GIRL GUIDES P/U AD

Mark’s the man behind Summerside Express Alistair Taylor Black Press A man whose passion has always been to help children will be getting a little help from the medical system. Mark Lerner has headed up the Summerside Express program for 25 years now, creating recreational opportunities for youths with disabilities. This past summer was typical of the program as the youths aged 7-19 participated in crafts and field trips not just in Campbell River but throughout the region. “It’s always been a passion to help children,” Lerner said. Lerner joined the Summerside program 25 years ago

now it’s offered by the City of Campbell River. Lerner works with the City of Campbell River and School District 72

the television and the electronic games and gets them to “explore what their abilities and capabilities are.” The program helps the youths learn what it means to socialize, how to make relationships and develop friendships. They also get out in to the community and included in the program is community service projects like fundraising car washes. The program encourages the youths to learn what independence is all about. It’s offered at an age period that sees the youths transition from elementary school to middle school. It’s a period that changes the environment for all kids in an significant way. They’re expected to be more independent and they’re in a larger facility with more kids. The Summerside program helps the kids to come out of their shell and Lerner has seen it become a good preparation activity for transition into the teen years. “They’re taking another step in life,” Lerner said. Lerner said he has Cont. on Page 3

25 years at the Express helm From Page 2 seen a lot of youths come and go over the 25 years. Not just the program participants but many of the summer staff are university and college students who plan to go into the social service fields and are getting practical experience. Many of

the staff provide direct assistance to children in the program who need it. The intent is to make city recreational programs accessible to children of all abilities. The 25-year mark is an auspicious one because Lerner will be taking a 4-6 month break this fall to have a hip

installed. Lerner was born without a hip and with what was once called club foot. He has moved around all his life with leg braces and crutches. He has also undergone various medical procedures throughout his life. “This is the fourth time they have been

in there,” Lerner said. “This is a long term disability I have had all my life.” And just as the kids in Summerside adjust

to new conditions, Lerner will be too. His surgery will be taking place in Toronto and the four-month recovery period.

with Don Daniels Campbell River fishing guides are reporting steady catches of springs north of Browns Bay. Ken Paruch, visiting from Sydney, Nova Scotia, was combining river fishing and dry fly fishing on Echo Lake. A number of 14 inch trout were caught using mosquito and caddis flies. I met with a couple of anglers from Hood River, Oregon who were gearing up for pinks on the river. The spin casters are fishing the banks of the Campbell River at the location by the old logging bridge. This can be a very busy spot on weekends. If you are visiting Campbell River, try the Discovery Pier for fun; fishing equipment can be rented. Cindy Hildebrand is a recreation leader for the City of Campbell River and takes the children from the Gathering Place Summer Camp program fishing on the pier. Ben Luck has been teaching the children proper fishing protocol and is willing to help on the pier. Beach fishing will pick up on the Oyster River using lures and flies. Wolf and Maple Lake is producing nice fish using leech and woolly bugger fly patterns. My fishing destination in mid Cindy Hildebrand fishing on the Pier September will be the Upper Campbell and Buttle Lake. Join me this Saturday at Ideal Tackle in Campbell River starting at 10 am for free coffee and doughnuts, I will tie and give out free flies to the customers, and will talk fishing while Ken Hunter has a sale on PFDs and Scotty downriggers, this is a great opportunity to trade in your old downrigger. This is a one day event with no rain checks. Fishing information can be emailed to me at dond@ campbellrivermirror.com. See you on the river!

Hypertension not the silent killer Bill, age 45, came into my office to discuss his recent diagnosis of hypertension (high blood pressure). He had been prescribed Ramipril, an ACE inhibitor, and he wanted to know if I could help him get off the medication. In our recent Pharmacy training we were taught that, in fact, hypertension is not the “silent killer” after all. Certainly, if someone has high blood pressure with symptoms of headaches, nosebleeds, heart palpitation, dizziness and shortness of breath, then they need to be treated. However asymptomatic moderately high blood pressure of 140/90 to 150/90 has proven not to be pathological. The other problem could be that the blood pressure is only high in the doctor’s office or “white coat syndrome.”

Bill’s blood pressure I explained to in the office was Bill about nitric normal at 130/80 down oxide (NO) and the from 150/90 when he significant effects was initially diagnosed. it plays in the role I asked him if he of cardiovascular had worn a Halter disease including monitor to evaluate hypertension. NO his blood pressure is a free radical gas over 24 hours? He said produced in the cells no. I then asked him that line the blood to record vessels, nerve his blood cells and white pressures at blood cells. home first NO relaxes thing in the smooth muscle morning and in the arteries, last thing decreases at night for platelets from Dr. Ingrid a two-week clotting and Pincott period. I told Naturally Healthy regulates fat him that I metabolism. would add Individuals some naturopathic with low levels of recommendations to NO will have signs his current prescription and symptoms of and that we would hypertension, coronary evaluate him to see if artery disease, stroke we could reduce the and atherosclerosis. Ramipril dosage. Bill and I discussed Bill’s MD was NO-friendly nutrients concerned about his and herbs including high cholesterol and folic acid, L-arginine, warned that if it didn’t vitamin B6, and B12, come down he would Folic acid, vitamin recommend a statin E, garlic, resveratrol, drug. Bill definitely quercitin and green wanted to avoid that! tea.

