Crap by any other name...
MECHANICAL SPECIAL We will beat any mechanical quote!
Call it what you will, garbage, rubbish, trash or junk - it’s all there for us in the multi-channel technocolour universe. We’ve known it for years - but now it’s the new reality. Not only is much of the stuff on TV akin to garbage - it is actually about garbage! Of course no one would watch a
show called ‘Garbage’ or ‘Crap’ but if it were called something titillating such as ‘Pawn Stars’ (often sadly mistaken for the more popular ‘Porn Stars’) it would be, and actually is, wildly popular. From the chaotic collections of somewhat unbalanced people previously
known as ‘untidy time! There are even lazy buggers’ who are ‘game based’ shows now affectionately about junk - have described as you seen the ‘Hoarders’ contemptuous to the ever pseudo hopeful competition treasure between self hunting junk appointed loving jerks ‘experts’ on of ‘American ‘Storage Wars,’ Tony Pickers’ it’s ‘Auction Duke all there for Wars’ and ‘It’s Antique Expert us on primeWorth What?’ So what, if anything, is the raison d’etre for the aforementioned shows about what is essentially trash? More importantly, whose fault is it that we are subjected to such trash? Well it’s partly our own for continuing to watch - and partly that of a OVER 8,000 PARTS & ACCESSORIES well meaning BBC. TV moves away from shows with merit Fishing Corner From Page 2 bring on some antiques for a panel of Antique Dealers to peruse, discuss and appraise in a non-competitive manner. Cashing in on the seventies trend to furnish homes with good quality genuine Antiques Going For A Song featured some of Britain’s brightest and best dealers and art collectors. The panel was changed from week to week and each object presented was discussed with regard to it’s its virtue, manufacture, style, history and current value. Going For A Song catapulted Arthur Negus, a soft spoken septuagenarian antiques dealer and lover of all things old and ancient to become Europe’s first pin-upboy in the world of antiques. Negus, the son of a cabinet maker of the old school had the advantage of not only knowing how

quality furniture was made but also had the love and passion associated with an antiques. The knowledge which Negus possessed was unsurpassed and though his first love was 17th and 18th century furniture he also cherished the beauty of good quality ornate silver and porcelain. Going For A Song was the forerunner to the now world famous Antiques Roadshow, both of which sought not only to entertain but to educate and inform viewers about quality collectibles, history and cultural development. Even those viewers who previously had no interest in antiques were able gain something from these well produced and informative quality television shows. The reality of such ‘reality’ shows is that they bear little, if any, relevance
to what is actually going on in the real world of antiques and collectibles. While the leading characters and presenters seem to have all the stereotypical eccentricities which the world of entertainment has led us to expect, they give us very little of either substance or value. Perhaps most noticeable of all is the fact that more often than not the ‘star/s’ of the show admit they actually know nothing of the object in front of them and they invariably have to ‘call a friend who is an expert’ in order to get a valuation. Sadly, TV has sunk to the lowest common denominator by moving away from shows with merit. Instead of presenting us with something which informs, educates and entertains all we have is a bunch of self-

hen I first started shore fishing in Campbell River 5 years ago, my destination was Rotary Park. I met a few regulars who were at the spot every evening, we swapped stories, traded flies and enjoyed the evening fishing.

The few times I fished the spot this year were different. Fishing was slow for the run of pinks during the summer and the groups of anglers have scattered. Shore fishing for Coho continues at Salmon Point and some nice catches of hatchery clipped Coho are coming in. Pink and silver spoons are catching fish and the odd Coho is caught by using a pink or blue bodied fly that is weighted. This time of year is a Victor Isaacson bonus if the weather stayss Fishing at Salmon Point pleasant as experienced the October 22nd weekend. Fishermen came out on Echo Lake and a few fish were hooked on streamer flies. Echo is a busy spot on weekends and one local angler made the comment that this was not a peaceful lake. I met a couple from Nanaimo who were looking to fish from their canoe and enjoy an outing on the lake. Fishing on the Campbell Fis River in October can be very Ri interesting to a person new in to this area. Water levels can be high, the weather ca can be rainy and cold, ca but this is a spot where bu regulars can fish and fish re can be caught. Last year ca at this time of a year, I met a local angler who landed pbell River a 40 4 pound spring on a fly. Fishing action on the Cam Many anglers are trying for Coho but chum and the odd spring can be hooked. These fish can destroy a fly rod but it’s an experience too talk about. Once the fishing season iss over many anglers will clutterr up their driveways and yardss with boats, trailers and motorr homes. Roy Williams from Indoor Storage Solutionss has a facility that is heated and secure. On my last visitt to this facility a number off fishing lodge owners havee moved their fleet of boatss from outdoors to insidee Handmade Fishing Lures displayed at storage for the winter Crabby Bob’s Seafood months.

