Bad week for pedestrians RENÉE ANDOR CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Pedestrians were hit by vehicles in three separate instances last week. A 35-year-old woman was hit by a car while crossing the intersection of Robron Road and Alder Street at 2:20 p.m. on Friday. “Totally a piece of bad driving resulted in the injury to this person,” said RCMP Sgt. Craig Massey. “When we have vehicles stopped at a cross walk, other drivers need to be aware of the totality of their surroundings and generally if other vehicles are stopped at a cross walk there’s a good reason for it.” Two vehicles making right hand turns were stopped at the cross walk waiting for the woman to cross the intersection. A 19-year-old Campbell River woman driving south on Alder Street in a 1986 Honda Accord passed the two stopped vehicles, entered the crosswalk, and struck the pedestrian. “For whatever reason this young driver decided to go past them (the other cars),” said Massey. “From the pedestrian’s standpoint, at that point vehicle traffic has stopped to allow you safe passage in the cross walk as you’re entitled to do, and then she was clipped by the impending driver.” The pedestrian was treated for minor injuries. Charges of fail to yield to a pedestrian will be laid against the 19-year-old driver.
A young man was hit on Dogwood Street near 7th Avenue while he was jaywalking at 1:42 p.m. on Thursday. The 23-year-old Campbell River man was running across Dogwood Street attempting to dodge through passing traffic. According to Massey, witnesses reported that he got through the southbound traffic, but when crossing into northbound traffic he emerged suddenly from behind a large truck. “The last vehicle that he ran in behind in the southbound traffic was some type of a cube truck so that obscured the visibility of him to any northbound traffic,” said Massey. “So he emerged from behind that cube truck directly into the path of the northbound motorist.” Massey said the young man ran into a Jeep driven by a Campbell River man when he crossed into the northbound lane. “He actually ran into the vehicle, rather than the vehicle running into him,” said Massey. “If he was struck fully on the front of the vehicle, that would indicate the vehicle had struck him. In this case, he struck a moving vehicle from the side and ended up going over the hood and impacting the windshield.” The pedestrian was transported to hospital, and details on the man’s injuries are unknown, but he was released from hospital later that day. He was issued with a violation Continued on A3

Searchers began day four of the hunt for an 81-year-old Port Hardy man yesterday. William Fisher Sr. was last seen on Thursday afternoon, buying gas at Sayward Junction on his way home to Port Hardy from a medical appointment in Campbell River. He did not return home as planned, and police were notified Friday after noon by concerned family. Port Hardy RCMP

both air and ground search crews were out, attempting to locate the white coloured 1995 Chrysler fourdoor sedan, (BC plate 161 MCK), that Fisher was driving at the time of his disappearance. The ground search focused on the roadway between Sayward and Port Hardy, with air crews examining a larger geographical area. On Monday, poor weather prevented air crews from searching but ground crews continued, focusing their efforts between Campbell River and Port Hardy, as well as logging roads throughout the area. Before the Mirror went to press yesterday, Campbell River Search and Rescue (CRSAR) duty search manager Grant Cromer said fog had grounded air crews again, but they may have gone in the afternoon depending if it cleared. Ground crews were still hard at work, focusing efforts around
Sayward, including logging roads and some of the smaller lakes in the area. “We’re getting lots of ground covered,” said Cromer. “We’re still continuing with our efforts but we haven’t seen any indication that he’s anywhere between Campbell River and Port Hardy.” Police do not suspect foul play. Although snow was falling around the time Fisher was driving back to Port Hardy, Cromer said it wasn’t very much. “There wouldn’t be enough snow to cover his vehicle; it wasn’t like it was feet and feet, it was inches at best,” explained Cromer, adding that now “the roads and everything are clear. There’s a couple of inches on the sides and in the ditches but it’s not like it’s covering trees or anything. It’s pretty patchy.” Anyone who may have seen Fisher or his vehicle, are asked to contact the Port Hardy RCMP at 250-949-6335.

