The Campbell River Hospice Society and the BraveHearts Dragon Boat Team have partnered together to present the Art of the Paddle & More fundraiser on Oct. 22. Beautifully-carved paddles and other works of art will be auctioned off at a gala evening at the Maritime Heritage Centre.

The Art of the Paddle returns I

f you missed last years Art of the Paddle, you won’t want to miss Art of the Paddle & More this year. This exciting event, in support of the BraveHearts Dragon Boat Team and the Campbell River Hospice Society, will showcase 14, four-foot and eight, threefoot cedar paddles which have been carved by the Henderson family of Campbell River. These beautifully-carved paddles were then provided to 22 local artists to use as a blank canvas to create unique and distinctive works of art on. The evening events will commence at 6:30 p.m. at the Maritime Heritage Centre on Saturday, Oct. 22. This year, the Live Auction will

showcase 14 of the paddles as well as paintings and a Raku Salmon Sculpture, hence the More. Along with these unique art pieces, the evening will feature live entertainment, a wine bar with hors d’oeuvres, but don’t forget about the Silent Auction where you will find many treasures, including eight of these beautiful paddles. Tickets are $15 per person and are available at the Royal Bank of Canada (Campbell River branch), 1290 Shoppers Row (Susanne 250-204-2818) and at the Campbell River Hospice Society, 104 - 301 Dogwood Street (250-286-1121). The BraveHearts Dragon Boat Team is Canada’s first co-ed team whose members are survivors of all types of cancer, and their sup-

porters. Operated under the non-profit society, the North Island Dragon Boat Society, their aim is to enrich and improve the lives of all cancer survivors through a healthy and supportive environment. They also assist other cancer related groups in our community in their awareness and fundraising efforts. The Campbell River Hospice Society is also a nonprofit society that provides compassionate support and companionship to those individuals facing death and to the families and friends. With bereavement (grief) having no timeline, Hospice also provides: grief counselling; widow/ widowers, bereavement and relaxation support groups; a memorial garden located

on the Rotary Seawalk; and an extensive library. All Hospice services are available to our community and surrounding area free of charge. Working in partnership, the BraveHearts Dragon Boat Team and the Campbell River Hospice Society present this exciting evening for the community to enjoy. Incumbent councillor Ryan Mennie is seeking re-election. Mennie hopes to serve for a second term on city council after a tough three years. “It’s been an incredibly challenging time to come on as a new councillor,” Mennie said. “In three years, I’ve worked alongside three different city managers. As part of council, I helped to almost completely rebuild our economic development office, Rivercorp, revitalizing their board with Ryan Mennie representatives from all areas of business in our community and helping them find a new CEO. The city was also severely shortstaffed in several departments, including finance, making the first two budget sessions very challenging. And all of this took place while our community was losing millions of dollars worth of tax revenue with the closure of the Timberwest sawmill and the Catalyst pulp and paper mill.” In spite of the hurdles in his first three years, Mennie remains positive about his time spent on council and optimistic about the future. “During those challenges of inner turmoil at the city and the loss of a substantial amount of tax revenue and local jobs, there were some major achievements. We extended our runway and made improvements to our airport. We replaced a massive amount of aging water and sewer infrastructure on the highway in Willow Point on time and on budget. Both of these projects, totaling about $22 million, were done without borrowing thanks to the majority of funding coming from the provincial and federal governments. In the end we have a new airport authority promoting the facility as an industrial investment opportunity that can attract larger aircraft, and the seawalk was made even more beautiful and enjoyable as part of the highway project.” Of all the city projects completed over the last three years, there’s one in particular Mennie is most proud of. “Being the voice of young families in the community, I fought hard in my very first budget session to make sure the rest of council was aware of the need for replacing the playground at Willow Point Park. Seeing the smiles on the faces of the kids enjoying that new playground as I push my daughter on the swings made those long, late night budget sessions all worth it.” Mennie is optimistic about Campbell River moving forward as a community.

