Siblings reuniting after 49 years apart Kristen Douglas Black Press Judi Edgar, 59, last saw her brother when she was just 10-yearsold and he a teenager. Her last memories of him are not exactly pleasant, but she’s hoping to change that. Edgar, who lives in Campbell River, and her brother, Raymond Jonigkeit, a German now living in Denmark, have not seen or even really spoken, for 49 years. “Raymond was just a punk kid of 15 the last time I saw him,” says Edgar. “The next time will be one day after his 65th birthday. It’s a whole lifetime – we have 49 years of catching up to do.” Edgar and Raymond share the same father, Otto Jonigkeit, but

have different mothers. Edgar was born in Germany but after her parents divorced, Edgar and her mother moved to Canada. Otto, who worked as a carpenter, was married six times before he died. Edgar came from her father’s third marriage and Raymond and his sister, Rosita Tomich, were from Otto’s second marriage. The three siblings were reunited once, in 1962, when Edgar and her family were living in Cassiar, a small mining town in the mountains of northern B.C., now just a ghost town. That was the last time Edgar saw her brother and sister. “My last memory of Raymond is not

Since then, though, he’s become a big animal lover and has dogs and cats himself.” He also has a wife, a daughter, one granddaughter and one great granddaughter. “It’s going to be a huge reunion,” says Edgar. “They’re already digging a huge pit to barbecue a pig in.” Also at the reunion will be her sister Tomich, 62, who now lives in Perth, Australia and whom Edgar last saw 28 years ago before she was married and living in Port Alice. “Otto and Rosita were living in Tonga and they came up to visit me and asked me to go back with them,” says Edgar. “I had a husky that could not live in that climate and I didn’t want to leave him behind.” It was Tomich who planted the seed for Edgar’s visit to Rodekro, Denmark next month. “It was Rosita who initiated the reunion,” says Edgar. “She said

Colleges need culturally aware programs Scott Stanfield Black Press COMOX VALLEY — Dr. Evelyn Voyageur speaks with pride about North Island College, where she teaches First Nations Cultural Awareness and is the elder in residence. Speaking recently at the Comox Valley Aboriginal Health Fair at the K’ómoks First Nation Band Hall, Voyageur said she noticed a lack of cultural awareness in the curriculum when she studied nursing at the University of Victoria. “It’s a must that cultural awareness be included in the curriculum,” she said. As is cultural safety, where the client or patient is treated

equally to oneself, thereby creating a balanced relationship. “You have to shift a balance with your relationship with your client,” Voyageur said. “You have to know what a person went through.” Her experiences in a residential school in Alert Bay prompted Voyageur to ask questions: What, for instance, did colonization do to people’s health? “We weren’t empowered in residential schools,” said Voyageur, who notes college nursing programs are designed by people in Ottawa who did not attend residential schools. “How could these programs work?” A fan of

community-based programs, Voyageur said an important part of being safe is knowing who you are. At one time, she was “the biggest critic of our people.” But then, while working in northern Alberta, she attended an invaluable counselling program that helped her deal with issues, namely emotional and spiritual abuse, stemming from her residential school years. “I began to understand why our people are the way they are,” she said. “It’s a defence mechanism against the pain many of them are walking through today.” Health care workers in tune with cultural awareness can help ease the pain through

Roadshow or circus? Cell phone test awed New York I sincerely hope that very few people fell for the recent hype surrounding the apparent ‘Roadshow’ which visited our fair Valley. In fact, I had several calls over the last week from people who attended the Canadian Collectors Roadshow event in Courtenay asking me if the ‘collectors’ were connected in any way to the TV show. To clear up some of the confusion surrounding the event I must make the following comments. The band called ‘Canadian Collectors Roadshow’ has nothing to do with the longstanding TV show the ‘Canadian Antiques Roadshow’. The people who came to town were a band of travelling dealers who roam Canada looking to pick and choose antiques and collectibles. Essentially, they were a private business whose main line is that of purchasing valuables from unsuspecting and naive sellers. The fact they advertised themselves to be appraisers was totally misleading in that they were not providing legitimate appraisals but were making offers to purchase. As many of the regular readers of this column will know, a Professional Appraiser would never make an offer to purchase anything they appraise as it would be a direct conflict of interest and goes against our voluntary code of ethics. Additionally, any appraisal given at such events would not be valid for the purposes of an insurance claim unless it is accompanied by a full written description of the item in question and, ideally a photograph. Nor is such an appraisal useful if you are hoping to establish the true market value of an object or collection (as the ‘appraisal’ at these type of events is usually verbal).