notice for failing to yield right of way to a vehicle when not in a cross walk. Later in the evening on Thursday, a pedestrian was hit in a gas station parking lot, however, the driver and the pedestrian left the scene before police arrived. Massey described the incident as “very odd.” Witnesses at the scene said that a silver Honda CRV had been parked curbside in the 900 block of South Island Highway about 8:00 p.m. “For reasons unknown, the vehicle starts to accelerate, turns into the parking lot for that fueling station, strikes the pedestrian,” explained Massey. “The pedestrian goes up over the hood of the vehicle and rolls off, and the vehicle continues on and flees from the scene.” When police arrived, they were told that the pedestrian had gotten up and left the scene as well. Massey said police are still investigating the incident. “We’re trying to track down both the pedestrian and the operator of the silver Honda CRV to try and find out if this was an intentional act or truly an accident,” said Massey.

Campbell River is one of four pilot communities for Jobs Plan KRISTEN DOUGLAS
CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
While NDP North Island MLA Claire Trevena welcomes the new BC Jobs Plan to Campbell River, she has some reservations
munity for quite some time,” Trevena said. “My caution with the Jobs Plan, and I have talked to Minister (Pat) Bell about it, is that it’s not just going to be the government saying we’ll all come
about what it could mean for the city. “I think it’s import a n t we d o c o m e together to find a way to find employment, it’s a real need and something that’s been happening in the com-
together to talk about it, and that’s it but that the government actually puts something into it.” Bell, minister of jobs, tourism and innovation, announced last Thursday that Camp-
bell River is one of four pilot communities for the provincial government’s Canada Starts Here: BC Jobs Plan. The plan is aimed at attracting investment, identifying opportunities, economic diver-
sification and job creation. The goal is to create long-term jobs and investment across the province by building on key competitive advantages. Campbell River will be one of the first B.C. TELUS AUTHORIZED DEALERS VANCOUVER ISLAND

communities the government assists by providing expertise, and facilitating community and regional linkages to key partners, stakeholders and programs to advance investment opportunities, according to a provincial government release. In January, Bell will be in Campbell River to host a forum with representatives from local government, business, industry, First Nations and education to explore investment opportunities and share solutions in overcoming barriers. By the end of the forum, an inventory of potential programs and an initial action plan on how best to implement them will have been created, says the release. “These pilots will help us to focus on specific job-creating opportunities,” Bell said last week. “This is about working with our community and First Nations partners to create a sustainable economic future.” As a pilot community, Campbell River will receive no funding from the province. Trevena wonders what that could mean for the city’s chances at attracting new jobs and industry. “That underlines my concern,” Trevena said. “If the government is not adding any money, that’s where the red flags are coming from. What value is added from the government’s Jobs Plan – we’ll have to wait and see what it is.” Mayor-elect Walter Jakeway credited outgoing Mayor Charlie Cornfield and current councillors for lobbying the B.C. government. “They did a great job passionately pushing the community to the gover nment,” Jakeway said. “It’s great to be chosen, we’ll get the benefit of their creativity. It will be fun to watch and be a part of.” Jakeway said the Jobs Plan will allow Campbell River to focus on job possibilities and lead the way in employment across the province. “I’m sure there’s a lot of other communities that wish they could have been chosen,” Jakeway said. Dogs seized in summer, now $9,000 bill from SPCA RENÉE ANDOR
CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
A Merville dog breeder had 71 dogs seized in July, and now she’s been handed a $9,000 bill by the BCSPCA. Last week, Green Acres Kennels owner Nancy Kitching received a bill for boarding and vet costs for the few days time between when her dogs were seized by the BCSPCA and when she formally ‘surrendered’ them. “I have no money,” said an upset Kitching. “This is like my whole life they’ve taken away from me. I have no retirement money. I have nothing.” Kitching raised bulldogs and terriers among other breeds, but was left with just six dogs and eight puppies after the seizure, which she said basically shut down her business. She doesn’t know how she will pay the bill. BCSPCA’s general manager of cruelty investigations Marcie Moriarty said billing for seized dogs before owners surrender is common practice for the BCSPCA. “The costs that she’s responsible for are all the costs to relieve her animals of distress up until the point that she surrendered them, and then we took on all the costs,” explained Moriarty. “Seventy-one dogs, and significant health concerns – I mean, we spent way more than the $9,000 on those dogs.” Kitching said she did not immediately surrender the dogs because she was considering legal help to get them back. However, she decided not to as it would have cost too much money including lawyer costs, and BCSPCA boarding fees that could wrack up during the legal battle. Kitching said she received the bill Tuesday and she and was called Thursday by BCSPCA special provincial constable Tina Heary, who was present at the time of seizure, asking when Kitching would pay the bill. Kitching was so upset after the call she decided to go on a hunger strike.
The hunger strike is “not just about the $9,000,” said Kitching. “I want what happened revealed.” However, Moriarty said she spoke with Heary who said she only phoned to ensure Kitching received the bill via email, and did not ask when Kitching would pay it. Moriarty said health concer ns included periodontal disease, untreated dermatitis and a condition where the dogs have trouble breathing through their noses due to poor genes in the breeding pool, and can only be fixed through surgery. Kitching said she tried to accomplish all of the orders on the
that the health concerns were “minor.” Moriarty said that the BCSPCA g ave Kitching plenty of warnings, and she did comply with some of them, but not all. “We have a very lengthy history with this individual,” said Moriarty. “It often happens – unfortunately people run a very borderline operation and in this case these animals were in distress. She’d been given an opportunity many times and it took a warrant.” Moriarty said animal cruelty charges will be recommended sometime “soon.” Kitching remains adamant that her dogs

