news ROWDY CITY TEENS PUSH UBA TO PEN BOOK.

A

BY Sineke Sibanda Computer Science student is set to launch a book this September in order to reach out and arm young minds with upright values to manoeuvre safely through teenhood. According to the author, Tinashe Makuti, the book Effective Teen is a book which tackles the issues faced by every teenager out there and its focus is on creating an awareness in the young person’s mind about the dangers of living a reckless life. Makuti said: “The main thing that pushed me to write the book is seeing the level of brainwashing in young minds. Visit BC (Bulawayo

Centre) on the last Saturday of any holiday you will see rowdy teenagers doing all sorts of stuff.” This book is Christian oriented and bases all its assertions on the Bible. It starts with an introduction of thought patterns highlighting how we think and the importance of our thoughts. This introduction allows the reader to understand that the only way one can effectively lead a successful life is by having a good line of thought. Makuti said the Effective Teen is a compilation of how he managed to wade through his teen-age period. The book tackles issues on alcohol, pornography, social media, premature relationships, vision formula-

tion, setting goals, practicing the will of God among other answers to some pertinent questions that teenagers ask. “With the book I hope to get to a wider audience and influence the young mind to do what is right so that they can achieve something in their lives,” Makuti said, “I’m one person who has the cry of the young person in his heart, all things I do are driven by that burning desire to see the young person achieve their goals.” Makuti is the co-founder of Love God Hate Sin Foundation (LGHS), an organisation divinely inspired to change young people’s lives and repossess them for “Kingdom’s” work.

Top tips for international students applying for jobs: (In the UK & elsewhere) Article from the guardian.com • Apply for jobs early. Many companies have long recruitment processes, so apply for jobs early on in your final year. Use your careers service to help you with your CV and personalise your application. If you get a job you will also need to apply for your working visa before your student visa expires. • Use your internationalisation to your advantage. Think about what sets you apart as an international graduate, says Ellen O’Brien, international careers adviser at the University of Birmingham. “You may have language or enhanced numeracy skills that home students don’t have.” • Check if an employer is registered to sponsor students. “If applying for a Tier 2 visa, you can check if an employer is on the Home Office list of registered UK employer sponsors,” says Justin Richardson, careers adviser at the University of Liverpool. “You should also know the salary re-

quirements and conditions of Tier 2, while other visa options such as Tier 5 could be considered. However, always check the latest visa information with your university international support team.” • Be flexible and resilient when rejected. You may want to consider other career paths. “You might not get the job of your dreams, but if you can get anything it’s a step on the ladder,” says O’Brien. • Network your way into a job. Use your university careers service, and go to international studentfocused careers fairs and introduce yourself. “Use alumni networks to contact past graduates from your country who are now working in the UK,” says David Gee, global employability manager at the University of the West of England. • Have a backup plan if you can’t stay in the UK. If your struggling to find a job in the UK, it’s good to consider backup options at home.

The Unwritten Rules Of Internship 1. Write Everything Down

Never step into your boss’s office without a notebook. Even if it’s writing down their coffee order, your boss expects you to remember everything the first time. ows you are committed to your job and really impresses your coworkers.

2. You are new.

You have no actual work experience. You do NOT have all the answers to all the questions and no one expects you to. So, jumping into the middle of a conversation with how you would solve the problem will most likely end poorly. If you are asked specifically for your input on a dis-

cussion, by all means provide it. This is your opportunity to shine.

3.Don’t Always Ask Questions

Your co-workers always encourage you to ask questions, but not stupid ones. Never ask a question you are fully capable of answering yourself. Always go the extra mile and try to solve a problem yourself. Do research, consult your notes- do whatever you have to before asking for help. Doing so will show you are dedicated to being a self-sufficient employee.

4.Work Overtime

Just because you are scheduled to

work 9-5 doesn’t mean you should pack up at 5:00 on the dot. Yes, you may be an unpaid intern, but putting in the extra time to complete an assignment for your team will pay off in the long run. If you are looking to score a recommendation letter or a possible job offer, the long hours will add extra bonus points.

