Two new downtown toilets are are getting mixed reviews downtown because of their placement in a highly visible location next to the Art Gallery and their lack of aesthetic design.

Downtown toilets take a lot of crap RENÉE ANDOR CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Two outdoor toilets are raising a stink before they’re even in use. The toilets were installed in front of the Visitor Centre and Art Gallery building on Oct. 6 and will be ready for public use by Oct. 24 at the latest, but already some people are not happy that they’re there.

“They’re just totally, totally inappropriate,” said Still Water Books and Art owner Ruth McMonagle, whose business is located near the toilets. “They’re embarrassing, they don’t match the style (of the Visitor Centre and Art Gallery), anybody can see who’s going in and out.” Campbell River resident Howard Milner wrote a letter to the editor in Wednesday’s Mirror questioning the aesthetic design

Art Gallery executive director Jeanette Taylor said the building closed its public washroom about a year and a half ago due to abuse. “We had a lot of street people using that washroom,” Taylor said adding that it was probably

A group planning to run a slate of candidates in the upcoming civic election has disbanded. “Fusion is dissolved,” said Walter Jakeway, founder of the group, on Wednesday when he announced his intention to run for mayor. Fusion was going to run seven candidates in the Nov. 19 election, in order to completely fill the council table, but potential candidates dropped out within the last two weeks. Jakeway said one member had to go to Calgary for work, one decided to go back to school and another wasn’t in a position financially to run. Jakeway rounded out the list of candidates. “We had four people and this all happened within the last couple

Toolbox stolen

History in their hands

A large red fifteen drawer toolbox was stolen on August 11 from a garage in the 3800 block of Barclay Road. About $7,000 worth of tools were in the box. The name ‘Arctic Powell’ was etched into the box. Some of the tools have ‘LGN’ etched onto them. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Campbell River and District Association for Community Living executive director Greg Hill (centre) hands over about 50 years worth of history to Museum at Campbell River’s archive collection. He also noted the city plans to change the landscaping and exterior of the washrooms, but he said the overall theme has not been finalized yet. As for the location of the toilets, city facilities and supply management general manager Dave Morris said the toilets needed to be near the Visitor Centre, Spirit Square and the library so they could be easily accessed by the public. “The approximate location was at the request of the Visitor Infor mation Centre and Art Gallery staff as it provides close ser-

vice to those attending the building, and Spirit Square, said Morris. “The precise location was deter mined by proximity to water and sewer connections. Two portable toilets are located around the side of the building and are not as visible from the entry, but Morris said the water and sewer connections would not allow for installation of the new toilets there. “That location is beyond our water and sewer servicing range, Morris explained. According to Morris, the new toilets will cost $90,000 in total, including the proposed aesthetic upgrades. They will be fully serviced with heat, auto-flush toilets, hands-free sinks, and automatic locks to secure them after hours. They will be open from 6:30 a.m.10 p.m. daily except when special evening events are on at Spirit Square. The toilets will be cleaned every night by a contracted janitorial firm. experience but bonded over similar principles and a desire to make changes at City Hall. Fusion’s platfor m included a zero per cent tax rate increase for the next three years, expanding the role of Rivercorp and implementing a program to allow residents to pay taxes in monthly instalments. Jakeway said the intent in running a slate was “to offer a balanced selection of experience, well-qualified candidates to handle the often difficult job.

downtown security guard will check them approximately every hour and report any problems to the city. Problems are a possibility as library manager Timothy Skye has problems with people using the library washrooms right now which are directly across the road. “We get people who are intoxicated who are on drugs. We can’t control who comes in and uses them, said Skye. He said things have been better since security guards started patrolling the downtown area a couple of years ago, but problems do persist. He is happy that there will now be another washroom option in the area. “I give kudos to the city for this initiative; it’s something that’s needed downtown, said Skye.

mill, said he has the skills to be an effective mayor. “Working with a leadership team (council) and overseeing a physical plant like the city is a natural role for me, similar to the the duties that I handled successfully for much of the last few decades in the private sector,” said Jakeway who is currently the president of Campbell River Storage Warehouses. If elected, Jakeway said he will work to keep taxes stable and attract new business. “My focus will be on a fresh, energetic future, a clear positive direction and, if the new council agrees, working within strict financial constraints and lower costs,” Jakeway said. “We need to develop a receptive atmosphere for potential businesses moving here; they need to see we have a genuine, receptive atmosphere.” Jakeway said currently the city is anything but and points to the recent Chamber of Commerce survey – which indicates members feel the city is not business friendly – to prove his point. “I agree with the sur-

vey completely,” Jakeway said. He said business taxes need to be lower in order to compete with other communities, such as Courtenay, for new industry. “Business taxes just aren’t encouraging people to come here,” Jakeway said. “The city is just not receptive to business which is what the survey is saying. I have three adult children and they can’t work here because there’s no jobs here. Something’s wrong.” Jakeway said the city needs a fresh start. “When it comes to the shooting gallery, the mayor is always the target,” Jakeway said. “But election day, Nov.19, can be a positive turning point for Campbell River if the city voters choose a majority of new council candidates who have a financially responsible, benevolent, yet common sense approach. Don’t let the opportunity slip away. Seize the day.” Jakeway’s announcement makes it a fourperson race for mayor with Michel Rabu and current councillors Roy Grant and Ziggy Stewart in the mix.