Province backs Agriculture Plan KRISTEN DOUGLAS

A plan that will take Campbell River back to its roots was approved by the province. The city’s Agriculture Plan received the stamp of approval from Don McRae, the Minister of Agriculture, at a signing ceremony in Victoria on Nov. 22. “It’s quite an accomplishment for the minister to come back, after seeing the plan, and support it,” said outgoing Mayor Charlie Cornfield. “He was very pleased.” The city’s Agriculture Steering Committee spent two

up, “I had really appreciated the fact our farm made our large family sustainable. It’s in my bones. It’s a natural for me to be excited as we move forward.” The plan also opens a window for Campbell River. Ostler said roughly one-third of property within the city limits is part of the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR), land which is set aside by the provincial government for agriculture as the priority use. “Our ultimate goal is to turn it into an economic opportunity for the establishment of greenhouses and agri-food businesses,” Ostler said. A soil specialist studied the soil value of the land and determined that in areas west of Willis
Road and west of Storey’s Creek golf club, the soil value is comparable to what’s found in the Fraser Valley, Ostler said. “We see that as a great opportunity to attract business here, we’re hopeful that with the support of the provincial government and the economic arm, Rivercorp, that we can work towards that goal,” she said. Pat Bell, minister of jobs, tourism and innovation, said Campbell River’s Agriculture Plan shows great initiative from the city. “Campbell River’s Agriculture Plan is part of the North Island’s future economic resilience and good news for job creation, business, investment and the broader community Continued on A6

years working on the plan. Morgan Ostler, a former city councillor and chair of the committee, is thrilled to see something that is close to her heart, come to fruition. “I want to say how tremendously pleased I am,” Ostler said. “It’s been three years since I brought my proposal forward to city council.” Ostler, who grew up on a farm outside of Victoria, went to city council because she was concerned with Campbell River’s lack of food security. “We’re totally dependent, on food consumed here in Campbell River, to be shipped in on a daily basis. I think Campbell River produces less than one per cent of what we consume – that leaves us vulnerable,” Ostler said. Growing

Agriculture Plan: Laying the groundwork for investment Continued from A6 as Vancouver Island continues to re-inforce its profile as a strong, regional agricultural hub in the province, Bell said in a release. The plan projects the community as having the capacity to produce 10 per cent of its own food supply by 2031. The plan also anticipates farming would occur in many different forms,
such as value-added, artisan and niche products. Ostler said the Agriculture Steering Committee’s next move will be to ask the new council to support an Agricultural Advisory Committee, which would be the thirtysixth in B.C. “I’m hopeful the new council will be as excited as I am about
the new opportunities that lay before us. The city’s Agriculture Plan can be viewed online at www. sustainable campbellriver.ca What the Agriculture Plan says: ■Approximately 5,000 hectares (30,000 acres) of land in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR)