5. Dress accordingly

This is a job. Dress accordingly. Showing up to an interview or your first day dressed in anything less than business casual is an insult to the company. Of course, if you are fortunate enough to work for a company that wears jeans and t-shirts most of the time, feel free to blend in (within reason). However, under no

They Traveling Business Meals – just because you can, do not order the most expensive thing are here to provide some help and insight.” circumstances should your t-shirt have an opinion of any kind printed on it and definitely nothing risqué. For females, do not dress like a little girl or a hooker. There are many TV programs showing women dressed in short skirts with low cut blouses that are not actually something a true business professional would wear to work. You want to be taken seriously, you want people to respect you and listen to you when you speak and value your opinion and technical skills, so try to stay neutral. You don’t want the main focus to be what you are wearing.

6. Steer clear of political, religious and other controversial discussions

Opinions in general can be dangerous. Do not discuss politics, religion or any other topic that may be viewed as controversial. The safest thing is not to discuss anything other than work. Possibly puppies and kittens…but definitely not controversial subjects.

7. Do everything that you are assigned to do.

If you are assigned something to do. DO IT to the best of your ability. Ask for further information, clarification or whatever you need in order for you to do the work yourself; however, do not attempt to assign it to some other intern or employee. I’ve seen this happen first hand. You were not hired to delegate work. You were hired to help out and to learn.

8. Do not make faces, roll your eyes, sigh, swear, or …

on the menu. Don’t over eat. Don’t drink alcohol. Yes, that’s what I said… indicate in any way that you feel don’t drink. Or at least if you are in a the assignment is beneath you. 9. Salary/ allowance.

Assuming you are paid for your internship, do not discuss your salary with anyone in the company except for your direct supervisor and/or whoever is designated as the contact person for payroll. If you have questions, talk with only the appropriate person.

10. Do your best to get along with everyone …

in the company, no matter what department they are in or what position they hold. This is great practice for your future. Cross-departmental collaboration and teamwork are more than just a bunch of buzz worlds. Being able to work with everyone is vitally important to your career.

11. “Open door policy”

Many companies have what is referred to as an “open door policy” – meaning if you want to talk to someone, you’re free to come in and do so. Even the most casual companies, would still expect you to knock on the door first or politely ask if this is a good time BEFORE launching into whatever you wanted to talk about.

T

MAKE YOUR WAY TO THE DANCE FLOOR

by Jason Shiri

here is a breed of madness, a type of delusion almost, that consumes a man (or woman, no gender bias here) who is driven by his identity. Such an individual can never be content with anything other than the vision he saw the day he first believed.

See, we can run from everything and everyone but ourselves and even when we have convinced everybody else that we have succeeded, our own nature will accuse us when we fall short of our dreams and aspirations. The first stage is to believe that we are worthy of the dreams God has put in our heads, this is the beginning of self confidence. The second stage is to let that dream become our identity, this stage enables one to disassociate himself from the masses and the final stage is to let that identity consume all things foreign, weak, lazy, fearful, procrastinative and under productive. Not counter productive, under productive. Our biggest vices are not the ones that keep us from going forward, our greatest vices are those that keep us from going as far forward as we can. They convince us that good is better than great, and so we settle. Afraid to let go of what we have to grasp what could be. Its risky, but it must be done.

“even when we have convinced everybody else that we have succeeded, our own nature will accuse us when we fall short of our dreams and aspirations.”

This type of individual never settles and seems to regularly pass up on deals that everyone else in population would readily jump on. He might let go of a silver mine to grab hold of the gold mine that exists only in his mind, completely believing that it will materialize into his world. It’s a state of mind that thrives on opportunity generation and is constantly probing the boundaries of possibility.

The greatest enemy of the dream chaser is his memory, because it spews out every failure, every disappointment, every heart ache and every embarrassment in such vivid detail. The spectacular failures will easily cloud the judgment of the weak soul but the even bigger successes will remind a doubtful heart. And so the challenge lies unmistakably in the ability to manage your mind and harness your will. Life will always show up to establish if you are who you claim to be. You will not escape untested. But if you have the guts to show life who you are, it will provide for you all you need to become what who you are demands you to be. And the rest is history.

Average. Normal. Acceptable. These words are distasteful to him, at war with his very nature. The exhortation is not to be foolhardy and reckless. No. Because this is a form of self destruction, and is easily the greatest cowardice a man can ever show. Rather the challenge is to follow the ignitions of the soul over the shouts of the crowd. The gentle calling of the master over the bleeting of the sheep.

You can only open your eyes to what is possible once you close your eyes to what’s probable and open your mind to what’s required of you. It doesn’t mean you have to wake up feeling like a superhero every single day, it does however mean that you are there whenever the opportunity to save the day shows up. Its a beautiful dance. Make you way to the dance floor.