Challenging pumpkin year overcome Campbell River Garden Centre hosted its 17th Annual Pumpkin Contest on the weekend. This year had a lot of challenges for the home pumpkin growers as it was such a late, wet start to the summer and many pumpkin vines withered and died in the cold weather. Garden Centre owners Shauna and Nigel Lambeth actually wondered if any pumpkins would be entered this year, so they were happy to see some arriving on Saturday mor ning. These gardeners were nothing if not persistent and shared some laughs about the cold

start and how they are hoping for the “Big Pumpkin” next year. Each year the champion with the biggest pumpkin gets their name on the trophy. If you would like to try

your hand at growing a big pumpkin you will need some pumpkin seed for a big pumpkin (winners often give seed away so ask the Garden Centre if you are interested), manure

and a good sunny location. Remember not to start you pumpkin to early as the seedlings grow quickly and cannot be planted outside until the very end of May or early June. There are only two rules: you need to grow the pumpkin to enter it and only children who grow their pumpkins can enter in the kids category. This year’s winners (pictured above) were: Ray Thomas – 1st place adult; Don Bryer – 2nd place adult; Ashton Lambeth – 3rd place adult; Maura Dybwad – 1st place child; Shaylee Willis – 2nd place child; Bryanna Dybwad – 3rd place child.

Ted Foster running for school trustee Past school trustee Ted Foster has announced his candidacy for one of the five Campbell River spots as school trustee in the Nov. 19 Board of Education elections. Foster served as a trustee for the 2005– 2008 term, and he narrowly missed re-election in 2008. Foster was bor n in Comox, raised in Union Bay, and served in the regular army. He moved to Campbell River in 1970 and worked as a local self employed insurance adjuster, which he said gives him a strong business background. Foster has been an active volunteer member and past president of the noon Rotary Club since 1975. He initiated the Rotary Seawalk project in 1994, and he has continuously chaired the Seawalk committee since its inception. Foster was also a leader on the steering committee during the development of the Wilderness Centre and Centennial Trails at Strathcona Provincial Park. Converting Ecole Willow Point Elementary School into a single track French Immersion facility as an academic challenge to our local learners, was something Foster considered a highlight in his time on the school board. “The previous dual track model was inefficient for a small school. A big plus was securing $3.2 million in Ministry funding to upgrade and enlarge this older school at a time of declining district student enrollment. Students may have been bused to other schools. The opportunity was identified; the moving

forward was a collaborative board decision with management staff following through exceptionally well,” said Foster. Foster added that he was active in lobbying his fellow trustees and presenting challenges to senior staff, and he served as board representative on the design and building committees. “Schools are all about community service, especially the mandate to educate and prepare our youth for the adventures tomorrow will bring. The district has done a good job. It could do better. The island economy is rough,” said Foster. “The school district 72 budget is tight. There is little funding for new initiatives. We must look for opportunities. The Strong Start and International Student initiatives make use of existing facilities, generate funding, provide exposure and create employment.” According to Foster, a board should represent a cross section of the community, a balancing of people with different skill sets and experiences that can come together. “Trustees exercise wisdom, call on their experiences and are there to represent our community values,” said Foster.

Most dogs dig – it’s a very normal thing for them to do…. But usually it’s in the wrong place! In some cases it’s just plain fun to do, 99% of the time it’s because the dog is bored and has nothing else to keep him busy. Some breeds like terriers or Dachshunds are hardwired to dig, it’s their genetic makeup.

EXPERTS What do you do if someone has a nosebleed?

850F 12th Ave., Campbell River 250.287.2310

A nosebleed may start for no obvious reason or may be caused by blowing the nose, and injury to the nose, or in more serious cases, by an indirect injury such as a fractured skull. To treat a nosebleed that is not caused by a head or neck injury, you want to place the casualty in a sitting position with the head slightly forward. Leaning Jennifer Comeau forward allows the blood to drain Branch Manager from the nose and mouth instead of back into the throat. Tell the casualty to compress the entire fleshy part below the bridge of the nose firmly with the thumb and index finger for about 10 minutes or until the bleeding stops. Tell the casualty to breath through their mouth and not to blow their nose for a few hours after the bleeding has stopped. If the bleeding does not stop with this first aid or if it starts again in a short period of time, seek medical help. Do not try to stop a nosebleed resulting from a suspected head or neck injury.

Increase your dog’s exercise and make him tired, he may not feel the need to dig. If you punish him without showing him an alternative behavior, his next move might be to bark! If you keep letting him dig and practice it in the wrong spots, he’ll get really good at it and it’ll become a very hard habit to break....

Why should we buy life insurance for our business partnership?

