Peer counselling society needs more volunteers Black Press COMOX — Berwick Retirement Residence recently held a Community Resource Showcase, and the Comox Senior Peer Counselling Society was invited to present a table of information. The brochures and booklets were presented by the staff and volunteers and were so popular that they had to restock. The event was wellattended by interested residents of Berwick house and their families, as well as by community members. The fundraising committee of the CV Senior Peer Counselling Society recently presented a barbecue for its staff, volunteers and guests. This was to provide
a social time to welcome volunteers back after the summer and an opportunity to introduce new program co-ordinator, Susan Armstrong. More than 30 people attended and enjoyed the food that was donated in part by Costco, Natural Pastures Cheese and Quality Foods. Board director Les Corbett was volunteer extraordinaire. Board members assisted and were able to connect with the volunteers and hear their stories. Lynne Brown, chief operating officer of United Way, Central and Northern Vancouver Island, was pleased to attend and meet some of the volunteers who work so hard with clients. The Comox

Valley Senior Peer Counselling Society says it realizes how important it is to acknowledge all the hours of time given by our volunteers as they continue to provide support to the seniors of our valley. Armstrong says she is looking forward
to working with all the volunteers of the society as it moves in new directions. Due to referral volume, the society says it needs many more volunteer visitors and three additional field supervisors. The supervisors assist with visiting
potential clients and determining which of the group’s programs might suit the client. Training is provided. If you are interested in these volunteer opportunities, contact Armstrong at 250-8900099. Office hours are Monday to Friday from 1 to 4 p.m.

with Don Daniels I decided to make a tour to the ¿shing spots in Campbell River and see where the action was. Vickie Atherton and Al Grudzinskas showed me some areas to ¿sh around Fry Lake. My travels next day took me to Discovery Pier, Rotary Park and Salmon Point. Emilie Longtin has been working at the concession stand on Discovery Pier since mid June. She sees many local anglers who visit the pier on a regular basis to ¿sh and have coffee. An angler by the name of Jack has caught 6 ¿sh in 2 days; a tourist from Japan caught a small Coho that was released. The last day to rent gear will be October 15th. In Campbell River the pinks were low in numbers and the beach ¿shing should start to Emilie Longtin pick up. A number of local anglers can be spotted at Rotary Park, and most areas are easy to get to. Salmon Point, Saratoga Beach and Oyster River are areas where Coho and cutthroat trout can be caught. The Puntledge River is a busy spot for ¿shing beginning October 1st. Browns Bay Chum derby is set for October 21, 22, and 23rd. Victoria Lake has been ¿shing well for big trout. Most anglers will ¿sh the bottom end of the lake trolling an f-4 Àat¿sh. On the Ày try a minnow imitation or leech pattern. Campbell River now has a large indoor storage area available for boats, RVs, automobiles and motor homes. Indoor Storage Solutions is located close to the Discovery Harbour Marina. If you have a ¿shing story or picture to share contact me at dond@campbellrivermirror.com.

So many with hypothyroidism would benefit from naturopathic therapies Marianne, age 28, consulted with me about her thyroid. She had been on Synthroid for years and wanted to know if she could come off of it. Underactive thyroid is under diagnosed by many North American MD’s because most have not yet adopted the new parameters for diagnosis set by American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists who have lowered the normal range for optimal thyroid function from 5.5 to 3.0- 2.5mU/L.

