CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY Find your Calling ...

Campbellsville University was founded in 1906 by the Russell Creek Baptist Association as Russell Creek Academy in Campbellsville, Ky. In 1924 the institution became known as Campbellsville Junior College. It made the transition to a four-year college in 1960 and reached university status in 1996, changing the name once again to become Campbellsville University. Now in her 107th year of service, Campbellsville continues to see unprecedented growth in terms of enrollment, construction of new facilities, renovation of existing facilities and producing successful graduates. Nestled between the Cumberland Plateau and the Appalachian Mountains, Taylor County and Campbellsville, Ky., serve as home to Campbellsville University. Taylor County, population 25,000, is located in the geographical center of Kentucky, only 85-90 miles away from Bowling Green, Lexington and Louisville. The university family gives back to the community through service and time but also provides a more than $101 million economic impact to the area. In 2013, CU is ranked 69th on the U.S. News & World Report’s list of top regional universities in the South. It is also listed among America’s Best Christian Colleges, rated as a Military Friendly School and has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. With a student body comprising more than 3,600 students from 97 Kentucky counties, 30 U.S. states and 37 foreign countries, Campbellsville University has a diverse cultural mix on her campus. The university is also noted for a strong faculty with over 70 percent of its professors holding a Ph.D. or the highest degree in their field of study and a low student/faculty ratio of 13 to 1. Campbellsville offers certificates of study along with associates, bachelor’s degrees in 63 undergraduate options, as well as 17 master’s degrees, five postgraduate areas and eight pre-professional areas. The 101-acre university campus features a total of 45 buildings. In the past 17 years there have been more than 25 major renovations or new construction projects. The university also features satellite centers in Louisville and Somerset as well as developing a strong online presence. CU holds dual athletic membership in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) and is a member of the MidSouth Conference. In addition to these organizations, CU sports teams also compete in the Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association, United States Bowling Congress and National Cheer Association. With more than 700 student-athletes, CU fields 25 teams in 15 sports, and Campbellsville’s studentathletes and coaches are consistently being recognized for their success in the MSC and on the national level. CU is an NAIA Five Star Champion of Character Institution and instills the traits of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership in her daily activities, as well as recently created a student-athlete Bible study and the Tiger Leadership Academy to help mold and mentor team leaders. 2

TRADITION CHEERLEADERS

Campbellsville University Tiger Cheerleaders have a winning tradition in competitive cheerleading. CU has claimed fi ve Mid-South Conference titles, including four of the last six and claimed the MSC’s fi rst-ever championship in 1998. In the 1990s, CU cheerleading was among the best in the nation, winning the COA Collegiate Championship in 1995 and the National Christian College Cheerleading Championship in 1996. CU cheerleading has placed in the Top 6 at the NCA NAIA Invitational in Daytona Beach, Fla., the last two seasons.

TRAIN HORN

The railroad hasn’t moved through Campbellsville since the mid-1980s, but it’s not uncommon to hear the horn of a train on Saturdays in the fall. Located at the southwestern corner of the stadium inside the Greg Vaughn Pavilion for the Dave Fryrear 12th Man Club, the whistle is blown when the Tigers take the fi eld and each time they score.

MARCHING BAND

Tiger Marching Band celebrates its 20th year this fall. Founded in 1992 by Dr. David McCullough, the 90-member band performs at Campbellsville home football games and exhibitions throughout the Commonwealth each fall. Part of the band’s tradition is performing “My Old Kentucky Home” before each home game.

CLAWZ

Clawz became the new name of Campbellsville University’s mascot in 2001. Each football game, Clawz can be found roaming the sidelines and grandstand of Finley Stadium when he is not counting the Tigers’ points with pushups. CampbellsvilleTigers.com | @CvilleTigers

FOOTBALL FACILITIES Finley Stadium & Citizens Bank Field

Finley Stadium and Citizens Bank Field are home to Fighting Tiger Football. Built in 1987, the field has been home for the Tigers since the program’s rebirth. In 2006, the stadium was named in honor of former head coach Ron Finley and the stadium and field were renovated in 2007. The grass surface was removed in 2010 as synthetic turf and lights were added. The field was named for Citizens Bank & Trust Company in 2012 after the bank provided the lead gift in the “More Than A Game” fundraising campaign for lights and turf. The Greg Vaughn Pavilion (Right) is located in the southwest corner of the stadium. Dedicated in 2011, the pavilion, originally know as the Dave Fryrear 12th Man Club Pavilion, serves as host to hundreds of Fighting Tiger football recruits each season. It also houses the train horn, which has sounded after each Tiger touchdown through the years.