The day he accepted that he could be something more.

Blue Dust “G by Kudzai Mwanza | EPISODE 2 ood, you are here... what happened to you?” Tererai Rusike asked as she moved away from Leona Rusike who was kneeling toward the head of the grave. She scanned Detective Tomudai from top to bottom then shook her head as she crossed her hands over her ample bust. “Another fight with the ex madam I presume.” “Do you even know how to mind your own business?”Lieutenant Tomudai snapped as he stepped on the lawn that lined the grave in front of them

He felt really uncomfortable being among graves but at the moment looking at graves was better than having to talk to the ladies who were surrounding him. The graves were arranged in straight lines in every direction and were close together like match boxes in a pack. He cursed under his breathe at the thought of spending the early hours of the new year surrounded by Tererai Rusike. “ Minding other people’s businesses is my business. That is one of the main reasons why I became a journalist.” Tererai said as she dropped her left hand and flipped her untied Brazilian hair weave with her right hand. “So?” “Why are we here anyway?” Lieutenant Tomudai asked. “There is a body two rows from here.” Doctor Leona answered. “I think its missing a few internal organs.” She said as she rose up holding a human heart dripping of blood. everyone apart from her jumped, Detective Madavanhu almost twisted her angle. They all looked at Doctor Leona Sahumani with fear and disgust. Tererai could feel her stomach churning. She pressed a fist against her mouth as she rubbed her stomach with her free hand. Madavanhu almost commented but was disgusted by the way Doctor Sahumani was holding the bloody heart in her hands. Her expression was that of curiosity and there was a tiny spark in those black mysterious eyes. Detective Madavanhu always questioned the reasons

JULY 2015. CM. Page 22

behind Sahumani becoming a pathologist. The rumor around the station was that she was part vampire. As ridiculous as that theory was, sometimes Detective Madavanhu considered it. One of those times was today.

“her whole body was overtaken with surreal warmth that quickly turned to wetness. As she came back to her senses, pain sliced through out her body to the point that she could not cry out loud.” “Can you stop that.”Lieutenant Tomudai demanded after he had calmed down. “Lead us to the rest of the body. Remind me to get you a transfer from Harare CID to..... I don’t care. Any where!” “Do I creep you out?” Doctor Sahumani looked at him with glowing dancing eyes. “ Just go.” Lieutenant Tomudai said in a loud whisper. “How did you become homicide detectives if you freak out at the sight of a little blood?” Doctor Sahumani asked as she swung the heart in the air amid expressions of terror and on one instance of hate. “All the bodies I work on have internal organs, I don’t know..INSIDE!” Lieutenant Tomudai said with a raised fist that he swung vigorously in air. “Easy there.” Tererai said with a nervous laugh. Detective Madavanhu tried to extend her hand to touch her boyfriend ‘s shoulder. She thought about it mid air then stopped her self. Suddenly there was an overbearing silence that was deafening. Doctor Sahumani looked around at her team members who were looking anywhere but at each other. So many things had happened in the past year

that had left everything with them being an awkward encounter. She breathed in softly as she faced the other direction, walking toward the body. Her focus was on the heart that she delicately held in her hands. Lieutenant Tomudai followed without another word. Detective Madavanhu dug her elbow into Tererai’s ribs then pointed at the Doctor and said in a hushed whisper: “How long was she here before you turned up?” “I found her here.” Rusike whispered back. “At least its not just me, she freaks you out too. “I can not say I’m freaked out. Nothing scares me, remember.” Detective Madavanhu answered as she attempted to walk. Tererai pulled her back then indicated to the Lieutenant with her head “ He did not tell me what happened either.” Detective Madavanhu answered with a cracking voice. “Don’t you think that is a lot of blood for a domestic dispute.” Tererai asked as she let go of the Detective’s hand and the two began to walk. “His wife is not like many women you know. She was nick named the Rortweiller. That should tell you something.” “Aren’t you a little bit worried?” Tererai asked as the ladies followed their other team members. “Who am I talking to right now? I happen to love my boyfriend..” she said as she stopped and turned to face Tererai with one raised brow. “Relax, its off record . I promise.” Tererai said with a naughty smile as she pat the Detective’s back. Before Detective Madavanhu had time to answer, Lieutenant Tomudai sped past them, knocking both of them off their feet. Detective Madavanhu fell on top of a freshly dug grave and loose mud particles splashed everywhere, blinding her and covering most of her face with the dust that rose as a result of the fall, making her cough. Continued to next page>>>