My doctor has checked my thyroid and tells me it is normal but I don’t think it is. How do naturopathic physicians assess the thyroid function? Over the years the blood parameters for normal thyroid function have been adjusted by Endocrinologists world wide. Dr. Ingrid Pincott ND The normal level for TSH has Naturopathic Physician been dropped from 5.5 to 2-2.5. In my naturopathic practice I find clinically that a TSH of .9-1.5 is better for most women. Most men are fine at 2.5. It is also important to monitor the T4 to make sure that the naturopathic treatment does not cause an over active thyroid. Naturopathic medicine offers great support for balancing the under active thyroid and symptoms such as fatigue, slow mental function, constipation, hair loss and digestion improve.

One solution is to allow your dog a spot to dig in your backyard, build him his own “Digging Pit”, use a kiddies wading pool, fill it with sand or dirt and hide a few treats or some of his favorite toys just under the surface. When you find him digging in the wrong spot, redirect him to his own pit and let him go crazy!

Regular testing of your tank for Nitrates is highly recommended. Nutrafin Nitrate Test Kit used every 2 weeks help you keep track of the health of your tank. When we hear of fish slowly dieing off, our first thought is Nitrates or Ammonia. Most often it’s high nitrates. To avoid this, regular maintenance is required. I’m sure everyone is scraping their glass on a regular Sarah Kirk basis to keep the viewing area clean, but there’s Owner more required to aquarium keeping than that. Every 2 weeks, along with your Nitrate testing, a 25-30% water change is needed. Using a “gravel siphon” every water change helps to keep your gravel clean and pulls out any wasted food, and poop from the gravel. Replace the removed water with fresh water the same temperature as the tank, treat it for chlorine using Aqua Plus which not only removes chlorine but removes chloramines and neutralizes heavy metals, and do any necessary filter maintenance. Filter maintenance should be something you do every month. Since CARBON or CHARCOAL only lasts for 30 days it’s necessary to change that, but your foam and other parts may not need to be done for a few months. Check with us on the best time to change foams, and bio media and any other media you are running in your tank. Remember water changes are VERY VERY important, and without them you WILL lose fish! Next month.....”So, you think you want a salt water tank?”

Now you’ve got your tank cycled, with several fish in the tank and are wondering.. what next?

The classic concern around Halloween is chocolate. It seems that most people now know that chocolate is toxic for dogs. If your dog does eat chocolate you should phone your vet, they will be able to estimate the potential for toxicity based on your dog’s weight, the Dr. Kevin Penner amount of chocolate they ate, and Veterinarian whether the chocolate was milk chocolate, bitter-sweet, or dark. In mild cases there is only anxiety and hyper-activity. In more severe cases there may be vomiting and diarrhea, seizures and tremors, heart problems and possibly death. The most common problem I’ve seen on Halloween is dogs going missing and sometimes getting hit by cars. When fireworks are going off as well as other strange noises some dogs can get very panicked. In a panicked state dogs can climb fences that would usually contain them. I don’t ever recommend leaving dogs unattended outdoors but especially not on a loud, busy night like Halloween. If your dog gets frightened by loud noises then try to stay at home with them to comfort them. Full Service Hospital, Dog Grooming & Boarding Kennel

Webcams are a useful tool for VideoConferencing, using voice-overinternet services like Skype, and for parents checking on children while they are away, either at home or at daycare. But webcams also offer a challenge to parents trying to protect their children’s (and their own) privacy. Besides the Don Andrews & Dave Shook obvious threat of children inadvertently communicating with a child predator, there can also be lesser evils like hackers installing software that allows them to access and control the webcam remotely, or spammers looking for contacts. Tips for Safer Webcam Use: 1. Keep in a common living area and use only when a responsible adult is nearby. 2. Shut it off and cover with lens cap when not in use. 3. Don’t let children use it to communicate with anyone you don’t know personally. 4. Remind your child not to respond to emails or IMs from unknown persons. 5. Position webcam so private information in the background remains private.

The medications covered under the BC Smoking Cessation Program are Zyban, Champix, Thrive NRT Gum (108 pack size only), and Habitrol NRT Patches. Patients will require a prescription from their doctor for Zyban & Champix only. Each fill of a prescription smoking cessation drug is limited to a 28 day maximum supply.

No, I don’t recommend buying a hot tub with pillows molded right into the material. Customers have told Terry Collins me that one of the biggest Owner problems with this method of construction is that the permanent pillows absorbs odors from the bathers and spa water. This is not only unpleasant but also very expensive to correct. As an alternative, Beachcomber has developed comfortable contoured neck recesses without pillows that still gives the customers the option of adding a portable pillow if needed.

