Thefts, assaults on the rise Thefts and assaults are increasing in Campbell River, according to the RCMP quarterly report. The report spans from April to the end of June, and the amount of calls the detachment received was about the same this year as last year, according to RCMP Insp. Lyle Gelinas. However, the number of assaults went up from 91 last year to 122 this year. Also, theft over $5,000 went up from three last year to 23 this year, and theft under $5,000 rose from 181 last year to 243 this year. But Sgt. Craig Massey of the Campbell River RCMP pointed out that the reports fluctuate and that snapshots showing three months of statistics can seem more alarming than they actually are. He expects the numbers for these categories will go down again in the coming months. On a positive note, frauds went down, from 31 last year to 22 this year, and traffic collisions went from 95 last year to 74 this year. The current priorities of the Campbell River RCMP are: police community relations directed at youth safety in aboriginal communities, and communication Continued on A2

on its website, and some find the numbers shocking. In the first quarterly period from Jan.-March 2011, posted on the website on Aug. 24, DFO issued permits to kill 141 California sea lions, 37 harbour seals,

and two Steller sea lions. Catherine Stewart, with Living Oceans Society, said the numbers worry her. “The fact that they are acknowledging shooting and killing over 140 of them in just the first quar-

ter alone seems to indicate that the problem is not getting better, it’s getting worse,” said Stewart of the California sea lions. “What is the number going to be for the entire year? Why is it so high?” Continued on A2

directed at First Nation communities, organized crime directed at local and outside organized crime groups, traffic directed at prolific suspended drivers, and crime reduction directed at prolific offenders and crime hotspots. On April 17, Crime Stoppers added the ability to submit tips from iPhones, and on May 1 the organized crime and gang tip line opened. “In this quarter there were 55 tips received, five arrests, 33 matters cleared, nine charges, three weapons recov-

ered, and $1200 worth of property recovered,” wrote Gelinas in his report. He noted that Restorative Justice program referrals were down from the first quarter but added that they are on the rise again now. T he majority of of fenders refer red this quar ter were youth with three being adults. Gelinas said the program continues to benefit the detachment and the community. According to Gelinas, the Police Dog Section (PDS) calls for service went down in this quarter, but are picking up. The dogs

recently had their skill sets upgraded in highrisk tracking, building clearing, and vehicle stops, and he said they are integral to police work in Campbell River. “It is a well known fact that the type of individuals our members deal with are generally more violent due to mental health issues compounded by alcohol or drugs,” he wrote. “The increased lack of respect for authority in general is another factor we deal with daily. “The above noted issues are easier to resolve when a PDS unit is available.”

Seal cull: Aquaculture industry says lethal control is used as a last resort Continued from A1

B.C. Salmon Farmers Association executive director Mary Ellen Walling said California sea lion populations are on the rise around Vancouver Island, creating more interaction between the mammals and farms. She said lethal control is used

as a “last resort,” and pointed out that the animals can be dangerous to humans as well as the farms themselves. “They can be a threat to the farm structures obviously – they can rip into the nets, they can potentially cause escapes – but also they can be quite aggressive

towards humans,” said Walling. DFO issues the permits to kill California sea lions and harbour seals because the populations are considered stable, according to DFO communications advisor Michelle Imbeau. However, Steller sea lions are listed under

3X7

READERSHIP SURVEY

the federal Species at Risk Act, but can be killed when the farm makes a special request to DFO. Steller sea lion lethal control permits are considered on a case by case basis. While Stewart acknowledged California sea lion and harbour seal populations are stable right now, she pointed out that the basking shark population used to be stable in B.C. but the fish are now endangered because commercial fishers were allowed to kill them when they got caught in their nets. “It would seem that the populations are healthy, but I think we only have to look at our history as a species to

see what happens when we think animals are abundant,” said Stewart. Walling said that farms near Tofino had an increase in killings about five years ago when the mammal populations in the area rose; predator barriers around the farms were strengthened in response, and the amount of problems, and kills, decreased. According to Walling, far ms on East Vancouver Island are now working to do the same. “We’re expecting the numbers to decline as we go forward,” said Walling. DFO will continue posting the quarterly

