The Salvation Army’s two Christmas fundraising programs brought in more money than expected, according to community ministries director Brent Hobden. “This (year) was substaintially better than last year,â€? said Hobden. “It was very exciting. We were so

happy to hear that.� Hobden said the local Kettle Campaign goal was $100,000, but over $117,000 came in. Nationally, the Salvation Army exceeded its goal $19 million, by raising $20 million. Also, its annual mailout campaign brought in $157,000 locally when the goal was $150,000. Requests for Christmas Hampers
were down in the Valley, with 655 hampers handed out – about 100 fewer than in 2010. Hobden said this is a good thing. “If we’re down in numbers for Christmas Hampers, that means less families or less individuals in the Valley are needing a Christmas Hamper so we’re quite encouraged by that,� said Hobden. However, numbers for First Insurance’s
Secret Santa program were up, meaning more needy children were signed up for the gift program. “It was our biggest year ever,� said organizer Pamela Jolin. “We had 887 children between here and Campbell River. That’s over 100 more than we’ve ever had before.� Jolin said the large response could be due to the program gaining Cont. on Page 4

Metheral. The Comox Valley Food Bank handed out close to 1,000 bags of food during December, which was a “slight increase” from December 2010, according to president Jeff Hampton. He said December donations were on par with 2010, but while donations typically taper off in the New Year, they have remained steady this year. “I think that awareness is there now,” said Hampton.

Fishing depth is between 150 and 250 feet of water. This time of year many fishermen prefer not to use flashers. Spoons and hoochies are Salmon & Prawn catch getting fish. Prawning has been very productive along the back side of Quadra Island, check for season area closures. There are a number of fishing guides who fish all year long and their goal is to catch fish for their clients and keep them warm in the boat. The weather is cooler but the fish still bite and the boat th heaters are on. he

Each week I get a number of Ea phone calls and emails from ph people pe who are new to the Campbell River area wanting to Ca know where is the best place to kn Trevor & Tristen Moon fish with my kids? The area has fresh water and saltwater fishing and the key is getting out with the kids and keeping them busy with fishing tactics and having fun. I spoke with Larry Stefanyk, publisher of Island Fisherman Magazine, who has a program that caters to young and old. His class runs on Mondays from 4 to 6 pm and 7 to 9 pm here in Campbell River. You may want to learn how to tie a Black Leech fly pattern or learn about gear and how to tie knots. Contact Larry at ifmm@shaw.ca The Pacific Salmon Foundation fundraiser dinner and silent auction is coming up on February 4th at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Hall. This is the third annual Pacific Salmon Foundation dinner in Campbell River and last year more than 200 people attended. Just before the snow started to fall last week I drove to the Oyster River to check water levels and thee fish are biting. Al Thompson, Jr. manager at the Fishermen’s lodge,, reported a 9 pound cuttie hooked below the bridge. The days are starting to get