Moglove seeks second term Campbell River lawyer and incumbent councillor Claire Moglove will run for re-election in the Nov. 19 civic election. Moglove hopes to serve a second term as a councillor for the City of Campbell River. “The last three years have been extremely educational and have provided me with the experience and knowledge to help make a difference in our city going forward. Everyone who puts their name forward to run for council loves Campbell River and sees the incredible future opportunities for our city. It comes down to who has the skill set to help achieve those opportunities,” Moglove said. “In addition to my role on council, I have been a city representative at the Strathcona Regional District, the ComoxStrathcona Regional Hospital Board, the Strathcona Gardens Commission and the Comox-Strathcona Regional Solid Waste Board. “This experience has widened my understanding of various regional issues which affect our city – the new hospital and the landfill issues in particular.” Moglove said she feels she was able to make a difference in her first term on council. “I believe I have made a significant contribution to council during my first term, in particular in helping guide the issue of a new hospital through challenging political channels, asking relevant questions in relation to a host of issues that faced our council, and by researching the policies and efforts of other communities,” Moglove said. “I have been careful to make sure I have a sound understanding of the issues as they arise, both at the city council table and at the regional boards to which I have been appointed. I will continue to do so should I be re-elected.” Moglove is particularly proud of her recent election to represent Campbell River at the Association of Vancouver Island Coastal Communities. Moglove said that going forward, the city must focus on expanding the tax base

Claire Moglove

t h ro u g h e c o n o m i c development and encouraging new residents and businesses to move to Campbell River. “In my view, the only sustainable way to address declining tax revenues and rising costs is through the expansion of the tax base. I am pleased to say that the city’s economic development ar m, Rivercor p, is emerging as a vibrant and hands-on eco-

nomic development office. During my first two years on council, I was not so sure Rivercorp was the answer, but with a new and expanded Board of Directors and a new CAO, I am confident of its future success in bringing greatly needed economic development to Campbell River,” Moglove said. “The other overriding issue for the next council is to continue to address taxation levels, reserves, financial policies and financial planning processes. With a new city manager in the past year and a new chief financial officer in the past six months, we have taken concrete steps in the right direction, but more needs to be done.”

FIREWORKS RESTRICTIONS The City of Campbell River has restricted the sale and discharge of consumer Įreworks. To obtain a permit to discharge Įreworks, people must parƟcipate in a training session oīered at the No. 1 Firehall, 675 13th Ave. (corner 13th Avenue and Dogwood Street).

January – Red Washington Meritage The Region: The Red Mountain AVA is Washington’s smallest, at approximately 3,600 acres. Grape growing conditions are almost textbook perfect: slope, exposure, weather conditions, good air drainage, large day/night temperature swings, gravelly soil with high calcium carbonate content and high pH and the nearby Yakima River to moderate temperature extremes—there could hardly be more positive flavour influences to grapes grown here. The Wine: A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot, this wine features great extract, deep colour and intense aromatics of dark berry fruit, cassis, peppery spice, cedar and smoke. The seductive nose of this wine foreshadows magnificent texture and flavour, including dark berries, liquorice, vanilla and warm brown spices that glide across the palate. The texture and mouthful of the wine offers up silky tannins and a velvety smooth structure. The Food: Marinated & Grilled Flank Steak with Blue Café De Paris Butter. Ageing: The complexity and structure of this wine will require three to six months to unwind, and it will continue improving for several years. Due to the ripe tannins it will also benefit from decanting before serving. Sweetness Code: 0 (dry)

South African Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon The Region: Known as ‘Valley of Wine and Roses’, South Africa’s Robertson Valley has a very hot climate with minimal rainfall—less than a foot per year. Luckily the calcareous red clay loam and clay Karoo soils have excellent water holding capacity, and the gentle slopes and varied microclimates allow for precision planting to maximise grape quality. The Wine: Sauvignon Blanc has wild, herbaceous flavours and tart, grapefruit-like character, which shows strongly in the young wine, while Sémillon has flavours of honeydew melon and sweet honey that take a bit longer to come out. Together the two grapes make a lush, balanced wine with great up-front fruit and a satisfying, rich finish. The Food: Pan Roasted Digby Bay Scallop, Jewel Yam Purée, White Truffle Oil & Salsa Verdé. Ageing: The citrus notes of the Sauvignon Blanc make this wine tempting to drink right away and after three months the Sémillon will rise up to give a mellower white wine. It will improve for at least a year, giving deeper flavours of melon and honey as it goes. Sweetness Code: 0 (dry)

