Tuition prize helps Campbell River Fishing Corner student off to great start at VIU Don Daniels with
When Josh McLennan paid his tuition at Vancouver Island University this month, it’s hard to say who was happier – Josh or his father. McLennan was the lucky winner of a $1,000 tuition credit offered as a special prize during VIU’s New Student Orientation. A graduate of Timberline Secondary School in Campbell River, McLennan is enrolled in VIU’s Bachelor of Arts, Major in Liberal Studies program. “I’m taking four courses and love it,” said the first-year student. “I chose to study Liberal Studies because of a Comparative Literature class I took in grade 12. We learned all about art, literature, philosophy and science from early times in the world’s history. I found it fascinating and thought VIU’s Liberal Studies program would be a good extension of that. I really enjoy learning about civilizations that existed long ago.” McLennan felt “awesome” when he was told he’d receive the $1,000 tuition credit. “I was pretty excited but I think my dad was even happier.” New Student Orientation is an annual event organized by the Recruitment and Public Engagement office of VIU’s Communications and Public Relations department. The next major event is

email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com n Sunday, October 26, I pulled into the Browns Bay parking O area at about 2 pm thinking the Charity Chum Derby was over. I headed towards the Marina office and starting talking with the staff who were getting the prizing organized for the reception tent. This year the reception tent saw Kenny Shaw entertain on Friday night, John Reynolds on Saturday night and the final prizes awarded Sunday afternoon.
Only Chum salmon are entered in the Derby and fishing is restricted between a line from Chatham Point to Howe Island and South to the hydro lines over the Seymour Narrows. Fishing took place from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm Saturday and 7:00 am to 12:00 pm Sunday.

First-year student Josh McLennan won a $1,000 tuition credit at VIU Discovery Days Nov. 8 to 10 at the Nanaimo campus which is geared to high school students currently in grade 12. The goal of Discovery Days is to connect grade 12
students with VIU so they can get a taste of what university might be like,” said Joanna Hesketh, Educational Partners Coordinator. For more information about Discovery Days, call

Doing science over the Internet Lindsay Chung Black Press COURTENAY — Can students participate in scientific experiments even if they aren’t in the room? Using the Internet and a Remote WebBased Science Lab (RWSL), they can, North Island College (NIC) distributed learning supervisor Albert Balbon demonstrated recently when NIC hosted the two-day North American Network of Science Labs Online (NANSLO) RWSL Workshop in Courtenay. Scientists and postsecondary curriculum designers from all over North America gathered at NIC’s Comox Valley campus to explore the use of the Internet to deliver university-level science courses. As architects of the technology supporting the RWSL project, having spent the past three years designing and building the prototypes, NIC’s own Ron Evans and Balbon were front and centre at the conference, demonstrating the technology — including the purposebuilt robotic arm — used to conduct laboratory experiments

Cooperative effort gets elk warning signs on Island Highway By Dick Gage The Sayward Fish and Game Association is pleased with the co-operation it has received with the installation of elk warning signs on Highway 19 from south of the Campbell River airport to the north of Woss Lake. Ministry of Environment (MOE) senior wildlife biologist and manager for Vancouver Island, Kim Brunt, and Ministry of Transportation engineers from Courtenay to Port Hardy joined up with the MOE staff to establish that the signs were required and in just over a couple of years of discussion, the locations were agreed upon and the signs were in place. North Island residents are probably familiar with most of the locations of the elk herds that have grown
in numbers with the aid of mild weather conditions in recent winters. It is estimated that at least seven herds are located between the Campbell River airport and the Sayward junction. Between 10 and 20 elk are killed annually between the Campbell River airport and Woss Camp. A fully-loaded ‘B train fuel truck rolled over south of Sayward early in 2011 when the driver tried to avoid killing a large bull. Highway 19 was closed for over 24 hours while the fuel was pumped out and the truck was put back on its wheels. The installation of warning signs should help to reduce the incidents and the Sayward Fish and Game Association wishes to thank the individuals and provincial agencies that made it happen.

