Message from the President

Tiger Football Fans: Welcome to Fighting Tiger Football. All of us at Campbellsville University are excited about this 103rd year of Christian higher education and the opportunities that await us. We are especially glad that you are here and a part of this very special year. As we opened school, we were informed by U.S.News & World Report that Campbellsville was again in the Top 25 of baccalaureate colleges in the South, and we were ranked No. 4 as “an up-and-coming university in the South!” This recognition is wonderful news for our alumni, students, faculty, staff, coaches and friends. Our new school of education building has just opened and we have future plans to see Campbellsville University move forward on several fronts in the near future. Our commitment to planning is shown through the Board of Trustee’s adoption of our progressive long-range plan, “Vision 2025 Preparing Christian Servant Leaders.” I hope you are excited about how Campbellsville is committed to an outstanding educational program and our long-standing commitment to character and servant leadership development across our student body. This year Campbellsville University is pleased to see the players and coaches adopt the theme, “Leave No Doubt!” While they are referring to the caliber of play on the field, I know that head coach Perry Thomas and his fellow coaches have a commitment to see each player grow in character and in maturity. I get excited as I see these young men grow and graduate to move into successful careers beyond the halls of their alma mater. So, let’s support and cheer on the Fighting Tigers as they pursue excellence on the field, in the classroom and in our community. Most Cordially, Michael V. Carter President

This is Campbellsville University...

Gosser Gymnasium Campbellsville University was founded in 1906 by the Russell Creek Baptist Association as Russell Creek Academy in Campbellsville, Ky. In 1924 the institution became known as Campbellsville Junior College. It made the transition to a four-year college in 1960 and reached university status in 1996, changing the name once again to become Campbellsville University. Now in her second century of service, Campbellsville continues to see unprecedented growth in terms of enrollment, construction of new facilities, renovation of existing facilities and producing successful graduates. With a student body comprised of over 2,600 students from 93 Kentucky counties, 27 U.S. states and 31 foreign countries, Campbellsville University has a very diverse cultural mix on its campus. The University is also noted for a strong faculty with over 70 percent of its professors holding a Ph.D. or the highest degree in their field of study and a low student/faculty ratio of under 12 to 1. Campbellsville offers certificates of study along with associates, bachelor’s degrees in 43 majors and study emphases, as well as 15 masters degrees and four postgraduate areas. The University campus is more than 80 acres and features a total of 44 buildings. In the past 13 years there have been more than 22 major renovations or new construction projects. In the summer of 2008 the Gosser Gymnasium was opened as the new home for Tiger Wrestling and a campaign is ongoing to add synthetic turf to Findley Stadium and lights to both the football and baseball stadiums. CU unveiled its new School of Education building this fall. The university has also expanded to have satellite centers in Louisville and Hodgenville. CU holds dual athletic membership in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) and is also a member of the Mid-South Conference. The university fields 21 teams in 14 sports, and Campbellsville’s coaches are consistently named Coach of the Year in the conference and many are recognized on a national level for their accomplishments, including nine times in 2008-09. Tiger student-athletes not only excel on the courts and fields, but in the classroom. In 2008-09 the program produced 89 All Mid-South Conference Academic Team members and 24 Daktronics/NAIA Scholar Athletes. Listed in U.S.News & World Report’s 2009 “America’s Best Colleges,” CU is ranked 22nd in “Best Baccalaureate Colleges” in the South for the second straight year. It has been ranked 16 consecutive years with U.S.News & World Report. The university has also been named to America’s Best Christian Colleges.

Coaching Staff PERRY THOMAS

HEAD COACH/DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

Perry Thomas enters his second year as head coach and looks to continue to build on the Fighting Tiger tradition and improve on his program’s 3-8 slate in his first season. Thomas spent 16 seasons as a high school coach, and his teams made the state playoffs every year he was a head coach. He has a career 133-64 record after stops at Campbellsville High and Paducah Tilghman. After a volunteer coach at Allen CountyScottsville in 1986, he moved up to assistant coach in 1987. He hasn’t looked back. He became defensive coordinator at Campbellsville High in 1988 and then head coach for eight years where he piled up 63 wins while losing only 33 and eight playoff appearances. During that time, he won two district titles and one region championship,