In other words the higher the number the more under active the thyroid is, so there are many people with TSH in the range of 2.5-5.5 who may benefit from naturopathic therapies to improve the function of the thyroid. Usually patients who have a TSH of 5.5 or greater are put on thyroid hormone replacement therapy with prescriptions such as Synthroid or Eltroxin which only contain T4 hormone. In the case of Marianne she was already on Synthroid, so I gave her additional thyroid support which includes the mineral selenium which helps the body to convert T4 hormone into
the active T3 form, form. The other option essentials fats found in is to take T3 hormone fish oils which improve in the form of slow the functioning of all release liothyronine cell membranes in the in addition to T4 body, Vitamin D which hormone. are critical for the basic metabolism of the body so when this gland is under active it affects the entire body. Marianne learned that even though her MD did not want her to use dessicated thyroid that she had the option to try it to see if it gave her better results than Synthroid. She found out what many of my patients know, that optimal thyroid support is more that just replacing T4. Every year we check the TSH and T4 hormone levels in her blood to confirm that the dosage she is on keeps her in a good balance. Marianne will not be able to get off the hormone but at least we can lower her dosage because of all the other support she is on and she feels so much better. We don’t know what causes under active thyroid function but there are many who are subclinical who may benefit from effective thyroid glandulars. These formulas don’t contain hormones, but some of the above nutrients help move the TSH to the optimal range of 1.5 -2.0 mU/L, and the T4 to the optimal range of 14-16 and patients feel much better for it. Dr. Ingrid Pincott, Naturopathic Physician, has been practicing since 1985 and can be reached at www.Dr Pincott and 250-286-3655.

Community school envisions a peace garden Black Press FANNY BAY — Beachcombers Community School, a lovely parentdriven school in Fanny Bay south of Courtenay, has just been shortlisted for a $20,000 outdoor classroom grant. “We are very excited to be one of a handful of schools to be chosen across Canada, and the only school in B.C.,” said principal Wendy Preston. Beachcombers School’s vision is to build a “peace garden” that will include an outdoor garden and science classroom, including a composting centre. They are also hoping to install a stone circle that will function as an outdoor teaching area and place for classroom community meetings. The final grant winner is chosen through online voting. Beachcombers needs
your vote. As a small school with small class sizes and small overall student numbers, the school is at a disadvantage. To win the grant, the school will need community support. “We are up against schools with 10 times our student population,” said Preston. “We need every vote.” Beachcombers School offers a gentle learning environment, Montessori-inspired academics and environmental stewardship, including coastal studies. “We are grateful for all the community support we have received,” said Preston. “We truly are the ‘Little School that Could!’ ” To vote, visit the Beachcombers Community School website at http://www. beachcombersschool. ca/vote.html

A killer whale hunts dolphins off Chatham Point about a month ago, the dolphin pictured escaped with some injuries. He managed to get up onto a rock ledge and escaped.
How long will we have the privilege of seeing killer whales? Mark Evans Special to Midweek There are three distinct types of killer
whales found on the west coast of Canada. These are the resident fish eating types, the transient
mammal eating types and the elusive and rarely studied offshore type. While each type

The types are basically genetically and culturally distinct from one another. The coastal waters of the inside passage do not house the largest population of Orcas but they are home to the most accessible population in the world (the largest populations of orcas are found in the Antarctic). Orcas are not migratory, they have a territory. There are three distinct populations that encompass the waters around Vancouver Island as part of their territory. These are the northern resident fish eating population that number approximately 265 individuals, the southern resident population that number approximately 88 individuals and the West Coast transient population that number approximately 250 individuals It is very important to understand that not only do the different ‘types’ of killer whales not breed with one another, there is no Cont. on Page 10

