SEASON OUTLOOK
The Tigers celebrate their first postseason victory in more than a decade during the 2011 Victory Bowl. Campbellsville will look to build on the success this fall.
C
ampbellsville University looks to pick up right where it left off in 2011. After injuries forced the use of the Fighting Tigers’ fourth- and fifth-string quarterbacks early in the year, the Tigers hit a rough patch, dropping four straight games in October. However, Campbellsville evened its season at .500 and rose to the challenge on the third Saturday of November to claim its first-ever postseason championship. In 2012, CU looks to climb to the next level with “Rise Above” as its rally call. For three straight years, the Tigers have strung together winning seasons, but have been just out of reach of the NAIA playoffs. Despite being picked third in the Mid-South West Division preseason poll, CU is ranked No. 25 in the NAIA preseason – a good starting position as it returns to the MSC West for the first time since 2009.
DEFENSE Defense continues to be the mainstay for CU with head coach Perry Thomas
returning for his fifth year as the defensive play caller. While, CU lost some senior leadership across the field defensively, a few bright spots showed late last season at linebacker and in the secondary that are expected to grow this year.
DEFENSIVE LINE The defensive front may have been one of the biggest question marks for the Tigers as they entered fall camp in mid August. After losing seniors Henri Baynham-Baker, Jermaine Dumas and William Harris from the front, CU will look to returners Roger Williamson and Tae Green for a little experience at the position. A host of redshirt sophomores and fresh faces will compete for playing time to fill the twodeep on the line.
LINEBACKERS Last season, linebackers Dwight Houston and Blake Young finished one-two in tackles for the Tigers. With Houston now on the sidelines as a student
assistant coach, Young will look to fill the gap left by the all-time sacks leader for a CU linebacker. Joining Young will be game-experienced linebackers Brandon Hillary, Nick Reed, Winston Harbison and McKale High. The Tigers also have a strong transfer who is coming off a good spring at linebacker, Brendan Walker.
SECONDARY CU will return all five starters in the secondary from last year’s Victory Bowl team: Brandon Brown, Ricco Dickerson, Earl McCann, Darius Skinner and TayVaugn Wynn. Jeffrey Demary is the Tigers’ biggest loss at the position from last season after finishing the year third in tackles. McCann, Skinner and Dickerson each followed Demary’s lead, combining for 178 tackles, eight interceptions and four forced fumbles.
OFFENSE Campbellsville fans can expect a similar, yet new, look this season from first-year offensive coordinator Rick Gehres. The CampbellsvilleTigers.com | @CvilleTigers
33
SEASON OUTLOOK former Tiger wide receiver standout is expected to present an exciting offense to watch, and he gets to do so with an entirely new offensive coaching staff.
OFFENSIVE LINE Only two starters from 2011 return on the offensive line, including preseason NCCAA All-American Caleb Croney on the right side. The other is starting center Chris Brown. Josh Monin, a part-time back up at left tackle, also returns this year for the Tigers. While those three will look to earn their starting spots from Brandon McCray, CU’s new offensive line coach, there will be plenty of fresh faces competing to win McCray’s hog award at the end of the season.
QUARTERBACKS The race is on to determine Campbellsville University’s starting quarterback in 2012. All three of CU’s returning quarterbacks have started a game in the Mid-South Conference. Will Warf is the Tiger with the most recent action, splitting time as the starter in most of the Tigers’ games last year. Robert Hill will look to win the
starting job for his senior season after a year away from the game. Hill helped lead CU to its first Victory Bowl as the Tigers’ starter in 2010. He began the season under center in 2009 as a redshirt freshman, but lost the spot after an injury in week two. Similar to Hill’s freshman year, Cameron Looper was sidelined in his first start in the 2011 season opener and never returned due to a nagging injury. While those three bring experience into fall camp, they will be challenged by junior college transfer Bryan Parnes and a handful of freshman looking to win the job of playing each Saturday for former NFL quarterback Hunter Cantwell, CU’s new QBs coach.
RUNNING BACKS In three of the last four seasons, CU has had a running back rush for 1,000 yards in a season. Each of those years was that Tiger’s last. CU will start with a clean slate in the backfield with only one back having any in-game experience in the MSC – junior Seth McFerrin. Competing for the spot against McFerrin will be the leader through a good chunk of the spring, George Nwokoji. Just like a number of spots on this year’s roster, running back could also see a freshman come in and steal the show.
WIDE RECEIVERS
Demetric Ray

