A string of robberies may be linked: RCMP RENÉE ANDOR CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

ALISTAIR TAYLOR/THE MIRROR

Face time Sunny skies and a good turnout grace the first Pumpkin Fest at Spirit Square on Saturday. The pumpkin carving contest was popular with the kids as Kirby Jarvis tried her hand at it with her creation “Mr. Goofy.”

Four recent robberies are likely connected, according to RCMP Sgt. Craig Massey. A man attempted a robbery from the Service BC office on Ironwood Street at 4:05 p.m. on Tues. Oct. 11 while on Friday a lone male robbed the Scotia Bank on Alder Street at 2:43 p.m., and Discovery Chiropractic on Fir Street at 3:50 p.m. Then, witnesses reported that a lone male robbed the Peoples Drug Mart in Willow Point at 4:38 p.m. on Saturday. In all four robberies the man was described as Caucasian, between six foot and six foot four inches tall, and lanky to medium build. Massey said he suspects it is the same man. “I firmly believe this is the same individual, given the upstart of this specific crime trend and now the frequency of it,” said Massey. “These offences... based on (modus operandi) and physical description, in all likelihood, are the same offender.” During the Service BC robbery last week the suspect entered the premises, jumped over the counter, and was attempting to grab cash when more employees came out. He fled out the door and left in a red Mazda pick-up truck.

Shortly after, police found a stolen red Mazda pick-up truck at the end of 8th Avenue. It had been stolen in Nanaimo the day before. His face was covered during the robbery and he was wearing gloves. In the Scotia Bank robbery the suspect was wearing grey coveralls and a dark hat. When he entered the bank, he ordered everyone to the ground. There was no response and he jumped over a teller wicket, took an undisclosed amount of money, and fled the bank. However, a dye pack in the stolen money detonated and he dropped it outside. The suspect then jumped into a black 1990 Dodge truck and fled from the rear lot of the bank. He rear ended a 2006 Honda Element that was travelling north on Alder Street, removing the passenger side rear quarter panel from the Honda. The culprit abandoned the truck at the corner of 9th Avenue and Thulin Street, running east over the embankment towards KFC. About an hour later, a man entered Discovery Chiropractic on Fir Street with his face covered. He approached the staff and demanded money, receiving an undisclosed amount which he stuffed in his pocket. Witnesses say he was wearing Continued on A2

the crimes are “desperation at work,” and believes the robberies could have some sort of “addiction component.” During Saturday’s Peoples Drug Mart robbery a man walked up to a clerk and demanded money. The suspect took an undisclosed sum from the tills and walked out of the store. After exiting, he walked casually away from the premises, cutting across the parking lot and disappearing south on Highway 19A. Police believe he walked through residential yards. Witnesses said he was dressed in a beige jacket, beige pants, dark foot wear, white gloves, and a wide brimmed fishing hat, according to Massey. Follow up interviews revealed that about five minutes after the robbery a man was seen exiting a 1993 blue Dodge pick-up at the corner of Eardley and James Roads. Police discovered the clothing used in the drug store robbery left in the truck. The male exiting the vehicle is described as a tall slender Caucasian male approximately six foot one inch tall, and wearing an olive or khaki green long sleeve cotton shirt, with no buttons or collar. His hair is described as short and dark, with possible salt and pepper colouring. And it’s described as a grown out buzz cut. He had stubble on his face and was wearing basic black rimmed glasses. While Massey said no weapons have been used yet, he is concerned that could change. “That can change in any given offence and we’re concerned that degree of violence will escalate,” said Massey. Both Dodge trucks stolen from the Spit Road area have been recovered, said Massey. RCMP are looking for video footage of the blue dodge truck used in the People’s robbery Saturday afternoon.