Road trip supports cystic fibrosis A new raffle in town could send you on a road trip to catch Canucks, Flames and Oilers in action as well as help fund the fight against cystic fibrosis. The winning prize includes: VIP tickets to 3 NHL games Thursday, March 15, Phoenix in Calgary; Friday, March 16, Calgary in Edmonton; Saturday, March 17 Columbus in Vancouver; airfare for two to all three games; hotel accommodation; and $500 spending money. Tickets are available at: Action Source for Sports, Intersport, Scotiabank, Steve Marshall Ford, Balloons ‘N More Party Shop in Willow Point
or by calling 250-9234992. All proceeds are in support of the fight against cystic fibrosis, a disease known only too well to two young brothers who have recently moved to the Campbell River area, nine-year-old River and seven-year-old Quinn Gray. Their mother Tracey Gray said, “the boys are just like any other children – they like to have fun, play and do sports.” They enjoy attending Oyster River School. While the brothers like to joke around and have fun, the whole family takes cystic fibrosis very seriously.
(From left) River Gray, Ed Walters from Action Source for Sports and Quinn Gray urge everyone to buy tickets for chance to win a hockey road trip.

“It is crucial that River and Quinn do physiotherapy twice daily to help keep their lungs clear and take all their medication or they will quite simply not survive,” said Tracey. A good part of their day is devoted to dealing with the effects of cystic fibrosis. River also has to deal with extra dietary modifications due to celiac disease. Cystic fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children
and young adults. There is no cure for CF. It causes a build up of thick mucus in the lungs leading to severe respiratory problems which can make breathing difficult. Funds raised from the Hockey Road Trip raffle will support CF research and clinical care. Canadian researchers funded by Cystic Fibrosis Canada are viewed as leaders in the global effort to find a cure or control for cystic fibrosis.

Our View
Time is a priceless gift The mall parking lots are filling to the capacity for which they’ve been designed. The data lines to credit card companies are humming to the tune of more than $28 billion in We say: It doesn’t Canadian retail sales in December. cost anything and Shoppers wearied from all that spending fill the food courts and it will always be benches. But in our frantic pursuit of the perfect Christmas gift, we treasured often overlook the one that won’t strain our budget or tax our patience for lines at the checkout counter. Our time. Each of us has an annual time account of 8,760
hours. That’s more than half a million minutes. While a certain amount of that time must be alloted to sleeping, eating and earning a living, there’s still plenty to spare. Time to spend with family and friends. Time to help out in the community, volunteering with organizations that bring comfort and assistance to those in need or less fortunate. Time to lend a hand on the sidelines and benches of kids sports teams, teaching young people valuable lessons of camaraderie and sportsmanship that will stay with they their whole lives. Time to lead a troup of scouts or girl guides. Time to cook a meal or weed
the garden for a lonely senior. Time to give a shelter dog a respite from its cage with a noon hour walk or to help the staff with cleaning and feeding the animals. Time to make the world a cleaner place by helping to clean a ravine or count salmon swimming upstream to spawn. Time to open a door for someone whose arms are laden with parcels. Time to wish a stranger a Merry Christmas. The gift of time is, well, timeless. It doesn’t require batteries or complicated instructions. And, best of all, it doesn’t cost money. But it will always be treasured. – Black Press
Good point: Food Bank Once again the Campbell River & District Food Bank wishes to thank the generosity of the citizens of Campbell River for their on-going generosity in supporting our efforts to supply food to those in need in our community. Thank you to students and staff of Southgate Middle School and Timberline Secondary who outdid themselves again this year in the Thanksgiving Food Drive. They lead the School District Food Drive this year in the quantity of goods donated. Thank you also to those individuals and companies who have contributed specifically to help us with our roof replacement and the construction of the shelter on the side of the building which keeps our waiting clients out of the rain on our distribution days. We continue to provide food packages to between 1500 and 1900 folks per month. Although we continue to keep our noses above the water, we rely heavily on food contributions from our grocery stores and financial support from the community as costs continue to rise... utilities particularly, as we have numerous coolers and freezers to preserve perishables. About 40 per cent of our clients are children. Please support our “Food Trailer” program during the next several weeks, sponsored by Dave Reynolds and friends from “The River” radio station. It is located this year in the Save-On parking lot. Your generosity over the Christmas season helps us over this sometimes difficult season for some and sends us well into early Spring. If the propaganda flowing over “tar sands” crude shipments across B.C. were oil, the province would be out of deficit by now. U.S.-funded professional environmentalists and their aboriginal partners lined up with the NDP last week to peddle a range of half-truths and falsehoods about proposals to pipe diluted bitumen from Alberta to a new port at Kitimat, where tankers would deliver it to Asian markets. They staged a slick news conference in Vancouver where they claimed to have a seamless wall of aboriginal communities the length of B.C. opposing the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline. A 10-year-old girl in a cedar bark hat
warned of devastation to the coastal ecology, providing the kind of emotional visual that appeals to urban television audiences who know and care little about science or resource industries. This event was co-ordinated with the publication of a report warning of huge risks from piping “tar sands” crude. The report was produced by the Natural Resource Defence Council, the Living Oceans Society and the Pembina Institute. These three obscure organizations are among those identified by independent researcher Vivian Krause on her website, www.fairquestions. typepad.com/rethink_campaigns/. These and other environmental
groups have received millions from U.S.-based foundations in recent years. Here’s one of many examples of the money trail that Krause has followed. U.S. tax returns show the Pembina Institute and a B.C. environmental group were paid $200,000 by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund Inc. in 2006-07 “to prevent the development of a pipeline and tanker port” on the B.C. coast. The same Rockefeller fund has investments in competing pipelines going south. Documenting this huge money spill, Krause concludes that U.S. interests are working to stop Canada from exporting oil to Asia so the U.S. will be the only market available. They
dress it up as environmentalism; we fall for it. Not surprisingly, the latest “tar sands” scare report was seized on by the B.C. NDP. “The pipeline goes over mountains, across farmland, over the Fraser and Skeena Rivers and straight through the Great Bear Rainforest to the Pacific, where it will be picked up by supertankers trying to navigate our inland coastal waters,” said NDP environment critic Rob Fleming. Fleming parroted the report’s claim that diluted bitumen is more likely to cause corrosion in pipes and tankers. Enbridge issued a statement refutContinued on A11

