The adventure continues for Restless Josie Josie Boulding, a born and raised riverite, is taking Thursdays by storm with her adventure travel show premieres on CHEK TV. Episode one of Restless Josie, featuring the surf culture of Tofino and Ucluelet, aired on Septs 15 on channel 6. Boulding, who grew up in Campbell River, says the show combines wanderlust with adventure sports, music and interesting interviews. “This has been such a fun journey for me,” says Boulding, the show’s host and director. “I met amazing athletes, visited some of the best events and got to try everything from wakeboarding to chuckwagon racing. I interviewed celebrities like Kevin Costner and Adrien Grenier. Walked the red carpet in New York. And the footage and interviews we captured…I can’t wait to see it all on TV.” Born and raised in Campbell River, Boulding set out to create the show after being struck with a
need to travel. While watching professional surfers dare huge waves in Hawaii, she became fascinated by the passion of athletes who risk their lives pursuing their sport. The television show will combine interviews with athletes, action footage and scenery with Boulding guiding viewers through it all. “I’m attracted to successful people who work hard,” Boulding says. “There are so many world class athletes who are overlooked because their sport is not well known, especially in Canada. I want to tell their stories.” That’s just what she does in Restless Josie, season one. The first episode featured Tofino’s Rip Curl Stew, a major Canadian surf contest. Between classic west coast footage, a surf lesson and beautiful hotels, Boulding interviewed the top surfers in Canada, including Noah Cohen and Peter Devries. Other episodes include the little known rodeo stars of the Calgary Stampede, the sand and sexiness
of Kelowna’s Centre of Gravity Games, Whistler’s knobby tired insanity of Crankworx, New York City’s first professional surfing event, rock climbing with Canada’s top climber in Squamish, and the music scene and twowheeled acrobatics in Boulding’s home town of the Comox Valley. To add flow and beat, the show’s soundtrack will tap stellar, lesser known music. “I’m a huge music fan,” she says. “I love finding new music. This is a great opportunity to expose independent bands and talented musicians.” Restless Josie airs on Thursday’s at 8:30 p.m. throughout the fall starting September 15. To find out more about the show visit www. restlessjosie.com and www.cheknews.ca “The show’s success will come from the extremely talented athletes, beautiful scenery, excellent music and a great team
Josie Boulding is off to another adventure each week on her adventure travel show Restless Josie which airs Thursdays on CHEK TV. to put it all together, including the people at CHEK,” Boulding says. “I’m grateful for CHEK’s support.” About Restless Josie: Launched as an Internet travel show, Restless Josie remains true to its roots as an independent and eclectic show focused
on adventure sports and exotic locales. Hosted and directed by Josie Boulding, a Campbell River born and raised, photographer and videographer, the show’s emphasis is dramatic action in spectacular locations with a great sound track backing it up.

Pregnancy Care Centre marks 20 years Lindsay Chung Black Press COURTENAY — The Comox Valley Pregnancy Care Centre has been helping people in this region for 20 years, and for one night in November, it will celebrate its past, present and future. The Comox Valley Pregnancy Care Centre is holding a 20th anniversary banquet Nov. 19 at the Native Sons Hall. With the theme of Celebrating Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, the banquet will feature a roast beef
dinner, entertainment by pianist and musical humourist Matt Day and a special guest speaker, Lisa Wengel of Nanaimo. “Mainly, it’s going to be about celebrating 20 years of being in the Valley,” said executive director Julie Le Goff. “I want it to be a really fun evening of celebrating.” During a career that has spanned nearly 20 years, Day — who has played for Queen Elizabeth — has travelled across Canada performing a blend of jazz, pop and musical comedy. He is a versatile pianist who

Pianist and musical humourist Matt Day will supply the entertainment Nov. 19 as the Comox Valley Pregnancy Centre celebrates its 20th anniversary with a banquet at the Native Sons Hall in Courtenay. Photo submitted past clients. “One woman said, ‘My daughter’s pregnant, and I came here when I was pregnant with her and you treated me so well that I wanted her to come here,’” she said. About 160 people visit the Comox Valley Pregnancy Centre each year. “I think it’s exciting we’ve been here 20 years,” said Le Goff. “Many of our clients have been referred to us by someone who’s used our services in the past, which is good because it means we’ve built up a good reputation in the
Valley.” As well, a lot of people who have been helped in the past have gone on to support the centre, noted Le Goff. As she looks toward the future, Le Goff is excited because the Comox Valley Pregnancy Care Centre is hiring a young woman who will teach sexual integrity in schools. “I’ve been wanting that for years,” she said. “Part of our mandate as a nonprofit is education. So much of the time, I always find we’re dealing with people when they are in a

4x5 GARF BAX P/U AD Nathan is seen here with salesman Marc Gagnon picking up his replacement Ford Fiesta. Nathan says he will always drive a Ford from now on after he fell asleep at the wheel on the new Island Highway with the cruise set on. He was told by crash scene investigators that he is lucky to be alive. They also said that if he had been in another vehicle, there’s a good chance he wouldn’t be here today.
More than 55 percent of Fiesta’s body structure is made from ultra high-strength steel and light weight boron steel which helps protect critical occupant safety zones. It also has 7 airbags which certainly helped Nathan when he launched his Fiesta off the highway causing the rims to snap on impact, then rolling the car multiple times! He came out with only a scratched arm! Nathan says he will never drive again if he even feels remotely tired.

