Some decorative touches make all the difference Mouldings and other architectural decorations are one of the easiest ways of giving a finishing touch to the outside of a house. A long, dark hallway leading to some bedrooms and a bathroom… many homes have them. They are a vestige from the 1960’s and 70’s and, in the decades since, have been a real headache to redecorate. Here are a few tips to help you reduce that long, boring look.

Transforming a corridor into an interesting and agreeable part of the home is not particularly difficult. By learning some simple principles of interior design you can discover how to manipulate the space to add volume in this high-traffic area.

Lighting is also an important element in creating the desired effect. Add lamps at short distances along the hallway to give a soft, yellow lighting. For a more dramatic effect create a low shelf, near the base of the wall, on which lights can be positioned projecting upwards to cut the space, creating intense pools of light right along the passageway.

To diminish the effect of length, architectural elements can be added such as shelves or narrow tables on which dried flower arrangements or photographs can be positioned. If you have enough space you could even add bookshelves. Another option is to give your hallway a picture gallery look

A chair, placed at an angle between the first two doors could be the finishing touch and add even more character to what was once a boring hallway.

Although some driveways are made of concrete, asphalt is much more common because it is so much cheaper. And it is here that the ravages caused by our severe climate can be the most visible.

If the passing of the seasons has had time to cause damage, any holes and cracks must be repaired. The problem of cracks is easily solved with specially designed asphalt crackfiller. To repair a hole, the surface should first be brushed clean and then washed down with a hose. Fill the hole with asphalt patch, taking care to use a little more than necessary. Heat this with a dual heat gun and then, using a trowel, tamp it down level with the surrounding area. Finally flatten everything with a brick or a piece of wood.

As with anti-rust treatments for cars, the best solution remains preventive maintenance. It is recommended to apply a seal coating to asphalt every three years. This coating fills any small cracks or holes, preventing water from penetrating under the surface, especially during periods of frost and thaw. However,
