New mayor vows to shake things up KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Walter Jakeway says with him as mayor, the city can expect some big changes – just don’t expect them right away. “I’m going to shake things up,” Mayor-elect Jakeway says with a grin, just two days after an election that has thrust him into the spotlight. “It’ll be a new adventure.” His first task? To assign portfolios to all six of the councillors. “We want results,” Jakeway says. “They (councillors) need specific tasks, so then people in those areas know who to call.” His plan is to consult with each councillor and match them to their area of interest. Of course Jakeway has bigger plans, but it will take a while to get there. “People should not expect great change in the first 90 days,” Jakeway says. “I know the view on the inside is different from the view on the outside.” Jakeway wants to get the city’s financial house in order, but he thinks that particular task could take more than a year. “I suspect there are things there that shouldn’t be,” Jakeway says. “The first year will be finance. We need to find out how much money we’ve got, get the budget done early – earlier than last year. They sat there for a week last year, we don’t need to do that. We can make it fly faster than that. I’ve done budgets bigger than that before.” Jakeway, a husband and father of three adult children, owns his own small business and has served as an operations manager

for Pacifica Paper and NorskeCanada mill in Port Alberni, an engineering and maintenance superintendent at the Mackenzie pulp mill and, more recently, a project engineer for the Elk Falls pulp and paper mill in Campbell

River. In his new role, Jakeway says the most important thing will be to clean up the financial situation, in order to be prepared for a municipal audit that is expected sometime in the near future.

“The provincial government has appointed a municipal auditor so we need to make sure we’re ready and we’re not in for a surprise,” Jakeway says. He also stresses the importance of council to work together as a

team. “We need to get people together and unite everyone on council,” he says. “It’s like a football team. We have a few new players and a new coach, now we need to get Continued on A2

New mayor ‘came out of oblivion’ KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Walter Jakeway is Campbell River’s new mayor-elect after a tight race in last Saturday’s municipal election. Jakeway, with 2,741 votes, beat out current councillor Roy Grant by a margin of 39 votes and garnered 37.79 per cent of the popular vote in an election that saw a poor voter turnout. A total of 7,157, or about 30 per cent, cast a bal-

lot, down from the last election in 2008 when 9,534 people voted. Grant finished second with 2,702 votes (37.25 per cent) while fellow councillor Ziggy Stewart captured 1,228 votes (16.93 per cent), followed by Michel Rabu with 583 votes (8.04 per cent). While the face in the mayor’s chair will be different (Mayor Charlie Cornfield did not run for re-election), the rest of council will remain largely the

same. All four incumbent councillors were reelected, but it was a new candidate that received the most votes; Larry Samson, a for mer fire chief, was elected to council with 4,118 votes. Claire Moglove was returned to council with 3,904 votes as was Mary Storry with 3,753 votes, followed by Andy Adams with 3,581 and Ryan Mennie with 2,672. Ron Kerr, also new to council, surpassed Mennie in

votes with 2,726. Council candidate Jim Bifano, who stopped by Jakeway’s wrap-up party at Still Water Books and Art to offer his congratulations, said although his bid fell short, he was still pleased with the results. “I’m really glad (Jakeway) got in,” Bifano said. “For the first time I’m happy with the results.” Jakeway said he was also pleased with the outcome but was quick to point out there is a lot that needs to be done to get Campbell River back on its feet. “It’s good, but we have a lot of work ahead of us,” Jakeway said at Still Water, shortly after the elect i o n re s u l t s we re announced Saturday night. “We have to pull council together and work as a unit.”

Jakeway said he was impressed how people rallied around him. “I came out of oblivion,” Jakeway said. “I was a nobody who got in. Eight weeks ago people didn’t know who I was. “Talk about a squeaker though.” Grant, who finished just shy of Jakeway, said he thought himself right for the job but the voters wanted to go a different route. “I think I can hold my head up high and my shoulders are more square today because I’ve got a lot of weight off them,” said Grant, who spent the last nine years as a councillor. “I know I made a big contribution to my community and we’ve made a lot of progress in the past few years and at least I know I was a participant in that.” Grant said he’s look-

ing forward to leading a more normal life and going back to working full-time in real estate. “It’s a huge time commitment, it changes your life,” Grant said. “Now it’s going to be a totally different story.” But don’t expect Grant to completely disappear. He said he hopes to stay involved with the community and the city in some capacity, through volunteer work. “It’s going to be really different. I used to spend hours and hours reading the council agenda; one of the things I credit myself with was being really prepared and I asked a lot of questions before the public meetings,” Grant said. “When it came to things like conflict of interest, I always made sure I was squeaky clean.” Grant said council

will have a big job on its hands. “I wish the new council all the best – they’ve got a real tough time ahead of them,” Grant said. “I don’t think the general public knows how serious the next few years are going to be with trying to build up the tax base. Thank goodness there’s four incumbents in there, they bring a lot of wealth and experience to the table.” Council candidates not voted in: Jason Price-2,484 votes Dave Minato-2,016 Jim Bifano-1,883 Mark Sullivan-1,835 P a t r i c i a Gagnon-1,806 Sterling Campbell-1,718 Sean Smith-1,453 Darryn Striga-830 Peter Klobucar-558 Nehemiah Sloat-476 Brian Le Pas-409