HEAD COACH PERRY THOMAS

P

(Western Kentucky University ’86) Head Football Coach, Campbellsville University 27-30 (.522) - Sixth Year

erry Thomas enters his sixth season as head coach of the Fighting Tiger football program.

Thomas inherited a program in 2008 that went 0-10 the previous year. After posting a 3-8 record his first season and finishing runner-up in the Mid-South Conference East Division in 2009 at 7-4, Thomas’ program was named the No. 20 most improved program in all levels of college football and the No. 6 most improved in the NAIA. The past two seasons, Thomas’ Fighting Tigers have finished 7-5 for the first back-to-back-to-back winning seasons since the early 1990s. He led CU to the postseason for the first time since 2001 with trips to the NCCAA Victory Bowl in 2010 and 2011, winning it all in 2011. During the 2009 season, Thomas put Campbellsville’s defense among the nation’s best in third down situations and inside the Red Zone, as the Tigers posted their first winning season since 2004 and best finish since 2003, at 7-4. He led the Tigers to their first win over rival Georgetown College since 1997, with a 28-21 victory at home and also knocked off a Top 10 team in Shorter College, 42-28, in the CollegeFanz/NAIA National Game of the Week. During the season, the Tigers returned to the NAIA National Rankings for the first time in five seasons, ranking as high as No. 24 and finishing the year at No. 28. As a first-year college head coach in 2008, Thomas coached the NAIA’s leading rusher, Greg Fountain, who was his first NAIA All-American and later signed a pro contract in Europe. Calvin Bini became Thomas’ second NAIA All-

American in 2010 and also went on to play pro ball with the Indoor Football League. Over the past three seasons, CU has had two NAIA AllAmericans, 20 All-Mid-South Conference selections, 18 All-Conference Honorable Mentions and 36 Academic All-Conference selections. Thomas’ team also had the 2009 Mid-South Conference Champion of Character Award given to one of his players, Calvin Bini. In 2010, the program was awarded the NAIA Champion of Character Team Award. Before coming to Campbellsville, Thomas posted a successful, 16-year career as a high school coach in Kentucky, leading his team to the Kentucky State High School Football Playoffs each year he was a head coach. His 16-year record as a high school head coach is 133-64. He served as head coach at Campbellsville High School (1992-99) and Paducah Tilghman High School (2000-07). SEASON OUTLOOK

Blake Young leads the Fighting Tigers onto Citizens Bank Field prior to a 2012 game in Finley Stadium.

C

ampbellsville University looks to regroup in 2013 after a 3-8 mark last season. The Fighting Tigers began the year by bringing a crop of transfers during winter break, including talent at every position. The Fighting Tigers’ schedule mixes in two off weeks during the season to help the team rest up for Mid-South Conference West Division play. The first break is Sept. 14, with another coming Oct. 19.

DEFENSE While the defense has been a veteran group for most of Perry Thomas’ tenure as head coach and defensive coordinator, this year a number of returning players will shift into new positions in the defensive lineup. Coach Thomas begins the season as defensive coordinator with thoughts of switching the defensive play calling to secondary coach Josh Dye. The Tigers will continue to run a 3-5 or 3-4 formation with use of monster and saber positions 24

2013 CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL GUIDE

in the secondary.

DEFENSIVE LINE Campbellsville returns two starters and three every-game players to the defensive line two-deep this season. Sophomores Dekwain Tarrance and Randall Dunlap return as starters on the defensive front, while transfer Sedric Watson joins them as a defensive end. Derk Mincy and Shane Williamson also return and will see time at defensive end. Other newcomers expected to work their way into the two-deep are freshman Hunter Napora and junior Anthony Douglas, who returned to the program in the spring after a year off.

LINEBACKERS Former CU linebacker Dwight Houston takes over the coach duties at his old position this fall, and will have AllCommonwealth middle linebacker Nick Reed returning to anchor his unit. Beau Biller will also see time in a starting roll after getting a few starts last season. CU’s other linebackers are new faces

to the program or the position. Daniel DeLeon, Adam Robertson, Stephon Tanga and AJ Strong have all changed positions to slide into linebacker roles, while transfer Travon Montgomery has come in and won a top-two position.

SECONDARY With the use of cornerbacks, monsters and sabers, CU works five to six players into its secondary. Percy Minor and Blake Young are slated to start at monstor with Lezedric Hill and Darion Lewis seeing time as back-ups. Stetson Pendergrass returns as a saber for CU and is joined by transfer Steven Delgado. Newcomers Davian Evans-Dufrene, Shaunski Lawrence, Tyree Wilson, Rashaud Hill and Felix Wyley will all compete for the starting corner positions.

OFFENSE Rick Gehres returns as offensive coordinator for the second season and will have strong running backs, talented receivers and a handful of quarterbacks

SEASON OUTLOOK to work with. Fans will see the use of some option offense mixed into the Tigers’ one-back spread design. But the talent also allows for a power run game.

