email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com So far in the month of January you can count the decent fishing days on one hand. We have less snow this year than last but the wind and rain have been a problem. I was driving past Discovery Pier and noticed a family fishing, so I stopped in and talked with Marty Dubitski and Kelly Conroy. The party of four had been fishing for a couple of days and a halibut was caught the day before. Marty, who fishes the pier quite often, also hooked a fishing rod that was dropped never ropped and lost. You nev know what can be caught at the pier. The wife of one of the anglers said they fish even on bad weather days and she keeps warm with a blanket while her husband fishes.

If you’re fishing the lakes, the th best way to catch fish this time ti of year is to cast spoons from fr shore. If your lake has a cr or stream entering it, try Kelly Conroy Fishing on Discovery Pier creek fishing near the drop off point and hope for a strike. Consistent producers of fish are Comox Lake near Courtenay and the Upper Campbell near Campbell River. When the cold snap hits the Campbell River ver area, one of the lakes that can freeze over is Echo Lake. In some years people would skate andd ice fish on the same day. It has been a few years since Echo has been ice covered. Remember at this time of year, upper elevation lakes will be harder to get to. Fishing spot at Gray Lake Saltwater fishing has been good around Shelter Point and at the Lighthouse using small Tomic plugs without the use of flashers. This is a very good time to get out prawning. Watch for the boats heading out to the east side of Quadra Island around Marina Island. Some closures are in effect. Crabbing has been good at Tribune Bay in the Comox area. This bay is shallow with a flat bottom. Coming to Campbell River? The 30th annual Filberg Festival is now accepting artisan applications Each year the Filberg Festival features more than 120 of the best artisans from across Canada. Booths nestled amongst the towering trees of the Filberg Park are full of hidden treasures and one-ofa-kind items, making the Festival a shopper’s dream. New for the 2012 Filberg Festival is the application submission from artisans will be done online. Deadline for submission is Friday Feb. 10. Each category submission gets an opportunity to explain their process in writing and to send in photos to show the range and variety of their work. Competition varies within categories, with jewellery being the most competitive.
There are no guaranteed spots year to year, and the mix of artisans changes annually. The festival attracts artisans from all across Canada. Criteria ● You must be the designer, creator or producer of your art or craft. ● You must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant. ● Your craft must be produced in Canada within the last year and not previously submitted. ● With the exception of furniture, all work must be for sale. Custom furniture orders may be taken and samples displayed. ● Food, beauty, body and scented items must provide four samples and a complete product price list. Preference will given to products that are mostly handmade

The Festival uses an anonymous jury process, meaning that jury members will not know the name of the artist submitting the work for consideration. Millen fundraised in the Valley to go to Taiji, Japan in early November to act as a Cove Guardian. “I won’t stop fighting for their lives until they can swim freely,” said Millen in an e-mail. “If I let myself think of what I’ve seen, dolphins being gutted alive, babies attempting to swim free only to be
dragged back in and stabbed to death, I can easily become overwhelmed.” Millen said when she watched The Cove, a 2009 Oscar award-winning documentary about the dolphin hunt in Taiji, she wanted to stop the fishing practice. Now, she said the number of dolphins killed per year has been halved, partly due to international pressure on the Japanese government over the past few years.