He is also interested in taking another look at the Dogwood Street traffic lights. “Let’s try it for six months, back to the way it was,” Jakeway says. “But that’s just me – council has to agree. I’m not a dictator, I’m just the coach.” He is also considering putting a cap on the length of council meetings. “I don’t think a meeting should be more than two hours, that’s

He says he has seen overgrown hedges blocking sidewalks that should be dealt with. “We need to make sure bylaw enforcement is encouraged,” Jakeway says. “For some reason, it’s not happening.” Jakeway will take over the reins from Mayor Charlie Cornfield at the inaugural council meeting, Tues., Dec. 6.

No shortage of experience RENÉE ANDOR CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

While School District 72 will have some new faces on its Board of Education, the experience is there, said outgoing board chair Helen Moats. “I think it’s going to be a very interesting new board because I think six out of seven people have experience, have trustee experience, said Moats. “And the one person who doesn’t is a person who’s from the public education system. Trustees elected for Campbell River are: Joyce McMann (4,284 votes), Michele Babchuk (4,134 votes), Darryl Hagen (3,097 votes), Linda Jay (2,757 votes), and Ted Foster (2,687 votes). Barbara Bowbrick was acclaimed for the Sayward Valley seat, and Susan Wilson was acclaimed for the Quadra Island seat. Wilson is the one new trustee with no direct experience as

a trustee, however, Moats pointed out that she was a teacher in Campbell River for many years. Wilson said she looks forward to getting started on the board. “I’m not bringing specific issues with me at this time, but will do my best to deal with o n g o i n g a n d n ew issues in a collaborative, cooperative, and productive manner, said Wilson. Jay is new to this board but currently holds a seat as a faculty representative on Education Council, which is a co-gover nance body for North Island College (NIC). She said she wants to have open lines of communication with parents. “Most importantly, I want to set up an email or Facebook correspondence so that parents can write to me their concerns, said Jay. “My platfor m has been to be the ‘voice for parents,’ to bring their concerns to the table

and make the system accountable to them. Foster sat on the board from 2005-08, but narrowly lost in the 2008 election, and is delighted to be back on the board. He said preparing high school students for post-secondary trades training will be his main focus. “We can start in the high school level trying to orient children a bit towards trades or the opportunities that’ll be there, said Foster, pointing out an expected growing demand for skilled workers on Vancouver Island by 2019. McMann, Babchuk, Hagen, and Bowbrick were all incumbents in this election. Moats, who did not run for re-election, said that with a change over in most senior staff in school district administration over the last couple of years, the experience of the trustees will help guide the board in its decisions. “Continuity’s really important, just in

ter ms of car rying on the history, said Moats. “How did this decision get made and that sort of thing, and especially in a climate where there’s so many new senior staff members. McMann said the board will continue to work through issues, like advocating for stable government funding, the challenges of teacher contract negotiations, and preparing the district for the new configuration of schools. Warrren Harle was an incumbent who was not re-elected, but he said he is happy for the new board, and adds that he had a good run as trustee. “Of course I was disappointed, however, 12 years as a trustee leaves me satisfied, content and proud, said Harle. “I wish the best for the new board. The new Board of Education will elect a chair at the next scheduled meeting on Tues. Dec. 6.

during an interview with CBC on Monday morning, he was told by the reporter that there would be a recount. But Peter Wipper, chief election officer, said there would be no recount. “I would like to clarify that the City of

request a recount. “I’m not too interested in asking for a recount, I have a lot of faith in the city staff who look after the election process, Grant said. “I think with all the election technology we’ve got now it’s pretty accurate.