Pumpkin Fest

Some of the candidates for city council stepped up to the plate during the pumpkin seed spitting contest at Pumpkin Fest in Spirit Square Saturday. For being good sports, they get the privilege of having their game faces in the paper. Mary Storry, (inset from top) showed fine form in the pumpkin seed spitting contest. Roy Grant will be offered this picture to use in his campaign posters. Sean Smith was recently dubbed the Twitter King but as someone quipped Saturday, he became the Spitter King as his shot won the competition. Mirror celebrates a milestone Life begins at 40, someone once quipped. If that’s true then the Campbell River Mirror is a newborn. That’s because tomorrow, the Mirror turns 40.

But with the way the newspaper industry changes these days, you can’t help but feel you’re just a babe in the woods in this day of new media, social media and media

saturation. But be that as it may, Oct. 20 1971, was the Mirror’s birthday and we’re celebrating our 40th. Luckily, the Mirror is an active 40-year-

old who is on top of the changes that have re-shaped the media landscape. At 40-yearsold, the Campbell River Mirror is no longer just a stack of folded newsprint. TELUS AUTHORIZED DEALERS

We’re also on the Internet, Facebook and Twitter and we’re a video broadcaster. The catch phrase these days is multiplatform and we’re on so many platforms we sometimes need those platform shoes that were popular in the 70s. On Oct. 20, 1971, newspapers were king. That upstart television was making inroads but the paid circulation paper was everybody’s main source of news both locally and nationally. Back then a group of local businessmen pooled their resources to create the Campbell River Mirror after a concentration of ownership in the community’s other newspaper left them with no competition – never a good thing in a free market. “All we wanted was competition, nothing more,” said Mac McDougall one of the founding businessmen. And that’s what they provided. Once up and running, the Mirror was soon handed off to Ron Bock, its first publisher who bought the burgeoning newspaper. In the late 1980s, journalist and newspaper entrepreneur Gerry Soroka bought the paper and took it to even greater heights. In the 1990s, David Black brought the Mirror into the province’s biggest family of B.C.-owned newspapers and it has never looked back. Today, local news is still provided by your local newspaper. Your community newspaper is still the only media outlet that focuses on your community. At the heart of it all is a team of dedicated individuals. Campbell River Mirror staffers, a mix of longserving individuals and eager newcomers, put their heart and soul into the job of serving this community. And we couldn’t be happier doing it. So, although we’re in our 40s now, we have no intention of slowing down. Thanks to all our readers and advertisers for supporting us over 40 decades and here’s to 40 more!

Mayor’s letter of support upsets local taxi company RENÉE ANDOR

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

287 Taxi is unhappy about a letter signed by the mayor to support a Comox business’ expansion to Campbell River. The letter suppor ts Ambassador S h u t t l e S e r v i c e ’s expansion to Campbell River. Although signed in May, 287 Taxi office manager, Deborah Helme, said they just found out about it recently, as well as the fact the application was approved by the Passenger Transportation Board. She, along with her husband, Dave Helme, owner of 287 Taxi, and Comox Taxi operations manager Dave Smith, met with mayor Charlie Cornfield on Monday morning to urge Cornfield to change his mind. “We don’t need anybody else in this town shuttling people back and forth. We do a fine job as it is,” Deborah told Cornfield. “We want a letter to overturn your support for

him.” The letter supports Ambassador Shuttle’s expansion “including pick-up and drop-off service at the Campbell River airport.” Although the letter states pick-up and drop-off service at the airport, Cornfield said his understanding of what the company would be doing was different. “Their application as I talked to him doesn’t include our airport; it’s bringing people from their airport to our city,” Cornfield told the taxi companies. “What was explained to us was this was to allow him to bring people from the Valley that flew into Comox up to here, and right now we don’t have West Jet landing here and that brings in an awful lot of passengers.” Cor nfield said he hadn’t seen the application outlining all of the clauses before he signed the letter of support, and he had made his decision based on what the Ambassador Shuttle Service’s

owner Kevin East had told him over the phone and in e-mails. But the company’s application sent to the Passenger Transportation Board is different from what the letter of support states. There is a “return clause” which states that the same passengers getting dropped off are allowed to be picked up again by the company – if they arrange the return ride during the original ride. There is no mention of Ambassador Shuttle service coming to