My hypertension program includes the following: ● Lose weight by reducing carbohydrate intake. Bill’s waist was greater than 40 inches, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. ● Exercise to make sure getting 10,000 steps per day, increases NO production and lowers hypertension. ● Fish oils: these are antiinflammatory as well as antithrombotic (anti-clotting) and lower blood pressure, triglycerides and LDL cholesterol. ● Minerals: calcium, magnesium and potassium have all shown efficacy in the management of hypertension. ● Vitamin D is measured to maintain blood levels of 150nmol/l. ● Hawthorne is my favorite herb and is in my herbal blood pressure formulas. ● B complex and folic acid:

LIST OF REGISTERED ELECTORS Beginning Tuesday, October 4, 2011 until the close of general voting for the election on Saturday, November 19, 2011, a copy of the list of registered electors will, upon signature, be available for public inspection at the Village Office, 499 Muchalat Drive, during regular office hours, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, excluding statutory holidays. OBJECTION TO REGISTRATION AS AN ELECTOR An objection to the registration of a person whose name appears on the list of registered electors may be made in accordance with the Local Government Act until 4:00 p.m. on Friday, October 14, 2011. An objection must be in writing and may only be made by a person entitled to be registered as an elector of the Village of Gold River and can only be made on the basis that the person whose name appears has died or is not qualified to be registered as an elector of the Village of Gold River. lower homocysteine an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, as well as improve NO production. ● A Mediterranean diet, high in vegetables, olive oil and fish improves NO levels in the arteries and lowers weight. Bill’s blood pressures were lower when he took them at home but still high enough to stay on the Ramipril at least initially. Over the course of the following si months Bill was able to lose more than 20 pounds and his cholesterol normalized. His blood pressure did come down to 110/70 and he had occasional dizzy spells. His blood pressure was getting too low so he was able to reduce his Ramipril dosage by half. There are some patients who can manage without medication but I kept Bill on the Ramipril because he still had a few risk factors including an elevated homocysteine at 9.0. I added CoQ10 to his regime because not only does Ramipril deplete this nutrient, important for energy protection and performance of the heart muscle, it also lowers blood pressure. Dr. Ingrid Pincott, naturopathic physician, has been practicing since 1985 and can be reached at 250-286-3655.

Bella turns out to be a boy

Mike D’Amour Black Press Bella is really a Bieber. That’s what Port Hardy’s Nancy Wilson discovered when the fawn she rescued – and named Bella – was not a doe. “It turned out it was a little male,” she said. Regardless, the fourmonth-old deer will soon be released back to the wilds. Midweek readers may recall Wilson took in the fawn in June, moments before it

would have been run over by a grader in a forested area near Port Hardy. She tried to release the deer, renamed Bieber in honour of Canada’s Justin Bieber, on Waddington Island, roughly a straight line between Sointula and the Port McNeill airport. “It turned out to be a private island and I got kicked off,” said Wilson. “I took little Bieber back home, but he escaped and walked into (Port Hardy’s)

Mickey Finn’s bar while people were drinking.” The deer then followed a little girl to her home. Wilson was contacted and retrieved the young deer. She was going to release Bieber closer to home, but decided he needed to be around his own kind. “I really screwed him over because he was much too imprinted with humans,” said Wilson, who believed Bieber

needed to be around humans and other deer. “So I got the phone number for a man, Pat Brown, the “deer rehabilitator” in Courtney,” Wilson recalled. “This guy is a

For the fifth consecutive year, 23 grandmothers and grand others will be cycling down Vancouver Island, from Campbell River to Victoria, to raise much-needed funds for the Stephen Lewis Foundation. Four local cyclists, Barb Fudge and Jen Bowlby from the Glacier Grannies, Sally Gellard from the Merville Grand Mothers, and Sylvia Shaw from Hornby Unique Grandmothers and Grand Sisters,

are taking on the challenge, joining the Cycle Tour, and will ride approximately 280 kilometers from Sept. 9 to 11. The cyclists will be welcomed, cheered on and served meals along the way provided by several SLF grandmother groups on Vancouver Island. The Merville Grand Mothers will greet the group at Black Creek Mini Golf for a mid-morning refreshment break at 10:30 on Sept. 9, and then the Denman

Island Grandmothers are hosting a lunch at Simms Millennium Park at noon. The Comox Valley community is invited to meet the team at Simms Park, learn about the work of the Stephen Lewis Foundation and cheer the Cycle Tour on their way. The four previous Cycle Tours have raised a combined total of close to $150,000. All money raised is donated to Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmother to Grandmother Campaign, which funds over 300 grassroots initiatives and community level programs that support African Grandmothers. To make a donation to the Grandmothers for Africa Cycle Tour, go to www. glaciergrannies.org., click on Barb Fudge and then choose the rider you wish to support.