TIM ROGERS

LINEBACKERS COACH/ RECRUITING COORDINATOR

Like a lot of the Campbellsville coaches, Tim Rogers is beginning his second season as a linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator. Rogers has had a hand in directing nearly 90 new faces to the Tiger roster since the end of last season. Rogers started his collegiate playing career at Eastern Kentucky University and finished at Campbellsville University. In 1997, he was named an All-American at middle linebacker. He was also invited for a workout with the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League in 1996. He returns to CU from Carson-Newman where he was an assistant defensive ends coach and assistant inside linebackers coach from 2004. Prior to that, he was a defensive backs coach at Union College. Rogers was also part of the coaching staff at Boyle County High during the Rebels’ five straight state championships, beginning in 1999. Rogers is single and lives in Campbellsville.

along with one state semi-final appearance. His 63 wins ranks him as the winningest coach in CHS history. Over his last eight seasons as a high school head coach in Paducah, Thomas guided the Blue Tornado to a 70-31 record, including eight playoff appearances, five district titles, two region championships and two state semi-final appearances. Thomas has been named District and/or Region Coach of the Year nine times in his high school coaching career. In 1993 and 1997, he was named Class A Coach of the Year by the (Louisville) Courier-Journal. He has been a coach of the Kentucky team five times in the now defunct match-up between Kentucky and Tennessee. He was head coach of that team in 2006. Thomas was also a national finalist for the American Football Coaches Association “Power of Influence” Award in 2005 and 2006. He received the Joe Russell Distinguished Leadership Award from the Western Kentucky University in 2003 and again in 2006. Bolstered by a recruiting class that numbers nearly 90, to go along with 80 returning players, Campbellsville University football fortunes continue to cast a bright light.

CHRIS PARDUE OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR

RON BARNARD

ASSISTANT HEAD COACH/ OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS COACH

Ron Barnard will be in his second season as assistant head coach while also serving as special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach. Barnard is originally from Sturgis, Ky., and played for Murray State University. He began his coaching career at Murray State in 1992 as a tight ends coach. In a distinguished high school resume, Barnard coached at Mayfield High School in 1993 for the Class 2A Kentucky High School Championship team, and then became the defensive coordinator at Graves County from 1994 to 1997. From there, he worked his way across the state to Mercer County where he was also defensive coordinator, and then returned to Graves County to coach defense from 1999 to 2001. He joined Perry Thomas’ staff at Paducah where he remained as assistant head coach before accepting an offer to follow Thomas to CU. He and his wife, Michelle, have three children: Zach, Alyssa Brooke and Elijah Cole Barnard.

JIM HARDY Chris Pardue is moving into his second season as offensive coordinator and hopes that the influx of new talent will mean that the Fighting Tiger offense will maintain some of the same punch it did in 2008. Pardue’s resume includes three years as head coach of the highly successful Boyle County High School program, and he was the offensive coordinator during Boyle’s unprecedented run at five straight state championships when Chuck Smith was head coach — the same head coach Perry Thomas worked with at Allen County and Campbellsville. Pardue was at Boyle for 16 seasons and also coached for eight years at Allen County-Scottsville. He and his wife, Sherry, have one daughter, Kelly.

RUNNING BACKS COACH/ ELIGIBILITY AND EQUIPMENT COORDINATOR

Jim Hardy has been with the CU football program for seven years, and he’ll be serving as running backs coach and equipment coordinator, in addition to handling eligibility. Hardy was offensive coordinator for Perry Thomas when Thomas was at Campbellsville High. He spent 18 seasons coaching at Campbellsville High as a position coach, offensive coordinator and head coach of the Eagles. He was also athletic director for 17 years and taught history. A lifelong resident of Campbellsville and a graduate of Campbellsville College in 1985, he and his wife, Lorri, have two children: Jackie and Tyler.

JOE STOCKTON

OFFENSIVE LINE COACH/ ASSISTANT RECRUITING COORDINATOR

Joe Stockton hit the ground running when he got to Campbellsville a year ago and will begin his second season this fall. Along with his football duties as offensive line coach and assistant recruiting coordinator, he also has to evaluate track athletes as well - knowing and learning what speed is and what it can be used for. During Stockton’s first season, the O line was part of the football team’s best offensive production in years. Stockton’s unit helped pave the way as the Tigers averaged close to 30 points per game and 433 yards of total offense - which ranked them 12th in the nation. Also during Stockton’s first year, sophomore A.J. Brown earned All MidSouth Conference honors as a left tackle

DAVID PAYNE

DEFENSIVE LINE COACH

When you look for someone who has experience with Campbellsville University football, look no further than David Payne. He’s starting his 11th season, this time with the defensive line. Payne coached Kentucky high school football for 20 years before joining the CU staff.