Local dealers can get you in a ‘green’ car RENÉE ANDOR CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Campbell Riverites looking to buy a ‘green’ car can get a sweet deal thanks to a new incentive. Consumers will receive up to $5,000 off the pre-tax price when they buy or lease a qualifying new battery electric, fuel cell, plug in hybrid or compressed natural
gas vehicle. The Clean Energy Point of Sale Incentive Program is an initiative from the BC Ministry of Environment and LiveSmart BC, in partnership with the New Car Dealers Association of BC. Barrie Brown Nissan, Steve Marshall Motors, Strathcona Toyota and Tyee Chevrolet Buick GMC are participating dealers in Campbell River.
“It’s great, glad to see that the government’s going to put some weight behind going green,” said general manager of Steve Marshall Motors Karl Ebdrup. Steve Marshall offers the Ford Focus Electric, which qualifies for $5000 off the price. Barrie Brown, owner of Barrie Brown Nissan, said the Nissan Leaf qualifies
for $5,000 off and the Altima Hybrid which has been popular in the local market qualifies too. The Altima’s “been proven to be more useful to people who travel up and down the Island,” said Brown. “That’s more suited to the roads we have and the long distance in between.” The Chevrolet Volt, ava i l abl e at T ye e Chevrolet Buick GMC,

Fletcher: NDP parroting environmentalists Continued from A10 ing the study. Its oldest bitumen pipeline went into service in 1979, and “a complete metal loss inspection of this line in 2009 revealed no increased risk or incidence of internal corrosion.” Oh, and the proposed pipeline route doesn’t cross the Fraser River. And claims of a huge
show was organized by the local branch office of San Francisco-based ForestEthics. Those are the folks who blessed us with the faux-aboriginal name “Great Bear Rainforest.” A similar campaign is underway against expansion of the existing Kinder Morgan pipeline from Edmon-
ton to Burnaby, which brings Alberta oilsands crude to ships heading out under the Lions Gate bridge and winding through the Gulf and San Juan Islands to Asia. Tankers have been loading “tar sands” oil in Burnaby for about six years now, but the enviro-propagandists didn’t notice until a
couple of years ago. Up until then, Fleming and his colleagues raged about maintaining a “moratorium” on B.C. tanker traffic that never existed. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com tfletcher@blackpress. ca