BC FERRIES P/U AD The British Columbia Ferry Commission, the independent regulator of BC Ferries, has been mandated by the provincial government to review the Coastal Ferry Act and to make recommendations on potential changes to the Act which would better enable the commissioner to balance the financial sustainability of the ferry operator and the interest of ferry users. The commissioner has been conducting public consultation meetings in coastal communities served by BC Ferries and is inviting additional input on a number of key issues described in a series of discussion papers. These issues will be considered by the commissioner during his review of the Act and deal with interests of ferry users, financial sustainability objectives, the balance between the two, price cap regulation and cross-subsidization. Visit www.bcferrycommission. com/reports-press/whats-new/coastal-ferryact-review/ for copies of these discussion papers. Comments on these papers or any other issue relevant to the Coastal Ferry Act review can be e-mailed to info@bcferrycommission.com or mailed to BC Ferry Commission, RPO Hillside, Box 35119, Victoria BC, V8T 5G2. Campbell River resident receives BC Housing education award CAMPBELL RIVER – Campbell River resident Carly Lecuyer is a recipient of a BC Housing Education Award that will help her further her education, achieve her goals and improve her life. “The BC Housing Education Awards provide financial support for British Columbians working towards their academic goals,” said Rich Coleman, Minister of Energy and Mines and Minister Responsible for Housing. “This year’s award recipients are creating opportunities for themselves and the provincial government is proud to contribute to their future success.” “As a former teacher, I know full well the importance of education,” said Don
McRae, Minister of Agriculture and MLA for Comox Valley. “Carly’s initiative and drive to succeed are to be commended and I have no doubt she will be successful in her endeavours.” Anyone in British Columbia who is living in subsidized housing, or receiving rent subsidies through BC Housing’s Rental Assistance Program, is eligible to apply for the 98 bursaries and awards. The funds can be put towards tuition or other educational expenses such as books or supplies. For Lecuyer, the $750 bursary will help her pursue her bachelor of science in nursing, so she can become a registered nurse. “I was raised in a
single-parent home by my mom. While I admire her and am so blessed to have been raised by her, it was not easy to only have one parent providing for the family,” explained Carly. “By learning and getting an education, I will one day be able to support myself and my family. “This award allows me to fund my dreams.” Applicants submitted a personal statement describing their educational and personal goals, and challenges they have overcome, as well as letters of reference and academic transcripts. The BC Housing Education Awards Program offers five types of awards and bursaries: • BC Housing Bursary – 72 bursaries,
worth $750 each, to support youth or adults between 17 and 64 to pursue adult basic education, vocational education or postsecondary education on a full- or part-time basis. • BC Housing Award for Full-Time Studies – 10 awards, worth $1,000 each, to support youth or adults between 17 and 64 pursuing post-secondary or vocational education on a full-time basis. • Margaret Mitchell Outstanding Achievement Award – Margaret Mitchell was a dedicated housing advocate and helped develop the BC Housing’s Education Awards Program. This $750 award recognizes a youth graduating from Grade 12 for excellence in
academics, sports, the arts or community involvement who will pursue education or vocational training on a full-time basis. • Minerva Foundation Award for BC Women – There are five $1,000 awards to help Aboriginal women pursue fulltime, post-secondary education. This award is designed to help single mothers advance their education, assist women with children fleeing abusive relationships, retrain mature women returning to the workforce, advance women in non-traditional fields of study, and support women with disabilities to overcome educational barriers. • The Kinloch Education Award for
women – 10 awards at $1,000 each are awarded to women who may have overcome significant barriers in their lives which hindered their educational opportunities and who are now pursuing postsecondary education on a full- or part-time basis.
Over the last decade, the Province has invested $2.8 billion to provide affordable housing for low income individuals, seniors and families. This year, more than 95,000 B.C. households will benefit from provincial social housing programs and services.

After this period, interest starts to accrue and the purchaser will repay the principal interest monthly over the term of the contract. ††FlexChoice Financing for 36-, 48- and 60-month terms on approved credit through TD Financing Services is available at participating dealerships to qualified retail customers on select new 2011 and 2012 Kia vehicles. Taxes on the full negotiated purchase price are payable at the beginning of the contract term, resulting in higher payments than payments taxed on a periodic basis, and are not reflected in advertised payments. The following terms apply to TD Financing Services contracts. Vehicles are financed over a 36-, 48- or 60-month term with payments amortized over a term of up to 96 months and the pre-determined residual balance payable at the end of the contract. At contract’s end, customers have the choice of: (i) returning their vehicle through a Kia dealership with no further obligations (except payment of a $199 return fee and excess wear and tear, mileage and similar charges if exceeding 24,000 km per year allowance); (ii) financing the remaining balance for the rest of the amortization period at then-current standard rates; or (iii) paying the residual balance indicated on the bill of sale in full. Some conditions apply. FlexChoice Financing offered by TD in Quebec is subject to different terms and conditions. All advertised FlexChoice Financing offers are TD offers. Delivery and destination fees (up to $1,650) are included. Taxes, licence, insurance, registration, excess mileage, wear and tear charges, any retailer administration fees and other applicable fees and charges are not included. FlexChoice Financing is provided on approved credit through TD Financing Services. Your Option Date is set out on your TD Financing Services Payment Advantage Loan Certificate (the "Certificate"), which contains the terms and conditions governing your Return Value Option. professionals to help understand and cope with children’s needs. In its 19 years of existence, NIECDS has made a significant difference and earned the trust of the community. “We always get very high satisfaction rates from the parents,” Pinsonneault said.

Earl of Bute, who took a great interest in the mapping of the Northwest Coast. Included in the exhibit are superb photos from Judith William’s collection, and artifacts unique to the area. Many people will recognize the photo of the distinctive white wooden church that until recently stood
in the Homalco community of Church House at the entrance to Bute Inlet. Built in the early 1900s, the church recently succumbed to age, but the plaster Stations of the Cross that hung on its walls were rescued by Homalco parishioners. One of these is on display at the Museum. The Museum will
also add images from its own collections, notably those of the Schnarr family who lived in the Bute Inlet for many years. The three Schnarr daughters were famous for their pet cougars. The Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. For further information call 250287-3103.
