Alan Adcock of Campbell River got his ultimate wildlife shot on Nov. 2 when he encountered this cougar near Brown’s Bay. Adcock has been photographing wildlife in the area for 33 years hoping to see a cougar but never ever accomplishing a sighting. He caught this one while riding his motorcycle. Jumping off he got within 20 feet of it. At one point “he started growling at me and showing his teeth,” Adcock said. Eventually, the cougar tired of the encounter and snuck off. High-powered rifle taken during break-in

MECHANICAL SPECIAL We will beat any mechanical quote!

A cabin in the Port Alice area was burglarized recently, resulting in the theft of, among other things, a high-powered firearm. Port Alice RCMP received a report on Nov. 1 of a break and enter to a cabin in the Victoria Lake area. The robbery occurred sometime between Sep. 1 and Nov. 1. Stolen items include a red Honda

generator and a brand new Norinco SKS 762 semi-automatic high powered rifle with bayonet. No ammunition or other noteworthy items were taken. The police are not concerned that the rifle could be used in additional crimes because of the lack of ammo stolen and the fact that the weapon has been missing for up to two months but no one has reported

finding it or seeing it being used, said Port Hardy RCMP staff Sgt. Anna Marie Mallard. Police don’t have any suspects, she said. “We have had no new developments,” said Mallard. Persons with information regarding this case are urged to contact either Port Alice RCMP at 250284-3353, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-2228477.

We offer a full range of mechanical services. Come in and see us today!

field have estimated that about 30 per cent of cancer deaths -- which amounts to 2 million worldwide and 200,000 in the United States -- could be prevented each year simply by optimizing the vitamin D levels in the general population. I encourage all of my patients to have their 25(OH) vitamin D measured in the blood to aim for 130-150nmol/L. In our area the sun exposure we get in the summer does not maintain our vitamin D levels year round. ● Tip#3 Exercise. One of the primary ways exercise lowers

your risk for cancer is by reducing elevated insulin levels, which creates a low sugar environment that discourages the growth and spread of cancer cells. For example, physically active adults experience about half the incidence of colon cancer as their sedentary counterparts, and women who exercise regularly may reduce their breast cancer risk by 20 to 30 percent compared to those who are inactive. Wearing a pedometer has been studied to improve exercise outcomes. Aiming for 10,000 steps per day is

ideal. We now stock pedometers in the office to help people get started. ● Tip#4: Omega 3 essential fats from fish oils: EPA and DHA are the main omega 3 oils that are critical for the proper function of every cell in the human body including insulin metabolism. I recommend 3000mg total per day which is provided in 1 tablespoon of purified cod liver oil. with Don Daniels email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com n Wednesday, November 2nd a special gathering of fishermen O and friends was held at Comfort Zone in Campbell River. This get together of anglers is usually held on the pier each year and has been a tradition for more than 16 years. A prize is given out to the worst netting job of the year and a prize is given to the angler that catches a fish closest to a Tyee. Prizes include binoculars, fake gold pins and otherr kooky prizes. I had a coffee with Benn Luck and found out thatt more and more women are fishing the pier andd the locals, tourists andd people who are visitingg the pier are comingg out for more than icee cream. During the month off November many anglerss Arvo Lahtii, Veteran Angler are out hunting but the pier has a steady flow of anglers who come out each day in hopes of catching a chum or feeder spring. Many locals are venturing out to other fishing spots around the area and often report their catches or keepp it a secret. I received a salmon re recipe from a local fissherman. 4 lbs of salmon filets sk skin on 2 cups oil ¼ cup mustard 1 lb fresh ginger 3 ozs whiskey 1 cup brown sugar 3 tto 4 garlic cloves Campbell River Anglers Mix all ingredients and refrigerate for 4 hours. Lay skin down on hot barbecue. Close lid and cook 7 to 8 minutes. If your fishing season is over and boat storage is needed, Indoor Storage Solutions now has outdoor space available that is on concrete, fenced in and secure. Both indoor and outdoor space will free up your driveway in the upcoming months. Coming up in the fishingg corner I move indoorss and will talk about fly-tying for the beginner andd where to buy productss needed to get started.. Mediterranean diet. Only 25 per cent of people eat enough vegetables, so by all means eat as many brightly colored vegetables as you are comfortable with. Ideally, they should be fresh and organic and about five cups per day. The Mediterranean diet is also high in fish and legumes and low in carbohydrates. One scoop of Greens First provides the antioxidants of 10 cups of fruit and vegetables to help with this goal. â—? Tip #7: Pay attention to your food preparation: Barbequing foods increase the intake of advanced glycosalated end products AGES (see my website for related articles) increasing the risk of chronic diseases including cancer. Microwaving foods denatures nutrients and baking, steaming or broiling reduces the production of free radicals that occur