Campbell River airport in the application. Also, the return clause was tightened up from the original “reverse trips” term in the company’s licence, which stated it could pick-up and drop-off in the destination area. East said his company’s expansion “will have no impact on 287 Taxi at all,” but Deborah said the return clause is still too loose. Cor nfield said he would read over the application thoroughly and would make a decision this week. He did

say he would not be pleased if it turned out he was misinformed about what he was supporting. “If somebody tries to distort the situation then I’m not going to be very happy about that,” said Cornfield. Although the application has already been approved Deborah said if Cornfield decides to overturn his letter of support it may help in her efforts to get the application decision overturned by the Passenger Transportation Board.

YOU CAN HELP! In your neighbourhoods this rainy season, please help by cleaning the leaves from catch basin grates close to your home. Heavy seasonal rains bring the threat of Ňooding. As trees shed leaves, some catch basins become blocked. When water cannot enter, Ňooding results. With approximately 3,300 catch basins in Campbell River, some will be plugged by leaves and other debris during each heavy rainfall. Many of the City’s catch basins are connected to drainage systems that discharge to environmentally sensiƟve Įsh bearing streams. Keep oil, paint, and other contaminants away from catch basins to prevent polluƟon and Įsh kills. Damaged catch basins can be reported to the City of Campbell River, Dogwood OperaƟons at 250-2864033. Aquaculturist enters council race Campbell River’s Dave Minato has been known around town for many different things: as owner of the local pet store, tour guide to area salmon farms, father of four busy daughters. He’s ready for a new hat though – and would like it to be as Campbell River City Councillor. “It’s a great way to be involved in the community – to help guide this city through the ongoing transitions it’s facing,” said Minato. “I can help bring together voices from many different parts of Campbell River – and am committed to proactive and productive action.” Minato moved to Campbell River 24 years ago. For 16 years, he owned and operated the Campbell River Pet Centre until spring of 2010 when he sold the business and went back to his professional roots – aquaculture. He is now the Member and Community Relations Co-ordinator for the BC Salmon Farmers Association, returning to the industry after leaving 20 years ago. He and wife Val have four daughters in the local school district.

Banner auction Come on down to the Tidemark Art Gallery (in the Tidemark Theatre Lobby) between October 19 and November 8, to put your bid on a banner from this year’s lovely works of art. The subject for the 2011 Banner Project, which graces the streets of Campbell River, was the 100th Anniversary of Strathcona Park, a celebration of one of Canada’s finest parks. For those who have hiked and played within its amazing geography, Strathcona Park is a true gem of Vancouver Island. Now is your chance to celebrate these memories with a beautiful banner! The banners will be sold through Silent Auction. The closing time for bids is noon on November 8. The Banner Auction is a fundraiser for the Arts Council. Campbell River hospital will receive a mobile MRI machine, the Vancouver Island H e a l t h Au t h o r i t y (VIHA) announced Tuesday morning. The portable Mobile Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine will rotate between hospitals in Campbell River, the Comox Valley, Port Alberni and Duncan so patients will no longer have to travel to

Nanaimo or Victoria for scans. “This is great news for patients and families living on the North Island, West Coast and Cowichan Valley,” said Don McRae, Liberal MLA for the Comox Valley. “Being closer to home means less travel time which helps reduce stress and that’s a big part of the equation when it comes to your health.” The new machine is expected to be fully

It will operate 50 weeks per year with two weeks designated for service and maintenance. The news comes two months after VIHA announced it was backing out of mobile MRI services. North Island NDP MLA Claire Trevena is thrilled VIHA reversed its decision.