It is suggested in the media and there are indicators out the in financial world that Canada could be in line for a housing bubble burst. Of course you never know you are in a bubble until it bursts. So what can you do to insulate Susanne Grundison, yourself? I would look at refinancing Mortgage Specialist your home, while the value is higher, to consolidate any short term debt. Credit cards, personal lines of Credit (unsecured), car loan payments that are high, or personal loans can drain your monthly budgets. In refinancing your home, you can gain access up to 85% of the value, take care of those 18 - 27% credit cards and loans and lines of credit just in case you are going to be impacted through either your income or changes in your life. It is clear we are going to make it through these tough economic times, but with the stock market turmoil, various European countries and the United States still going through these tough times, we are affected up in the north. It is also recommended you really consider not borrowing on short term credit until we see the end. If you have many credit cards, consolidate down to 2, pay down as much as you can. We have some great refinancing options, and a campaign on to cover the legal and appraisal costs. I am here to help.

There really is no universal rating system for hotels. People often judge star ratings based on United States standards. In America the foundation for traditional star ratings came from private companies like Forbes or AAA, which uses diamonds instead of stars to rate properties. In both of these there are rigid criteria to which hotels must adhere, and losing a star can have significant business repercussions. In recent years the larger online booking sites have begun using a combination of site visitor reviews and inspections by staff members, who may use the visit to negotiate with the properties on behalf of their booking site. Some of these sites rely strictly on the average ratings submitted by their thousands of comment contributors. They say that the personal statements by Christina Peterson, readers who have stayed at properties say as much or more than what may come from a single inspection or Flight Centre Associate even multiple visits by a private company. Canadian visitors, for example, will often complain about the extremely small bedrooms of a highly rated property in Europe, basing their opinions on the North American-style travel they may have experienced. However, the reality is that historically Europe has always had considerably smaller rooms than we offer, yet the hotel itself may, in fact, be one of the best in a city. When you leave the shores of this land as we travel through Asia, Europe, Africa, or even South America you are most likely basing your decision on rating programs that are entirely different from one continent to the other, and decidedly different from what we base our decisions on in North America. Companies, and countries, realize that ratings are often the key to increased business. As a result they are looking for the best means that will gain them the economic foothold that comes with the extra star. While it is a bit of a buyer-beware situation, the best solution lies in knowledge and research. Go to a number of sites to gain a sense of what different reviewers say. Find out the standards under which reviews are given in the country, state, or province in which you are considering travel. Then base your analysis on the comparison of properties within that standard. Talk with your travel consultant who may have had feedback from their own clients or through their own experiences at the destination.

Coved ceilings curve down to become walls with no visible separation. To define the walls Evelyn M as separate from the ceilings Interior Designer we could have installed plate rails but instead we achieved the desired result by painting the ceilings white, and then painted a pin stripe of the wall colour just below the cove and then a pin stripe of the ceiling white and then the wall colour down to the floor. We did this using 3 rows of painters tape and the final effect is simple yet effective. To see the finished result go to the portfolio section of our website and look for Danielle’s Living and Dining space.

Some people still think that the space bar is the mo most important key on the keyboard when wh it comes to formatting a document. Sharilyn Irving People use tthe space bar to center text on a pag page, they use the space bar to create ind indents, and they use the space bar to create tables and columns. This, This I guarantee, drives everyone who works in a print shop, copy shop, oor any kind of service bureau that deals with customers files, crazy. The space ba bar is used for one thing and one thing only – to separate two words. In MS Word, Publisher, and every other text publishing/creation program, there the is the ability to format text, which includes centering. Also, you can use the tab button on your computer to create indents and most pro programs these days give you the option of creating tables to make tabl tables for your data, lists and recipes. The reason I stress using these options as opposed to using the space bar is tthat when you take a document in to a service bureau for printing, the t formatting stays truer to what you had intended. This will ens ensure that your prints, copies, etc. will look like what you had in mind rather than have words all over the space.