reports, with the second one coming sometime this fall, according to Imbeau. DFO will also post summary information of mammal deaths from past years “in the coming months,” and is taking steps to monitor farms and work with the industry to decrease the number of kills. “DFO staff will also be visiting farm sites prior to and during the peak marine mammal season to specifically inspect the marine mammal mitigation methods in use,” said Imbeau. “A working group comprised of DFO staff and industry representatives has recently been estab-

lished with a goal of reducing the level of marine mammal interactions at aquaculture facilities.” Stewart said she doesn’t doubt the numbers will go down, but added that the killing of these marine mammals adds to a long list of reasons – including the controversial possibility of the wild salmon decline – that this type of fish farming should stop. “It’s just another indication that net cage technology is not sustainable, and they need to accept that and start planning to transition to closed systems where they won’t have these kind of problems.”

WORK WITH US

It takes a village to raise a child

– and a united community to make a difference! The 2011 water awareness survey and community actions show that the perception of unlimited water and over-watering of lawns is changing. In 2010, only 50 per cent of residents knew water Luisa Richardson consumption tripled in summer due to over-watering lawns and that this affected the city’s ďŹ re-ďŹ ghting reserve during peak periods. In 2011, 72 per cent of those surveyed were aware of the water-lawn-ďŹ re connection. People’s actions reected this improvement: Many people hand-watered during the day, raised lawn mower blades, watered lawns less frequently or used a broom and a bucket for cleaning the driveway. Thank you to everyone who followed sprinkling restrictions or followed our advice for healthy lawns on less (or no) water. “My lawn used to be brown and weedy,â€? said Dani Cryderman. “I aerated, added a little fertilizer, watered less than one inch per week and cut the grass to four inches. The difference is unbelievable. Our lawn is long and lush.â€? Thank you to water hotline callers, contacting us about sprinkling permits, over-watering reports or information about sprinkler system problems. This helps us understand the barriers that some people face, like malfunctioning, or “odds/evens unfriendlyâ€? timers. Thank you to Jerry Mear, CertiďŹ ed Irrigation Specialist and Sandra Milligan, Communities in Bloom 2009 winner, for tips on what to do in spring and fall for a healthy, waterefďŹ cient lawn in summer. Finally, thank you to: • All of our water educators, past and present, • Jenny Brunn and the City Water Department and Communications Department, • Local newspapers and radio stations for providing free editorial space and some free advertisement, • All focus group, workshop, Powerful Water Tours and door-to-door survey participants, • Everyone who has offered comments, suggestions, complaints • Residents who did their part to be water-wise. Electric cars being considered in Campbell River The president of Campbell River Electric Wheels has a shiny new car he would like to find a home for – but it’s not legally allowed on Campbell River streets. Stanley Elliott, who heads the company, recently took possession of a dealership that allows him to sell electric cars at his store. “This is the first time we’ve had an electric car in Campbell River available for use on the

streets,” Elliott told city council Tuesday night. “We think having these vehicles is in keeping with Campbell River’s decision to go green. These cars will reduce the city’s carbon footprint dramatically.” The only problem is, the electric car, also known as a low speed vehicle, is not legally permitted on Campbell River streets unless the city passes a bylaw allowing the use of the vehicle. Elliott urged the city to adopt a bylaw similar to ones already in

place in Tofino, Oak Bay, Esquimalt, Qualicum Beach and Ucluelet, to allow electric vehicles to be driven on neighbourhood streets. The cars, which do not use fuel but instead run on a battery, do not produce emissions and cannot travel more than 40 kilometres per hour. Elliott said the cars are convenient for those making several short trips a day, such as landscapers or shipyard workers who need to go back and forth for supplies. “T here’s a larg e

amount of driving that can be done and it will save people a boatload of money,” Elliott said. Instead of fuelling up at a gas station, the car’s battery is put on a charger for about six hours. Elliott said one charge, in ideal conditions, is typically good for about 76 kilometres. If the car is travelling up a lot of hills or driven in cold weather, the temperature of the battery changes and the charge could last for just 46 kilometres. Elliott said the

lifespan of the battery is between four and eight years. According to a quote by Forever Green Electric Cars, a base model costs $11,995 while a vehicle with standard features comes at a cost of $14,045. To upgrade and add additional options, it will cost $21,720. Council chose to defer Elliott’s bylaw request to the city’s transportation department and the Environmental Advisory Committee for more information on how electric cars could fit into the city’s priorities.