“I’m really pleased they did change their mind and decided to give us an MRI,” Trevena said. “A number of people, myself included and my colleague Cowichan MLA Bill Routley, wrote to VIHA urging them to re-consider mobile MRI services. “It’s long over due for many patients on the North Island.” In April VIHA sent out a request for proposals to deliver the mobile unit only to

turn them all down weeks later, citing cost factors. But just days after announcing it would no longer pursue mobile MRI services, Catherine Mackay, VIHA’s chief operating official, asked VIHA staff to review its decision. On Tuesday, VIHA revealed it had over turned that verdict. “I have advocated for mobile MRI for many years, so I’m very pleased they’ve decided to do this,” Trevena said. It’s expected the new machines will perform more than 3,800 MRI scans, amounting to 16.5 per cent of the total 23,000 MRI’s provided annually by VIHA. The volumes and schedule in each community will be determined based on population size and historical MRI use. “The importance of MRI in diagnosing and supporting the treatment of disease has grown rapidly in recent years as the technology has improved,” said Dr. John Mathieson, Medical Director of Medical Imaging for VIHA, in a news release. “A mobile MRI service is a significant addition to VIHA’s medical imaging services and will support better patient care and outcome as well as ensuring our radiologists throughout Vancouver Island have the opportunity to conduct reads on this increasingly important technology.” Re g i o n a l H o s p i tal Districts have expressed interest in bringing these services to their communities. Over the coming weeks, VIHA will be discussing funding arrangements with them.

PUBLISHER: Zena Williams publisher@campbellrivermirror.com

EDITOR: Alistair Taylor editor@campbellrivermirror.com

Our View

Flush with embarrassment over toilets So, are the newly-installed toilets – some say outhouses – outside the Campbell River Art Gallery a badly-need downtown convenience or an eyesore? We say: Welcome How about both? The need for public toilets in to our new downtown Campbell River has been tabloid format a need for a long time, not just for visitors and the shopping public but Mirror also to relieve civic facilities like the art gallery itself and the public library from the hassle of providing services to less-than considered

users. The gallery had to close its washroom facilities because their abuse was so bad and the library across the street is frequently disrupted by abusive behaviour in a facility that serves as a hangout for people with seemingly nowhere else to go – both literally and figuratively. So, the need for public toilets in the downtown core is irrefutable. The city’s provision of those facilities is desperately needed. However, once again, we’re left wishing that the city could finesse these things better. These toilets stick out like the proverbial sore thumb. Could

nobody have foreseen that? We have a showcase public building – an art gallery, ironically – in the centre of the city and we stick what has been incorrectly but understandably mistaken for outhouses. City staff say they had to go where they are because of access sewer piping but it’s hard to believe that a few more meters of extension could not have provided to tuck these things into a less obtrusive spot. There is also a plan to decorate the toilets in the future which is good and it could turn out to be a fun feature like the downtown piano and its painting

Good point: Headline What is Economic Development? Rivercorp, the Campbell River Economic Development Corporation, is responsible for overseeing economic development for the City of Campbell River. Rivercorp works to help grow Campbell River by attracting new businesses, retaining and expanding existing businesses, building Campbell River’s tax base and sustaining a reasonable quality of life for its residents. Unfortunately, there is no universal template for economic development. Different communities or regions have different strengths, weaknesses and challenges, which means that policies or strategies that have achieved success in one community may not work in another. In short, there is no magic bullet for economic development. More than 15,000 communities in North America are actively seeking to attract new businesses to their respective areas, while the number of businesses that are prepared to move or expand in a given year tends to be in the hundreds, a significantly smaller number. Factor in troubled economic times and the low tolerance for risk of business owners and executives related to relocating or expanding a business and this number shrinks even more. Therefore, competition between communities to attract businesses is fierce. It is not enough to say, “Move to Campbell River, it’s great!” For each business attraction opportunity Rivercorp must develop a specifically tailored business attraction strategy, a time and resource intensive endeavour. Sign treaties, or ‘shut ‘er down’ say First Nations

