Preschoolers celebrate Ukrainian New Year with a musical charity event Don’t put your party dress away yet! Preschoolers and their parents/caregivers are invited to join TreeFrog Music to celebrate the new year (Ukrainian New Year, that is) 10 to 11:15 a.m. on Fri., Jan. 13, at a Music Together Jam Party. We’ll be dancing and singing, moving and shaking, banging on drums and then celebrating with a little treat. Current and former students, friends, and any folks interested in finding out more about Music Together– an internationally recognized early childhood music and movement program – are all welcome. Admission is by donation of cash, nonperishable food and clean, gently used toys and household items for the Comox Valley Transition Society. The Transition Society supports women and children who have to make a new start due to domestic violence. They offer counselling as well as practical
help, crisis assistance service and a safe house. Starting over from a safe base is very relevant to the fresh start of a new year, and TreeFrog Music is happy to support the Transition Society’s efforts to give a helping hand to families in need. TreeFrog Music is a local business that offers music lessons and Music Together classes, for kids 0 to 5-years-old, and the grown-ups who love them. These classes are fun and engaging explorations of tone and rhythm, singing, movement and sound. They are 45 minutes of pure fun with your child, and yet they build the foundations of future musical ability, as well as developing language and gross motor skills. This season, TreeFrog is adding the Abbey in Cumberland as a new site for Music Together classes. “The Abbey is an amazing space with great acoustics and lots of room to play,”
Treefrog director Kazimea Sokil says. A former pioneer era church, the Abbey is now privately owned and used for workshops and classes. It can be found at 2689 Penrith Ave. in Cumberland. Music Together classes will be held at the Abbey Fridays at 10 a.m., starting Jan. 27. Classes will also be held in Courtenay on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. at the Saltwater School, 2311 Rosewall Cres., starting Jan. 24. For information on registration, check the website. There is a discount for early registration, and the classes are filling up. Please RSVP for the New Years Music Together Jam Party by contacting Kazimea at 250-650-3738 or treefrogkaz@gmail.com For more information visit the TreeFrog website at www.treefrogmusic. ca or the Music Together site, www. musictogether.com Shchaslivoho Novoho Roku (Happy New Year)!

Fishing Corner
with Don Daniels email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com For saltwater anglers the month of December was limited to fishing due to high winds. The weather changed on December 27th, and the locals were out fishing and reporting good catches of fish. A lot of undersized winter springs are being caught fishing the ebb tide between the red marker buoy to the Cape Mudge Lighthouse. Undersized springs range from 20- too 22 inches. (You can keep the fish overr 24.5”). Some boats are catching fish 10 to 12 pounds using hoochies and spoons. Prawning can be very good at this time of year off the Francisco Point High water levels at Quinsam River at the bottom end of Quadra Island. The public boat ramp located across from the Big Rock Motel in Campbell River has been quite active on weekends. You can stop by this location and view the boats coming in w with their daily catches. I started off the new year s investigating the Quinsam in and an Oyster River. Water levels on the Quinsam le were high and the Oyster we River R was very low. Iw was able to speak with at least 3 fishermen who w were parked at the Local Angler on Quinsam River provincial park campsite and they all had good reports of fishing for cutthroat and steelhead trout. The banks and beaches are best fished from the park side and with low water conditions expected within the week, some ideal fishing can be had by all. At any given time on the weekends and during the week, the Quinsam River is very active with fly anglers both local and the guys who come up and fish after new years from around the island and the mainland. Many anglers are using 12 pound tippet and the few guys who frequently fish the Quinsam are going with light tackle and small hooks. Some are using 4 pound tippet with size 10 hooks. A very popular fly being used these days is a single egg pattern tied in various colours: pink, red or cheese colored. Many are adding a small bead to their Local student poster fly and experiencing some good results. I have even used a purple fly with a silver body that was effective on the Oyster this year.

Giving women the ability to cope with stress and chronic fatigue Lately I have been seeing more and more women in the 30-50 year old range who present with chronic fatigue like symptoms and no stamina to handle stress. They complain of anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, mood swings and depression but they want to avoid prescription medications that have either not been effective or have too many side effects. Jane, 42, was an example. She was irrationally very irritable with her children and felt she wasn’t coping well with the stresses of her full-time job and her responsibilities in the home. Her MD (doctor of medicine) had prescribed Celexa, but she didn’t like the side effects. A girlfriend had had success with a naturopathic physician for a similar complaint