our Black Press community newspaper, the Campbell River Mirror, has the Tour de Rock covered. As an official media sponsor of the 2011 Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock, Black Press has pulled out all the stops to give readers insight into every angle of the Sept. 24 to Oct. 7 ride. journey and will be keeping it up throughout the two-week ride. With less

than a week to go before the riders embark from Port Alice and start their

1,000-kilometre pedal down-Island, Black Press newspapers have added lots of options for readers to keep updated on the tour’s progress. Of course, our traditional print papers have already offered numerous news stories about the tour, the riders from each community, and the people who help them out. On the web, we’ve expanded our Tour de Rock presence with a ridespecific site (www.bclocalnews.com/tour-de-rock/) with tons of ride-related content. Each of our websites has several clear entry points to lead you to the Tour de Rock site, which includes

lots of information about the ride, an interactive route map and official tour program available online, a TwitterFall (People can contribute to the ongoing conversation by following the hash tag #tourderock), a public Flickr photo gallery, videos, links to other Tour de Rock pages, as well as Chris Bush’s blog and ways to donate to him or any of the riders. Readers can expect this site to start getting lots of activity, and even more fresh content. Journalists in our various Island newsrooms will also be tweeting as the tour rides into their towns and loading stories and photos to the website as

quickly as they can. Readers can even help contribute by submitting their own photos to the Flickr gallery (www.flickr.com/ groups/2011tourderock/ pool/) or videos – the more the merrier. To upload video, simply go to www. BCDailyBuzz.com, set up a profile and load your video. It gets even better, Black Press is giving away two bike packages from Trek Bikes in Victoria – readers can enter at any Black Press office and online entry will be available once the tour gets underway. Winners will be chosen and announced near the completion of the ride.

Video students promote businesses KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

A group of students want to “shout out” about Campbell River while at the same time gain valuable experience in business and new media. Ten students, from Grade 9 up to 21-yearsold, fresh off a summer video production and animation program, want to profile local businesses and social groups to a world-wide audience. “We would like to interview local business owners and have them tell the world

why their business is so integral to Campbell River and what they love about living and working here,” says Diana Camerin, career facilitator at Timberline school and organizer of what’s being called the Shout-Out Campbell River Campaign. Camerin’s ultimate goal is to produce videos good enough to be played in BC Ferries’ terminals. The videos will highlight a business and include on-screen interviews as well as footage of the business.

In exchange for the exposure, the students are asking for small donations. “For a jar full of pennies we will go into your business, organization, school or event and help you Shout Out about Campbell River,” Camerin says. “This is not about asking for a handout, it’s an opportunity to do some good work for the community.” The class has a goal to raise enough pennies this school year to fill an entire school bus. The students only have two cameras and

two computers for editing but could use more. Funds raised will go towards equipment, bursaries for students to further their education, the new Life Skills house at Timberline that is slated to open next month, as well as any other programs in the school district in need of extra dollars. “It’s up to the kids to discuss what happens with the funds,” Camerin says. “They will have to decide how it’s dispersed and what the application form (to apply for funding) will

look like.” Students also hope to bolster tourism to the region by sharing the videos they create on YouTube and on the group’s website, www. shoutoutcanada.webs. com which is still a work in progress. All businesses interviewed by the students will be listed on the website’s calendar and will also receive a sign to place in their window. Transcripts of all the interviews will be available under the website’s Comments section. For those who prefer

to not appear on video, the students can create a graphic novel, similar to a cartoon, with word bubbles to describe the business or organization. “We’ve tried to get creative and do as much as we could,” Camerin says. “Our ultimate goal with this is to have it duplicated in other school districts.” Local businesses interested in being profiled by the students can visit the students’ website at www.shoutoutcanada.webs.com and click the Contact Us link.