Centre hopes to be a HUB for spiritual living Imagine a world that works for everyone, a world in peace. This is the vision of Jill Brocklehurst, Spiritual Director of the Centre for Spiritual Living. She says it is a radical and progressive idea and, “If we don’t do something toward this vision, then who will? If we don’t do it now, when? Brocklehurst says. Brocklehurst believes peace is totally possible. After studying
the philosophical principles discussed in the Science of Mind by Ernest Holmes and putting them to practice since 1997, Brocklehurst believes that world peace is inevitable when people align with their own inner truth and realize there are as many paths as there are people. As self love and acceptance increase with the understanding that we are all part of this one Life and that it is impossible to have less

Life than anyone else, a growing acceptance of others and their part in the Whole expands. The basic principle states that our thinking creates our reality. Just like so many have seen demonstrated in the movie, The Secret (2006), when we get conscious about our thoughts, release the ones that no longer serve us and take on the ones necessary to build our good life, great change happens. This is what Brocklehurst and
a team of members from the Centre for Spiritual Living are doing now. They have an idea and they are calling it the HUB (Humanity Unfolding Brilliantly), an open spiritual community for the spiritual seeker of today. This team has set out to purchase a property in Campbell River. The Centre will move their offices and classroom to this location and in addition create a residential community that promotes global

This sector believe spirituality is important but do not consider themselves religious. The Centre for Spiritual Living wants to expand their current programs to embrace those looking for the support of spiritual community but are not interested in church. Brocklehurst sees the HUB as the solution. “I want to create a community that practices a balanced life seven days of the week. By opening the HUB we can be available in a variety of ways for a diverse population. There will be something for everyone and a spiritual community each can call home. People desire to live

a better life and break out of old patterns and beliefs that are no longer serving them. This is hard to do alone. Moving through change is best done with the unconditional support of community. The Centre intends to raise $200,000 toward the purchase of the HUB, and is looking for financial support from the community at large. Charitable dollars can make a significant impact locally. As individuals are empowered in their personal lives there will be a positive impact on Campbell River and beyond. Those who desire to be a part a shift in global consciousness can begin to support the community right here in Campbell River. More information is found on the web site: www.crHUB.ca. There will be private quarters for individuals willing to commit to learning the practical application of Science of Mind principles and spiritual tools to empower their lives. Advocating for a better life for the disabled Aleister Gwynne, Black Press PORT HARDY – The world can be a frightening and uncaring place for those who suffer from various disabilities, but thanks to the B.C. Association for Community Living the darkness is lifting. At a recent open house at Robert Scott Elementary School, the BCACL outlined its goals and celebrated the opening of its new permanent office located in Room 1 of Robert Scott. The BCACL is a part of the North Island Community
Services Society and was “founded by parents who dreamed of a better life for their sons and daughters,” according to its website. The organization’s goal is to help people who suffer from disabilities, particularly intellectual disabilities. It is hoped that with the right support they can be “as productive as they can be,” says program organizer Lenore Benedict. The BCACL provides a variety of social services in five main areas: supports to children and families, income security, inclusive education,

Stepping into Comox history Erin Haluschak Black Press COMOX — The museum that displays the evolution of Comox has undergone an evolution of its own. More than a month into its new space in the former library building on Comox Avenue, the Comox Archives and Museum (CAMS) along with
the Pearl Ellis Gallery are embracing the expanded space, more visibility and new location. “Having the two venues together, we’re getting arts and culture to overlap,” explained Kay Bukta, curator of CAMS. “What we put down for arts, we learn from culture. We really want people to come in and make it part of their lifestyle
and watch the museum grow.” Bukta says since the move from the lower level backside of the building, both organizations have recorded a significant increase in visitors. She added the new space lends well to her vision of expanding a timeframe — a visual history of Comox that displays who was here and what they did.
3X7 Comox Mayor Paul Ives opened the new space for the Comox Archives and Museum in the former library building on Comox Avenue. In addition to more wall space, Bukta said she is also focused on adding books to the library. “We now have three stations for people to sit and read, and a card file system for people to mark down where they finished reading so it’s easy to find their page when they come back,” she noted. “There will be slideshows running on an ongoing basis as well.” Bukta added her

main focus with the space is to highlight how an area of 100 people came to be the town it is today. “I want to show the flavour on how the pioneers survived. I want people to get that feeling of how that is — to look around and see completely nothingness and how they developed with the economies (in Cumberland and Courtenay) around them.” She noted the new
space allows visitors to ‘step in’ to the timeframes to see to see what families were in Comox at the same time, and provides a way of bringing a physical element to living history. Bukta said she encourages individuals to share their story or any other information they might have about the history of the area. “We’re always looking for another source to make sure the information is
correct. We encourage anyone to come in and add or make comments. “I really want to make sure we have as much history as we can,” she added. The museum has a variety of items for sale such as 2012 calendars and cards, and is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteer opportunities are available; for more information call 250339-2885.
MP recognizes women’s military contributions there’s more online » vicnews.com

John Duncan, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Island North, honoured women’s invaluable contributions to Canada’s military throughout history. “On the front lines and behind the scenes, women have been
there for Canada, in times of conflict and of peace,” said Duncan. “During Women’s History Month, and always, Canadians can celebrate and be inspired by the courage and selflessness of women in all three branches of our
military.” “I encourage all Canadians to discover and celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of women in the Canadian military forces, both today and throughout our history,” said
the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women. “Canadian women have a long history of excellence in Canadian military forces.”