OFFENSIVE LINE The hogs upfront are among the best front line Coach Thomas’ Tigers have seen in a while. All-Conference performers Caleb Croney and Alex Zimmerman return to the starting lineup at right and left guard after a year away from the game. At the tackle positions, Utah State transfer Andrew Vaughn will provide strength, while Cole Burke, Nick Stamford, Blake Cordell and Caleb Myers will also see time played. DJ Handlon will be the starting center, backed up by Jimmy Camper.

QUARTERBACKS After a summer of workouts with QB coach Hunter Cantwell, senior Bryan Parnes enters the 2013 season as the front runner to lead the Campbellsville offense. The dual-threat quarterback will have more opportunites to run the ball, as will his back up Tajh Milliken, who performed well in the 2013 Spring Game back in April.

Milliken, who was named MVP of the 2011 Class 3A Championship game for Louisville Central High School, is expected to see time under center through the season. Grayshirt feshman Hunter Brown is expected to compete with redshirt freshman Eli Mitchell for the third string role and top JV spot.

RUNNING BACKS A pair of transfers will carry the load for Campbellsville in the backfield this season. Former University of South Carolina signee and Western Kentucky University transfer Ben Axon will share the backfield with former Ole Miss signee and Dodge City Community College transfer Larry Walls. Both attracted NFL scout attention during the spring and bring speed to the position, along with size for Axon. They will be joined by returning senior Seth McFerrin, who saw numerous touches in 2012.

WIDE RECEIVERS Leading Campbellsville’s receiving corp is returning All-Conference slot receiver Jarrod Harrington. Harrington, who became Parnes’ primary target late in the season, will start at the slot position, backed up by Marcus Woodard, who may also see time as a wideout. Junior Demytreus Gipson will also return as a starter at the Z position, while transfers Travon Chatman and Neil Wilson will lead the way at the Y and X receiver spots, respectively. Also competing for time at receiver will be Jacob Lamb, Deanfernee Davis, Nathan Case, Cole Chrisman and Jeremy Hamilton, among others. Seniors Steph’Von Haynes and Joe Blackstone will play tight end for the Tigers. CU’s 2013 receivers are coached by first-year asisstant and former Fighting Tiger Matt Atwood, who played in 2006 and 2007.

Jarrod Harrington

SPECIAL TEAMS For the second-straight year, CU football will convert a four-year European soccer player into a place kicker. Pontus Yngve, a 2013 graduate from Sweden, will handle kickoffs and will compete for the opportunity to kick field goals and extra points. Also looking to win the job on field goals and extra points is wide receiver Will Ward of Texas, who will enter the season opener as the front runner. Punting duties will remain with sophomore Erik Krivitsky, who placed is name in some of the Tigers’ record books as a freshman in 2012. Blake Young will back up Krivitsky and also work some as long snapper and sometimes holder. Bryan Parnes and Trevon Chatman will also serve as holder on field goals and extra points. Jarrod Harrington, Larry Walls, Ben Axon and Trevon Chatman will also share duties as kick returners for the Tigers. CampbellsvilleTigers.com | @CvilleTigers

2012 REVIEW

Earl McCann holds the Battle of Highway 55 trophy as the Fighting Tigers celebrate their Homecoming win over Lindsey Wilson on national television.

A

play here or there was the difference in many Fighting Tiger games in 2012 as Campbellsville University battled its way through a 3-8 season. With a group of new faces at many starting positions, the year provided growing opportunities for the CU freshmen as the Tigers worked to overcome preseason injuries.

Now 0-4 at home, the Tigers were hoping to put on a show for Homecoming. With the game televised nationally on FOX College Sports, Campbellsville maintained its control in the Battle of Highway 55, fending off rival Lindsey Wilson College in a 28-23 win. The entertaining game ended with an Earl McCann interception at the CU 5 to preserve the win.

The Fighting Tigers fell short in their first three games of the season at home before traveling to Jackson, Tenn., to take on Belhaven University on the fourth Saturday in September. The game began as a shootout with junior college transfer quarterback Bryan Parnes slinging his way into the record book with an 86-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Demytreus Gipson. The play broke an 11-year record for the longest pass play in Campbellsville football history. The deep ball tied the game, 14-14, in the second quarter but Belhaven responded with 56 unanswered points to break the game wide open in a 70-28 loss.

The Tigers dropped their next three (Cumberland University, 28-23; University of the Cumberlands, 62-19; Faulkner University, 31-24) before closing the regular season with win at Bluefield College, 23-14. It was the fifth-straight year the Fighting Tigers closed their regular season with a victory. The win included a record-long 55-yard field goal by Clarke.

