Invasive Plant Council gets a helping hand Invasive plants are silently invading spaces and landscapes around our communities. The majority of invasive plants are spread by people who don’t realize the large economic losses they create each year, nor the impact on our natural ecosystems.
By working together across boundaries, the Take Action program will provide employment that will reduce the losses to our local areas. The key focus for Take Action teams is to work with local community members to stop the introduction of new
species to the area. In Canada, over 60 per cent of invasive plants are often introduced by people who are not aware of the impacts of “hidden travelers? on boats and tires or within bird seed and wildflower mixes. Many of BC’s most “unwanted” invasive
plants were actually intentionally planted to beautify backyards or city parks and are today’s invasive headaches. Take Action teams will be placed in communities to identify and remove priority invasive plants before they become established.

It’s a great organization,” Cagna said, adding that Special Olympics pays for coaches’ certification and that volunteers’ costs are covered by Special O. “I came into this organization thinking I was going to give so much — it gave tenfold back. “I think every sport, every athlete, should come in and volunteer for Special Olympics and see what the meaning of true sportsmanship is. It’s just amazing.” CVSO has 80 athletes this year and Cagna said that is about average. However, there is nothing average about the athletes, who have
succeeded on the local, provincial, national and international stage. “We have two athletes going to the Special O. Worlds in Athens (June 25 to July 4) – Mary Wells for track and field and Chris Roberge for softball. Then we have Kerri Derringer going to Western Canada Summer Games (Aug. 5 to 14 in Kamloops) in swimming.” Special Olympics BC notes Derringer will compete in the Special Olympics division and is one of only two females from B.C. who will do so. This is a national annual awareness initiative to teach members of the community about naturopathic medicine, health promotion and disease prevention. Over the course of the week naturopathic doctors across Canada will be providing open house clinic hours as well as public workshops and lectures on topics such as the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. This is to educate the public on the benefits of naturopathic

Mother’s Day is a great chance to give thanks and appreciation to all mothers, including Mother Nature. Join the Black Creek Community Association (BCCA) for the first-ever Mother’s Day Walk in Black Creek on Sunday, May 8, 2011. Local naturalist, Betty Brooks, will be leading this unique walk on the local “Pub To Pub Trail” this Mother’s Day at 1 p.m.
Carpooling will be arranged to the trail prior to the walk start time. During the walk, Betty will point out spring flowers and birds throughout the trail. The walk is suitable for families; parents must accompany and supervise their children while en route. The walk will last approximately two hours. The event is by donation. A collection jar will be available at
the start of the walk. Event preregistration is required by Wednesday, May 4. To register, please call the BCCA office at 250-337-5190. PORT McNEILL – Colin Vicious, aka Colin Minihan is premiering his first full-length feature film at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York this week. Minihan, a graduate of North Island Secondary, started making short films while still in high school. Now eight years later and aged 25, he has several accomplishments to his credit including film festival accolades and music videos. His latest venture is a horror film titled Grave Encounters, directed by the Vicious Brothers, Colin and friend Stu. The movie is about Lance Preston and the crew of “Grave Encounters”, a ghost-hunting reality television show. They are shooting an episode inside the abandoned
last year and the postproduction work was completed “almost entirely in the Vicious Brothers living room with their computer hooked up to a 50-inch plasma on the wall.” “The film is presented as being genuine “found footage” of a television crew’s horrifying paranormal experience, along the same lines as The Blair Witch Project or Paranormal Activity,” said the directors’ notes for the film. “Everything is seen from the viewpoint of the crew member’s individual video cameras.