Discovery Island voters decide to keep Abram around a while longer KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Jim Abram was reelected to represent the Quadra Island area at the Strathcona Regional District. A b r a m g a r n e re d 791 votes while opponent Shawn O’Connor received 227. The two men found themselves in a heated election campaign leading up to last Saturday’s election. In a message written by O’Connor in Quadra’s online newspaper, the Gumboot, O’Connor says he has concerns that Abram has gone unchallenged for so long. “I believe that there are many challenges associated with longt e r m p o l i t i c i a n s, ” O’Connor says. “The effectiveness of such individuals diminishes over time as their ability to see objectively, narrows. The result is disengaged constituents who become alienated by leadership that no longer represents them, or the majority of residents, on a wide range of very important issues.” But the majority of Quadra Islanders disagreed and re-elected Abram, who has served Electoral Area C (Discovery IslandsMainland Inlets) at the Strathcona Regional

District since Feb. 28, 2008 and as a director with the Comox Strathcona Regional District since 1988, four years (2002-06) as chair. “I’m really, really pleased I got back in, it was the first time in a number of years I was challenged,” Abram says. “This year, someone got the idea that I had been around too long, but it was a pretty decisive win, probably the biggest voter turnout we’ve had on Quadra Island.” As for O’Connor’s tactics, Abram said that was his choice. “He ran his campaign the way he wanted to, certainly I’m not comfortable at all with the way he ran his campaign but I took the high road all the way to the end,” Abram says. “I made my choice and I think people appreciated that – it certainly showed in the polls.” Now with the election behind him, Abram says it’s time to focus on several projects on the go for Quadra Island, including the Quathiaski Cove Neighbourhood Plan that will create a walkable neighbourhood and include seniors housing and a seniors care facility around the Quadra-Campbell River ferry terminal area. “It’s a new concept

for Quadra, but it will all be in one place so it won’t affect the rural character of Quadra,” Abram says. “We’re trying to look after an aging demographic.” Abram will also continue to fight for lighthouse protection and for lower ferry fares and to lobby the provincial government to move BC Ferries back to the Ministry of Transportation portfolio. He is also working on getting high-speed Internet across Quadra Island. “I look forward to the next three years and I’m very pleased my electorate felt so strongly about my reelection.”

Leigh back in Area D Brenda Leigh was also re-elected to her Strathcona Regional District post as the director for Electoral Area D. Leigh received 634

votes while challenger Kellie O’Brien garnered 456 votes. Leigh, who has served as area director since 1993, is pleased to retain her role. “I was very happy with my positive campaign and the chance to talk to so many hundreds of people in my area on their doorstep,” Leigh says. “My team helped me tremendously and I can’t thank them enough.” Leigh says she is thankful people came out to vote. “Democracy is all about choices and, win or lose, we all want the best for our region and our neighbourhoods,” Leigh says. “Now that the election is over, we will be pulling together to review our plans and advance our issues. I have a feeling that 2012 will be a great year for us. I will continue to reach out to my constituents with a refreshed mandate and I will continue to

give our regional constituents the care and attention that they have come to expect.” Leigh says she will continue to push for the Northern Area D Sewer Plan and seek public direction on available options and work to complete an Official Community Plan review for Area D. Leigh will also continue to push for zero waste targets in the Solid Waste Management Plan, which is coming up for review, and will consider possibly establishing a Flood Protection Service for the Oyster River area which may include upg rading work on the Glenmore Dike. Leigh says she will also “advocate on behalf of constituents of Area D for the Provincial Ministry of T ranspor tation and Infrastructure to improve the state and condition of our roads and drainages.”

Local teacher is hero RENÉE ANDOR

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

A local teacher will receive an award for his heroic act. Yves Poirier, history teacher at Timberline, will fly to Quebec City this weekend to accept an award on behalf of the Quebec government, recognizing an act of civic duty he accomplished this past Christmas Eve while visiting family in Quebec. Poirier goes back to his hometown of Senneterre, Quebec, for most Christmas holidays, but during his last Christmas visit his aunt passed away on Dec. 22. Poirier and his father were moving her stuff from the nursing home she was in, back to her old house, which she had given to Poirier as an early inheritance, on Dec. 24. When they parked the truck at the house, which sits alongside the Nottaway River, Poirier noticed a snowmobile down on the frozen river. “I open the door, I hear screaming, that’s a girl – that’s the wife of the guy that is sinking down there, that is in the water already,” e x p l a i n e d Po i r i e r.