with frying. â—? Tip #8: Optimize gut flora: There is mounting research that 50 per cent of your immune system resides in your gut and with optimal gut flora this is maintained, preventing inflammation in the body that can lead to chronic diseases including cancers. Probiotics can help the body detoxify carcinogens, they can make toxins less toxic and they crowd out the pathogenic bacteria that may generate carcinogens in the body. â—? Tip #9: Maintain your weight: This is achieved by avoiding your food allergens and following some of the above tips. Avoiding wheat is one of the quickest ways I find my patients are able to lose weight. We provide food sensitivity testing to get people started. â—? Tip #10: Get enough sleep. Sleep is

‘You never knew if you’d be waking up in the morning’ Earle Couper Black Press

Ruth Masters still has her trusty Kodak Vigilant camera, which captured photos no one else was able to shoot during the Second World War. Photo by Earle Couper. 8,500 on board. The first announcement they made was that if anybody fell overboard they weren’t going to risk the lives of the others by turning around to pick them up. So you better not fall overboard,” Masters recalled. The Second World War was “a nice war,” for Masters. “I got thousands of miles of free travel and I didn’t have to kill anybody and they didn’t get me,” she said of her time as an administrative sergeant in charge of the orderly room (RCAF headquarters) in London, England. “I was no flaming hero. I mostly spent the time heroically shining the seat of my skirt. It was just the way it was.” Her perspective on the war is a testimony to the valiant spirit that has earmarked Masters’ life. Consider she survived 14 months of steady bombing during The Blitz. “That was a

psychological shock. The whole sky lit up with bombs and planes chasing each other and flak. And you think, ‘If those guys up there aren’t careful they’re going to kill us.’ Then you realize that’s essentially what they’ve come to do,” she said. “We were boarded out all over London so one bomb wouldn’t take out the whole RCAF overseas headquarters. When we got to work in the morning we’d do a hasty check to see what friends were missing. We all thought we’d be seeing the pearly gates ahead of our time. “One day I walked to work and almost a block was missing ... gone ... just rubble. There were about a dozen or so people standing around the outskirts. A policeman told me to move on because the people there were waiting for the bodies to be brought out of this

let me go by. “When I got in, there was the real RCAF photographer. But he quickly tumbled to what I was up to. He said, ‘You can stoop in front of me and I’ll shoot over your head.’ This is what we did and I got a picture of the king shaking hands. He was a very nice, handsome man,” Masters said. “The best part of it was after the war ended the rush to get

back to Canada was just overwhelming. A bunch of us that had no reason to hurry home waived our (repat) number and let others go first. So I was there an extra year in Britain. To reward us for our sacrifice in letting others go first, we had a moral leadership course in Stratford On Avon for a week or so. Then a week in Paris, a week in Switzerland and then over to Holland,”

Masters said. Masters has not forgotten her fallen comrades. Every Nov. 11 the provincial government honours the war sacrifices of British Columbians by naming geographical features after them. “I think I’ve named 50 features on the Island; 10 of them for guys we lost in the war,” she said, citing Cyril Cottingham and Barnett Harvey as two examples.

COURTENAY — “My RCAF wartime experiences were the adventure of my life.” That’s what Comox Valley activist Ruth Masters told Hazel Lennox in Lennox’ Us Dames Have Come a Long Way book. Given the amazing adventures the feisty and fun-loving 91-year-old Masters has lived, that’s quite the statement. But she has the keen memory and photo albums to back it up. Masters joined the RCAF Women’s Division in 1942 and went to Toronto for her training. “The women’s depot was on Jarvis Street, which was the red light area. Everyone from Toronto blinks when I tell them I got my training on Jarvis Street,” Masters recalled with a laugh. After a year and a half at CFB Uplands (about five miles outside of Ottawa) Masters was sent to Halifax. “It was as cold as Greenland in December of 1943 when we got to Halifax. They put us in a men’s barracks and we all rushed to the washroom. There were yards and miles of troughs for men to piddle in. It wasn’t exactly a heroic sendoff,” Masters chuckled. The seriousness of the war was made immediately apparent when Masters was sailing to London, England. “There was between 8,000 and