Your child is never too young to be read to! Reading aloud to babies teaches them about communication; it introduces concepts such as stories, numbers, colours and shapes; it builds listening, memory and vocabulary skills and it gives them information about the world around them. Perhaps Erika Anderson more importantly, it allows babies to hear your voice and strengthens your bond. Children who are read to regularly during their early years have been shown to develop more vocabulary and learn to read sooner than those who were not read to. Some parents start reading to their babies when they are still in the womb. It is believed that after birth the baby will respond to the pattern in your voice from hearing a story book read to them repeatedly before birth and the familiarity can help to calm them. Officials question survey accuracy KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Mayor Charlie Cornfield questions the accuracy of a Chamber of Commerce survey that indicates business owners feel Campbell River is not business friendly. According to the survey, 82 per cent of respondents do not believe the city has strong economic development strategies and 74 per cent feel City Hall does not let it be known that Campbell River is ‘open for business.’ Cornfield said that while the information is important, he doesn’t believe the survey is a fair representation, as only 83 out of around 500 local businesses took part. “To get people’s perceptions is fine. The intent, I think, is good as long as it’s used in the right manner,” Cor nfield said. “In terms of validity, I’m not so sure. Is 83 a representation of the city? No. But it is important to know what people’s opinions are.” Chamber members also feel City Hall does not promote business. A total of 71 per cent of respondents said elected municipal leaders and city staff do not have a pro-business attitude. Coun. Roy Grant said it wasn’t fair to combine council and city

staff in the question. “I can tell you that myself and the rest of council have a probusiness attitude,” Grant said. “Those two categories should not have been combined.” Coun. Ziggy Stewart, a member of the Chamber, said he is very supportive of the business sector but sees both sides’ point of view. “In a lot of aspects I agree with what the Chamber is saying and why they’re trying to get through to City Hall,” Stewart said. “City Hall is a service business and if you’re not serving properly, you’re going to have issues and these issues are now being expressed. Having said that, out of the total number of Chamber members, only so many surveys came in and people are always inclined to talk about the negatives as opposed to the positives.” Grant, a past Chamber of Commerce president, agreed the survey should be put into perspective because of the low response rate. “Generally in these types of surveys, you get the people who aren’t satisfied responding and the ones that are satisfied don’t vote,” Grant said. “If the Chamber of Commerce is saying the city has failed to create a business friendly environment,

THEY SAID IT: “In terms of validity, I’m not so

sure.”

– Charlie Cornfield Mayor

that would lead me to believe that a lot of them that responded are uninformed.” Eighty-six per cent of respondents said Campbell River is not proactive about offering tax increment financing packages or other incentives to attract investment. But Grant said council has implemented tax incentives and had reduced development costs to attract business to the downtown core and have re-zoned three areas of the downtown core to allow higher residential buildings over commercial facilities. “But the biggest thing is we created a re-vitalization tax exemption program bylaw, with input from the Chamber of Commerce, to be applied to the whole downtown area,” Grant said. “Obviously the city has the responsibility to better inform not only the citizens of Campbell River but the business community so they’re aware of some of the programs we’ve initiated to create a business friendly

environment.” Executive director for Chamber of Commerce, Colleen Evans said the Chamber will consult with the city. “Ensuring the views of our members and the local business community are made known to government and other appropriate stakeholders and lobbying in a construct ive, i n d e p e n d e n t manner on behalf of our members is an important role in the Chamber’s mandate,” Evans said. “We will take a progressive role in the coming weeks to influence decision makers.” As part of that process, the Chamber will host an all-candidates business forum on Oct. 26 just ahead of the Nov. 19 civic election. Cornfield said he feels the current council did the best it could with limited resources. “It would be nice to give all things to all people, but we can’t at this time,” Cornfield said. “But we spent $8.5 million on the airport to bring in more tourists and fly people to Vancouver to do business. Isn’t that business friendly? Or the fact we brought in $22 million from outside sources to build badly needed infrastructure (along Highway 19A). Isn’t that business friendly when it attracts people to the city and created jobs for local contrac-

tors?” Cornfield also noted that business taxes went down this year and are low compared to other communities. And he pointed out the creation of the Spirit Square and local programming which brings people down-

town and into local businesses. “We look at the survey as great information but we have to keep it in context,” Cornfield said. “Getting feedback is very important and we use it to help us make better decisions.”

On the positive side, the Chamber survey indicated that 60 per cent of members feel the city has an available skilled work force to meet their needs while 66 per cent agreed municipal services are up to par and affordable.