Tom Fletcher B.C. Views

Finally, somebody in the B.C. treaty negotiation system has come out and said it. Releasing the B.C. Treaty Commission’s 19th annual report last week, Chief Commissioner Sophie Pierre announced she has asked for a one-year extension to her term, to see the organization through its second decade. And if things don’t change, particularly in Ottawa, then “shut ’er down.” The commission facilitates talks and

doles out funds to aboriginal groups researching and negotiating treaties. As of this year, they have disbursed $500 million. “We are 19 years into the process, and we have, just on the First Nations side, a half a billion dollar investment, and when are we going to start seeing a return on that investment?” Pierre asked. It’s safe to assume that there has been at least that much spent by the federal and

provincial governments as well. And after a burst of progress with the Tsawwassen and Maa-Nulth treaties, and a controversial deal with the Yale First Nation in the Fraser Canyon, costly inaction resumed. Sliammon First Nation negotiators finalized a treaty in 2009. Off it went to Ottawa, where it has languished ever since, waiting for a set of initials that would allow a ratification vote by about 1,000

Sliammon people near Powell River. At stake is a settlement in which B.C. contributes 8,300 hectares of Crown land and Ottawa provides $37 million to compensate for a century of trespass and resource extraction from Sliammon territory. Other commissioners agreed with Pierre about Ottawa’s role, including the federal appointee, Jerry Lampert. Federal Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq was in B.C. last week to sign an

agreement to hand over authority and funding for on-reserve health programs to a new aboriginal authority that will work with the provincial health system directly to administer reserve health programs. A similar agreement was signed in 2006 for aboriginal schooling. B.C. Health Minister Mike de Jong and Aboriginal Relations Minister Mary Polak agree that these broader self-government

transfers for health and education, along with forest and mining deals, will bring treaties closer. Pierre’s blunt warning must have been heard in Ottawa. It appears the Sliammon treaty has been located and will receive federal blessing this week. OPINION

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2011 | CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR |

Rivercorp: Development is a marathon Continued from A12

Accordingly, Rivercorp must be prudent when determining which attraction opportunities have sufficient promise to warrant pursuing because it is impossible to pursue them all. Over the last year Rivercorp has been focused on putting into place the tools necessary to focus on the unique aspects of Campbell River and on developing tools to increase transparency and accountability. Rivercorp has implemented a strong online presence that utilizes Facebook, Twitter and more traditional methods like newsletters and press releases. New processes have been established to ensure accountability to the mayor and council including quarterly operations reports that are posted on the Rivercorp website. A great deal of effort has been focused on

of the North Island to encourage mineral exploration. Rivercorp will also remain committed to working with City staff to implement the City’s Strategic Plan to send a loud and clear signal that Campbell River is open for business. Another of Rivercorp’s key economic development roles is business retention and expansion. This involves working with existing businesses in Campbell River to identify and address their needs and help them grow and expand. Rivercorp is now working diligently and collaboratively with the business community, Campbell River Chamber of Commerce, North Island Employment Foundations Society, Tourism Advisory Committee, Future of Forestry Task Force, InFilm and Campbell River Creative Industry Council, among others, to iden-

tify business opportunities and turn them into tangible returns for the business community and residents of Campbell River. Notable steps have already been taken to assess new markets and develop strategies to attract and retain an appropriately skilled workforce, address training needs, access financing and investment information, and liaise with all levels of government, all of which will help Campbell River’s business community stay in business and remain competitive. It is also important to note that economic development work can be confidential. It is common for Rivercorp to facilitate a meeting between businesses to discuss potential synergies and then be asked to keep confidential the fact that the meeting occurred. Occasionally, these meetings result in

new business ventures being launched, although this type of success can often take months or even years to reach fruition, during which time confidentially must be maintained. Economic development is a marathon, not a sprint. It is complex and multi-dimensional work that includes, among other things, leading major development projects, researching business opportunities, facilitating business meetings, securing investment and access to capital, intensive networking, marketing, and public and media relations. Campbell River has a multitude of amenities to attract new businesses, investments and people to our community and Rivercorp is working hard to make this happen. Ben Chalmers Board Chairman

2X6 The Bra Lady

Is Coming to Size You Up

Are you tired of feeling saggy, lumpy, pinched or strained? Well you’re not alone. As you’ve probably seen on Oprah or read in women’s magazines, over 80 per cent of all women wear the wrong size bra.