mess so they could identify them,” Masters said. “I was very lucky actually. There were 12,000 or 14,000 killed in London while we were there. When you went to bed at night you never knew if you’d be waking up in the morning. I got so I’d sleep through a bombing raid. I explained to my friend it must be because my conscience was so clear and my thoughts so pure. I didn’t get very far with that explanation,” Masters chuckled. Her secret to surviving the bombing was unique. “It was too far to run to an air raid shelter in the dark. So I just stayed in bed with a pillow above my head and below my head.” A constant companion in London was Masters’ trusty $20 (“A ton of money back then.”) Kodak Vigilant camera. “We weren’t allowed to have cameras. They were very strict. But I kept mine, so I’ve got pictures that nobody else has,” said Masters, adding she hid her camera in her cleavage. One of her more memorable Kodak moments was snapping a photo of King George VI. “I could have swatted the king I was so close when he came for the victory celebration at Albert Hall and I had my camera. I said, ‘Official RCAF photographer,’ and this seven-foot cop

A special opportunity for anyone with a physical or mental disability to learn to ski or snowboard This winter the Vancouver Island Society for Adaptive Snowsports (VISAS) 2012 Learn to Ski

Winter Sports Festival runs from Jan. 8-12 at Mount Washington Alpine Resort. “Anyone with a

disability is welcome to attend” said Bob Hodgson, Co-Chair of the 2012 Learn to Ski Festival. “It’s

a great opportunity to get involved and receive four consecutive days of ski/ boarding instruction from our nationally certified instructors. VISAS provides free instruction, lift passes, equipment, two banquets, daily transportation from Courtenay to the Mountain and a good time! It’s a heck of deal.” The popular Learn to Ski Festival is limited to 35 students and is open to anyone over the age of six who has some ability to learn, with priority given to first time participants. “We have had people from as far away as Great Britain who have participated in the Festival,” added Hodgson. “And we have fun on and off the snow, ending the week with a dress up banquet.”

VISAS Instructors Lori Mellett and Tom Clarke with a festival student.

In its 19th year, VISAS’s volunteer instructors are getting ready for another exciting year on the mountain. Over 80 VISAS ski and snowboarding instructors volunteer their time seven days a week to provide those with a physical

or mental disability a chance to learn to downhill ski, snowboard or cross country ski, and at very little cost. For more details on the 2012 four day Learn to Ski Festival and to apply, visit: www.visasweb.ca. Applications for the

Learn to Ski must be received by Dec. 9 to be eligible. For additional information on the festival contact Bob Hodgson at 250339-6833 or email: curlew@shaw.ca. You will also find VISAS on Facebook and Flickr.

VISAS Instructors and volunteers can get everybody out on the slopes.

Cortes radio testing Cortes Community Radio suspended transmission at 89.5 FM to comply with Industry Canada regulations regarding testing of broadcast facilities. It is expected that the station will be off the air for a period of about three weeks followed by on air testing which may not consist of our regular programming. The board, management and staff are working to have some level of programming continue via the live internet streaming link at cortesisland.com during this testing phase. Cortes Community Radio has been working for over two years to obtain a licence from the CRTC and have recently been granted approval of their application. This testing process is designed to ensure that our new station does not interfere with other communications systems like other radio stations or communications systems used by aircraft. As part of their commitment to meet all of the requirements to legally operate the station, they are working with Industry Canada to complete this process and achieve certification. While the board has made every effort to budget for expenses related to licencing, unexpected costs have already arisen and will likely continue to arise. They ask that their supporters continue to be generous with their contributions over the next few months to enable us to complete the licencing requirements. You can donate on line at cortesisland.com (follow the Cortes Radio link) or send donations to Box 97, Manson’s Landing, VOP 1K0. The Cortes Community Radio Society is overseen by a volunteer board of directors. DJs on

Cortes Community Radio and the staff who operate and maintain the station infrastructure volunteer countless hours to keep the station going. “We appreciate the efforts of all these people to get us to this stage and thank them for their understanding and cooperation during this testing phase,” said Amber Sprungman, President of the Board. “We also very much

appreciate the patience and support of our sponsors and listeners during this important step of licencing. Without their support, we would not have been able to reach this point. “We are also counting on their support as we embark on the next phase in the life of our community radio station. We hope to be back on the air as soon as we possibly can.”