MidWeek / September 28, 2011 p ,
Transients are the most toxic marine mammal
mating between the different populations of the same type. For example the northern resident killer whales do not breed with the southern resident killer whales let alone with any population group of transients or offshores. This season has seen an unprecedented number of Transient Killer Whales on our doorstep in and around the Discovery Islands. The whale watching companies and their passengers out of Campbell River have been really spoiled this year, daily sightings
were a common occurrence throughout May, June and July. Hot spots for sightings were the waters of the Discovery Passage and around the islands of Middlenatch, Quadra, Cortes, Read, Hernando and the mainland towns of Lund and Powel River. Whilst this is fantastic news for not only the whale watching companies but for recreational boaters, the economy and the City of Campbell River itself, there is a more sobering reality that we should all be aware of. The transient killer whale is the most toxic
marine mammal on the planet. How so? Marine mammals carry distressingly high levels of polychlorinated biphenyls(PCBs – PCBs were used in a variety of adhesives, sealants, paints, hydraulic fluids, coolants and insulating fluids in electric transformers), pesticides (DDT), and brominated flameretardants. These environmental contaminants are a serious concern for marine animals. Many of these human produced chemicals
bioaccumulate, meaning that organisms absorb these chemicals at a rate faster than they are lost. The higher an animal is up the food chain the greater its exposure to these chemicals from their prey – they are biomagnified, as animals higher in the food chain will receive the chemical load from each of their prey. An example of bioaccumulation is found in chinook salmon and northern resident killer whales. The salmon carry a load of the toxins known as PCBs in the range of 20 parts per
billion. The northern resident killer whales that feed on them carry a load of up to 40 parts per million – a level approximately two thousand times higher – by eating 10 to 25 fish a day. Incidentally the southern resident males carry 150 ppm The current Health Canada guideline for PCBs in fish is 2 ppm, whilst the Environmental Protection Agency guideline on PCBs is much stricter. They recommend that fish with PCB levels between 0.024 to 0.048 ppm should be eaten up to a
maximum of 8 oz a month. The transient orca however sits at the very top of the food chain; it is the ultimate apex predator. Their diet consists almost exclusively of marine animals such as Harbour seals, Steller sea lions, Dalls porpoises, Pacific White Sided Dolphin and harbour porpoises. Male transient orcas have been found to have a stunning 251 ppm of PCBs. Even more startling are the loads found in a female transient washed ashore near Dungeness Spit, Washington in 2002. The PCB levels
were about 1,000 ppm. This is the highest level of PCBs ever found in a killer whale and the highest found in any cetacean. Female killer whales carry roughly 1/3 the level of the male, likely as a result of transferring large concentrations of contaminants in milk to their first calf. Transients have in the area of three to 12 times the PCB loads of the highly contaminated beluga population, making the transients the most contaminated animals on the planet British Columbia’s Cont. on Page 11

Whales evoke positive emotions From Page 8 killer whales are now among the most polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contaminated marine mammals in the world. The killer whales of British Columbia probably pick up their burden of contaminants from local sources. But industrial chemicals are contaminating the ocean ecosystem worldwide and are spread on the winds and tides. Some PCBs in these waters have come from as far away as China and Japan Bioaccumulations of chemical toxins are not the only threat to the Orcas and marine mammals of B.C., throw in by-catch entanglement, noise pollution, bottom trawling, habitat degradation, human disturbance and prey depletion – these guys are really well and truly up against it. It is quite possible
in our lifetime if we are not careful then when the seven-yearold boy who came out on a whale watching trip last week with us becomes a grandfather his grandchild could be asking what killer whales were like. We will lose one population of transient orcas in our lifetime. The AT1 population whose critical habitat is Prince William Sound in Alaska was decimated after the little accident called the Exxon Valdez Oil spill. This population now consists of only eight individuals and will eventually die out. Our Southern Resident population is listed as endangered, with only 88 individuals, high level of containments and very few breeding males the issue of health and genetic inbreeding is real Sometimes when we are born and bred in an area and live there most of our
lives we can take for granted what’s on our doorstep. I have seen this in many beautiful but fragile parts of the world that I have been lucky to live in. The resident communities and West Coast transients are a blessing for all of us who live on the coast and share the waters with them, I have guided all over the world and have worked in Africa, South America, Australia and Asia but never ever have I seen anything that evokes such positive emotion in people than when people see Orcas. I have had people break down and cry, thanking me for showing them something they have saved for many years to see. When I ask people why you came to Canada for a holiday, viewing Orcas is in the top three reasons for most people. Whale watching
isn’t simply about showing people where the whales are, it’s an experience, a lifelong memory that will be cherished and talked about, it’s an education. In our ever increasing urbanized world each generation is becoming more disconnected from our environment than the next. Whale watching companies should connect people to the environment, for once you are connected then things become more relevant, and once things are more relevant then people start to care and when people start to care they are much more likely to stand up and do something.

So next time you pick up that chemical with the skull and cross bone on the back, have a rethink, look at using an alternative biodegradable product. Our marine mammals do not have a voice of their own, they cannot vote or change government policies. We have an obligation to share our planet and to make sure we leave something behind for the future whale watchers to enjoy what I am blessed to see with our passengers every day of the summer in the waters off this beautiful land.
