CelliantÂŽ has been proven in clinical tests to reduce pain, increase oxygen levels, and help balance body temperature. Each of these results can have added beneďŹ ts including faster healing, increased performance, better-quality sleep, and improved overall wellness all of which can help alleviate the symptoms of arthritis and peripheral vascular disease often associated with diabetes.

PROCESS

The key to CelliantŽ lies in it’s ability to absorb and store the electromagnetic (energy) emissions from the human body and release them where they are reabsorbed into the skin and deep muscle tissue. In the deep muscle tissue they act as catalysts for natural, biological processes resulting in enhanced oxygen levels and more balanced body temperature during sleep, rest or physical activity. CelliantÂŽ converts the energy into a form usable by the body.

CelliantÂŽ recycles this energy back to the body.

This recycled energy triggers natural chemical reactions in the body.

These reactions result in increased blood ow and oxygenation to the tissue.

Music Fest keeps rollin’ along

FLYERLAND

Mark Allan Black Press COURTENAY — Vancouver Island MusicFest took a financial hit last year, but it was strong artistically and will continue to be again this year, says a key figure. “We lost some money last year because of our Thursday night experiment with Alison Krauss,” artistic director and executive producer Doug Cox admitted in an interview. “But we had some money in the bank and we’re not in debt to anybody and we’re still fully-functioning,” he stated. “Reputation-wise in the music industry, we’re recognized as one of the top festivals in North America and one of the festivals that premiers a lot of bands that go on to play other festivals after ours.” In fact, Cox said, his counterparts from other festivals scout MusicFest for talent. “We continue to bring in world-class acts in a community as small as the Comox Valley, which is almost unheard of.” He believes MusicFest is the largest music festival on Vancouver Island and one of the largest in B.C. Besides being a busy touring musician, Doug Cox is the artistic director and executive producer of the Vancouver Island Music Festival. Photo submitted among the media, Cox added. “CBC does more recording at our festival than any other festival in Canada, and we have a lot of people from the music world who come to our festival every year now.” Holger Peterson, veteran owner of Stony Plain Records, who has a weekly Saturday night music

show on national CBC Radio, comes to MusicFest every year. “He calls it his favourite festival; he’s told me that many times,” Cox said. “He’s an ex-festival programmer himself. For me, personally, it’s always a real thrill to have people like that come to our festival and say we’ve got some of the best

programming they’ve ever seen and some of the best workshops they’ve ever seen.” Workshops are essentially programmed jams in which Cox matches sometimesdisparate styles by people who often have never played together in the hope that an exciting new musical collaboration will Cont. on Page 4

every year depends on the availability of musicians. He has tried for years to land certain acts before doing so and, of course, always has an evolving wishlist. Cox said festival organizers have decided that 10,000 tickets sold over three days is the optimum number for a successful festival in its current site. He estimated MusicFest was 700 short of that number last year. “Our goal is to make the festival financially solvent and responsible but not to grow the festival, he summarized. “It’s an interesting dilemma because most

people measure success in North America is through growth. Even some of our funders (say), ‘What are you doing to increase your numbers?’ We are a non-profit organization, but we don’t want to make a killing. That said, Cox hinted MusicFest will tighten its operations this year to avoid the financial loss of 2011. Acts announced so far for the 2012 festival July 6 to 8 at the Comox Valley Exhibition Grounds include k.d. lang, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Matt Andersen. For more, visit www. islandmusicfest.com

The Historic Halbe Hall Control of Historic Halbe Hall will be transferred from School District 71 to Black Creek Old Age Pensioners Organization (OAPA) Branch #126 on Feb. 17 during a celebration at 2:30 p.m. In the early 1900s, north of the settled land in the Comox Valley, stretched old growth forest waiting to be harvested by the Comox Valley Logging & Railway Company. Gradually, logging moved north of Merville to the Oyster River where camps were set up to house loggers and their families. The most northerly camp (Camp II), located near the Oyster River warranted a school in 1924. A 20-foot by 20foot building was built which housed a school for Miss Made Daneils and her 18 students. The students were required to do janitorial duties as Miss Daniels salary of $96 took all available funds. In 1929, the school was moved down the Oyster River to a location opposite the Fisherman’s Lodge. Students came from as far north as Storries

learned their “3 Rs.” Judges, teachers and ministers can trace their early schooling to this small school. The students all fondly remember the horseCont. on Page 6

We’re enjoying ‘Happy Trails’

... Thanks to You!

Members of the Vancouver Island Chapter of Back Country Horsemen of BC (BCHBC) extend heartfelt thanks to the many businesses and individuals in the Comox Valley and Campbell River areas who so generously donated products and services for its Annual Christmas Party in December. Over $2200 was raised through the silent auction and gift basket draws, thanks to this generous community support. Money raised at BCHBC events goes towards on-going trail maintenance and development of multi-use recreational trails in the Comox Valley Regional District and surrounding areas. These wonderful trails are enjoyed by horses and riders, cyclists, joggers, dog walkers and more!