Our View

Complacency shaken up There’s nothing like an earthquake to shake us, at least briefly, out of complacency. Everybody from the Fraser Valley to Cape Scott was talking about the We say: Develop Sept. 9 6.4-magnitude quake south of a post-earthquake Port Alice because so many felt or witnessed its effects. It was followed by a plan for your smaller quake a few days later. Vancouver Island continues to creep family toward the coast of the B.C. mainland. The Juan de Fuca Plate on which we sit is the smallest of Earth’s tectonic plates, subducting, or sliding

underneath, the North American Plate. The force that builds when the two plates have been stuck for some time is released in an earthquake when the plates move suddenly. It’s not comforting to know that what we think is rock-solid Vancouver Island rests on a plate that is on top of what is called the mantle, which in turn floats on an underground ocean of molten, superheated rock called magma. Another disquieting thought involves the most powerful quake ever recorded on Canadian soil, which happened just west of Courtenay in 1946. We can’t do anything to control or even accurately

predict when the next quake will happen, but there are things we can do to be prepared when it does. The Provincial Emergency Program website – www. pep.bc.ca – has a wealth of helpful information. Foremost is being prepared to survive for at least 72 hours without help. While it’s tricky to educate your children without scaring them, PEP recommends developing a postquake plan and discussing it with your family. It’s easy to think it won’t happen to us, but that’s what people in the Comox Valley thought before 1946. – Black Press

Good point: Heating The article in the Wednesday, Sept. 14 paper titled “City Hall’s one-of-a Kind green roof...” motivated me to find a calculator and crunch some numbers. A 25 per cent reduction in electrical costs equating to $15,000 in savings converts to an initial cost of $60,000 per year, reduced to $45,000 per year. That is quite impressive! The forecast 12.5 per cent reduction in heating/cooling costs equating to cost savings of $2,100 per year converts to an initial cost of $16,800 per year, reduced to $14,700. That appears somewhat less impressive. The 15 per cent energy savings of $4,240 during the five-month heating season from November to March converts to an initial seasonal heating cost of $28,266.67 or $5,653.33 per month, reduced by $848 per month to $4,805.33. Now I’m getting less than impressed.... I’m getting confused. If 12.5 per cent of the total annual heating and cooling costs converts to an initial annual cost of $16,800, how can 15 per cent of the seasonal heating cost convert to $28,266.67? That is $11,466.67 greater than the supposed total annual heating and cooling costs. Something doesn’t add up, or....I’m confused. Accuse me of being picky, but electrical consumption at a rate of “53,000kilowatts per hour?” Perhaps the person intended to refer to 53,000 kilowatt hours, which coincidentally if multiplied by a rate of $0.08 /kW.h happens to be $4,240 the same as the seasonal saving stated in the article. B.C. imports American-style politics

Tom Fletcher B.C. Views

The Americanization of Canadian and B.C. politics is gathering speed now that legislated four-year terms are finally settling in at the federal and provincial level. Scheduled elections are an important reform, but the downside is that they seem to lead inexorably to constant campaigning. The latest example is the B.C. Liberal Party’s website and radio campaign directed at upstart B.C. Conservative leader John Cummins. “Strange days indeed,” NDP leader Adrian Dix mused on his Facebook page. “The Liberals, after a week of nasty attacks on the NDP, launched an anti-John Cummins website. Absent a policy agenda, the Liber-

als seem to want to blame others for their problems. This too will backfire as Ms. Clark is again misreading the public mood. People are demanding substance in politics these days, not photo ops and negative attacks.” I see nothing strange in Dix rushing to the defence of Cummins, who represents the NDP’s best hope for a move into the legislature’s west wing. It is a bit odd for Dix to accuse others of lacking policy, as he leads a party that has been distinguished by little other than negative political tactics since its near-death experience in 2001. This is almost as strange as the B.C. Liberals damning Cummins as a politician who “says one thing and does