“Then I could see the man, well I could see the head sticking out of the ice.” Poirier said the man was yelling for his wife not to come any closer because the ice was thin, but Poirier ran down without even thinking about it, grabbing a strap the man’s wife was holding along the way. “A b o u t 2 0 ya rd s before the hole I had to go on my belly because the ice was dark; when the ice is that dark it’s because the water’s right there,” said Poirier, who added that this was the point when he thought about what he was doing, but it was now to late to turn back. The man was exhausted from trying to pull himself out. Because the ice kept breaking under the man’s weight when he tried to get out, Poirier said the hole was about 10 by 15 feet when he arrived. Poirier threw the strap to the man and tried to pull him out, almost being pulled in himself a couple of times, when he heard a noise underneath him. “It cracked right under me,” said Porier. “I felt the ice was not

good at all.” He moved about 10 feet away, sat up, dug in his heels, and pulled again. He said he almost had the man out, when Poirier’s 85-year-old father had made it down onto the ice. His father tossed Poirier a length of rope to tie around himself, and pulled on Poirier so that he wouldn’t go into the water. Within a few minutes of Poirier’s arrival the man was out of the water. However, he had already been in the water for about 10 minutes before Porier showed up. Also, the man’s wife had called 911 but the location was on a long private

road and hard for her to explain to 911 dispatch. “When they (ambulances) showed up, he was already out of there (the river) for 20 minutes. He would not have made it, that’s for sure,” Poirier said. While Poirier is looking forward to a paid trip to Quebec City to pick up his award, he said he doesn’t think his heroic act was too big of a deal. “The thing is you have to be able to look at yourself in the mirror the next morning,” said Poirier. “You don’t want to look at yourself as somebody that’s going to back out of the (dangerous) situation, so, not my style.”

Our View

Mayor didn’t get mandate for change Congratulations to Walter Jakeway and his successful election to Mayor of Campbell River on Saturday. Congratulations, also to the successful city councillors, We say: Our new regional district directors and school board trustees and thank-you for mayor will need your willingness to work on our to work with his behalf for the betterment of our community. Additional thanks, also, council to all who ran for election to local government. Now, the task at hand begins. It was widely accepted that this was a crucial election for the

future of Campbell River. Mayor-elect Jakeway in particular advocated wholesale change in the way we run our city and the council that runs it. Jakeway said that we would be getting a new mayor no matter what and that voters should dump the incumbents and elect all new city councillors in order to enact real change. Well, that didn’t happen and now Jakeway has to work with an experienced core of incumbent city councillors who were all re-elected. Even the two new councillors are well known people active in the community. So, Jakeway needs to be careful with any belief that he has a mandate for change. Perhaps voters

aren’t as discontented as the conventional wisdom would have indicated. Now the corollary to that is that only about 30 per cent of eligible voters elected our mayor and council. Those who are unhappy with the previous council must lie in that vast 70 per cent who didn’t vote. Unfortunately, not voting isn’t the same as casting a vote for change. If you wanted change, then you should have voted. Our new mayor will now have to mend bridges and learn to work with an experienced team of councillors. Campbell River will need all that experience as well as the new perspective our rookie mayor can bring to the process. Good luck.

Good point: Mayor Filed for publication with the Mirror Dear Mr. Mayor and Newly Elected Council I am a small business owner in Campbell River and an active community member who participates on several volunteer Boards and committees. I take an active leadership role in the community. Congratulations on your win for mayor and to the new council members. I would like to pass on a couple of comments to you: 1. Our small business (construction and design) enjoys a very positive relationship with City Hall – contrary to the rhetoric of the campaign. You announced at the “all candidates meeting” (which my young staff and I attended) that there is no way for people to directly contact anyone through the website at City Hall. You were quite mistaken and apparently you had not fully looked at the website, which is actually quite informative. In fact, every person and department is listed with phone numbers and email addresses on the “Contact Us” tab. You appeared very “uninformed” and “not very current” to the youth of this community – just as the last mayor. I hope you will focus on social media as well as “old fashioned” contact with the community so that you are reaching out to people under 50. 2. We employ 6-8 people under 30 years old in our business. They, and we, are truly disappointed that candidates run their campaigns on “let’s bring lots of retirees” and lots of “trades training.” Truly, there is absolutely very little reason for anyone with a college or university education to come or remain in Campbell Continued on A11

Chilly climate for British Columbia’s carbon plan

Tom Fletcher B.C. Views

B.C.’s carbon emission trading plan died last week at the age of four. No service was announced. The end came as the B.C. capital hosted politicians from neighbouring U.S. states and western provinces for their annual economic conference. Washington, Oregon, Montana, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico followed through with plans to withdraw from the Western Climate Initiative, leaving California, B.C., and theoretically Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec to come up with a trading system to put further costs on greenhouse gas emissions. Fossil fuel kingpins Alberta and Saskatchewan wanted nothing to do with the WCI from the beginning,

when it set a goal of 15-per-cent reduction in emissions by 2020. This leaves B.C. as the only jurisdiction in North America with a carbon tax, and an emission reduction target twice as ambitious – 33 per cent by 2020. Because of that tax, all B.C.’s border states and provinces have an economic advantage for emitting industries. And with natural gas development booming and population growing, B.C.’s emissions continue upward. Industry representatives gave the legislature finance committee the view from ground level. Take farming. “None of our competitors have a carbon tax,” Garnet Etsell of the B.C.