KENNETH BURRESS DEFENSIVE BACKS COACH/SPEED & STRENGTH COACH

Kenneth Burress will be starting his third season on the Tiger staff, taking over last season as defensive backs coach and speed/strength coach. He came to Campbellsville at the start of the 2007 season after being an assistant coach at Harmony Prep (Ohio) Community School, and has also served on the staffs of Indiana State University and the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League. He is a graduate of Bowling Green (Ohio) University where he played collegiately for four seasons. He resides in Campbellsville with his wife, Kim.

and helped to anchor a young offensive line that aided All-American running back Greg Fountain who became the singleseason record holder in rushing yards. A former All-American at Western Kentucky, Stockton spent two seasons at Susquehanna (PA) University where he coached split ends and was head coach of the junior varsity. Previous high school coaching stints included Central Hardin High before becoming offensive coordinator at North Hardin High. From his WKU playing career, Stockton still holds the NCAA Division I-AA record for all-purpose (467) yards in a game as well the school’s single-game record for receiving (276) yards. He’s a three-time Division I-AA All-American and is the Hilltopper’s career leader in kick return (2,302) and all-purpose (5,280) yards. In 2006, WKU named the most improved receiver award the Joey Stockton Award. It is presented each year at the conclusion of the Annual Red/White Scrimmage. He spent five years at LaRue County and 15 years at Campbellsville. He is a retired high school teacher and former assistant principal at Campbellsville High School. The Glasgow, Ky., native is a 1973 graduate of Western Kentucky University where he was a member of the 1973 team that played for a NCAA Division II national championship under head coach Jimmy Fiex. Payne and his wife, Tammy, have three daughters: Heather Bauer, Kendra Benningfield and Courtney Payne, along with one grandson, Jake Bauer.

KYLE LONG

STUDENT ASSISTANT

Kyle Long’s CU football career was cut short by an automobile accident his sophomore year, so Long traded in his pads for a clipboard. He is now a student assistant for the Fighting Tigers. Long, who played four years at Casey County High, played in three games as a Tiger freshman and eight games as a sophomore before his car accident Long is a senior now and on target to graduate next spring.

RICKY GEHRES

WIDE RECEIVERS COACH

Rick Gehres starts his fourth season at CU as the wide receivers coach. A 2004 Campbellsville University graduate, Gehres is the Tigers all-time leader in pass reception yards (2,467) and is among the leaders in several other receiving categories during his playing days. A Hopkinsville, Ky. native, Gehres was a two-time first team All-Conference selection and in 2002 was an Honorable Mention All-American. He was tabbed a pre-season All-American in 2003. Gehres coached wide receivers at Hopkinsville High in 2005 before returning to Campbellsville as a position coach. After graduation form CU, Gehres played oversees in the German Football League in the spring of 2005 and played Arena Football for the Odessa (Texas) Roughnecks in the spring of 2006.

DALE ESTES

TIGHT ENDS COACH

Dale Estes comes to Campbellsville University after 14 successful years coaching in the Campbellsville Independent School District, at both the middle and high school levels. Estes played for head coach Perry Thomas at Campbellsville, finishing up his high school playing career in 1995. After an undergraduate and master’s degree from Campbellsville University, Estes returned to Campbellsville Independent where he has been a teacher for 10 years. He was a middle school assistant for three years and head coach for five seasons. For the past four years, he has been an assistant at CHS where he was defensive coordinator. He also was a high school assistant in 2000 and 2001. Estes will maintain his teaching position at CHS, where he will continue to instruct in PE and Health. He and his wife, Erin, have a son, Cameron.