Cloutier, Margaret Ann December 3, 2011 Margaret Anne of Black Creek passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, December 3, 2011. Predeceased by her parents, husband, brother and grandson, she is survived and will be dearly missed by her daughters, Linda, Maria (Ron) and Donna; many grandchildren; great grandchildren; her brother Bob (Marge); sisters Letty and Eileen as well as her closest friends, Coleen, Noel and family. Her love of her family and friends was evident in the way she enjoyed each moment with them. She was a great artist in her creations of sewing, making something old into something beautiful and new. We all enjoyed her cooking, baking and canning (as she loved to share). In her leisure, Margaret spent many hours playing cards or dice. We have great memories of times gone by. Margaret was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 260 Goodwin Road, where a celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, December 10th at 2:00 pm.

IN MEMORIAM
CAITLYN PATRICIA ANDERSEN December 19, 1992 December 8, 2008
In Loving Memory of a beautiful daughter and sister We do not need a special day to bring you to our minds, The days we do not think of you are very hard to ďŹ nd. Each morning when we awake, We know that you are gone, And no one knows the heartache as we try to carry on. Our hearts still ache with sadness, and secret tears will ow, What it meant to lose you, no one will ever know. Our thoughts are always with you, your place no one can ďŹ ll, In life we loved you dearly, in death we love you still. There will always be a heartache, often a silent tear, But always a precious memory of the days when you were here. If tears could make a staircase, and heartaches make a lane, We’d walk the path to heaven, and bring you back again. We hold you close within our hearts, and there will you remain, To walk with us throughout our lives until we meet again. Our family chain is broken now, and nothing seems the same, But as GOD calls us one by one, the chain will link again.
Love and miss you forever, Mom, Tim, Dexter and Cassidy xox

RUBBER BAND BAGS
Rubber bands dropped on the ground are usually found near areas where salal picking takes place. If these are your bags, please make sure that you take your garbage home with you after picking salal. Plastic takes many years to deteriorate and may be ingested by wildlife with no good results. If you would like to know the many reasons it is important not to leave your garbage behind, please call 250-203-2316.
Anyone with information on the person/s who illegally dumped these items can call CRIMESTOPPERS 1-800-222-TIPS or 250-286-5700. Think you won’t get caught? Think again! Go to: www.campbellriverrecycles.ca for locations that will take this kind of garbage!

Phoenix school wrestlers dominated over the 160 Island wrestlers that took to the mats Sat., Nov. 26 at Esquimalt High School by winning the Junior Boys and Junior Girls Team categories. The Novice Tournament provides an opportunity for wrestlers new to the sport to face opponents of similar age, ability and experience. The success of the local wrestlers is an indication that the sport continues to grow under the tutelage and dedication of several highly qualified coaches. Phoenix’s Kristine Osachuck (51 kg) topped her weight category; fellow students Larissa Melville (47 kg) and Savannah Pare (64-69 kg) finished second in their weight classes, followed by third place finishes for Aden Lovely (43 kg) and Madison Harper (47 kg). Greta Hamilton (64-69 kg), Anna Pehrsson (47 kg) and Gena Bannerman (54 kg) rounded out the Phoenix results with fourth place. The Phoenix boys dominated with first place finishes for
Tyrone Marting (35 kg), Dawson Jordan (48 kg) and Dace Harle (51 kg). Josh Nelson (54 kg) and Dylan Sparling (63 kg) were second in their weight categories and rounding out the boys results were fourth place Liam Ross (57 kg) and fifth place Callum McCullock (41 kg). Southgate’s first place finisher in the boys category (54 kg) was Chris Klatt, followed by third place Alex Nguyen (60 kg), and fourth place Mitchell Hall (45 kg) and Thomas Dunn (63 kg). Southgate’s Mackenzie Paddington (51 kg) and Amanda Anderson (54 kg) finished second, followed by teammates Brandi Hiltz who was fourth (57 kg) and Hanna Nelson (51 kg) in sixth place. Only three wrestlers from the Senior ranks attended the tournament. Timberline’s Brandon Brackett (56-61 kg) placed second in his group, and teammate Tyler Cowan (85-89 kg) was fifth. Carihi’s Dada Seely (69-72 kg) finished fourth.