2X14 Fishing 2X14 Corner with Don Daniels email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com The local anglers are combining prawning and fishing and the reports say lots of undersized salmon are coming in and anglers are working hard to get a keeper. On any given weekend the public boat launch located across from the Bigg Rock Motel cross fro in Campbell River will have anywhere from 6 to 10 vehicles parked and the anglers are heading out to the usual spots: Cape Mudge Lighthouse, the Hump and Willow and Shelter Point areas. Some dogfish have Plugs been caught on herring and anchovies, hovies so plugs and spoons can be used to fish and keep the dogs off the line. I have been in contact with fishing lodges in British Columbia and there certainly is a connection with Campbell River. Twenty nine years ago, Doug Rogers started his own charter business in Campbell River. What began as Shoreline Charters, with one Boston Whaler and one guide (Doug), grew into Anchor Inn Charters with 17 boats and guides. In 1993 Doug set up camp at Nootka Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The next season the camp was moved to Zeballos Inlet, accessing the more remote and productive, Esperanza area. The bulk of fishing customers are split 50/50 Canadian and American customers. With the increased regulations forcing charter operations off shore, more time is sspent fishing for halibut aand other species of bbottom fish than ever before. Based on a 10 be hour h day, the cost is approximately $100 per a t Moun t Halibu hour. If you plan to do ho some freshwater fishing the consistent producers of big trout is Comox lake and the Upper Campbell. The Gold River can be a very nice spot to fish this time of year and water levels can make or break a fishing trip to this area. Water condition reports are good on the Gold Upper Campbell River, followed by the Salmon River and the Oyster River. Last Saturday I spent an afternoon at Tyee Marine in Courtenay to speak with the staff about fishing the local lakes and will report news next week. A couple of interesting lakes are producing fish if you are able to cast a fly and enjoy an afternoon of fishing; weather permitting.

While the Mennonite children were in the majority, they were soon joined by the new arrivals in the Macaulay Road settlement and many who took up farming and dairy enterprises in this area. Many of these returned as veterans of the Second World War.

The new Black Creek school, located on Ployart Road, was started in 1958 with two classrooms, service areas and covered play area. Both schools were used during this period, even when in 1965, two classrooms and an activity room were added in the new Black Creek School. In 1971, the last students moved from the Old Black Creek School to the new school on Ployart Road and the first school was closed.

In 1973, a group met at the home of Olliver Travis to discuss the forming of a Black Creek Old Age Pensions group, at which time a charter was applied for. At this first meeting, Jack Macauley reported that he had been contacted by a School District 71 with regard to renting the old Black Creek School. After many discussions at numerous meetings, the decision was made on Sept. 10. 1974

to apply for the old school. A 10-year lease was agreed to on the condition their group would maintain the building and at the Nov. 19, 1974 meeting, a letter from SD71 was read confirming the lease of the old primary school. On Jan. 14, 1975, the first meeting of the Black Creek OAPO #126 was held in that building and on Feb. 11, 1975, it was decided that it be called Halbe Hall in

recognition of Halbe’s donation of the land. The official opening of Halbe Hall was in the spring of 1976. During the 33 years that the Black Creek OAPO #126 has leased Halbe Hall from SD71 we have enjoyed social events, dances, whist, bingo, crafts, are classes, darts, pot luck suppers and lunches, regional OAPO summer picnics etc., as well as meetings of community Cont. on Page 11

Eagles celebrate 60 years The Campbell River Fraternal Order of Eagles Club recently celebrated its 60th anniversary of people helping people in our community. The anniversary was commemorated by giving away more than $12,000 to various local organizations including the Food Bank, Search and Rescue, Firefighters Burn Camp, Ann Elmore House, Men’s 2nd Chance, Radiant Life, Meals on Wheels, the Soup

Kitchen, Salvation Army, Women’s Centre and the RCMP Dare Program. In the past year alone the Campbell River Eagles have donated more than $90,000 to various charities from money they’ve raised volunteering to do catering and many other fundraisers. “It feels great to be a part of this wonderful group of people,” said Marlene Jordan, Ladies’ Auxiliary President. “Watching our efforts pay off and

being able to help groups and individuals less fortunate every month is so rewarding.” Since becoming a chartered club in 1951, the Eagles’ accomplishments included being the first organization to start bingo in Campbell River, putting on a free annual seniors lunch (typically attended by 275 or more 70-plusyear -olds) for the past 54 years, hosting Halloween parties and other annual events

for people with special needs and hosting the annual Friendship Bazaar for the past 30 years. In recent years the club has also directed its time and resources to help out School District 72 by supporting the lunch programs at Cedar, Ripple Rock and Pinecrest Elementary Schools, and organizing annual gingerbread decorating events which have benefitted hundreds of children. “It’s amazing what

a small, committed group of caring people can accomplish when their hearts are in the right place,” said Maureena Wilson, Ladies Auxiliary Secretary. If 2012 is the year to begin making a positive difference in this community for you, give them a call. New members are always more than welcome. For membership details please call Marlene Jordan at 250286-3171 or e-mail foe3097@telus.net

to hold a lease with the school district on a yearly basis with the proviso that on their decision, the property could be offered for sale, giving the OAPO six months notice to vacate. The building is

more than an old school but provided a centre of learning for the local population which included teaching English to newly-arrived settlers whose mother tongue was German. Teachers who

taught found the children eager to learn, polite, helpful and had a gift for singing. Although students in the early days did not have the amenities of today, they enjoyed freedoms missing from our present society.

We care about our community and are looking for the best to carry out our mandate.