EDITOR: Alistair Taylor editor@campbellrivermirror.com

Our View

Campbell River is a logical place for Jobs Plan We’re glad Pat Bell, minister of jobs, tourism and innovation, will consider Campbell River as a candidate for a pilot project to generate jobs. We say: Perhaps The provincial government has done scant little else to prop up Victoria will give Campbell River’s economy. Tossing us more than just us a little scrap like this is the least the province can do after we saw a lip service major sawmill and pulp and paper mill close down with nary a peep from the province. For some reason, Campbell River has to live and die by market forces while other communities in

the province facing mill closures in the past have been propped up with millions from the provincial government. Sure, the economy throughout the province was in a slump but it would have been nice to hear something from the provincial Liberals (and the federal Tories for that matter) when TimberWest closed its sawmill and Catalyst shut down the Elk Falls pulp mill after wrangling with its union over re-start proposals. We recognize that Victoria was busy with the Winter Olympics and all but we would have been happy to have received even lip service from the province. But alas, we’re not even entitled

to that. Oh well, it’s a good thing there’s a spirit of go-it-alone-ness developing in Campbell River these days as we redefine our economy in the wake of the loss of two major employers. Maybe the province will see fit to help out by using us as a test case. We certainly are in a position to pursue alternative opportunities. In the end, we may come out stronger than ever but in the meantime, we can only bite our cynical tongues after the minister points out that Campbell River was a logical place to start his jobs action plan tour. This is certainly a community that could use a few of the jobs the province hopes to uncover.

Good point: Outhouses You have to hand it to city management who keep coning up with new ways to ensure our community is seen as a backwater on Vancouver Island. I’m referring to the decision to put two outhouses in front of the Art gallery. I like art and I’ve visited galleries over much of the world, including those in Courtenay, Qualicum and elsewhere in B.C. (These places one might recall compete with Campbell River for permanent residents and tourists ). Oddly, I can’t recall ever seeing visible outhouses marking the entrance to what most people think of as a treasure of the community. This spectacle truly makes Campbell River unique in my experience, and soon there wil be the added enjoyment of watching the “honey wagon” load up at the location and watching the vagrants gather, curse, smoke dope and discuss their latest coutroom adventure. Further, I particularly appreciate the exterior of the buildings. There is no attempt to blend with the Gallery/Tourist office and so the “crappers” are a perfect contrast to the architectural design of the gallery building. They look like they belong at a provincial campsite, which helps maintain the image of Campbell River as backwoods and unsophisticated – which in fact it is. And finally, I can’t help but think of the recently touted Community Plan which spoke of a revitalized downtown core with a “unique and identifiable character” and improved aesthetics. It called for a “focus Continued on A11

TV stunts won’t solve court problems

Tom Fletcher B.C. Views

Premier Christy Clark handed her opponents more ammunition last week with her latest “ready, fire, aim” episode, calling for radio and TV coverage of Stanley Cup riot prosecutions. The day after this half-baked idea was announced, Public Safety Minister Shirley Bond had to sign an executive order directing Crown prosecutors to ask judges for broadcast coverage. Prosecutors have enough trouble getting convictions in our stumbling, delay-plagued court system without spending time on TV applications for minor cases. Bond referred reporters to the long list of conditions under which broadcasting may be done from court. In

the unlikely event a judge consents to broadcast access, nothing can be aired until at least two hours after a morning or afternoon session has been adjourned. Absurdly, everyone involved, from lawyers to witnesses to defendants, has a veto over their image or voice being broadcast. No accused people would consent to that. The rules are designed to fail. I’m all in favour of televising court, not so much to shame perpetrators as to show what a cozy little closed shop it is. I recently sat in on the plea-bargained sentence for James Roy Taylor, the former Fraser Health technology manager caught with his hand in the cookie jar for the second time in his career.

Crown and defence lawyers exchanged legalese barely above a whisper, congratulating each other for the elegance of the tap on the wrist they were giving Taylor for accepting multiple benefits in exchange for approving fraudulent invoices for a doctor supplying questionable electronic health services. Taylor has to do community service, pay back the lolly he admits accepting, and take a reduced pension on account of being fired as a crook. Poor fellow. Anyone who has sat in court for long sees the endless parade of adjournments and excuses that routinely substitute for progress. Years ago I publicized the efforts a pioneer-

ing group of youth court observers, ordinary citizens horrified by the sluggish pace of proceedings. Day after day they saw smirking teens watch lawyers compare schedules before heading off to lunch. Those citizens’ efforts led to a diversion program for first-time offenders to provide timely consequences for first-time offenders. Don’t take it from me on the state of our courts. Gov. Gen. David Johnston, a law professor before being appointed the Queen’s representative in Canada, gave a speech in August in which he ripped lawyers for violating their social contract with the public with unacceptable delays. Outhouses: Poorly thought Continued from A10 on form and location” in future development, achieved in part by increased character signage and benches. This was not a step in that direction at all, although surely some city manager will now argue that we have in fact added signs (i.e. “Mens” and “Ladies”) and seating (albeit with holes in the seats and mass of excrement underneath.). I am so discouraged with the poor management decisions made for this town and I doubt that I’m alone. The town and its citizens need a leader and council who will exercise oversight and demand accountability. For me, this election is not so much about taxes, it is about responsibility, admitting and dealing with past decisions, and putting an end to the status quo which for the past four years has been to allow poorly thought out projects to proceed, and then defend the mistakes and ignore the consequences. Fletcher: Give police on the spot penalty power