February – Red California Petite Sirah/Zinfandel (Limited Edition 2005) The Region: Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Amador County is sometimes called ‘California’s Piedmont’. With vineyards running from 250 to 2900 feet in elevation, and summer temperatures ranging from 80 to over 100 degrees F, the excellent growing conditions have encouraged diversified plantings. The Wine: Grippingly tannic, bold and deeply coloured Petite Sirah complements the jamminess of Zinfandel, taming the abundant blueberries and blackberries with a hint of dark cherry and vanilla. Full-bodied with a lingering palate and peppery spice, this is a wine of unprecedented power and length. The Food: Apple Cider Brined Thick-Cut BBQ Pork Chops. Ageing: This is a wine that shows best with ageing. After one year the blackberries will come out, and at two years will tame the tannin’s grip, showing the black pepper and rich dark fruits. Sweetness Code: 0 (dry)

March – White German Traminer Spatlese The Wine: Tramher is the parent of the more familiar Gewurztraminer and Spatlese is a German wine term meaning "late harvest" indicating a wine made from fully mature grapes that are picked at least 7 days after normal harvest so they are riper and have higher sugar levels. This is a gently goldencoloured wine, unmistakable in its heady aromatic intensity, with a pungent fragrance of lychee, tropical fruit and rose petals. Its flavours are ample, lusciously fruity and spicy. The food: Peach and Blueberry Cobbler

April – Red The Wine: Tempranillo are deep blue-black berries, high in colour and extract, with delicate aromas. Cabernet Sauvignon's small berries yield high tannins and intense structure, while Monastrell acids grip, earthiness and ripe red fruit. lush, tannic and complex with intense black fruit flavours of black cherry, raspberry, black currant and notes of plums and tobacco, the wine takes gracefully to oak, adding layers of vanilla, cedar and rich coffee nuances. ‘Wisdom teeth and whether or not they need to be removed is a common question at our office. If there is not room for wisdom teeth ly suggested that they be removed. If to erupt into the mouth it is commonly left impacted or stuck they can cause decay on the second molar, a cyst can develop around them or they can lead to infection if the gum tissue around them collects food and plaque. If taken out at an early age healing occurs faster and future problems can be avoided. Call our office for a consultation should you have any questions about wisdom teeth and whether they should be removed.’ Dr. Dennis and his friendly staff would like to welcome all current and new patients to their new location in the Quinsam Professional Centre

Enrich Someone’s Life Enrich the life of an adult learner, become a tutor. The experience will change your life! Unfortunately, one in four British Columbians cannot read this sentence. More than half of working age people in BC have difficulty reading, which makes it difficult for them to be a part of our changing economy. Be a part of the solution! The CR Literacy Association has students who need tutors. Volunteer tutors work one-on-one with adults and youth wanting to improve their English skills. Everyone is welcome! More tutors are needed for these programs. Adult literacy tutors work with adults whose skills range from learning sound-letter relationships for the first time to reading at a junior high level. The Computer Literacy program for Seniors uses peer tutors who focus on very basic computer skills. ESL tutors work with youth and adults who are learning English as their second language, (reading, writing, and pronunciation). All the above programs are free of charge, thanks to funding from the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia. Training for volunteer tutors will be held at the end of the month. If you are interested in becoming a tutor for either program phone 250 923 1275 or email Julina Bastock at info@ literacyforall.ca for more information.

T h e Va n c o u v e r Island Health Authority (VIHA) encourages everyone to protect themselves and their family from the flu. Flu shots are now available to help prevent three different strains of influenza, including H1N1 which killed thousands of North Americans just two years ago. “In February of this year, the World Health Organization started working on predicting what will be circulating this flu season and what the components of the vaccine should be,” said Dr. Charmaine Enns, North Island Medical Health Officer. “We don’t know absolutely for sure what will circulate until it circulates but in the last few years they’ve been very good at matching.” Enns said even if there is not a perfect match, there is still a component of cross protection, meaning the vaccine, which takes six months to create, is still effective. Enns said although VIHA is not expecting an out of the ordinary flu season, she recommends getting vaccinated before the flu

Most people would probably be eligible.” Enns said those who are not eligible through the publiclyfunded program can still get a flu shot by contacting their family doctor, local pharmacy or walk-in clinic. Our View

Plan your escape, fire doesn’t wait Except for those who are affected directly, either through unhappy circumstance or because they are family, friends or neighbours, fire department volunteers mostly go unnoticed. In reality, however, they are the We say: Draw unsung heroes of our communiup and practice ties. a family fire Every time firefighters go to a fire call-out there is the potential for evacuation plan injury or worse. Undoubtedly, they go into these hazardous situations because of their sense of duty and because they want to make a difference in the lives of the folks in their communities.

