Canadians urged to turn off the TV Fishing and enjoy an unplugged family dinner On Thursday, M&M Meat Shops is encouraging Canadians to turn off the TV, log off from their computers and power down cell phones and participate in the Seventh Annual National Family Dinner Night that celebrates what matters most - spending quality time with family and friends. The importance of family dinners reaches far beyond simply sharing a meal together. Research shows that gathering

around the table presents a valuable opportunity to interact, strengthen relationships and affirm the value of every individual in the family and their role in their community. Unplug and Tune In A recent national study conducted by Canadian Omnibus reveals that as we become increasingly immersed in the digital age, the intrusion of electronic communication devices during traditional times, such as family meals, is

spiralling. A shocking 80 per cent of Canadians admit to having at least one type of electronic communication device turned on and in use during family meals. More than half of Canadians (51 per cent) revealed that the TV stays on at mealtimes. While research shows the propensity to have these devices turned on during family meals, more than 81 per cent of Canadians say that they would enjoy

dinner more without these distractions; an indication that Canadians still hold this traditional event sacred and meaningful. “Sitting down for a meal together can have a lasting, positive effect on open communication between children and parents and reestablish a sense of family unity,” says Mac Voisin, Founder of M&M Meat Shops. “It’s time to unplug, at least during dinner, so that our electronic distractions don’t get in the way of this

with Don Daniels I had a chance this month to do some scouting for used ¿shing tackle. Some of the places I looked were garage sales, thrift stores and pawn shops. In Courtenay I came across an early turn of the century Peetz wooden reel on a cane rod that was hung up on display. The rod and reel is turn of the century, circa 1913, and is still usable. Coming back to Campbell River I checked out Crabby Bob’s by Discovery Pier and spotted old ¿shing plugs that were on display. With any old ¿shing tackle comes a story that can make the gear more valuable than it really is. Old copper and silver spoons may have been Peetz wooden reel, circa 1913 used by First Nations guides who provided guiding services to visiting ¿shermen on the Tyee Spit in Campbell River prior to 1904. On Discovery Pier you can rent a ¿shing rod and lure for 3 dollars an hour with a 5 dollar deposit and ¿sh off the dock alongside a great mix of locals and tourists. In general, ¿shing guides from Courtenay to Campbell River are reporting good catches of springs, with lots of pink and sockeye salmon. Beach ¿shing for pinks will start to pick up and the lakes are producing some nice trout. Minnow imitations are working well on most lakes and with the warm weather some nice catches of trout are keeping the anglers busy on most lakes in the area. Fishing information can be emailed to me at : dond@ campbellrivermirror.com. See you on the river!

This year, M&M Meat Shops urges everyone in Canada to register their participation and demonstrate the importance of getting together with the people who matter most in their lives. free yourself from all distractions, electronic or otherwise, so you can enjoy the undivided attention of those at the dinner table. Next time you get together for a family meal, ask everyone to sit down to eat without being connected to a single electronic device. “Research shows that when a parent unplugs, it makes a positive statement about how they truly care about connecting with their family,” says Voisin. “Having your device turned on during dinner only interferes with the close, personal connections you are hoping to nurture.” Ultimately, family dinners are about reconnecting — they are like mini family reunions, and a time

to share laughter, personal stories about your day and quality time with family and friends. So turn off your cell phone, log off from your computers and enjoy the evening of National Family Dinner Night: Thursday, September 15, 2011! Bringing Families Together for More Than 30 Years Since opening its first store in 1980, M&M Meat Shops, a Kitchenerbased business, has taken pride in offering convenient restaurant quality meal solutions that make family dinners and entertaining effortless and delicious. Abigail helps meet the need Black Press Before Abigail McCorquodale was even born, doctors knew she had a severe medical condition called esophageal atresia. The Port Hardy girl would need immediate medical treatment and a number of surgeries to correct the birth defect which resulted in the removal of a three-inch section of her esophagus. Abigail spent the

first 100 days of her life in the neonatal intensive care unit at Victoria General Hospital and in the last six years she’s returned for numerous surgeries – more than 30 – all of which were performed at VGH. Her mom, Brenda, stayed at the hospital with her throughout the ordeal, while her dad and two older sisters commuted back and forth from Port Hardy. The McCorquodale

family found there were no accommodations near the hospital and met many families from the North Island who were forced to stay in hotels and incur numerous expenses, such as eating in restaurants and the hospital cafeteria while they dealt with a family member requiring medical treatment. “We had to spend most of the first year of Abigail’s life at VGH,” said Brenda McCorquodale. “There were just no support services at all for families in the hospital.” When Jeneece Edroff, known to many as the Penny Girl after she raised $1.5 million in pennies for the Variety Club, was starting her new project, Jeneece Place, the McCorquodale family was in a position to speak to

her goal of raising $5 million to support the construction and first ten years of operating costs for Jeneece Place. “This facility is going to be a great asset to North

Island families and women with high risk pregnancies who need to spend time in Victoria,” said Brenda. “We can’t wait for the grand opening this spring.”

