Gardens provide... ...a natural backdrop for the creations of talented artists & artisans The Artisans’ Festival has become one of the highlights of the outdoor festival season in the Comox Valley. Bringing together some of the very best artisans, artists and craftspeople in a unique setting makes the Festival one of those events that becomes part of the “must see and do” calendar. While the over 24 acre gardens are a draw unto themselves, when you add in over 70 artisans, a host of musicians playing at different locations, some food and refreshments, the gardens become a destination that will appeal to a variety of interests.
Once visitors pass through the arbour gate, they enter a very different world where shopping for unique treasures becomes an experience. A quick review of the exhibitors list reveals that there literally is something for everyone. From high quality glass, pottery and jewellery to works of art created out of stone metal and wood, the artisans come from communities just around the corner to the other side of the Rocky Mountains. In addition to the artisans there are a number of musicians who help round out the Festival experience. From the unique sounds of Leo Gosslin’s 12 string sound board to songs sung by “We Put You At Ease Before You Get The Keys!” perennial favorites like Jorge Alfaro, Bruce and $25 Buyers Bucks Judy Wing, Norbury Coupon and Finch and the Many Waters Band.

But what is a Festival without food to tempt your palate? This year something new has been added by the Gourmet Girls Global Catering who offer a selection of foods from around the world. When you add this to the Garden’s popular selection of locally made smokies, smoked salmon on a bun, hot dogs and Bev’s famous carrot cake, eating in the great outdoors goes far beyond marshmallows on a stick. With the Festival being the focal point of the weekend, visitors are encouraged to take in all that the gardens have to offer. There are quiet pathways that lead through the forest down to the babbling waters of Kitty Coleman Creek or off to the labyrinth where they can find a little bit of serenity and harmony. One thing to remember as you take in the gardens is that they are the creation of one man, his family and friends who have tilled the soil, planted thousands of flowers, shrubs and strategically placed fountains and unique garden features so that all can enjoy nature in a more natural setting.

Sandra CAILLET
Sandra Caillet was born and raised on a farm in Nanaimo B.C. where she developed a love for the outdoors, including a great interest for trees. She remembers seeing images and having ideas for creating with wood as a young girl. Sandra moved to Courtenay in 1990. The wish for some deck chairs, was the inspiration to try her hand at building rustic furniture. She has been building ever since, more that 20 years. Sandra is self taught and her work includes chandeliers, bentwood chairs, children’s chairs, coat racks, tables, stools, driftwood sculptures, glass etching, and tree topiaries.

Joe SMITH Featured Artist
Creating a niche by painting the familiar.
Joe Smith, who has exhibited in every one of the Artisans’ Festivals is one of the Comox Valley’s better known fine artists. Coming from the eastern part of Canada, he has carved out niche for himself by focusing on painting west coast landscapes in a realistic style. Working with watercolors and acrylics, Joe paints many of his scenes from vantage points that are familiar to many. In fact he says that quite often people can stand on the same spot that he used to get his inspiration. Along with painting landscapes, Joe takes on commission work. Over the year’s he has painted dozens and dozens of home portraits, pleasure boats, commercial boats, places of business and historic landmarks. Some of his works can be found in public collections but most find their way into private and corporate collections.
In his artist’s bio notes, Joe says that he strives to paint a moment in time that has meaning to the viewer. Whether it is a field of flowers, sea stacks along the coast or a spectacular sunset, he says that he tries to conjure up a memory in the viewers mind that will help them remember a special time or remind them that there is tremendous beauty in the world that surrounds us. “If my paintings help people conjure up fond memories or better appreciate nature, then I feel they have done their job.” says Joe. Lee Gass carves stone sculptures in his Quadra Island studio, and produces bronzes from those originals. Represented by the Petley Jones Gallery in Vancouver and his own website (www.leegass.com), his works are found all over the world. Lee’s participation as a Featured Artist in this year’s Kitty Coleman Festival is a celebration of the wellmade object, not just by those who call themselves artists but by anyone who makes anything to high

standards of design, craftsmanship, and sometimes even utility. That is the essence of artisanship, and according to famed Haida artist Bill Reid, truly great art is well made in the same sense in which a chair is well made, a quilt or handbag is well sewn or a wooden bowl is well turned. On that level, artists and artisans are in the same boat - - for their works to be recognized as excellent, they must be well made. The Kitty Coleman Festival is renowned for high quality, from furniture to fine art, and Lee Gass is proud to be among the exhibitors.