Between those call-outs, however, is where the real work is being done to make our communities safer. Firefighters train on a weekly basis to ensure they protect themselves and their teammates from injury in firefighting scenarios. They also take numerous courses to learn the best way to deal with emergency situations. We should take the time to tell them we appreciate everything they do for us, whether it’s through a simple statement of gratitude when we greet them, or by supporting them as fire department society volunteers, or shelling out a few dollars at all of their fundraisers. We suspect, however, our firefighters would appre-

ciate it the most if we practised fire safety not only this week during National Fire Prevention Week, but also every day of the year. This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Protect your Family from Fire.” One of the most important things we can do to protect our families is to draw up and practise using a family fire evacuation plan. We should also ensure we have extinguishers and smoke detectors, and get into the habit of checking the smoke alarm batteries once a month. Good point: Generosity Often I feel somewhat like T.S. Eliot when I contemplate the future of our world: “This was a decent, godless people. Their only monument the asphalt road and a thousand lost golf balls.” And then I once again encounter the generosity of spirit that is alive and well in our community and I am encouraged. The Mennonite churches in Black Creek organized a famine relief BBQ to support those suffering from the famine in East Africa this recently and the community responded. In a few hours, we received approximately $4,500 in donations and we are most grateful! One only has to pick up our local paper and look for this spirit and you will find it. Corporations, service clubs, charitable organizations and individuals are so often at work trying to make our world a better place for one another and future generations. This was the case on the weekend as many people dug deeper, including small businesses such as Devonshire Farms, Little Orca Bakery, Comox Valley Bakehouse and Stonecroft Farm, to support those suffering in East Africa. I particularly appreciate Marine Harvest Canada for their donation of the salmon for the BBQ (and their suggestion for an excellent marinade recipe). I have noticed them behind the scenes supporting Continued on A11

We’re in desparate need of a new way of doing things

Alistair Taylor Out On A Limb

So, the municipal election is kind of, sort of officially underway. Although, it’s been underway since June when the Twitter King Sean Smith announced the worst kept secret in Campbell River, that he was seeking a council seat. Since then we’ve had a smattering of announcements about who is running and who is seeking re-election. It’s been an interesting “campaign” already. We’ve had two ad hoc think tanks come out with philosophical approaches to choosing a municipal government. I’m talking about the Fusion group which proposed a slate of candidates and the Brian Stamp group which just wants you to consider what would make a good mayor. Shortly after writing that sentence, however, I heard that Fusion has dis-

solved. Good. Of the two, I preferred the Stamp group’s approach any way. I don’t think a slate of candidates is a good thing. It’s a good thing that it’s unlikely they would all get elected because it would create the undemocratic scenario of a council of likeminded councillors and mayor. You’ve all heard the term “the tyranny of Parliament” I’m sure. It refers to the fact that the parliamentary system in essence creates a dictatorship because a majority can essentially do whatever it wants. Democracy is best served by a minority government. On city council, we need a diversity of opinions and we need councillors that can tear apart proposals to look at them from every point of view possible. If they all think the same way

and vote from one perspective, then ideas are going to overlooked and we’ll get a narrow solution to our problems. This is not the time for narrow solutions. So, sorry, I’m not in favour of a slate of candidates. It looks like we won’t have to worry about it anyway because Fusion has dissolved for reasons other than the viability of the concept. I do have a problem with the Stamp group proposal too, however. I think it’s a sound idea, outlining qualities that would make a successful mayor. The problem is agreeing on what makes a successful mayor. I just don’t agree that we need a CEO to run our city. That puts the emphasis on economics and, sorry, but to me a city is a home, a place to live. Not a business.

I know that’s bordering on heresy in the current political climate and these times of declining municipal revenues and tight budgets but it’s more important to me to have someone who will create a community that’s liveable. I want city streets that are clean and people oriented. I want places for children to play. Yes, even with an aging populace. We still have lots of families here and thousands of children. The grey wave hasn’t replaced the kids yet. Look after the kids and you create a liveable community – for seniors as well. Safe streets, green space, recreational facilities, parks, accessible waterfront, family-friendly transit. Which doesn’t mean I don’t think services for seniors are important. Continued on A11

Generosity: Reach out to vulnerable Continued from A10 so many community events in the past. Thank you so much! It truly is the case

that we strengthen our own community as we reach out to help communities less fortunate than ours.