Agriculture Council told the committee’s Chilliwack hearing. “This has cost us, to date, with the last increase, $45 million a year. With the increase that’s anticipated in 2012, that’ll be $65 million. Keep in mind that the agriculture industry last year had a cumulative net loss of $80 million.” B.C.’s biggest greenhouse gas emitters are the petroleum and cement manufacturing industries. They only pay the tax on fuel while significant process emissions are tax-exempt. But even that is stimulating demand for cement imported from outside B.C., This not only hurts domestic producers, it adds emissions via trucking or rail shipping. Then there is B.C.’s “carbon neu-

tral public sector,” where provincial and local governments are forced to buy carbon offsets. The Pacific Carbon Trust then funds emission-reduction projects for big emitters such as gas plants in the northeast. So five years on, that’s the upshot of Gordon Campbell’s lofty goal to lead the world in climate action. We’re hurting our own agriculture and manufacturing, and transferring scarce funds from hospitals, senior care homes and schools to subsidize profitable energy corporations. And emissions are still rising. It’s no wonder the finance committee has recommended major changes Continued on A11

COMMUNITY

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2011 | CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR |

National Child Day events at Community Centre today The National Child Day celebration at the Community Centre today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. will celebrate and showcase our community’s commitment to fundamental human rights for children including “the right to enjoy their childhood

freely.” National Child Day is a Canada-wide celebration of two historic events for children: the adoption of the United Nations’ Declaration on the Rights of the Child (1959) and Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989).

“Campbell River can be very proud of its support for children and parents,” says Family Place coordinator Joyce McMann. “National Child Day Celebrations at the Community Centre will highlight many of the organizations and

programs that add to the community,” says Leah Knutson, Recreation Programmer for the City of Campbell River. On November 23, the Community Centre will be bursting at the seams with an exciting array of child-friendly

activities. Listen to stories, explore the world of safety, play in a cardboard city, enjoy the healthy snacks and take home some really cool crafts. Admission is free. Bring the family and enjoy the world of childhood together.

Mayor: Please broaden your message to include youth Continued from A10 River. We are suffering from a “brain drain” in the community – no professionals and no managers. I beg you to focus your work on job creation and retention – especially in the professional, managerial, and business owner sector. Without those young people and young families here who for m the longer term tax base, we won’t survive or be able to support all those retirees who pay a lower tax rate and spend very little

money in the community, yet want to take advantage of all the services (and without paying any more taxes – all just ludicrous in my view). Someone needs to get this right. This is a huge problem with young families who need to export their highest wage earner to Fort Mac, etc. I know you won your campaign based on your retiree constituency, but you really must reach out to the young community as they are leaving in

droves. Our children in their 20’s and 30’s no longer want to stay in Campbell River as there are no jobs for them. Please help. Retirees are great (I’m 60), but a community cannot survive on them alone. Please broaden your message to include the youth. My staff and their circle of friends are so disappointed. Most want to move to Victoria, Vancouver or Calgary – somewhere they can raise a family in a two parent household and make a decent wage as a result of

their education. They are all smart enough to know that even the Hydro project will not provide long term job sustainability. We have got to focus on bringing a wide variety of jobs to our city – not just trades jobs. I’m sorry to say that they view your win as a backward move for our community – just another mill manager to keep harping on trades and unions jobs, but no real professional or independent small business focus. I hope you will

receive this message in a positive way, take it to heart, and know that we will support you wholeheartedly as long as you are working towards future economic growth in Campbell River for all ages. Best of Luck and good hard work during your mayor ship and council terms (and, Mr. Jakeway, I hope you will wear a suit and tie and be called Mr. Mayor). D e n i s e M i t ch e l l Hills Campbell River

Fletcher: Is B.C.’s climate strategy dead? Continued from A10 to Finance Minister Kev i n Fa l c o n . H e should cap the carbon tax at the 2012 rate. He should “address the inequity for B.C. cement producers,” and also “consider immediate carbon tax exclusions for agriculture, including the greenhouse sector, and public institutions.”

Falcon allowed last week that B.C.’s competitive position must be considered, now that U.S. President Barack Obama has reversed himself on the need for an emission trading system that would have levelled the North American playing field. Look for changes when Falcon tables his first budget in February.

