close the door, ask the solicitor to leave your property and contact the local authorities. Send donations directly to the charity after independently confirming their address. When making charitable donations, those donations should never be given directly to solicitors. Donations should only be made after you have independently confi rmed the charity’s address and mailed straight to the organization. Never make a cash donation, as cash provides no paper trail should you want to deduct your donation or should you learn that you were victimized by a con artist posing as a representative of
a reputable charity. Request personal information not be shared. Upon receiving a charitable donation, many charities share their donors’ contact information with other charities. Such actions are legal as long as no sensitive information is shared. But many donors would prefer their contact information not be shared so they don’t fi nd themselves being inundated with solicitations from other charities. Donors can ask to opt out of having their personal information shared upon making a donation. This is especially important for seniors living on fi xed incomes who simply cannot afford to support many causes no matter how compelling those causes are.

Exercise and aging Common concerns about exercise after 50
E
xercise is an essential element of a healthy lifestyle. Including exercise in your daily routine can lower your risk for diabetes, heart disease and stroke, and exercise can even sharpen mental acuity, reduce anxiety and improve mood. But as benefi cial as exercise can be, many men and women, particularly men and women over the age of 50, who have not laced up their sneakers in years are hesitant to begin an exercise regimen for a variety of reasons, potentially putting their long-term health at risk. Regardless of a person’s age, beginning a new exercise regimen can be intimidating. But it’s especially so for men and women over the age of 50, who might not know where to begin or how to approach adopting a healthier lifestyle. According to the National Institute on Aging, the following are a few points men and women should know as they attempt to improve their physical fi tness with a more active lifestyle. • Exercise is safe even
if you have not been physically active in a long time. Many older men and women worry that suddenly embracing physical fi tness after years of inactivity may be detrimental to their health. But that’s only true if men and women don’t exercise caution at the outset of their routines. When beginning the routine, take things very slowly at fi rst, choosing to walk or bike every day rather than hitting the treadmill and adjusting it to maximum resistance. When strength training, start off with very little weight so your muscles can grow acclimated to the motions and you can get the exercises down pat. As you grow more comfortable and your body starts to feel more up to the challenges of daily exercise, you can begin to gradually alter your cardiovascular and strength training workouts to make them more challenging. • Exercise can make existing medical conditions more manageable. Men and women over the age of 50 who have preexisting
medical conditions are likely to fi nd that exercise alleviates rather than exacerbates their physical problems. Studies have shown that regular exercise and physical activity can benefi t people with arthritis, high blood pressure and heart disease. But it’s still recommended that men and women with preexisting medical conditions consult with their physicians before making any lifestyle changes. Some conditions may affect a person’s ability to be active, and it’s best to get the go-ahead from a physician before beginning an exercise regimen. Doctors may even suggest certain activities that have been known to alleviate particular conditions. • Exercise reduces fatigue, so sitting around to preserve strength is not effective. Exercise improves strength and energy levels, so sitting on the sideline to preserve your strength is counterproductive and could lead to serious medical problems. Men and women who are inactive are almost twice as likely to develop heart disease as those who are more active. uncommon for men and women in their golden years to think they are too old to exercise. Some may feel that their toned down workouts cannot possibly be making much of an impact thanks to the physical limitations old age has put on their bodies, while others may think it’s unwise for someone in their 70s or 80s to be physically active. But no one is too old to exercise, as exercise helps the body stay strong and fi t even when you can no longer max out on the bench press or squat hundreds of pounds. Scaling back your exercise routine will be
necessary as you get older, but that does not mean you cannot
still enjoy and benefi t from physical activity. Continuing to exercise as you age is a great way to improve your quality of life and stay as active as possible well into your golden years.