another.” Yeah, that can really come back to bite you. There hasn’t been much of an antiDix effort yet, but you can be sure there is one sitting on the shelf, prepared for Clark’s recently-abandoned fall election plan. The “nasty attacks” Dix complained about were focused on his federal party’s sudden preference for Quebec seats in the House of Commons, and sniping about which Premier Clark hired more political staff – Christy or Glen? And it was the NDP who started the negative cycle with their own TV ad, featuring “Campbell Crunch” and “Christy Crunch” cereals, both “loaded with HST.” (I can put to rest the ghastly rumour

that the B.C. Liberal war room will soon unleash a gang of angry, unemployed HST stick-men.) The U.S. tactic of going negative early, to define your rivals before they can define themselves, has worked spectacularly for Stephen Harper’s Conservatives. They scorched federal Liberal leaders Stéphane Dion and Michael Ignatieff, and public distaste for these methods does not seem to have hurt them. The anti-Cummins campaign has a similar style, and there are indications that it may have been produced in Toronto. The website, canttrustcummins. ca, uses a bug-eyed photo of the former fisherman-MP that makes him Continued on A11

It doesn’t add up Search for saviour aided by museum 70 years later Continued from A10 Apart from stroking ourselves about how green we are and the awards that we have been given, let’s look at the final economics. The roof cost $489,000. The annual savings in heating costs has been identified as $4,240 by city staff. Let’s be optimistic and hope that the annual cooling costs could be reduced by at least one half that amount, $2,120 for a total of $6,360 per year. $489,000 roof cost, divided by $6,360 saving per year, equals 76 years to break even. And it is...used by City staff as a gathering place? Now I am not impressed. I shall avoid with extreme difficulty, pondering on the subject of heating City Hall with the hot air emanating from City Hall. Some of my other opinions: I support Local Improvements for Campbellton. I support R-1A for Barry Forberg. I support wage increases for City CUPE Members. E. W. (Ted) Maxwell

A prolonged search for details of a near fatal accident finally paid off in Campbell River recently, almost 70 years after I received emergency surgery and lengthy rehab in Lady of Lourdes Hospital there. I was a 14-year-old lo gger at Menzies Bay camp in 1942. We were in the process of moving the donkey to a new setting and I was sent down the mountain to retreive

the claw bar needed to remove guy line spikes from stumps. The wind was strong and a gust blew down a tree- which landed on me. I was pinned there, semiconscious, until a crew member found me and I was transported to Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Campbell River where a talented Dr. St. John saved my life. I had sustained broken ankles, spinal injury and many scrapes and bruises. Dr.

and inspired a desperate Gordon Campbell to sing country music and take a hard line on aboriginal relations, to stitch the ruptured right back together. Cummins defined himself as a ReformAlliance-Conservative MP by railing against

treaties, and that continues to be the core of his thin policy book. His other two main ideas are also pure rural populism. He vows to scrap the carbon tax and suggests that municipalities should cut their costs to fund transit.

Voters will have a better idea by the end of this week if Clark’s plan for “defending and creating jobs” is really new policy, or merely more photo ops. B.C. has had its first taste of Californiastyle tax revolt. Now we have two years

St. John said that if the heavy rainfall hadn’t created a thick layer of mushy mud on ground surface, I’d have been killed instantly. Another (unknowing) contributor to my survival was Adolph Hitler. Where do you people get off on providing such ir responsible reporting? I’m referring to Renee Andor’s “Salmon farmers confident Cohen will not link wild fish decline to farmed fish.” FYI, I spent several rather intense days recently at the Cohen Commission in Vancouver. With objectivity and open mind I witnessed testimonies and evidence that was quite astonishing, and observed rather suspicious behaviour from the salmon farm industry representatives. What I saw was the provincial, federal and salmon farmers association lawyers with their statements and questioning were obviously coming from a position of protecting themselves. It all made me wonder why would government be concerned about any of this ... they supposedly have nothing to hide, they should have a neutral position? As well it seemed odd that if the salmon