Continued from A10 “We enjoy a monopoly to practise law,” Johnston told the Canadian Bar Association meeting. “In return, we are duty-bound to serve our clients competently, to improve justice and to continugously create the good. tThat’s the deal.”

to court. Perhaps the government could take a cue from their recent revision of impaired driving laws, giving police the ability to assess fines and impound vehicles on the spot. Perhaps by the time the next big drunken riot starts to brew, cops

would actually be able to offer consequences. Going around the court system is their best bet these days. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com tfletcher@blackpress. ca

A brand-new ‘green’ building is slated for development along the Island Highway. Council approved a building permit for a 52-unit multi-family residential condominium development at 220 South Island Highway during last week’s Tuesday city council meeting. The four-storey devel-

opment is expected to include an underground parking lot with a green roof over the parkade. “The proposed development will provide 1,450 metres squared of outdoor recreational space onsite which equates to approxim at e ly 2 7 m e t re s squared per unit,” said Ian Buck, city planner, in a report to council. “Private balconies for each unit are proposed

in addition to the communal outdoor space.” The condos will be located within a risk slope area but do not pose a threat to the landscape. “Geotechnical reports in 2006, 2007 and 2011 confirm that the current location is not a slope stability concern,” said Denise Kors of Kors Development Services. The current vegetation along the slope

on the top of the bank behind the building will remain intact but there will be new landscaping around the development, primarily with grassy areas behind the property and shrubs and trees along the front, said Buck. The development is scheduled to be completed in six phases with phase one including the construction of eight units.

Jobs plan: First Nations want in Continued from A1 agriculture plan, transportation plan, and an energy and emissions plan. At the Immigrant Welcome Centre, there are strategies in place to attract international students. “We are ready, look at all the plans and studies we’ve done – we have all this information that’s out there, we’re ready to go,” Cornfield said. “We really encourage you to make us that pilot project. We’ve got the people, we’ve got the data and we’re ready to go, ready to git er done.” Bell said the policies outlined in the

new jobs plan will help Campbell River. The key initiatives include adding more staff to deal with the backlog of per mit applications, opening up a new major investments office to move large projects through in a more timely fashion, harmonizing the provincial and federal Environmental Assessment process and taking a different approach to dealing with First Nations. John Henderson, Campbell River Indian Band councillor, said First Nations have been marginalized and left out of the work force. “First Nations need

to be at the table in all sectors,” Henderson said. “We need to talk about how to build the economy together, that’s what we need to talk about here – how to make the province survive. “How to make First Nations survive. I hope the next steps we take are real jobs.” North Island MLA Claire Trevena was also critical of the plan and said it does not address the needs of Vancouver Island. “There is no value added in this jobs plan and that is what is very damaging for the North Island,” Trevena said after the jobs plan was first unveiled. “Having

value added is what makes a community.” Trevena also questions whether there will really be any new jobs created in Campbell River. “Having targets is very important but you’ve got to make sure that you have the jobs,” she said. The plan projects that the Vancouver Island/ Coast region can expect 152,600 job openings in the next 10 years. It also sets targets of having B.C. among the top two provinces in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth by 2015 and among the top two provinces in new job growth within the same time period.

Enrich Someone’s Life Enrich the life of an adult learner, become a tutor. The experience will change your life! Unfortunately, one in four British Columbians cannot read this sentence. More than half of working age people in BC have difficulty reading, which makes it difficult for them to be a part of our changing economy. Be a part of the solution! The CR Literacy Association has students who need tutors. Volunteer tutors work one-on-one with adults and youth wanting to improve their English skills. Everyone is welcome! More tutors are needed for these programs. Adult literacy tutors work with adults whose skills range from learning sound-letter relationships for the first time to reading at a junior high level. The Computer Literacy program for Seniors uses peer tutors who focus on very basic computer skills. ESL tutors work with youth and adults who are learning English as their second language, (reading, writing, and pronunciation). All the above programs are free of charge, thanks to funding from the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia. Training for volunteer tutors will be held at the end of the month. If you are interested in becoming a tutor for either program phone 250 923 1275 or email Julina Bastock at info@ literacyforall.ca for more information.