I also reviewed with her my “Sleep Hygiene” protocols. ● I prescribed for her my female adrenal formula which contains ashwagandha, Siberian ginseng, astragalus and other herbs that regulate not only the adrenal glands but also the thyroid and the ovaries. ● I evaluated her blood work and found her to be anemic and slightly low thyroid for which I treated her. ● I evaluated her hormone status and found not only her adrenal function to be poor, but she had very low progesterone as well. ● The homeopathic evaluation of Rubimeds found her first remedies to be supportive of the adrenal glands and her inability to say no. ● I reviewed with her my “52 Stress Reducers” handout and counseled her on some initial changes to consider. the program. After one of my coaching sessions with her where I encouraged her to take better care of herself, she was able to incorporate some of Steven Covey’s approach from his book “First Things First”. Here are some of the changes she was able to make. ● She planned a long weekend every month to give her more time for self care. ● Her and her husband had a weekend to themselves giving them the time to plan their family holidays and activities for the coming year. ● Jane realized that she also needed to do a retreat on her own every year for regrouping. Just planning for this made her feel better! ● She hired a house cleaner to give her more down time on the weekends. ● She embraced some of the things she loved to do that had fallen by the wayside as she raised her young family. Jane is still healing. Just when she thinks she is doing better, she overdoes it and then crashes a bit. I have encouraged her to maintain on her remedies long term as it can take many months to heal. Jane is very happy to avoid the prescription medications and is feeling so much more in control of her life. Young photographer gets Ottawa gig J.R. Rardon Gazette staff PORT McNEILL—A local teen has parlayed a year-old gift into a prize-winning photograph and possible trip of a lifetime. Andrew Mitchell, 15, is one of 40 young photographers from across Canada who will have their work displayed at the famed Rideau Canal Skateway in Ottawa beginning later this month. His photo of a mist-shrouded Stubbs Island, taken last June during a boating outing with local biologist Jackie Hildering, was selected from nearly 300 entries in the National Capital Commission’s Eco Art contest. Mitchell was informed of his selection in early December. “I got an e-mail from them a couple of weeks ago,” Mitchell said in a Christmasweek interview. “I was pretty excited when I saw that. I ran around showing everybody.” Mitchell and his father, Scott, plan to travel to see the display this winter, though their itinerary has not been locked in. “They’re planning on an opening ceremony January 15, but it depends on the weather and the ice condition,” Scott Mitchell said. “We’re absolutely going to go. It’s just a matter of when.” The 40 finalists will have their photographs displayed on large, 8x8-foot boards in an exhibit to be erected where the Rideau Canal spills into Dows lake. The photos will be enlarged to 4.5 by 6.5-feet for the exhibit, which will greet skaters as they make their way from the canal to the lake on what the Guinness Book of World Records recognizes as the world’s largest skating rink. Mitchell, a grade
10 student at North Island Secondary School, had dabbled in photography through his youth, but began to get more serious about it after receiving a DSLR camera for Christmas a year ago. He entered his image after seeing an ad for the contest on his Facebook page. “It sounded pretty interesting,” he said. “It took me a while to pick my photo, though. I talked to my mom and dad, then I picked a bunch and put them on Facebook and asked people to kind of go through and pick which ones they liked the best. “I figured to get lots of opinions would work better.” His final choice was a photo taken in the early morning hours and shows Stubbs Island framed by a pair of seaweedcovered rocks with a tide flowing in the foreground. It is one of many images he has taken while boating with

other 39 entries in its starkness. While many of the photos feature brilliant colours, the gray sky and water of Mitchell’s coastal image lends it an almost black-andwhite appearance. There is a chance for the image to be further honoured through the Eco Art contest. Several of the photos will be moved for continued display through the summer in various locations in Ottawa. And the top three in judging to take place later this month will win photo equipment prize packages from Henry’s Canada ranging from $1,100 to $1,800 in value. It’s shaping up to be an interesting year for Andrew, who helps out as an assistant coach with his sister, Hannah,
for the Port McNeill Minor Hockey peanut program. After the trip to Ottawa, he is scheduled to travel to Costa Rica with his mother Alison and his siblings. In the meantime, he was hoping the recent Christmas holiday held some more photography presents in store, including photo editing software and a photography class. Mitchell has not yet committed to a career behind the lens, but expects to remain active with the camera going forward. “It’ll probably be a hobby,” he said. “Maybe it’ll be integrated into something else, but I don’t think I’d be like a full-on photographer. But you never know; you never know what’s gonna happen.”

