Celebrating Mt. Washington’s outdoors Miguel Strother Special to MidWeek Most people who’ve ever experienced Vancouver Island love its magical mix of mountains and ocean. Spectacular natural beauty helps define the entire region and it’s fitting that a new community centre now sits on the slopes of Mount Washington, at the edge of Strathcona Provincial Park. The multi-million dollar Vancouver Island Mountain Centre was designed through collaboration between the Vancouver Island Mountain Sports Society and CEI Architecture. Its intent is to bring together the Island’s diverse communities to celebrate all things outdoors. The 8,000 square foot, two-storey multi-use facility serves a variety of user groups, particularly mountain sports athletes and coaches, school groups and educational faculties. “The original idea was to design a facility around the energy of the Olympics,� says Jim Aalders, a partner at CEI Architecture. “But the society also needed it to be flexible enough so that if a corporation or a school group wants to have an annual retreat or

Although approximately $800,000 of the total budget came from the Western Economic Development fund, almost equal that amount came in the form of donated services, materials, and equipment, ensuring the centre was eventually completed on time and on a modest budget of approximately $3 million. “It’s been an unbelievable effort by so many people
who are obviously extremely dedicated to seeing the centre succeed,” says Aalders. In part the centre is built to help the VIMSS generate revenue to support emerging athletes from across Vancouver Island. And with access to both the Nordic and alpine areas of Mount Washington ski resort literally at the building’s doorstep, there is plenty of interest and early demand. The building officially
opened in early 2011 by hosting First Nations Snowboard Team coaches from across the province. According to the first guests, the Centre will serve visitors well at every turn. “We will absolutely go back,” says Paul McIntyre, a lead coach for the team. “I really think that what sells it is the group area with the kitchen just off to the side and the great hall with a fireplace at one end and the patio and view at the other. That is a great spot to

The fishing conditions are good to fair for the saltwater anglers heading out on a day when the wind has died down. Lighter tackle is being used this time of year and spoons and plugs are being used. Prawning is very good in certain areas around Quadra Island in water of 500 feet or more. I had a visit with the staff at Tyee Marine in Courtenay and the freshwater Prawning a Plenty fishing has been very good in the local lakes. Comox and Wolf Lake have had some nice trout caught in the past few weeks. Fishing from shore is your best bet using worms. Gold RRiver has been very good for the guys g going after steelhead trout and a the next couple of months this th area will see a lot of activity on o the river. Drift fishing produces more m fish but fun can be had on the th fly when the weather warms Tree Ryan Salmon, by local tattoo artist up and the fish get active. A fly that has been getting a lot of attention is the egg sucking black leech. Ken Ross has been fishing the Elk River and the weeks ahead should be very good for catch and release on this river. A nymph pattern fly will get some nice action and wading in fast water should be avoided. Watch for water levels where you can cross and stay away from the mud flats. A local tattoo artist, Ryan Tree, sent me this picture of a salmon Clint Buchholtz, Manager tattoo done on Randy Mankey North King Lodge from Port McNeill. Bait herring is being packed in Campbell River and shipped all over Canada. I spoke with Clint Buchholtz who said that the packing of o bait herring will end at the end of February. V.I. North Tourism re-ups with Mt. Waddington After two successful calendar years of operation, the Vancouver Island North Tourism regional destination marketing organization (DMO) has announced a three-year contract renewal with the Regional District of Mount Waddington, demonstrating their continued commitment to the end of 2014. Vancouver Island North Tourism congratulated Andrew Jones on his election as Chair for 2012 during the organization’s January meeting held in Port McNeill. “The Vancouver Island North region attracts visitors from around the world to enjoy diverse outdoor activities, view amazing wildlife and scenery, and immerse themselves in local cultures. The Vancouver Island North Tourism Advisory Committee (VINTAC) is compromised of a great group of local members who bring a wealth of knowledge
and experience to the table.” says Jones. “I am honoured that the committee has chosen me as chair and look forward to our ongoing work to promote and enhance tourism in our great region.” Funding support from Island Coastal Economic Trust and Coast Sustainability Trust were instrumental in the start-up strategy for regional tourism on the North Island. The Regional District of Mount Waddington has provided funding and continues to support the establishment of regional tourism. The Additional Hotel Room Tax has been in place throughout the region since January 1, 2010 and will continue to provide a consistent source of revenue to fund the initiatives of this project. Many successful projects were completed in 2011, continuing consistency in design and messaging for Vancouver Island North as a tourism destination. Promotion
of the regional tourism website, launched in 2010 (www. vancouverislandnorth. ca), nearly doubled visitor traffic to the site in 2011, and Vancouver Island North Tourism’s partnership with the North Island Gazette continued to produce the 2012 Vancouver Island North Visitors Guide. The Visitors Guide is distributed on BC Ferries major routes between Vancouver Island and the lower mainland, the Inside Passage, WOOD STOVES and Discovery Coast & INSERTS routes. In 2011, over

What is confusing is that there are three different cholesterol numbers to understand. Phil, 63, was in a similar situation. These are the numbers I want Phil to know regarding his cardiovascular risk. Other numbers he should know are his PSA prostate specific antigen numbers so that he can monitor his numbers over the years – but prostate health is another topic. Phil sure knows his numbers now and is feeling much better for it. He is not only preventing diabetes and heart disease but protecting his brain as well.