Does this mean B.C.’s climate strategy is dead? No. Delegates from U.S. states and Alberta gathered in front of the legislature to kick the tires on B.C.’s newest weapon, natural gas-powered vehicles. G a r b a g e t r u c k s, s ch o o l bu s e s a n d milk truck fleets have switched from diesel to

natural gas, and thanks to its abundance and low price, they’re saving 50 per cent on fuel bills. The trucks and buses eliminate particulate pollution and reduce carbon emissions by 30 per cent compared to gasoline or diesel. Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom says natural gas is

being considered for BC Ferries, the largest public-sector emissions source of all, which is exempt from the carbon neutrality rule. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BC Localnews.com tfletcher@blackpress. ca

Mary Emde (Twizell) Mary Emde (nee Twizell) passed away peacefully in Campbell River only two days short of her 94th birthday. Born in Brighton, England in 1917, to Robert and Jenny Twizell (Saunders), Mary came to Canada two years later when her parents immigrated and settled in northern Saskatchewan. The oldest of ďŹ ve children, she took responsibility at the age of twelve for her brothers James, John, and Howard and her sisters, Gladys and Jean, when their mother passed away in 1929. In 1950, the family moved from Garrick to Campbell River. Her ďŹ rst husband Frank Emde, died in a mining accident in 1953, and her second husband, Howard McAuley, passed away in 1974. Mary is survived by her children: Ron (Helen), Wayne (Joan), Marlene (Norm) and Valerie (Murray); grandchildren Eugene, Melanie, Jason, Curtis, Alison, Kim, Kelly, Brad and Lisa, and great grandchildren Amanda, Raymond, Justin, Chelsea, Stephanie, Drew, Kai, Mara, Joe, Hannah, Kylie, and Hayden. We will long remember mum for many things: her gardening skills, her shelves of home-canned fruits and jams, her homemade bread and buns, her curling stories, her love of crib and puzzles and her always-full jar of peppermints; but most of all we will remember her for her strength, her determination, her seless generosity and her pride in her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Christmas was always celebrated at mum’s place for our extended family and friends and there was always room for another chair at the table. She was the solid centre the entire family revolved around and she will be missed.

Len (Edward L) Blakely Dec. 2, 1925 – Nov. 20, 2011 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Len Blakely on Sunday, November 20 at Campbell River Hospital. Len was born in Vancouver on Dec. 2, 1925 and later moved to Menzies Bay as a young child. He lived on a oat house until he moved to Courtenay at the age of ďŹ ve. In 1942 he joined the RCAF and served as an aircraft mechanic during the war. Len and Wyn married in 1948 and moved to Bloedel; they moved to Campbell River in 1954. He worked in the logging industry until an injury forced him to ďŹ nd the passion of his life – ďŹ shing. Len built his own troller and he remained in the ďŹ shing industry until his retirement. Len was an active member of the Shriners in Campbell River and a Past-Master of Masonic Lodge 149 in Campbell River. Service work formed an important part of his remaining years. Len took great joy in spending time with his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Len was well known for his generosity, sense of humour, and his great gift of story telling. We are privileged to have had him in our lives. Len is survived by his wife Wyn, his sister Jean (Ray), his son, Bryan (Whitehorse), daughter Katherine (Campbell River), daughter-in-law Annie (Campbell River), grandchildren Joel (Rachel), Brendan, Joe, and Adam (Cara) great-grandchildren Carter, Johnny, and Adelaide. He is predeceased by his sister Bernice, (2004) granddaughter Misha (1997) and his daughter Maurie (2007). The family would like to thank all those who cared for Len so well during his illness. Friends and family are invited to join us for a fond farewell at The Masonic Hall on Friday November 25th at 11a.m. In Lieu of owers, donations may be made to Campbell River Hospital Auxillary.

The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at New Horizons for their professional and personal care of mum during the three and a half years she was a resident there. Funeral services will be held at Sutton Funeral Home in Campbell River on November 26 at 1:00 pm. A reception will follow.