As full-time professional appraisers, we follow the same principles in our business lives as when we are on the show; what you pay for is our experience and expertise knowing that because we are not offering to buy from you we are not ripping you off as we have nothing to gain other than our well-earned consultation fee. When we do appraisals for the TV show we are bound by our code of ethics to be independent and objective as to a piece’s value, age, authenticity, rarity and market (or insurance) value. While clients on the show are given a verbal assessment (opinion of value), they are often advised to consult with a professional appraiser and get a formal written appraisal. An appraisal, in its most basic form, is an opinion of value. Amongst other criteria, this opinion of value is based not only upon years of experience but also on knowledge of the current market conditions, strength of demand, and comparative values of prices realized for similar pieces over

Q. Who invented the cellphone and when and where? A. Martin Cooper, then an engineer at Motorola, invented the first hand-held cellphone in 1973, says “ScienceIllustrated.Com” magazine. The model weighed more than two pounds and had many thousands of component parts squeezed in. As late as 1983, a Strange but portable hand-held True phone cost about $4,000. Standing on a Manhattan sidewalk, Cooper placed his first call to his rival, Joel Engel, whose team was also trying to invent a mobile phone for Bell Labs. “As I walked down the street talking on the phone,” he remarked, “sophisticated New Yorkers gaped at the sight of someone actually moving around while making a phone call. Remember that in 1973, there weren’t cordless telephones, let alone cellular phones. “I made numerous calls, including where I crossed the street while talking to a New York radio reporter--probably one of the more dangerous things I have ever done in my life.” Send STRANGE questions to brothers Bill and Rich at strangetrue@cs.com

story is this: If you want to sell your treasures, think twice before letting them go to some guys who were just passing through. Consider instead getting even a basic, informal appraisal from either a professional appraiser or a local established dealer. For a few bucks most will be only too happy to have you consult them so that at least you have a clue as to an item’s value. Above all, remember the old adage; “a free verbal appraisal is not worth the paper it is written on - it’s worth what you paid for it.”

Don’t waste your time on a job you hate Life is too short to waste your time and energies with a job you don’t love. And yet compared to the amount of time, money and effort we put into education and training, how much time do we really spend learning about what really drives us? Or about what job search strategies are most effective when you’re not just looking for any old job, but in finding or creating work that’s right for you? In the 21st century, traditional job hunting skills are still

required but because of widely accessible technological tools, they are no longer sufficient. Don’t panic! Updating your job search strategy so that it’s effective in the 21st century does not mean starting at square one. If you’re already conducting a job search, here are three “tweaks” you can make to increase the effectiveness of the efforts you’re putting forward. Bonus points if you’re already doing them. Don’t spam out your resume to every

job opening you see. Remember, you’re looking to find work that you love – not just any old job. It’s not unusual for employers to receive hundreds of applications for an advertised opening, meaning that applications not targeted to the specified requirements are often filed in the recycle bin. While sending out tons of resumes and cover letters might make you feel good, if they’re not targeted, you’re wasting your time and money. The old adage, “it’s

not what you know, it’s who you know” has validity. It always has because we choose to do business with or hire people that we know, like and trust. Think about the hiring situation from the employer’s viewpoint. Would you be more comfortable hiring from a stack of 300 resumes sent by people mailing out resumes to every available job opening they could find or from a lead given to you by a trusted colleague or employee who knows both the workplace and the skills and

aptitude of the person world of careers and being referred? Now, work.