THE BRA LADY

Here’s where Barb Chapman, the Bra Lady, comes in.

Chapman is coming to CAMPBELL RIVER ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 27 to outfit you with the

best possible bra for your body. Chapman said she will be seeing clients on a one-on-one basis, explaining the benefits of good bras and measuring their bodies properly. “Most women just want to find a good-fitting bra that’s not uncomfortable,” Chapman said. “What they don’t realize is that a good support bra is also important for blood circulation and enhanced lymph drainage.” Chapman has over 200 bra sizes available for ordering, ranging from 30AA to 52KK. It’s likely that you’ll fit somewhere between those sizes. She offers these questions for women to ask themselves: • Do you have a drawer full of bras but none that fit comfortably? • Does your bust line “bounce” when you walk while wearing your “everyday” bra? • Do you overflow the cup of your bra? • Do your bra straps slip off your shoulders or dig into your shoulders leaving red and painful marks? • Does your bra ride up in the back because you tighten the straps to give you added support? • Have you ever begun an exercise class only to drop out because your breasts ached from lack of support while jumping or running? If you answer yes to any of these you are in need of a new bra, and a custom one could be the way to go.

YOU’VE TRIED ALL THE REST - NOW TRY THE BEST • NO UNDERWIRES • NO ELASTIC STRAPS • NO STRAPS FALLING OFF SHOULDERS • NO RIDING UP IN THE BACK

You can sign up for Chapman’s bra clinic by calling

Ready, set, go to the nordic ski gear swap The Strathcona Nordics (Vancouver Island’s cross-country ski club) are holding their annual crosscountry ski gear swap and AGM. In addition to finding some great used equipment, you can also learn about waxing, get your skis ready for the snow, have a delicious chili lunch, buy some baking, and find out the latest nordic news. People can drop off cross-country ski gear (which is in good condition) to sell at the swap from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Between 11 and 11:30, participants can attend a free waxing clinic with Coach Dave. A chili lunch will be available for a small fee from 11:30 a.m. to noon. From 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., everyone is welcome to attend the Strathcona Nordic Ski Club’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Note: People attending the AGM will get in first to the swap! Doors will open for the gear swap at 1 p.m. and stay open until 3 p.m. People must pick up their unsold gear by 4 p.m. Starting at 10 a.m., the Junior Racing team will be waxing skis as a fundraiser, so be sure to bring your skis by the Comox Rec Centre and let the JR team get your skis ready for the first snowfall. While you wait, you can buy some baking from the Devo team, who are raising funds for their exchange with a ski team from Quebec. For more information visit their website StrathconaNordics. com The swap takes place on Sat., Oct. 29, at the Comox Rec Centre on Noel Avenue in Comox.

Enrich Someone’s Life Enrich the life of an adult learner, become a tutor. The experience will change your life! Unfortunately, one in four British Columbians cannot read this sentence. More than half of working age people in BC have difficulty reading, which makes it difficult for them to be a part of our changing economy. Be a part of the solution! The CR Literacy Association has students who need tutors. Volunteer tutors work one-on-one with adults and youth wanting to improve their English skills. Everyone is welcome! More tutors are needed for these programs. Adult literacy tutors work with adults whose skills range from learning sound-letter relationships for the first time to reading at a junior high level. The Computer Literacy program for Seniors uses peer tutors who focus on very basic computer skills. ESL tutors work with youth and adults who are learning English as their second language, (reading, writing, and pronunciation). All the above programs are free of charge, thanks to funding from the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia. Training for volunteer tutors will be held at the end of the month. If you are interested in becoming a tutor for either program phone 250 923 1275 or email Julina Bastock at info@ literacyforall.ca for more information.