Managing money after 50
I
nvestors know that money management can be diffi cult. The ebb and fl ow of the economy can be similar to a roller coaster, with soaring highs followed by steep drops, and those changes all affect investors’ bottom lines. It’s no wonder then that many investors over 50 envision the day when they can get off that
roller coaster and simply enjoy their money without having to worry about the everyday ups and downs of the market. But managing money after 50 is about more than just reducing risk. Reducing risk as retirement draws near is a sound fi nancial strategy that can safeguard men and women over 50 from the fl uctuations of
the market That’s true whether investors put their money in stocks, real estate or other areas that were not immune to the ups and downs of the economy. But there are additional steps men and women can take after they turn 50 to ensure their golden years are as enjoyable and fi nancially sound as possible. • Prioritize saving for

retirement. Men and women over 50 know that retirement is right around the corner. Despite that, many people over 50 still have not prioritized saving for retirement. It’s understandable that other obligations, be it paying kids’ college tuition or offering fi nancial assistance to aging parents, may seem more immediate, but men and women over 50 should recognize that their time to save for retirement is rapidly dwindling. Just because you are retired does not mean your bills will magically disappear. In fact, some of those bills, such as the cost of
medical care, are likely to increase. So now is the time to make retirement a priority if you have not already done so. It might be nice to fi nance a child’s college education, but that should not be done at the expense of your retirement nest egg. Kids have a lifetime ahead of them to repay college loans, while adults over 50 do not have that much time to save for retirement. • Start making decisions. People retire at different times in their lives. Some people want to keep working as long as they are physically and
mentally capable of doing so, while others want to reap what their lifetime of hard work has sewn and retire early. Finances will likely play a strong role in when you can comfortably retire, so start making decisions about your long-term future. Do you intend to stay in your current home or downsize to a smaller home? Will you stay in your current area or move elsewhere? These decisions require a careful examination of your fi nances, and many will hinge on how well you have managed your money in the past and how well you manage it in the years ahead.

Marine Link Tours Freight Boat Cruise Vacations on the “MV Aurora Explorer”
C
ruise the inland waterways of coastal British Columbia and experience the magic of the MV Aurora Explorer, a 135 foot landing craft that transports a wide variety of heavy equipment and general freight throughout the Gulf of Georgia and the remote inlets of Johnstone and Queen Charlotte Straits. You will enjoy rugged coastal scenery, observe many species of whales and other sea life, and experience the history and influence of the early explorers, settlers, cannery workers and native populations on the coast. You’ll listen as the crew works the radio telephones or navigates the ship by radar and watch as freight is loaded and discharged along the way. The Aurora Explorer operates from a base
“A One of a Kind Journey into the Pacific Northwest’s Inside Passage” at Menzies Bay (15 km north of Campbell River, BC, Canada), and offers a dining lounge, lower deck lounge and bridge deck lounge for passenger comfort and viewing. There is a nautical and history library of coastal BC on board. The vessel has outside observation decks where passengers can observe activity on the freight deck, enjoy the passing scenery or simply lie back and soak up the sunshine and salt air. The Aurora Explorer is Transport Canada Ship Safety approved
and carries the full range of safety equipment as directed by the Canadian Coast Guard. Passenger accommodations received an upgrade during the winter 2012/13 and now offers one bunk-bed style stateroom and five twin bed style staterooms. There are six shared washrooms, three shower rooms. Passenger accommodation is offered on regular freight voyages to a variety of coastal locations. Trip packages are five days in duration. Passengers enjoy observing the ship at work, but there’s also time
for play. Going ashore for a picnic or exploring tide pools in a hidden bay, throwing in a line when the vessel is waiting on the tide and barbeques on the deck are all part of the pleasures of freight-boat cruising on the Aurora Explorer. The Georgia Straits of coastal British Columbia, Canada are dotted with hundreds of islands. This is lumber and fishing country, nearly free of roads. One cargo ship delivers heavy equipment and supplies to remote camps, and takes on passengers to view the wild beauty of the straits
and inlets, with towering peaks and glaciers overlooking the sea. www.marinelinktours.com 250-286-3347