Vinal Herbert Kilcollins C.B. Handle “Relicâ€? Dear Dad, By the Dark of the Moon on the 6th of June, 1934 you were born in a farmhouse on Blue Hill in River De Chute, New Brunswick, right between the Saint John River and the American border. I wish I could have been there when you were playing in the back woods but I met you later in life when you were a TRUCKER, a WELDER, a MECHANIC, a STOCK CAR DRIVER, a BOAT BUILDER, and a HOME BUILDER. Dad, you gave me my ďŹ rst wooden spoke wheeled TRICYCLE in 1963 and me and two friends immediately headed for the steepest paved hill in town for a taste of speed, all three of us three years old in 1963 in Centreville, New Brunswick. Dad, you let me drive the speedboat while you water skied in Florida with my older brother Randy standing on the skis in front of you and you took me up on the house roof and we tossed that Parachute Man that oated in the air and went so far away. I laughed with DELIGHT. Dad, I brought a friend to your welding shop and you welded his bike as good as new and never asked for money. Dad, at 12 years of age you gave me the best bicycle I could have hoped for, a MAN-SIZED 26â€?, 3-speed with a FRONT BASKET. Dad, remember when you threw the book at me and said READ THIS: BRITISH COLUMBIA TIMBER FALLING CODES AND PRACTICES. I immediately went to the most dangerous snag within sight of the house and commenced to KNOCK ‘ER DOWN. And then, by Big Bad Alders, I ďŹ nally became a Class A Faller in Oregon and Washington. Dad, ďŹ nally you showed me how to be a SCRAPPER. For all these things and many more I thank you. From your loving Son, Gary Wayne Kilcollins (De Ledgend) P.S. Dad, you and I were (and are) both Gypsies, looking and waiting for our eternal home to come. “Cowardice asks the question: Is it safe? Expediency asks the question: Is it politic? Vanity asks the question: Is it popular? But conscience asks the question: Is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because his conscience tells him it is rightâ€? - Martin Luther

Free talk by local author Was there a moment in your life when you just knew something, a sudden realization, large or small, that clarified what course of action you should take? C a m p b e l l R ive r author Susan Black had such a moment, and wrote about it. Her essay, How Detachment Changes Everything, is about the difficult decisions parents must sometimes make when their children are in trouble. Her essay was chosen for inclusion in a book called The Moment I Knew, published by Sugati Publications. “Susan’s essay will resonate with many parents who have faced the dilemma of making hard decisions and loving your child at the most difficult of times,” said editor Terri Spahr Nelson. The anthology The

Moment I Knew is a diverse collection of short essays and poems from 30 women sharing insightful moments of their lives – from the sublime events to the unexpected, or more mundane. The book addresses topics that are universal to most women: love, relationships, pregnancy, parenting, loss, faith, culture, self-discovery and the human condition. Black will host a forum which will focus on three of the essays from this book on Saturday from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Campbell River library. There will be time for discussion and sharing of personal stories. The purpose of the gathering is to reflect on moments in three authors’ lives that were etched in their memories, and reflect on participants’ own ‘moments that we

Killer Whales honour hard work The Campbell River Swim Club gathered to honour its last year’s performances. It was a challenging year for the club, as the Strathcona Pool was closed for six months to undergo renovations. During this time the club focused on dryland exercises and travelled to Comox when the pool was available.

“I think under the challenging circumstances we were able to represent the city of Campbell River extremely well,” said Head Coach Chris Koopmans. “Our swimmers showed resilience in overcoming obstacles that were completely out of their control and this has really helped them as student athletes this year

pursue their goals intently.” Best swim performance recognition went to: Jasmine Skuse (8 & U Girl-50 Free); Gage Windle (8 & U Boy50 Free); Melayana Beaudin (9-10 Girl-50 Free); Cole Reid (9-10 Boy-200 M); Mackenzie Padington (11-12 Girl200 Breaststroke); Conner Skuse (1112 Boy-1,500 Free);

Jennifer Miller and Kiersten Padington (13-14 Girl-50 Free); Austin Johnson (13-14 Boy-50 Free); Karlyn Healy (15 & O Girl200 Free); and David Palmer (15& O Boy-100 Free). Most Improved Awards went to: Palmer; Catalina Manders; Maya Ruehlen; Lilan Forsyth; and Charlie Bridle.

Club Sportsmanship Awards went to: Palmer; Maddy Kowalko; Kasey Lathangue; Alexandra Apedaile; and Jocelyn Deimer. The Tom Cross Award was given to Jenna Beaudin. For more information about the Killer Whales Swim Club, visit www.crkw. ca or call (250) 9141214.

The No. 1 Auto Body Bantam A Tyees continued to show steady improvement during a weekend road trip down-Island. Campbell River roared to a 6-0 second period lead enroute to a 7-1 victory over the Cowichan Valley Capitals in a game played Sunday afternoon at Fuller Lake. Tyee Travis Goodwin led the attack with a pair of goals while Gavin Rauser, Rio Massee, Jaret Knowles, Cole Rennie, and Kurtis Scriba rounded out the scoring. It was a dominating performance that Tyees head coach Peter Martin said was well deserved. “We’ve faced some really tough competition during the past month, learned how hard you have to work to have success, and today we are a far better team for all the extra effort our players have put in.” Martin had praise for a couple of unsung heroes. “Kurtis Scriba and Tyson Goebel have made great contributions lately,” he said. “They take a great amount of pride in their willingness to kill penalties.”