Taylor: Quality of life our big asset Continued from A10 There is a tendency in social and political debate these days to be one-issue oriented. You’re seeing that in a handful of candidates debates coming up – Campbellton, for example. They’re good to get thorough debate on important topics but you can’t be voting for candidates based on what they’re going to do about the one issue you’re passionate about. You have to include the whole spectrum of life in a community. You can be family focused and still want services for seniors. The two aren’t exclusive. And that’s why I don’t want a CEO in charge. All he wants to do is maximize revenues. Nothing against maximizing revenues, I just don’t want a cold-hearted mercenary CEO in charge. I’d rather have somebody’s mom. It’s interesting how the tax revenue debate dominates city hall. What are we going to do to generate city revenue? We are obsessed with it. Of course, we

have to pay for our services from somewhere but if all we’re focused on is cash then we’ll be a cold-hearted community. And I don’t think that’s necessarily the best way to create opportunity. I’m sorry but I tend to take a theatre-oriented approach to this – i.e., give away all your opening night tickets so you’ve got a full house and let the audience go away excited about the product and talk it up amongst their circle of friends and acquaintances. What? You say. Yes,

give away tax incentives to start up businesses. Tax holidays. Give people such a good deal to set up here and fill the house. Then they’ll tell two friends, etc. Because you know that when people come here, they’ll go away impressed. I love what Discovery Trekking Outfitters owner Leslie Hanes says in today’s “The Tale of Two Cities” supplement to the Mirror. Her internationally-successful clothing retail business only gets about five per cent of her business from

locals. So why does she stay here? It’s simple, the article says, “A deck with a view and quality of life.” I love it. I’m voting for somebody who wants to maintain that quality of life. That’s our biggest asset. Get people to live here because it’s a great place to live and businesses will be generated to serve them. As will tax revenues. So after all this, I hope I haven’t generated what I’ve dubbed a Don Cherry debate. You now, a rant about

some out-in-left-field issue filled with bombastic insults and logic so contradictory it’s hard to know what point is being made. I do like that different groups and various candidates are coming out with ideas and philosophical approaches. That’s a good thing. Keep the ideas coming because we’re in desperate need of a new way of doing things in this city. Alistair Taylor is editor of the Campbell River Mirror.

Schools readying for tremor RENÉE ANDOR

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

How safe are Campbell River children in an earthquake? School officials are asking themselves this question after a 6.4 magnitude earthquake was felt in Campbell River on Fri. Sept. 9. “We had an event. We’re looking at what we did, and we’re trying to get lessons learned so we can do better when the next event occurs, said Will Dirksen, health and safety officer for school district 72. Dirksen suggests having hard hats close by for students in wheel chairs because they can’t duck and cover, purchasing some portable toilets, and lightening emergency kits by moving bottled water to different locations. Dirksen also pointed out that the earthquake in September was on a sunny day but the weather may be different next time,

so he wants to practice building emergency shelters. “One of my concerns is if we have an earthquake and it’s inclement weather and so we have to quickly try to get a shelter in place, said Dirksen. The school district already has tarps, but Dirksen wants to practice setting up shelters, and take photographs so that there’s a model for others to follow if necessary. Meanwhile, school district 72 secretary/ treasurer Peter Neale said the district needs a number of structural seismic upgrades on its schools. “Currently we have eight schools that are on our seismic plan that need to be upgraded to prepare for a seismic event, said Neale. “That represents $18 million in seismic upgrades that we’ve identified as a requirement for our schools. According to Neale,

$5.7 million of the upgrades needed are at Phoenix School. Neale said funding for seismic upgrades is one of the advocacy points the district continues to talk to the Ministry of Education about; the Ministry provided funding for a “whole slew of upgrades a few years ago, but hasn’t provided any recently. The district also identified a need for non-str uctural upgrades, like replacing ceiling tiles and shelving, worth about $1 million. Since 2009, the district has spent about $200,000 on these upgrades. Meanwhile, Campbell River schools will be taking part in the Great British Columbia ShakeOut, which happens at 10:20 a.m. on Oct. 20. Students will duck, cover, and hold in th e mass earthquake drill to increase earthquake awareness and preparedness.

Helen Moats says good-bye to district RENÉE ANDOR

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

After a six year stint, school board chair Helen Moats will not

be running for re-election. Moats was a school trustee for the first three years, and has been chair for the last

three. She said it was a tough decision for her to make as she found her work as the chair positive and meaning-

ful, but she wants to have more time in her life for other things. “I have other responsibilities in my life that take a lot of time, so

that was the ultimate decision maker, or deal breaker for me,” said Moats. Although she will not be involved with the

school board anymore, Moats won’t be fading into the shadows of the community. She organizes a concert series on Quadra TELUS AUTHORIZED DEALERS