2011 Song of the Year nominee debuts in Campbell River Ellisa Hartman is many things - musician, scuba diver, lover of life, friend, gardener, and dog owner. This talented young singer/songwriter is leaping into a highprofile role in the Canadian independent music scene. Her incredibly honest presence, unique voicing and quirky instrumental timing shed new light on the folk/ pop genre. She will be performing at the Carriage Room at the Royal Coachman on Friday at 6:30 p.m. This past spring, Hartman received a nomination for “Song of the Year” at the 2011 Vancouver Island Music Awards held in June. The award went home with internationally acclaimed, Irish Rovers, but the experience was inspiring and gave her more drive to push forward with her songwriting. She has recently released an EP titled, Making War, and is currently working in the studio on her new full length album. Hartman traded her busy city life in Victoria for a peaceful and community oriented life here in Campbell River in September of 2010. She teaches music two days a week

going to showcase her songwriting with the accompaniment of guitar, played by herself, piano, and flute. Fans of Sarah Mclachlan, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, and even Taylor Swift will easily succumb to her artistry and performance. This is going to be a concert that the whole family will enjoy. At 24, she has written a portfolio of significant songs that would be the envy of many established musicians. Her vocal prowess is enhanced by experience in a range of instruments with a unique form of finger-style acoustic guitar. Her ability to blend moments of unorthodox time signature into her songs make musical points that few can match. Enjoy an evening of story telling and music as Hartman invites you into her life. Wolves devour the Scorpions The Timberline Wolves opened their regular season with a 41-0 victory over the visiting Gulf Islands Scorpions on Saturday. Timberline started slowly before quarterback Dylan Tucker connected with wide receiver Greg Perry on a 63-yard pass-and-run play late in the first quarter. Rob Vlaj then added a 32-yard run to give the Wolves their first score of the game. “We got off to a slow start, Gulf Islands played our run well, and our short passing game was out of sync, then we started to exploit their sideline with deep passes and finally got moving,” said Wolves Head Coach Martin Jaunzemis. The combination of Tucker and Perry would account for 176 yards on six receptions and two touchdown scores, of the Wolves’ 319 total passing yards. Perry had a standout game

for the Wolves, accounting for two touchdowns on offence and an interception on defence for another score. Vlaj also had an outstanding game for the Wolves. Vlaj scored twice on runs of 63 and 32 yards for Timberline and also returned a punt 70 yards to score before it was called back for an unnecessary block in the back. “Rob had a great game, three scores on three touches, it is unfortunate his punt return came back to the point of foul. Our guys need to be more disciplined and realize when it is time to back off,” said Coach Jaunzemis. Next up for the Wolves are the GP Vanier Towhees, Sat., October 15 at 1:25 p.m. at Timberline. “The Vanier game is always a highlight of the season, the football rivalry between the towns goes back well before my time,” said Jaunzemis.

Action plan helps C.R. families with long-distance caregiving Caring for a person with dementia from a long distance presents many challenges for Campbell River residents. “It is impor tant to develop a plan of action,” says Jane Hope, the Alzheimer S o c i e t y o f B . C . ’s regional support and education coordinator. Caregivers should take some basic steps before visiting the person with dementia, she says, to create a plan that best meets their loved one’s needs. “Talk to family members, friends, neighbours, their physician, health agencies and other people who are in contact with the person,” says Hope. The Society’s handout, Assessing the Needs of the Person with Dementia, is an easy guide and is available online at www. alzheimerbc.org Caregivers should identify local services n e e d e d a n d m a ke appointments with service providers. “Communicate clearly what you are hoping to achieve. Be prepared with questions you would like to have answered, and the services you are seeking.“ If possible, send an e-mail prior to the appointment. Hope says caregivers should divide the responsibilities of care with other family members, whenever possible. Then communicate regularly with all individuals who are helping with the person with dementia’s care. More suggestions and information on long-distance caregiving are available at the free monthly meetings of the Society’s family caregiver support group in Campbell River. They take place on the first Thursday night of each month. Contact Hope toll-free at 1-800-4622833 or email jhope@ alzheimerbc.org for more details. The support group serves as a place to exchange information, support and friendship with others whose lives are affected by dementia. www.alzheimerbc.org