The night before, the Tyees were edged 4-3 by the undefeated Victoria Racquet Club Kings, the same team that spanked the Tyees 10-4 just a month ago. Goodwin scored twice in the loss, while Grady McInnes added a single. “We were much better prepared this time around,” said Martin. “Racquet Club thought it was going to be easy and we matched their intensity the entire game.” With four goals in two games, Goodwin, converted to centre from wing, is the hottest scorer in the Tyees line-up. “We were trying to find a guy to play in the middle but the first requirement for that position is a guy that will take care of his own zone,” said Martin. “Travis has learned it’s a lot of hard work but now he’s starting to reap the rewards. In the offensive zone he’s more than willing to stand in front, he’s got good hand-eye, and can pick up a lot of the junk around the front of the net.” The Tyees host a rematch with the Capitals at 12:45 p.m Sunday at Rod Brind’Amour Arena.

If a Christmas record falls in the forest....

Today, Podium of Life ski academy has partnered with the Campbell River Gymnastics club to have some dry-land training. Mainstream Biological Consulting, which is also focused on excellence, has sponsored Podium of Life. With enrolment up from last year and the forecast for a full year of snow, the Harles, who founded the academy last year, are excited to get under way. If a Christmas record falls in the forest, will anybody hear it? Probably not, but we will continue to see it for a very long time - vinyl is so enduring that people are creating all sorts of art and objects out of old vinyl records. Please check campbellriverrecycles. ca for what to do with this and other unwanted materials. Anyone with information on the person/s who illegally dumped these items can call CRIMESTOPPERS 1-800-222-TIPS or 250-286-5700. Think you won’t get caught? Think again! Go to: www.campbellriverrecycles.ca for locations that will take this kind of garbage!

The secret to success is actually not a secret at all. High achievers, whether they are athletes, musicians, artists, or scholars all have one thing in common: practice. Some parents of aspiring skiers have figured this out and enrolled their children in the Podium of Life Ski Academy. Many of these skiers are aiming for the podium in ski racing or freestyle skiing, and now that they go to school on Mount Washington they can train every day. Others have enrolled in the program to experience an alternate form of education in a class with low student / teacher ratio.

a seven piece orchestra performing Vivaldi’s Gloria. The Gloria is a joyous musical celebration with distinctive melodies and rhythms that give it universal appeal. It is a perfect choral piece to herald the Christmas Season. The orchestra Montgomery has assembled to accompany the choir is made up of talented local musicians who bring Vivaldi’s music to life. The second half of the program will see the choir offering a variety of Christmas anthems and spirituals. One particularly beautiful melody is based on Sibelius’ Finlandia, another on the theme from Beethoven’s Sonata Pathetique. Familiar carols are woven into new songs as the choir presents all new numbers for your listening enjoyment. The perfor mance will be on Saturday Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Tidemark Theatre. Tickets available at the Tidemark. Adults – $18; seniors and students – $15 So mark your calendars, bring family and friends, and enjoy a great evening of choral and orchestral music.

Choir serves up sounds of the season

T

Rachel Fuller will join the Campbell River Children’s Choir for a night of seasonal music on Dec. 10-11.

he Campbell River Children’s Choir and special guest artist, saxophonist Rachel Fuller, invite the public to Give Us Hope – a seasonal celebration to be held at St. Peter’s Anglican Church on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday Dec. 11 at 3 p.m. The music will encompass many different styles from the 16th Century to the present and include some traditional carols with a Cuban twist, some familiar Jazz Standards and a uniquely Canadian version of the Twelve Days of Christmas. The choir is pleased to have saxophonist Rachel Fuller sharing her talents at this special event. Fuller is newly arrived from England where she was Principal Sax of the Southampton University Jazz Orchestra, Principal Sax of the Southampton City Pops Orchestra and

Principal Clarinet of the University Sinfonietta Orchestra. She graduated with a First Class Honours Degree and soon began touring with an international showband taking her around North America, the South Pacific, the Far East, Middle East and much of Europe. Fuller is presently performing in several local groups as well as teaching privately. Fuller will play several selections with the choir and treat the audience to a solo

where she will join forces with local bassist Grahame Edwards. The choir is in the midst of an exciting year which will see 30 of its members travel to New York City to perform in a choral festival at Carnegie Hall. Singing on the stage of Carnegie Hall, where some of the greatest artists in musical history have performed, is an amazing opportunity that the singers earned by way of their auditioned recording.

“I always tell the singers to give their all at our recording sessions,” says music director Barbara Prowse, “as it is these recordings that open doors for us, both in gaining acceptance to festivals and to bringing in artisits and composers to work with us. “The singers work very hard and it is great to see their efforts rewarded.” Tickets for Give Us Hope are available at the Music Plant, cash only.