Island, is an accompanist for Campbell River Singers, and sings in Island Voices Chamber Choir. Moats also has some “educational irons in the fire,” as she is an education coordinator for the Hakai Beach Institute, which is a non-profit teaching, research and conference facility on Calvert Island, north of Vancouver Island. During her time on the school board Moats has seen some changes take place. For example, almost every position at the district level has a new person working in it since five years ago, and Moats said she’s happy with the current team. “I feel confident going forward with the choices we’ve made in terms of our educational leadership in the district,” explained Moats. Also, the board put a strategic plan in place a couple of years ago, and Moats said it was a huge accomplishment as it helps guide the board in all of its decisions. The four goals of the plan are: to create a sustainable high-quality secondary school model; review and enhance services and supports to special needs, Aboriginal and vulnerable learners; facilitate increased community connections and involvement in education; and increase environmental awareness and stewardship throughout the organization. “It’s provided focus within the district,” said Moats. “That guidance has been really positive within the district, and has guided a lot of decisions that have been made, and continue to be made.” Her biggest frustration while on the school board has been the funding pressures. Moats continually wrote letters to the higher-ups to advocate for more funding, and funding that’s predictable and sustainable for public education. While she said it’s a slow process, she believes progress is being made. “It feels glacial, sometimes you feel it’s one forward and two back, but I don’t feel that it was entirely useless work,” said Moats.

elementary numbers start to rise,” said Longridge. “ B u t we ’ re s t i l l going to see an overall decline, particularly in secondary.” Although the final

tally is not yet in, last year’s projected enrollment total for the district in 2011/2012 is 5,249. And Longridge said the numbers appear to be quite close to what was predicted. The total projected enrollment for 2012/2013 is 5,147 students and 5,097 students for 2013/2014. This school year the grade configuration was changed in anticipation of less secondary students.

“ T h a t ’s why we looked at reconfiguring and having that reconfiguration process last year, in keeping our secondary schools viable and examining how we’re providing middle school education as well,” explained Longridge. Elementary schools now have kindergarten to Grade 5 students, middle schools have Grade 6-8 and secondary schools have Grade 9-12.

Bell’s drifting, comfortable songs Call him the bestkept secret in Canadian music. Wi n n i p e g - b a s e d singer/songwriter Steve Bell has enjoyed serious commercial success over a prolific solo career that has spanned two decades, but he has flown rather under the radar in terms of music industry and media recognition. His large and loyal fan base has continued to grow, here and in the U.S., and with his new album, Kindness, Bell is reaching out to the wider audience his eloquent and heartfelt material deserves. “Bell seems to side-

Wren’s song is a melodious multi-noted symphony Christine Scott Island Wild

“'Twas once upon a time, when Jenny Wren was young, So daintily she danced and so prettily she sung…” ( N u r s e r y r hy m e :

When Jenny Wren was young) The gaily coloured wrens of my childhood imagination look nothing like the mousy

brown bird of reality, but one phrase from the rhyme rings true: the wren’s song is truly a melodious, multinoted symphony. Ounce for ounce, the

wren delivers more song than any other North American songbird, regardless of season. No winter nature is complete without the

bubbly chattering of a winter wren … arguably winter’s most accomplished singer. One attempt at putting the song on paper looks a bit like: "keree-kereeCHARLES BRANDT/SPECIAL TO THE MIRROR

keree, chair, chair, chair, deedle, deedle, deedle, tur, tur, tur, keree", "tic-keer." One of my most satisfying outdoor experiences was seeing a rock wren gobble down a yellowjacket wasp! It’s easy to love a little bird that dines on wasps, insects and whatever they can snatch from spider webs. Short in stature, like most wrens, the rock wren is a gray and white streaked, buffbreasted songbird, only 12 cm (5 in.) long, with a short pointed bill and stubby tail. Along the West Coast, the wren family’s year-round residents include the winter wren, Bewick’s wren and marsh wren. Although wrens aren’t often seen in large numbers, such groups are known by such magical terms as a ‘flight’ or ‘chime’ of wrens. For their part, rock wrens migrate south in the fall, where they will overwinter at rocky outcrops, rocky cliffs or gravelly bays, to return in springtime to their southern Canadian breeding grounds. Winter wrens dwell, hidden deep among the rotting snags and dense shrubbery of our forests, near trickling streams. While oft-hidden, these yearround residents make their presence known with masterful songs that ripple through the woodlands. To hear the winter wren’s lengthy serenade, head down to the Campbell River for your next nature walk; a free feathered concert is almost certainly guaranteed. NOTE: Correction to Sept. 29, 2011 (Island Wild). The bald-faced Hhspula maculata), common in BC, is native to North America – it’s the true hornets (Vespa species) that are not. Drive Smart BC Parallel Parking Courtesy

2X14 TYEE CHEV

“I can’t parallel park!” laments a reader. Although many of us have trouble with this aspect of driving, he didn’t make this comment in the way you might think. “The other drivers won’t stop to let me back in.” This gentleman went on to explain that as soon as he stopped to try and back into the space the traffic behind him continued to pass by without regard to oncoming traffic or the need for space to allow him to move into the parking space. The lack of courtesy shown by others left him with a dilemma. Do you continue to try and park and possibly hit someone, do you wait blocking traffic until it is safe to move or do you just abandon the attempt? He is correct to be cautious as the Motor Vehicle Act forbids a driver from backing up if the movement cannot be made in safety. However, the other drivers should have some consideration and pause briefly to let this driver park. If there is other traffic approaching, they must do so rather than encroach on the oncoming lane. The presence of a double solid line would require a wait even if the oncoming lane is empty as a driver must always remain to the right of these lines. A little bit of courtesy goes a long way. If you don’t show it to other drivers, how can you expect to have it shown to you? The author is a retired constable with many years of traffic enforcement experience. DEATHS