farming industry is truly doing nothing wrong then why would they be putting up such significant opposition and struggle? On several occasions when the salmon farming representatives were on the stand being questioned by the environmental movement lawyer there was much tension, suspicious conduct with faltering voices and evasive replies. The provincial, federal and salmon farming association lawyers on several occasions attempted to discredit the environmental movement representatives’ testimony and work, but I feel failed to do so, in fact backfired to a point I felt awkward and embarrassed for them. Despite strong efforts from the provincial, federal and salmon farming association lawyers to hinder and quash some of the testimony I feel its fair to say that myself and the packed gallery of public on lookers took away from it that

along that the salmon far m industry is deceitful and can not be trusted. In fact deceit, denial and confusion is all the salmon farming industry can offer because if they spoke the truth it would sound like what the anti-salmon farming movement has been saying all along. Surely this is not news to you? So what would you expect Mary Ellen Walling to say, and why would you so irresponsibly publish her version along with such a headline? I was there and I did not hear what Walling is saying. Walling’s version is a distorted, cherry picked version to support what she wants heard. It’s people such as yourselves that only serve to propagate the facade the salmon farming industry does nothing wrong, and consider yourself part of the problem and part of the reason wild salmon are in decline. the salmon farming industry is destroying our wild fish stocks with diseases and the government has been colluding with salmon farming industry to hide this. Myself and, I feel, many others could not help but realize this because of the compelling evidence presented and the salmon farming industry and government’s dubious behaviour including frequent contradiction and retraction of statements. This all helped to validate the existence of a government cover up and deceit on numerous fronts. The entire thing was rather surreal causing me to stop and ask myself “what am I witnessing here?” From the often quite damning evidence and numerous gasps and comments from the gallery I can’t see that Justice Cohen could not have developed a similar take on it. So this all supports the opposition movement’s position all

Pearl Palmer

January 30, 1939 – September 14, 2011 It is with sad hearts that the family of Pearl Palmer announces the peaceful passing of Pearl on September 14th at the age of 72. She was predeceased by her parents, Cecil and Edna Cochran and is remembered with love by her husband Stan, four children Terry (Don Dobson), Rod (Amy), Greg (Tina) and Kathy (Mark McKay), eleven grandchildren Justin, Marisa, Emily, Zachary, Marie, Rachael, Jillian, David John, Caeli, Brynn, Broedy, three great grandchildren, sister May (Bud Woodman) and many other special friends and family. Pearl was born in Kamloops, BC. Her father’s work with BC Power brought them to Campbell River in 1952 where she lived at the John Hart Townsite. Soon after, she met and married her devoted husband of many years, Stan Palmer. Pearl was dedicated and passionate in all that she undertook. Her varied career included working at Simpson Sears, assisting as a teacher’s aide and helping as a victim assistance worker. Pearl became a successful entrepreneur by starting her own preschool and establishing a highly regarded Bed and Breakfast in Willow Point. Pearl would say that her greatest accomplishment was her family and this was her life long focus. She will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother who treasured the love and laughter that ďŹ lled her home. At Pearl’s request a memorial service will not be held. Memorial tributes may be made in her memory directly to: BC Lung Association, 2675 Oak St., Vancouver, BC, V6H 2K2 (Telephone 1-800-665-5864) www.bc.lung.ca. Currents around the fishing pier are not fast enough to generate electricity but the area is suitable for research and demonstration purposes, a tidal power assessment study found. Campbell River is the first municipality in B.C. to lead such a study. “It’s really, really groundbreaking and we’ve had the opportunity to work with the top tidal researchers and engineers in the world,” said Amber Zirnhelt, the city’s

A group of cyclists will ride into the city this week with an important goal – to

give all Campbell River kids equal opportunity to play sports. Cyclists representing the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program, a national charity

that helps financially disadvantaged kids participate in sport and recreation, will be in Campbell River this Friday. As part of their tour, the 24 riders from