Ever-changing exhibitions at the Royal BC Museum The latest in “always something new” at the Royal BC Museum is the Delta Dynamics and Diversity area, which has evolved from a static walk through into an interactive, colourful and updated learning experience, just completed this week. “We haven’t lost the lifelike diorama with its shore birds and plants,” said RBCM CEO Pauline Rafferty, “but we’ve improved it and completely transformed the surrounding area. Working with a minimal budget and keeping the work inhouse, we’re sharing a renewed story about BC’s deltas and their life forms.” The museum’s continued reputation

for creating world-class displays is partly due to its highly talented design and exhibitions team. They worked with less than $30,000, but used plenty of creativity and their wide variety of skills, from mold-making or scene painting to joinery or computer game design. This in-house capability is becoming a rarity in the museum world, but one that the Royal BC Museum recognizes as being ideal when it comes to sharing the B.C. story. In the new area, binoculars are available along the slightly raised plank boardwalk as part of a game to identify the species on display. Touch screens provide more details and are positioned low enough

for children to explore. A curator talks about bird migration via a listening post next to a map of the Pacific flyway. New interpretive panels are colourful and full of information and images about the variety of habitats found in deltas: from sandy beaches, mud flats and eelgrass meadows to marshes, bogs and woodlands. A life-sized image of a young White Sturgeon lies next to a ruler and its own timeline on the panel entitled “A Long Fish Tale.” This youngster was born in 1935 and survived until 2010 when it had reached a length of 2.5 metres (8 ft) and 13 kg (290 lbs). The peak of the commercial harvest

of White Sturgeon on the Fraser River was in 1897; the harvest only ended in 1994. The renewed exhibition is information-rich. In B.C,. estuaries began forming about 10,000 years ago. They form just a fraction of our rugged coast, less than three per cent, so are some of the rarest ecosystems in our province. There are eight major estuaries – the Nass, Skeena, Delkatla, Comox, Chemainus, Cowichan, Fraser and Nanaimo – along approximately 25,000 km of BC’s coastline. Visitors learn that the Fraser River has the largest estuary on North America’s Pacific Coast. The river drains 25% of our province and its delta

grows seaward at a rate of 3 metres (10 ft) per year. Aerial images show the “plume” of sediment stretching out into the ocean. Drawings show the changing landscapes of 10,000 and 5,000 years ago when much of Richmond, Surrey, White Rock and Delta didn’t exist and Pt. Roberts was an island. Today, more than 700,000 people live in those same areas. Other panels show the areas of the Lower Mainland flooded in 1948, and the extensive dike system built to protect them. The downside of this engineering, from a natural history perspective, is that more than 70 per cent of the Fraser River wetlands have been diked, drained or filled.

Back-to-school: ICBC, police and government join to help keep children safe on our roads As summer vacations wrap up and children return to school next week, ICBC, police and the provincial government are reminding drivers to make smart decisions: plan ahead for more traffic, drive with extra caution and watch for children, especially in or around school zones. Every year in B.C., an average of 16,045 children aged five to 18 are involved in crashes, resulting in 5,215 injuries and 34 deaths.* “We all need to do our part to keep students safe, said Education Minister George Abbott. “School children will be everywhere in the coming days and every driver should step up their awareness and make sure they are paying attention at the wheel. Here are ICBC’s smart driving tips for drivers, parents and students: Tips for parents and students Post these safety tips somewhere in your home and review them with your children — even older children need to be reminded about road safety.

GAS BARBECUES

No. 1: Remove your headphones; put away your phone, MP3 player or other gadgets when crossing a street. Focus your full attention on the road. No. 2: Use designated crossing points and follow pedestrian traffic signs and signals. Make eye contact with drivers, so you both see each other. Teach your child to cross at intersections that have a pedestrian crossing light or a marked crosswalk whenever possible. No. 3: Dress to be seen. Wear brightor light-coloured clothing. In dark or bad weather, wear reflective material on clothes or accessories. No. 4: Always walk on the inside edge of the sidewalk — away from the road.

If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic so you can see oncoming vehicles and drivers can see you. No. 5: Be aware of parked vehicles in parking lots and on the road. Before crossing or walking through a parking lot, stop and look left-right-left around the parked vehicle and avoid taking unnecessary shortcuts through parking lots. Teach children this catchy chorus from “Walk ‘n’ Roll, a song by children’s musician Will Stroet, which is included in ICBC’s K-3 school curriculum: Wear something bright Look left and look right Wait for the light Make sure you’re in the driver’s eyesight