Joyce Elaine Clayton

September 3, 1925 - October 6, 2011 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joyce, our much loved matriarch. She has left us with her wisdom, her stories and memories, and her unconditional love. Joyce began life as a prairie girl, moving to Port Kells, BC and then to Vancouver Island just prior to WWII. After high school she became a whistle punk working in the woods for two years and then began her life long career and passion of sewing. Her mottos of “One day at a timeâ€? and “If it’s worth doing, it is worth doing rightâ€? gave her the strength to face any challenge with dignity and humour. Joyce was predeceased by her ďŹ rst husband Dean in 1954, her second husband, Leo in 2003, and many loved ones from Lundahl, Clayton, and Johnston families. Joyce and Leo spent their years together in Duncan, Nanaimo and Campbell River. They loved to camp and travelled many a mile across and up and down North America. She is survived by her twin sister, Jean and her youngest brother Jerry and her many in-laws: Phemia, Dwight and Rosaline, Larry, Kathleen, Keith and Barbara and their families. She leaves her children, Wayne, Carol & Bob, Dana & Sue, Grant, Craig and her grandchildren, West & Karly, Ty and Fabiola, Boe & Miranda, Kol & Kathryn, Brooke, Kyle, Jamie, Sylvia, Jay, Kathren, Kristan, and her precious great grandchildren who lit up her life: Jamie, Lillian, Aurora, Abbie, Griffen, Rodi, Kiana, Liam, Kasen, and Gabe. The family would like to thank the staff at Nanaimo Seniors village for their care and compassion. Donations in Joyce’s memory may be made to the Cancer Society, in lieu of owers. An Open House will be held at 7095 Viponds Road, Nanaimo for a celebration of Joyce’s life on Sunday, October 16th at 11 in the morning.

You can’t train for the emotional impact Campbell River Mirror parent company Black Press is a sponsor of this year’s Tour de Rock and we had a staff member participate in the Cops for Cancer fundraiser. The ride is over now but the Nanaimo Bulletin’s Chris Bush reflects back on the event.

CHRIS BUSH BLACK PRESS

Open Houses this Weekend

They say there’s a point at which every Tour De Rock rider gets “it”. I and a few other riders got our first hint of “it” in Port Hardy, on our first day on the road. We were about to leave for Port McNeill when Janelle Canning, one of our tour support team, who also served as event MC and photographer, gathered us into a tight circle, arms around our shoulders. Then she told us to look up and visualize whatever or whomever was meaningful

stances. It was about the time we started swaying to the music and smirking as a way to get through this when I saw the hairdresser and her husband in the background, framed between the riders. He cradled her as she leaned on him weeping.

She’s a breast cancer survivor. I’d watched her earlier as young members of a Junior Canadian Ranger regiment had their heads shaved to raise money against cancer. During breaks when no one was in her chair she’d step out of sight of the crowd and cry, wipe

her eyes, then come back for the next shave. Watching the couple from within the circle of riders reminded me of times in the last few years I’d seen friends and relatives fighting cancer break down, grateful for another Christmas or birthday, another day with their children or a dinner out with friends. Crying with joy for being alive and from the fear of losing the fight. Our awkward feeling little circle and the song provided this moment for this couple and Janelle Canning, who rode with the 2009 team, got “it”. I was extremely fortunate to get on this year’s tour. It was only because of my job that I had a chance to get on at all. Police officers might apply for several years before getting on the team. It started for me as a personal challenge to see if I could surContinued on A28

CARRIER OF THE WEEK NANDINI BULUSU Nandini is in grade 8 e at Southgate Middle School. She likes music and plays the trumpet in band at school. Nandini also enjoys creative art and likes drawing. She plays volleyball and basketball on her school’s teams. er Nandini is saving her Mirror earnings for a band trip to Hawaii next year.

CARRIER OF THE WEEK

Tour de Rock: Sharing their pain Continued from A27 mount the physical demands of the training and tour itself. What the trainers – all former riders – can’t prepare you for is the emotional impact you’re hit with at each stop in every town and the realization of how much the tour means to cancer survivors, their families and those who

lost loved ones to the disease. They come to you and share their stories in simple statements – “I’ve survived cancer twice – colon and breast cancer.” In Lake Cowichan a woman turned to me, “I lost my daughter 17 years ago. She was 14,” and the tears welled up in her eyes. A woman in her 40s

in Oak Bay walked up to me outside a grocery store with tears in her eyes and said, “I’m so grateful to all of you. I lost my auntie.” Sharing their pain is their way of giving you strength and maybe that’s why as a team we felt so strong over the hills and through the long hours in the saddle.