Centre, as the city had hoped but the area could be an ideal test location. “The best way for the city to move forward on promoting tidal energy would be to promote Campbell River as a research and demonstration site and partner with industry and senior government,” Zirnhelt said. “Often researchers prefer sites with slower currents.” Coun. Andy Adams said the city’s energy and emissions task force sees a research facility as a potential economic generator and would like to see

Rivercorp play a lead role in the project. “I view this as best left to a more entrepreneurial body than the city,” Adams said. Coun. Mary Storry agreed. “Rivercorp is the perfect vehicle to explore these opportunities more,” she said. Zirnhelt recommended council choose to partner with the tidal power industry and senior government to promote Campbell River as a site for tidal power research and development. “Campbell River now

has the opportunity to access complete tidal model mapping of the Discovery Passage area surrounding the community that could also be used for developers interested in larger scale tidal demonstration projects,” Zirnhelt said. “Campbell River has the opportunity to put itself on the map as one of Canada’s best locations for tidal research and demonstration.” In the end, council chose to defer any decision on the matter until more information is available regarding available funds in Rivercorp’s budget.

across Canada will distribute sports kits for local kids. “Campbell River kits will include a badminton set, a bocce ball set, skipping, soccer and yoga,” said Katie McCabe, Canadian Tire Marketing and Events Manager. The cyclists will present the kits to the Campbell River Multicultural and Immigrant Centre which will distribute the kits to those in need. The cyclists will then head to Canadian Tire, arriving around 11:30 a.m. for a small celebration event.

Darrell Anderson, local Canadian Tire General Manager, said there will be a raffle for a new bike outside the store, weather permitting. “It’s for a good cause,” Anderson said. “It’s certainly good to get kids involved in sports and it’s quite an undertaking because it is a long ride in a short amount of time.” The group will ride from Victoria to Vancouver, covering 500 kilometres in five days. The group – which is pedalling through B.C. for the first time – hopes to raise $200,000.

Arts & Entertainment Artists tackle B.C.’s devastating beauty

The public is invited to the opening of a major new exhibition featuring nine B.C. artists at the Campbell River Art Gallery Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. Gallery Curator Liz Larsen Stoneberger put out a call for works early this year from local artists who wanted to tackle the subject of Devastating Beauty. Larsen Stoneberger’s concept is that although we are surrounded by immense natural beauty on Vancouver Island, environmental and societal ills can devastate our surroundings. The artists whose works were chosen for the new show are from Campbell River, Quadra Island, Cortes Island, the Sunshine Coast and other parts of B.C., so they know our stunning landscapes intimately, as well as our potential to negatively impact our environment. “The premise of ‘Devastating Beauty’ is the revelation of these unseen and sometimes purposef u l ly ove rl o o ke d harsh realities, Larsen Stoneberger said. “Working in a variety

of mediums and styles, the artists selected for this exhibition have created pieces that speak directly to the theme, dealing with unsettling issues like homelessness, environmental abuse and urban sprawl. Artists featured in the exhibition include Leanne Long eway,

Bob McLeod and Carol Seeley of Campbell River, Richard Calver and John Schevers of Quadra Island, Kristen Scholfield-Sweet of Cortes Island, Meghan Hildebrand of Powell River, Annerose Georg eson of Vanderhoof and Cat Fink of Alexis Creek and Victoria. Larsen

Stoneberger said she is elated at the wide variety of styles and visions presented by each artist. “The exhibition showcases regional talent, allowing for wonderful juxtapositions of artists who perhaps would not normally have the opportunity to exhibit together,

she said. The Curator’s Invitational will be at the Campbell River Art Gallery, in both the Main and Discovery Galleries, from Sept. 23 to Oct. 28. The work in the exhibition will be offered for rent and/or for sale, as part of the Gallery’s Art Rental program. The exhibition is sponsored by the Friends of the Campbell River Art Gallery. Staff and volunteers look forward to welcoming the public to see the exhibition and meet many of the artists at the opening reception for ‘Devastating Beauty’ Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. For more information, call the Campbell River Art Gallery at 250-287-2261, email contact@crartgallery.ca or visit www. crartgallery.ca