MidWeek / September 14, 2011

Challenging the body Capoeira in the Comox Valley has come a long way since its very humble beginnings only two years ago. Children and adults in the Valley have been drawn to the classes for different reasons. For the few that stick to this complex martial art, it has paid off in more than a few ways. Students have travelled as far as Calgary and Victoria this year to participate in the Axé Capoeira’s workshops and Batizado’s (belt ceremonies). A year of challenging the body, discipline and passion for the artform has earned local children and adults their first-

and second-level belts or cordas. The group plans a trip next year to capoeira’s birthplace, Brazil. The classes include martial arts training, conditioning, acrobatics and music, as well as Portuguese language and discipline. Capoeira is for everyone, but generally those with willpower, discipline and faith in themselves will learn with perseverance. The most important thing is to train and be consistent. Like anything in life, if you want to learn, you have to practise. Self-expression, confidence, strength, heart health and rhythm are among

many more benefits that capoeira can give anyone who joins. For the capoeirista, it is also that sense of community and family that draws one to the artform. Capoeira is a great excuse to get off the couch and into a healthy environment and into a true cultural experience with real people. Real interaction through percussion, music, acrobatics, fight and play can create meaning in one’s life and a general sense of well being, not to mention learning self-defence and accidentally picking up a new language. With crazy schedules, endless chores and problems

Youths involved in the Brazilian martial art Capoeira in the Comox Valley plan to visit the sport’s birthplace. in our daily lives, capoeira offers an escape to a cultural reality, and a healthy community. Through great physical fitness and self expression, we can free our mind and body in new ways. It’s a safe, drugfree environment for expression, fitness, concentration and challenge. No time? Science and nature discovery program The Courtenay Museum is once again offering the exciting, hands-on Science and Nature Discovery Program this fall. This innovative program is geared for home-learners, ages 5-12. Each class is comprised of interactive discussions and slideshows, handson activities and experiments, group activities, scientific diagrams and project creation! Children are encouraged to draw and label scientific diagrams and to read and write at their own personal levels. The group-learning atmosphere helps

students to build confidence in their social and public speaking skills, while the small class size allows the instructor to spend time assisting each student with their own particular needs. Due to overwhelming interest in the program, there are now a number of options for parents to choose from. Classes will begin Sept. 21. Classes run weekly from September to May and registration is ongoing. For more information, please see our website: www. courtenaymuseum.ca or call (250)334-0686

Golden toads just golden memories Kirsty Graham Special to Midweek Third in a series Imagine yourself on vacation in Central America. Like any holidaymaker, you want to send postcards, either with well-wishes to your loved ones or to gloat at co-workers less fortunate than yourself. You walk into a tourist shop and are confronted with a gaudy display of colourful postcards boasting the nation’s flora and fauna. You will doubtless see one particular postcard with an image of dozens of yellow frogs – the Golden Toad. Unfortunately, if this is the postcard that you chose, the recipient will open her mailbox to find the frozen image of an extinct animal staring back at her. Once abundant in Monteverde, Costa Rica, the Golden Toad has not been seen since 1989 and is now considered extinct. And the Golden Toad

is not just an isolated example – extinction rates for amphibians is at an all-time high. Another species, the national animal of Panama, the Golden Frog, now only exists in captivity. Many iconic frogs and salamanders are currently threatened. Amphibians are considered indicator species for the condition of their habitat, because they are very sensitive to changes. Tropical amphibians are faced with extensive habitat loss and complications due to climate change, notably the increased range of diseases. Conservation

of amphibians is challenging in the face of climate change, but steps can be taken to limit habitat loss. Central America continues to develop an extensive network of national parks, and most of the conservation effort must come from a governmental level. However, it’s important to be an educated traveller. Ask questions about the threats in the area. Save yourself the embarrassment of a friend calling you out on the postcard you sent - nothing says you’re lying about what you’ve seen like bragging about extinct animals.