Mae doesn’t sit around feeling sorry Don’t feel sorry for Mae Noble. She doesn’t feel sorry for herself. “Yes, I have Alzheimer’s disease. I hope it doesn’t progress too quickly, but if it’s going to happen it’s going to happen. I’ve been living well since my diagnosis two years ago, and I’m not dead yet,” she said with a smile on her face. “I’m going to continue with my half acre of garden plots, sailing with my husband and family, and enjoying travelling around in our motor home or little sports car.” My big goal is to educate others about
this disease and hopefully to be of help. Noble has been a hardworking woman all of her life. She worked as a cleaner at the Haida Inn for 35 years, and raised her close-knit family. Alzheimer’s disease has been a presence in her life for three generations. As a young child she remembers her grandmother having what was then described as ‘spells.’ Her mother was later diagnosed with the disease, as was Noble two years ago at age 76. Around the time of her diagnosis, her brother who was a

I spend a lot of time with my family and I laugh a lot.” She has three pieces of advice for others with Alzheimer’s. “Don’t waste time feeling sorry for yourself. Don’t let people take over the things you can do for yourself. Make certain that people know that you have Alzheimer’s. Ask for help when you need it, and if you mess up make a joke of it and keep going.” It’s no surprise that she has been chosen to be honoured this year by the Alzheimer Society of BC North Island Investor’s Group Walk for Memories. The Walk is the main fundraiser for the Society. “This is the first year that we are holding the Investor’s Group Walk for Memories in Campbell River, said Pat Redhead, co-chair of the fundraising Cont. on Page 11

BC Hydro warns customers to beware of telemarketers offering “Hydro Power Savers”
Walk for Memories set for January 29 Noble recalls the early days when she was helping to form an Alzheimer’s support group here in Campbell River. One of their prime fundraising efforts was to go to all of the garage sales in the area and pick up everything that wasn’t sold. Then Noble and her husband Bruce would take it home and have their own big garage sale to raise money for the new support group. The first expenditures were on books and educational materials. “There wasn’t a lot of information available back then.” she said. Noble will be recognized for her contributions to her community in Campbell River, her leadership and her work with the local Alzheimer’s support
From Page 8 walk that will take place on Jan. 29 in the Campbell River Common at 1 p.m. The North Island Walk which has previously been held in the Courtenay will now alternate annually between the two communities. “Mae has worked tirelessly as a community leader over the years,” Redhead said. “She helped start the Independent Order of Foresters Campbell River, was one of the founding members of the local Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group and was an active member of the Eagles. “She and her husband also undertook the mammoth job of organizing and running the local Salmon Festival one year.”

group, and for her courage and good humour as she lives with her disease and as she helps others by sharing her experience. The North Island Investors Group Walk for Memories will be held indoors at the wheel chair accessible Campbell River Common on Sunday, Jan. 29, at 1 p.m. Registration starts at noon. There will be a clown and face painting for children and the young at heart, a square dancing demonstration, and a fun warm- up. It’s easy to register. Go to www. walkformemories. com or call 1-800667-3742. Let’s get walking for Mae Noble and the more 70,000 individuals and families in B.C. who are living with dementia.
BC Hydro is warning its customers to be aware of a potential scam this winter season where telemarketers claim to be calling from BC Hydro to sell energysaving devices called “Hydro Power Savers.” In some instances, telemarketers also incorrectly claim they are in possession of the customer’s power consumption information. BC Hydro does not endorse “Hydro Power Savers” and has seen similar potential scams in other provinces, including Alberta. In addition, customers’ power consumption information is strictly confidential and is not shared with third parties. As part of the calls, the alleged telemarketers are
reportedly claiming that the “Hydro Power Savers” can save customers money on their bills. Customers who have been contacted by telemarketers about “Hydro Power Savers” are encouraged not to enter into any agreement for purchase. The Better Business Bureau has included “power saving scams” as one of the Top Ten Scames for
2012. Customers who would like to file a complaint can visit the website of the Better Business Bureau serving Mainland British Columbia (BBB) at www.mbc. bbb.org or call the BBB at 604-682-2711,in the interior call, 1-888803-1222, and on Vancouver Island, call 250-386-6348. Biking behind the bamboo curtain A 25-year-old Campbell River resident is heading to Southeast Asia on a 10,000 km bicycle journey to promote sustainable living. Riding a bambooframe bicycle which he built himself, Derek Howlett plans to travel from Hong Kong to Mumbai this spring.
By camping and couch surfing, Howlett said he hopes to spend no more than $15 a month on accommodations. In addition, he will continue eating the raw, vegan diet which he currently follows and promotes. “The purpose of this trip is to raise
as much awareness around healthy living and living sustainably,” Howlett explains on his website unrealliving.com. “The plan for this trip is to maintain a 100 per cent raw vegan diet, eating as much local and organic fruits and vegetables as possible.”