2012 CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL GUIDE
Three of the Tigers’ top five receivers will not be back this season, but that doesn’t mean CU will be weak down field. Demetric Ray, who averaged 25 yards per catch in four games last year, will return for his senior season, while sophomore Demytreus Gipson is also back after scoring five touchdowns and averaging 15 yards per catch in 2012. Adam Robertson is expected to see more action this year after sprinkling in time during 10 games last
Darius Skinner
season. The tight end position will most likely remain with Blake Fields or Joe Blackstone.
SPECIAL TEAMS Darius Skinner stole the return game position last season and never let up, racking up 470 yards on kickoff returns and 239 on punt returns. CU’s kicking game is also up for grabs early after the departure of steady senior David Hon on place-kicking and the one-year wonder Carl Ojala on punts and kickoffs. Both Ojala and Hon etched their names in the CU record book in numerous categories. A first-year Tiger kicker also has his name in the CU record book, but for men’s soccer. Casey Clarke, who concluded his career as one of CU’s all-time assists leaders, is expected to kickoff for the Tigers. He will join the other first-year Tigers to compete for the jobs of punting and place-kicking.

2011 REVIEW
ictory at last! After a decade of falling short of NAIA postseason play, Campbellsville University claimed a postseason title on Nov. 19, 2011 - a 21-7 defensive shutdown of Greenville College in the National Christian College Athletic Association Victory Bowl. The win was the first postseason victory for CU since the NAIA opening round in 2001. Despite a struggle midseason, the Fighting Tigers closed their year on a four-game roll, posting its third straight winning season for the first time since the mid 1990s. The season opened with a first for the Tiger program. For the first time in CU’s 24-year history, the team opened with back-to-back wins home victories - a 31-14 win over Union College and 30-27 over Cumberland University. Campbellsville used strong defense in its first two wins, collecting four sacks and four interceptions against Union and blocking two field goals and an extra point attempt against Cumberland. Senior wide receiver Stan Warrenhuffman posted a record-setting, three touchdown performance in week two, helping CU climb to No. 17 in the NAIA polls. The first of five Tiger losses came Sept. 17 at Division III power, Wisconsin-Whitewater, 54-14. The Warhawks scored 23 unanswered first quarter points, while the Tigers played the game with their fifth-string quarterback, due to injuries. CU returned to the win column in week four with a 56-25 win at rival Lindsey Wilson. Junior quarterback Will Warf threw for a career-high 379 yards in his first start of the season. Not to be outdone, Wayne Coffee tallied 205 yards on the ground, including a 75-yard scamper to seal the victory. The Tigers also returned two interceptions for touchdowns, one by way of senior linebacker Dwight Houston. The touchdown was Houston’s second defensive score in his career and first of two pick-six plays this season. His second came Nov. 12 against West Virginia Tech in the Tigers’ regular season finale victory, 32-23. Following the 3-1 start, Campbellsville struggled with nine turnovers in a 37-30 loss to the University of Pikeville. That sparked a four-game losing streak midseason, taking away CU’s hopes of a Mid-South Conference Championship and the NAIA playoffs. CU didn’t give up on the season though. The Tigers bounced back Oct. 29 at Kentucky Christian University. Trailing 21-7 with one minute left, CU forced and recovered two fumbles, setting up an 8-yard touchdown run by Coffee and then a game-winning 32-yard field goal for David Hon. 36
2012 CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL GUIDE
Wayne Coffee became the third Tiger to rush for more than 1,000 yards in the past four seasons and set a single-season record for most carries (288).
Upon returning home for the 10th game of the season, Campbellsville put on a show, earning its largest win in a decade. The Tigers scored 35 unanswered points to defeat the University of Viginia’s College at Wise, 42-6. Coffee passed 1,000-yards rushing for his career and went on to finish the season third on the Tigers’ all-time rushing list. The following week, word came in that the Tigers would host the 2011 NCCAA Victory Bowl. Greenville College entered the game as one of the top offenses in NCAA Division III. The Tigers shutdown the option threat, holding the Panthers to 164 yards of total offense. Greenville’s only touchdown came on a fourth-quarter kickoff return. But by that time, the Tigers had put the game out of reach with a safety by Ricco Dickerson. CU started the game with some trickery, completing a wide out pass from Bobby Leonard to Diaz Bolden for a 56-yard score. In the second quarter, Dickerson returned a fumble 82 yards for a touchdown to give CU a 14-0 lead. Coffee and Dickerson were named the Victory Bowl Offensive and Defensive Players of the Game Four Tigers set CU career records in 2011. Quarterback Nathan Cooper finished the year with the career records for most completions (308), pass attempts (567), and passing yardage (3,737). Warrenhuffman is now the record holder in career yardage (2,390), career touchdown receptions (19), and receptions per game (4.05). He also set the record for most touchdown catches in a game (3). Houston set the record for sacks by a linebacker (21), and he is the first Tiger to score two defensive touchdowns in a season. CU punter Carl Ojala set a single-season record for most punt yards (2,776) en route to the career record for average yards per punt (40.23).