Then there were the construction workers, road crews, hydro linemen, truckers and commuters everywhere, blowing their horns, cheering us on, snapping photos with cellphones and digital cameras. Some stopping our support team to hand them cash. People rushed out of their homes to wave as we passed by. Crowds of children screamed and cheered at every school we visited. Whole towns took us in, sheltered and fed us. As we rode down the Island, we were treated like heroes – a surreal feeling for a group of ordinary people riding bicycles, but the tour is like a travelling event that takes on a life of its own beyond any individual rider or the group. “We’re like a circus,” one rider said to me on the road from Campbell River. Perhaps that’s what a group of perplexed tourists from Delaware thought when they were awakened by our morning warm-up with music and sirens blaring in the motel parking lot in Port McNeil. How would I

THEY SAID IT: “It’s the

most rewarding two weeks they will ever experience.” – Chris Bush, Tour de Rock participant

describe the tour? Practically speaking, it’s an 1,100-kilometre high-output and, at times, physically gruelling bike ride that collects money to fight cancer and send children with cancer to Camp Goodtimes. But anyone fortunate enough to ride with the tour knows it’s impossible to fully describe what it really is or means other than to say it’s the most rewarding two weeks they will likely ever experience. One thing for certain, there’s nothing quite like the Tour de Rock anywhere else. It’s life, energy and response from the public comes from and, I believe, is unique to Vancouver Island. And the tour changes everyone who takes part in it.

Motocross season ends with a bang Beginner class both days. It was huge air and roost throwing action that took place on Saturday and Sunday during the MX2 Intermediate class on the weekend as Ryan Lalonde of Victoria, Jason Abernethy of Port McNeill and Campbell River rider Trevor Devlin were battling it out for first over all. The hang time these riders got, as well as the other riders in the class, was unbelievable. The roost they threw

The KLP Construction Peewee A Tyees proved they are one of the teams to beat while in Port Alberni for the Thanksgiving weekend Tier 2 hockey tournament. The first game of the round-robin had the Tyees face-off against Burnaby Winter Club. Like a heavyweight boxing match, both teams were going toe-to-toe through to the final buzzer with the Tyees winning by a score of 3-2. Nolan Fair received the Player of the game accolades. The Tyees second game was against our

close rivals, Comox Valley, with the Tyees prevailing 2-1. Player of the game honours went to goalie Ethan Ouellette. The third game had the Tyees playing Powell River. The team worked well together and took care of the little details that matter most. By playing as a team, the Tyees skated to a 3-1 win to finish the round-robin with a perfect record and earned a berth in the semi-final game against Port Alberni. For his outstanding goaltending, Nick Ordano received player of the game.

If the first game against Burnaby was a heavyweight boxing match, then the semifinal was its MMA cousin. The game had more than its share of action, some of which drew the attention of the referees. Down 3-2 in the final minutes of the third period the Tyees scored a power play goal to even the score. With less than a minute to go and the goalie out of the net for an extra attacker Tyee defenceman Doug Campbell scored the winning goal with only seconds left on the clock. The Tyees’ 4-3 victory punched their ticket

to the tournament championship game. Campbell earned player of the game. Semiahmoo joined the Tyees in the final. After a scoreless first period, Semiahmoo came out flying in the second and put one in the back of the net and quickly thereafter scored their second goal taking a 2-0 lead into the dressing room at the ice clean midway. After the flood, Semiahmoo scored twice more to go up 4-0. With almost 13 minutes left in the game, Tyees Captain Dawson Frank scored to erase the Semiahmoo shutout.

His teammates drew on that energy and the Tyees were rewarded with a power play. Tyee Tyler Dickson scored shortly after to get back into the game. Down 4-2 with 5:33 left to play, Tyee Lukas Lund wired one home to make it 4-3 with just over a minute remaining. With the goaltender pulled for the extra attacker, the Tyees pressed hard, and rang one off the crossbar. Semiahmoo cleared the puck all the way down the ice into the empty net. Final score 5-3 for Semiahmoo. Captain Dawson Frank was player of the game.

He finished the day in top place on Saturday while Victoria rider Daniel Vanderbasch was second and Peter Swanwick also of Victoria took third place. On Sunday in the Youth class it was Swanwick that took home first place as he finished the day with more over all points than Jason Abernethy who placed second over all. Dean Tipper of Campbell River had a great weekend of racing between grooming the track. Tipper, who has not

raced in a few years, showed no sign of rust as he rode in the Vet Junior class. On Saturday Tipper finished the day in second place behind Saltspring Island rider Matt Kerrigan. Third place over all went to Port McNeill rider Mark Ellis. On Sunday he roared out of the starting gate and rode to first place over all for the day. The Thanksgiving races marked the end of the 2011 motocross season on Vancouver Island. The yearly awards will be handed out in Port Alberni in early November.
