WHY IS GOLD VALUABLE? Who decided that gold should be regarded as a higher, more attention-worthy form of metal? Is it really a worthy companion of women’s necks and should it be a constant resident of nations’ vaults? Not necessarily. Yet, somewhere, somehow, a man convincingly proclaimed it king of the alloys, and many followed through. Gold became money, and then later, when it grew weary of the constant travelling from one hand to the other, it received a promotion. It became the indicator to the strength of its successor: new money - paper. Metal empowering paper empowering man. But the power of gold was born in man’s head, it was never a fact; an honest lie, if you will. The validation of masses is what gave it legitimacy and power. Absurd, no? This is how I see the past three years; an inherently illogical debate in which every camp tries to proclaim its ideas as gold in the face of others. They all lied and twisted their words –inadvertently or not– to give power and validation to their ideas by the will of their followers, the people. Yet it was always the people who paid the dearest price, because just like many went poor in the pursuit of promised gold, many bled in the pursuit of mere ideas. Poor, wounded and dead, people are eventually forgotten. But the erroneous, deceitful debates live on, laying waste to more livelihoods and lives. Life is where real value resides, and it’s too valuable to waste on someone’s idea of what is worthy. Follow your own lies, not someone else’s.