Bears are hungry, so public urged to do their part With bears seeking out extra food to build up fat reserves for hibernation, B.C.’s Conservation Officer Service is busy responding to conflicts between humans and bears. The main cause of conflicts in B.C. is access to non-natural food sources. Bears that learn how to get at exposed pet food, ripe fruit, improperly stored garbage, dirty barbecues or composts become conditioned and will continue to return to the food source. “We can’t prevent all bear-human conflicts but we can prevent those ones,” said Environment Minister Terry Lake. “There’s a lot of information out there for the public such as the Bear Aware website, which offers valuable information to help us all reduce bear-human conflicts.” The Bear Smart Community program is a voluntary, preventative bear conservation program designed by the Ministry of

with Don Daniels October is my favourite month of the year to ¿sh the rivers and lakes in Campbell River. The Coho are entering the river mouths of the Campbell River, and Oyster River. Cutthroat trout follow the salmon into the rivers and are fun to catch on a Ày. The lakes are active for trout. Echo Lake is a very popular spot for the locals to ¿sh and OYSTER RIVER TROUT last week the stocked trout were TAKING PURPLE STREAMER released into the lake. Trout were hitting Coachman streamer Àies, bead head Àies and small Muddler minnows. Here you can ¿sh from shore, and the local’s ¿sh from kayaks, canoes and Àoat tubes. Another lake to try this time of year is Brewster. A black gnat Ày will work if ¿sh are visible on the surface as witnessed after a recent rainstorm. Many anglers this time of year will head out into the saltwater in hopes of catching a hatchery clipped Coho. Rotary Park, Salmon point and Miracle beach are good spots to watch the ¿shermen or try your luck. On Discovery pier the ¿shing will continue well into November, I met up with Don Fries from Campbell River who started ¿shing on the pier 3 years ago. This year Don landed a 24-pound spring. The ¿sh was brought up on the pier and the hook came out at the last moment. Many locals ¿sh the pier for the love of it and not the ¿sh. This year the largest ¿sh caught off the pier was a 35-pound spring caught by Merv Monk on July 27th.

SD71 keeps StrongStart moving Lindsay Chung Black Press COURTENAY — School District 71 is one of only 10 districts in the province to have a mobile StrongStart program this year. This means that, for the first time, some of the less-central schools in the Comox Valley will offer StrongStart, a free drop-in program for children from birth up to age five and their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles and any other adult caregivers. The Comox Valley was one of 10 districts in the province awarded this outreach program to address outlying areas, explained Allan Douglas, School District 71’s director of elementary education. Facilitator Phylis Edgar, who has an early childhood and social work diploma, offers mobile StrongStart once a week at Denman Island Elmentary, Hornby Island Elementary, Miracle Beach Elementary, Aspen Park Elementary and Royston Elementary schools. The first StrongStart session was a hit for Daniel Williams, 3, as the morning started with play time with his dad, Ted, and facilitator Phylis Edgar at Royston Elementary School. Photo by Lindsay Chung are open during the school year, and families are welcome to attend on an ongoing basis or a drop-in schedule. StrongStart centres are not designated as child care programs, and families and caregivers must be in attendance with their children. “The idea is the parent and child are here together,” said Douglas. “It’s a way for parents to network with everyone. It’s a way for us to build great relationships with the school. It’s a lovely way to help
parents with some skills before they come to school. “If this is the school they end up going to, they’re comfortable with it.” StrongStart is a drop-in program, and people can come in whatever time they want to and stay as long or as little as they want. Children, families and caregivers attending StrongStart centres can participate in organized sessions with story time, music and singing; take part in play-based activities; access crafts and
puzzles; enjoy a healthy snack; learn about effective early learning and child guidance practices; play in the gym and meet and make connections with other families attending the centre. Edgar likes to give children a chance to play and be creative in her program. “I like to offer all the options for the creativity of the child so they can mostly learn through play, and I believe in learning through play,” she said. At recess, StrongStart has full use of the gym, and the
caregivers and children can play games. “The schools are very accommodating,” said Douglas. “Each of the five schools have given us space like this. We call it ‘Travelling StrongStart,’ and it’s working really well.” Ted Williams of Royston brought his three-and-a-half-yearold son Daniel to StrongStart for the first time last Friday. Daniel’s sister is in Grade 1 at Royston Elementary School, and Williams went to the school as a child. Williams brought Daniel to StrongStart
to give him a better start. Daniel has had seizures since he was 11 months old, and he had brain surgery last March, and Williams says they think he might be a little developmentally delayed. “We figure the more we expose him to, the more he’ll catch up,” he said. “We heard about this and thought we’d give it a try. Plus, he’ll be going to this school in a couple years.” Williams said the initial response to StrongStart was really
good. “We had a warm welcome from Phylis and the others,” he said. “Daniel doesn’t seem to be as shy as usual.” For more information, contact Edgar at phylis.edgar@ sd71.bc.ca. School District 71 also offers StrongStart programs every day at Brooklyn, Cumberland, Courtenay and Queneesh elementary schools. writer@ comoxvalleyrecord.com