Bantams pull an upset Travis Goodwin scored on his own rebound late in the third period to give the Number 1 Auto Body Bantam A Tyees a 5-4 upset victory over the previously undefeated Nanaimo Clippers in a game played Saturday afternoon in the Harbour City. It was the third win in a row for the surging Tyees as they climbed back to the .500 mark in the extremely competitive Vancouver Island Tier 1 division. Their record currently stands at three wins and three losses. Goodwin’s winner was his second goal and third point of the contest. Campbell River also recorded a pair of shorthanded markers, one each by Joe Gage and Grady McInnes. Tyson Goebel rounded out the scoring and Nic Kirchner was outstanding in net for the Tyees. “There was a sense of confidence in the dressing room prior to the game,” said head coach Peter Martin. “I think that’s a reflection of all the time, effort, and hard work the players have put in during the past month.” Martin also liked the resilience his club demonstrated as they were forced to come from behind twice to pull out the win. “I thought the turning point was the four minute penalty we killed during the second period – not only did we kill it but Joe Gage scored shorthanded.” On Sunday the Tyees travelled to Port Alberni for an exhibition game and fought to a 4-4 tie with the Bulldogs. Josh Coblenz registered his first hat trick of the season and Goodwin scored on the power play for Campbell
River. “That was a tough one to get up for after such an important, emotional win over Nanaimo,” said Martin. “Port Alberni is a big, physical team and although we outplayed them most of the game they are very good at the counter attack.” The two teams meet again later this month in a regularly scheduled league game. The Tyees will attempt to keep their winning streak alive this weekend when they travel to the Lower Mainland. They take Semiahmoo, Richmond, and North Delta in a trio of exhibition games.

She star ted beading about five years ago, and it soon grew into more than just a hobby. “I found I was buying a lot of jewelry and I decided I should try my hand at making it myself,” Goertz said. “Once I started working with all these tiny
seed beads, I found I couldn’t stop. I really love it.” Goertz’s earrings, necklaces and bracelets feature intricate designs made from the tiniest beads. She describes her elegant designs as “funky hippie” in nature. The beautiful craftsmanship ensures that her pieces appeal to all. The CR Art Gallery’s Christmas Arts and Crafts Market,

Rivercity presents Dickens like you’ve never heard him Rivercity Players is trying to make more of a contribution to community Christmas conviviality this year. Using the condensed script that Charles Dickens wrote for
public readings of his own favourite novel, A Christmas Carol, the players will be presenting a mixture of professional and amateur readers to entertain audiences at the Club-
house Theatre at 1080 Hemlock Street. Dickens was often asked to read his work publicly and offered handsome fees to do it. The first time he attempted it he tried
reading the whole of his favourite novel, A Christmas Carol. It took him nearly five hours but he was such a great entertainer and actor that he kept the audience enthralled
and hanging on his every word. For the sake of his own stamina he decided to shorten his novel to 80 minutes, and break it into five sections or staves. It is
this shortened version that Rivercity Players will be using to provide fun and entertainment for a small audience on Dec. 9. Each of the five sections will be read by

a different reader and top billing will go to Ryan Mennie of Eagle Radio and Neil Maffin, a professional actor now living on Quadra Island. Quadra Voce will provide lively seasonal music and lead a singalong carol session to end the evening. Refreshments in the for m of Christmas punch, tea and coffee together with some surprise goodies will be included in the price of the ticket. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children and $25 for a family of four, and may be obtained from Impressions Gallery in Shoppers Row or from a Rivercity member. There are only seventy-five seats available in the Clubhouse Theatre at 1080 Hemlock Street, so get your tickets now. It should be a fabulous, fun, festive entertainment for all.