CU’s road schedule continued the following week in Grayson, Ky., at Kentucky Christian University. This day belonged to soccer player turned place kicker, Casey Clarke. The senior from England rewrote the Tigers’ single-game record book for field goals, hitting 5-of-6 in a 15-14 win. The performance, which included a record-tying 52-yard FG, earned him Special Teams Player of the Week honors from the Mid-South Conference and NAIA. CU’s lead held after Blake Young blocked a field goal try that could have given KCU the lead late. Young also received MSC honors that week as Defensive Player of the Week for his 12 tackles. Sitting at 1-4 on the season, the Tigers were gaining confidence but ran into a tough Georgetown College team in Week 6, losing 42-17 at home. 28

2013 CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL GUIDE

By season’s end numerous Campbellsville records were broken. In addition to Clarke’s field goal records and the 86-yard pass at Belhaven, CU set a single-game record for most kickoff return yards with 186 by Darius Skinner against Georgetown. Most of CU’s records came on special teams. Freshman punter Erik Krivitsky set single-season marks with 72 punts and 2,843 yards, putting him on pace for the CU career mark in both categories by the end of his junior season. Young blocked four kicks during his redshirt sophomore campaign, setting the single-season record and also giving him the career record with six blocks in two years. Following the season, Skinner and Young were named to the All-Mid-South Conference First Team, along with freshman slot receiver Jarrod Harrington. Young was later named an All-NCCAA First Team honoree, while Harrington and Skinner were Second Team selections. Junior linebacker Nick Reed also received honors as honorable ntion in the MSC and NCCAA. He and Young were later named to Kentucky’s All-Commonwealth Team for 2012.

HISTORY

S

ince 1987, football at Campbellsville University has had one common goal – a commitment to excellence. The Tiger football program was dormant for 50 years until athletic director Don Bishop, the Athletic Boosters’ Club and athletic committee worked to restore the program in 1987. With the approval of then president Dr. W.R. Davenport, former Russell County High School coach Ron Finley was hired to lead the program’s rebirth. The first four-year varsity program began in 1988 with no scholarships, one full-time assistant coach, five part-time assistants and only a half-time trainer. At the time, few people realized how successful the football program would become, with more than 100 football players enrolling each fall – an increased enrollment that helped offset the original expenses involved in setting up the program. Davenport went on to say that the addition of the program “changed the course of the institution.” Campbellsville hosted Centre College for its first game Sept. 10, 1988 at what is now known as Finley Stadium. While the ’88 season ended with a 0-11 record, the Tigers captured their first victory on Sept. 9, 1989 with a 20-16 win over the University of Evansville. Campbellsville scored with 21 seconds remaining to pull off the historic win in front of a home crowd. The following year was Finley’s first winning season with the Tigers (8-2) earning the program’s first national ranking and Finley a Coach of the Year honor. The ’90s became the Tigers’ best decade, as they rose to a No. 2 national ranking in the sixth week of the 1991 season. The Tigers maintained a Top

10 ranking until their undefeated run ended at Lambuth University, 35-31, in week nine. The Tigers narrowly missed the postseason after falling at Georgetown College to end the year. However, the 1992 season ended on a different note. Campbellsville knocked off Georgetown for the first time in program history, 29-27, at home on Nov. 14. The win clinched the Tigers’ first Mid-South Football Conference Championship in a three-way tie for first with Georgetown and Union College. Campbellsville topped Georgetown again in 1996 and 1997, leading to an outright Mid-South championship and the program’s first NAIA playoff appearance in 1997. The decade closed with a Tiger assistant being named the American Football League Assistant Coach of the Year for three consecutive years - tied for the most of any school in all of college football. Campbellsville returned to the postseason in 2000, playing Baker University in the KWTO Bowl. The

following year, CU posted its best record in school history (10-3) and advanced to the NAIA Final Eight against Georgetown. Finley ended his college coaching career in 2002 with a 77-81-1 record. After the growing pain years of 1988 and 1989, Finley’s Tigers posted a 75-63 record and were 43-32 in his last seven seasons. Mark Peach served as head coach for two seasons before being replaced in 2005 by former Campbellsville athletic director and Carson-Newman College assistant Jim Deaton. Perry Thomas was hired in 2008 with the mission of restoring the Tiger football program. He returned the Tigers to the postseason in 2010 and 2011 with trips to the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Victory Bowl. The Tigers defeated Greenville College (Ill.) to win the 2011 Victory Bowl title.

This commemorative print of the 1987 junior varsity season hangs in the President’s Box and Press Box at Finley Stadium in recognition of the rebirth of the program. CampbellsvilleTigers.com | @CvilleTigers