Who to believe when it comes to supplement usage Well the press is at it again, with scare tactics regarding a recent research paper that appeared in Archives of Internal Medicine Oct 10th 2011. The exact title of the study is “Dietary Supplements and Mortality Rate in Older Women” but the headlines read: “Health risk warning on vitamins”, “Study Warns of Harm Caused by Multivitamins on Older Women” and “Multivitamin-taking women have higher risk of earlier death: Study”. In preparation for some of the questions that I am bound to receive here are some of the facts behind this study. Fact One: This statement written
by the authors was of this flawed study not reported: “In on the Alliance conclusion in this for Natural Health large prospective website. In this analysis cohort of older (ed: he explains how the white, average age data was massaged to 62) women, we found ignore the fact that that most dietary the study actually supplements were found that vitamin unrelated to and mineral total mortality usage was rate.” associated Fact Two: with The highest risk healthier supplement was lifestyles and iron. It is well the authors known that iron failed to can act as a pro- Dr. Ingrid indicate the oxidant in those Pincott outcome who don’t need Naturally Healthy of the it and people combined taking iron should be effect of this and monitored by a health supplement usage. care professional Fact Four: The expert in nutrition data was obtained especially for men and from three separate women as they age. self reporting Fact Three: Dr. questionnaires over a Robert Verkerk Ph.D 22 year period: 1986, provides an expert 1997 and 2004. There analysis of the data was no supporting
data on the nutrient status of the subjects nor dosages or forms of what supplements they were taking. This is not good science. Fact Five: From the analysis of the adjusted data only two ingredients were worth a closer look: calcium and iron. In this study calcium supplementation showed to be beneficial when in fact recent studies have indicated when calcium is taken alone in the absence of Vitamin D, it showed an increase risk of heart attack. This is a warning flag about the feasibility of this research paper. Adverse effects of high iron are well known especially in older men
and women. Fact Six: There have been other studies in the last few years about the socalled increased risk to health from vitamin E, folic acid and betacarotene. However what was found is that when the natural source of these nutrients were administered ie mixed tocopherols and tocotrienols vitamin E, 5-methyltetra hydrofolate form of folic acid and mixed natural carotenoids, the reverse was true. Fact Seven: Prescription drugs cause more deaths than traffic accidents according to a 2009 study reported in the LA Times on Sept 17th 2011, killing at least 37,485 people yearly.
There have been no deaths directly linked to the use of vitamin supplements. Prescription drugs are also the fourth leading cause of in hospital deaths in North America. Health care providers, such as naturopathic physicians, who are expert in nutritional medicine, will educate you in the importance of the form and dosage of nutritional supplements as it is increasingly difficult to get enough nutrients in our food supply from our depleted soils. They can also perform blood tests to verify dosages of some nutrients such as iron (serum ferritin) and vitamin D 25(OH). Don’t let this study influence your decision to supplement.
This is not a good example of excellent science and there are copious amounts of research and decades of clinical experience that suggest the opposite; that supplement usage may improve the quality of and prolong life. Dr. Ingrid Pincott, Naturopathic Physician, has been practicing since 1985 and can be reached at 250-286-3655 or www.DrPincott.com

Plan helps families with long-distance caregiving Caring for a person with dementia from a long distance presents many challenges for Campbell River residents. “It is important to develop a plan of action,” says Jane Hope, the Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s regional support and education coordinator. Caregivers should take some basic steps before visiting the person with dementia, she says, to create a plan that best meets their loved one’s needs. “Talk to family members, friends, neighbours, their physician, health agencies and other people who are in contact with the person,” says Hope. handout, Assessing the Needs of the Person with Dementia, is an easy guide and is available online at www.alzheimerbc.org Caregivers should identify local services needed and make appointments with service providers. “Communicate clearly what you are hoping to achieve. Tire grants help out Children at the Gathering Place playground now have a clean and safe place to play. Cheryl Jordan, Success By 6 Coordinator said; “Thanks to BC Tire Stewardship grant, MCFD, M’Akola Housing and supportive community members - the children who attend programs at the Gathering Place now have a wonderful playground. The funds from the grants allowed us to resurface the ground underneath the structure. The resurfaced playground material is made from recycled tire products. The
rubber tiles are pliable, bouncy and safe. Previously the playground had a gravel surface. Debris and objects would sink beneath the gravel and were the cause of concerns around health and safety. Anne Boyd, Chair of Community Council of Partners, Success by 6 applauded the new playground; “Children need safe, clean places to play and through the generosity of several funders this is now a reality at the Gathering Place. The Gathering Place is a centre for children and families who live in the 300 Robron Road