2009 Season Outlook

P

erry Thomas isn’t into changing a lot of things, but he did alter his football team’s theme this year from “Restore the Roar” to “Leave No Doubt.” It’s not that Thomas doesn’t want his program roaring in his second season (the program’s 22nd), it’s just that he sees an opportunity to move to a different level. “Last year’s theme was a focus of getting the excitement back — not just with the alumni and the community, but with the players,” Thomas said. And there was some Fighting Tiger growling going on as the Tigers finished 3-8. “Even though our record wasn’t great I thought we competed in just about every game,” Thomas said. “We just need to learn to finish games.” But Thomas thinks the lack of finishing was due, in part, to a lack of experience. “We didn’t know how to finish. It’s one of those things where you have to be there and experience it before it can become a habit.” So, thus has been the work of a coaching staff to teach how to finish and recruit players who already know how. Thomas will miss his All-American running back, Greg Fountain, who led the nation in rushing last season. Fountain was a “sleeper” — a player who wasn’t heavily recruited, but who developed over his career. With that lesson firmly etched in his mind, Thomas has sent his staff on a hunting expedition for the next Fountain. “Players like that are hard to find,” he said. Thomas takes the philosophy that he and his staff are going to recruit all the players they can. “We want every able body we can get, because you never know who’s going to be the next Greg Fountain,” Thomas said. “We’re going to go get

the best of the best, no matter where they are.” The coach, who has only been in the college coaching ranks for two years, knows what he’s got to sell. “We’ll tell players that they can find a great home here and get a great education.” Pre-season rankings aren’t of much interest to Thomas even though he admits they can sometimes be used for motivation. The ranking motivation this season, according to Thomas, will be the fact that it appears that six of his opponents will be ranked in the Top 20, and Carson-Newman will be ranked in the Top 10 of NCAA Division II schools. Four Mid-South Conference teams made the playoffs last season, and it’s likely that an equal number may do the same in 2009, according to Thomas. He hopes the Tigers are one of them. Campbellsville dropped Ohio Dominican, a highly-ranked NAIA team, and picked up Carson-Newman.

Thomas likens it to jumping from the frying pan into the fire. But Thomas relishes the challenge. He also sees monumental benefits in recruiting from playing someone of Carson-Newman’s ability in the hotbed of football territory — eastern Tennessee. In a new twist to this year’s schedule ...there will be one Thursday game under the lights and on TV — Shorter College on Oct. 1, which will be broadcast by Wazoo Sports. “Our hope is that this year we can compete for a spot in the playoffs, and we’ll have to compete to get there,” Thomas said. “Our only drawback now is youth — we’re playing most of the kids we’ve recruited.” With another stellar year of recruiting under the program’s belt, there may be a player or two who can really make a difference. Being a defensive specialist, Thomas has taken it as a challenge to improve that part of the Tigers’ game. To that end he looks for Sherman Williams, Henri Baynham-Baker, Trey Mayes and Calvin Bini to shoulder a lot

of the load after a year of play under their shoulder pads. Williams (SR/6’1/302), who was injured most of last season, is from Louisville. Baynham-Baker (SOPH/5’9/270) is from Elizabethtown, Ky. Mayes and Bini will be juniors — Mayes a linebacker (6’2/200) is from Cleveland, Tenn., and Bini (JR/5’10/160) from Radcliff, Ky., a redshirt transfer who plays in the secondary, are also

backgrounds and community upbringing, and have them buy in to the same winning mindset.” Thomas believes that he and his staff will get great effort, but he and his staff need to continue to teach fundamentals and knowledge of the game. That’s one thing that has been a surprise to him. “Speed is huge in the college game, but I’ve been surprised that we’re

“We’re going to go get the best of the best, no matter where they are!” ~ perry thomas expect to lead an improved D. “Those players have to be an impact for us to be successful, and they have to make everyone else around them better through their leadership and play.” On offense Thomas is looking to Cincinnati native receiver Stan Warrenhuffman (SOPH/6’3/190), and Pelham, Ala. lineman A.J. Brown (JR/6’2/275) to step up and continue

Thomas said they want to recruit people who have tasted success. “We’ve had to adjust to losing a little bit. We’ve had to go back in our mindset because of that.” Thomas said football is easy and discipline is easy compared to losing. And he also knows that a cure for that is to win some games early. “The key is to get these guys from all over the country, with different

having to reteach techniques and fundamentals.” Leave no doubt about it, though, Thomas is still all about restoring the roar. It may take some time, but improvement will be measured in how the Tigers compete. “We don’t have to win all our games, but we do need to show some improvement.”