HISTORY
S
ince 1987, football at Campbellsville University has had one common goal – a commitment to excellence. The Tiger football program was dormant for 50 years until athletic director Don Bishop, the Athletic Boosters’ Club and athletic committee worked to restore the program in 1987. With the approval of then president Dr. W.R. Davenport, former Russell County High School coach Ron Finley was hired to lead the program’s rebirth. The first four-year varsity program began in 1988 with no scholarships, one full-time assistant coach, five part-time assistants and only a half-time trainer. At the time, few people realized how successful the football program would become, with more than 100 football players enrolling each fall – an increased enrollment that helped offset the original expenses involved in setting up the program. Davenport went on to say that the addition of the program “changed the course of the institution.” Campbellsville hosted Centre College for its first game Sept. 10, 1988 at what is now known as Finley Stadium. While the ’88 season ended with a 0-11 record, the Tigers captured their first victory on Sept. 9, 1989 with a 20-16 win over the University of Evansville. Campbellsville scored with 21 seconds remaining to pull off the historic win in front of a home crowd. The following year was Finley’s first winning season with the Tigers (8-2) earning the program’s first national ranking and Finley a Coach of the Year honor. The ’90s became the Tigers’ best decade, as they rose to a No. 2 national ranking in the sixth week of the 1991 season. The Tigers maintained a Top

10 ranking until their undefeated run ended at Lambuth University, 35-31, in week nine. The Tigers narrowly missed the postseason after falling at Georgetown College to end the year. However, the 1992 season ended on a different note. Campbellsville knocked off Georgetown for the first time in program history, 29-27, at home on Nov. 14. The win clinched the Tigers’ first Mid-South Football Conference Championship in a three-way tie for first with Georgetown and Union College. Campbellsville topped Georgetown again in 1996 and 1997, leading to an outright Mid-South championship and the program’s first NAIA playoff appearance in 1997. The decade closed with a Tiger assistant being named the American Football League Assistant Coach of the Year for three consecutive years - tied for the most of any school in all of college football. Campbellsville returned to the postseason in 2000, playing Baker University in the KWTO Bowl. The

following year, CU posted its best record in school history (10-3) and advanced to the NAIA Final Eight against Georgetown. Finley ended his college coaching career in 2002 with a 77-81-1 record. After the growing pain years of 1988 and 1989, Finley’s Tigers posted a 75-63 record and were 43-32 in his last seven seasons. Mark Peach served as head coach for two seasons before being replaced in 2005 by former Campbellsville athletic director and Carson-Newman College assistant Jim Deaton. Perry Thomas was hired in 2008 with the mission of restoring the Tiger football program. He returned the Tigers to the postseason in 2010 and 2011 with trips to the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Victory Bowl. The Tigers defeated Greenville College (Ill.) to win the 2011 Victory Bowl title.
This commemorative print of the 1987 junior varsity season hangs in the President’s Box and Press Box at Finley Stadium in recognition of the rebirth of the program. CampbellsvilleTigers.com | @CvilleTigers