The Lions Club wants the community to help get the Willow Point Hall on the city’s Heritage Register. The club, which owns and operates the hall, has been working with the city since May to get its home base on the register in order to protect it and secure funding to fix it up. As part of the process, city staff need to see a Statement of Significance, explaining why the property has heritage value or character. The Lions are hosting a community open house this Sunday from 1-4 p.m,

at the Willow Point Hall (2165 S. Island Highway) to gather stories from the community as well as any photos, letters or even wedding certificates. “We’ve done a ton of research on it,” said Tom McKenzie, who is leading the heritage status campaign. “I have papers that go back to 1939 such as minutes and financial records from the Willow Point Community Club’s regular meetings.” The open house will feature a video of Willow Point in the old days as well as a slideshow. Those attending the open house will break off into small groups to share and write down their stories revolving around the hall. “There were dances, weddings, roller skating – all organized at the hall,” McKenzie said. “It was a busy, busy hall with dances every weekend.” Michele Sirett, the city’s recreation and culture supervisor, said the open house will help identify what the community values about the hall, the oldest community structure left in Campbell River. “It’s a first step to support having the hall included on the Community Heritage Register,” Sirett said in a news release. McKenzie said the Lions hope to restore the Willow Point Hall to its former glory and having the building on the city’s Heritage Register could make that a reality by helping to secure funding from both the provincial and federal government. The Lions would like to replace the kitchen, add a deck and move the hall back to allow for parking in front of the building. “It needs a new roof and it needs a foundation,” McKenzie said. “Basically we want to put the hall back to what it was.”

National Geographic expedition to New Guinea brings Campbell River raised cameraman Ian Kerr international recognition. Now based in Vancouver, Kerr was awarded the Emmy for “Outstanding CinematographyNews Coverage/ Documentaries” at the 32nd annual Emmy Awards for News and Documentaries.

Kerr’s work was recognized for the film “Lost Mummies of New Guinea”, a National Geographic Explorer documentary shot in March 2010. The film follows the expedition of two Western scientist and Ulla Lohman, a German photographer, into the land of the Anga people—possibly the last culture with living memory of human

mummification and where some plan to revive the tradition. Filming was based in a town that had electricity only three days a year. Roads were appalling and they spent as much time pushing their vehicles as driving. The most valuable item in the camera kit was the hair dryer, which Kerr used most mornings to defog his lenses.

ing inspection staff,” said Ian Buck, city planner, in a report to council. “The rear parking lot is currently fenced off to separate the proposed outdoor storage area from the rest of the parking lot.” Allan Edie, owner of Campbell River Common, said having the outdoor storage will ultimately benefit the community. “We want to get the boats and RVs off the driveways in Campbell River and into a safe location,” Edie said. “We hosted an on-site meeting (to discuss the re-zoning) and there were very few complaints other than from our three competitors in the storage business.” Bob Kristmanson, of Daigle Welding and Marine, is upset Indoor Storage Solutions wants special consideration to amend the zoning bylaw to allow outside storage. “Given the fact we are not near full capacity

at our outdoor storage facility, allowing ‘special zoning privileges’ to amend the current zoning for Indoor Storage Solutions would be detrimental to our business,” Kristmanson said. Walter Jakeway of Campbell River Storage said a shopping mall is not the place for an outdoor storage facility. “I can see no reason to grant an amendment for the inner city mall location,” Jakeway said. “If that business owner wanted an outside storage yard he chose the wrong zoning location. Could that be why my business is

located far away from the downtown core? Outside storage was intentionally designated for industrial zoned property only.” He added a large assortment of vehicles lined up along Nunns Creek would be unsightly and could even pose a risk to the fish that swim in Nunns Creek. Ted Arbour of Econo Ezy Box Storage agrees that a mall is not an appropriate place for outdoor storage. “I can assure you a six-foot high fence does not obscure the site from the public eye,” Arbour said. “If it is the city’s intention to make 16th Avenue into more of an entrance into the downtown core, these ‘special zoning privileges’ could potentially become an unwelcome eyesore.” The issue is now scheduled for a public hearing, which was slated for Tuesday evening after the Mirror went to press.