Tererai fell, in the opposite direction, on top of a granite tombstone. She hit the grave with her right elbow first and her ears were overtaken by a loud shattering sound. She hardly felt the rest of her body hit the ground as her whole body was overtaken with surreal warmth that quickly turned to wetness. as she came back to her senses, pain sliced through out her body to the point that she could not cry out loud. All she did was shriek and moan as she was writhing on the ground.blood gushed out of her broken hand, painting the tombstone red, but neither the detective nor the doctor noticed. Detective Madavanhu jumped back on her feet, her focus on the kneeling doctor. She suddenly was afraid to get close

to the body. Questions swirling in her mind focused on why her boyfriend had frantically left like that. Could the victim be someone they know?” Doctor Sahumani slowly turned her gaze from the face of the victim to the fear struck Detective who was close to tears. “You might want to come close for this.” the Doctor said with ice cold calm voice. “Why? Is the vic someone we know?” she asked her voice cracking with emotion. “No. But your boyfriend might.” “What?” She said as her knees turned into jelly. “The vic’s blood....” The Doctor said without blinking, rising up. “its all over your boyfriend.”

Madavanhu opened her eyes wide open as her jaw dropped. Suddenly she felt the cold morning wind chill to her bone and she went cold. Before she had time to reply, Tererai managed a high pitched wail that shot up to the sky and was echoed in the whole cemetery. Madavanhu turned around quickly as Doctor Sahumani shot up from the ground and looked at Tererai who was writhing, groaning and moaning, her fingers over her shattered elbow which was the source of an increasingly large pool of thick dark blood ...to be continued

“AS WOMEN, GOD BLESSED US WITH MANY ABILITIES AND MULTI-TASKING IS ONE OF THEM.”

S

he is a dancer, a model, a television presenter and a university student. She is also an actress. No doubt, Bathabile Dlamini is a woman of many talents. At just 23 years, she is one the few young artistes to win the prestigious National Arts Merit Award (NAMA). The charismatic actress scooped the Outstanding Actress gong for her role as Zinkabi in the theatrical production Umbiko KaMadlenya directed by Nelson Mapako. The play, which was showcased during the last year’s Intwasa Arts Festival KoBulawayo, scooped four NAMAs . Batha, as popularly known by her friends, is a second year journalism and media studies student at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST). She still cannot hide her joy for clinching the award. “It’s quite an honour to win the award and to be recognised as an artiste. This award is just a stepping stone towards greater things and it motivates me to even work extra hard to achieve my dreams,” smiled the 23 year old.. Her journey in acting began in 2009 while still a student at Eveline High school. She auditioned as a dancer for the school drama club. Her talent was discovered by her director, Thabani Hillary Moyo who assigned her an acting role. Since then, she has not looked back and she now looks forward to rehearsals at the

Centre for Talent Development (CTD) every Saturday at Eveline. “I was on stage for the first time in 2010 and that very year, I won an award for Best Supporting Actress in the Plan Intwasa High Schools Drama Competitions. This made me realise that I had more to offer than dancing and I started taking acting serious,” Bathabile recollects with glee.

In 2014, she was crowned Miss Nust first princess. She was also set to represent Bulawayo in the last year’s Miss Carnival pageant but could not participate because the contest coincided with her varsity exams. This year, she chose not to audition for the Miss World Zimbabwe pageant as it would tax her school work. She said apart from winning the NAMA award, one of her best highlights was in 2012 when she was crowned Miss Eveline, Miss Personality and Best Dressed couple all in one night.

She is also inspired by Beyonce Knowles whom she described as a “go getter.” Asked how she juggles school with every other thing that she does, she said: “As women, God blessed us with many abilities and multitasking is one of them. I am passionate about what I do to a point where it doesn’t feel like I’m working. I express myself though acting and dancing that’s how I find time to do everything.” With so many talents and the brains to complement the talents, Bathabile Dlamini is a star in the rising.

“Bathabile is a star in the rising.”

“My school work comes first. I never compromise on it because I intend to finish my studies in the prescribed four years. I’m focusing on my studies and extra-curricular activities entirely because they complement each other,” She says. However, the multi-talented Batha will contest in the Miss Professional Pageant that will be held on the 28th of March at the Bulawayo Theatre. A Poem by Andile Y Ndlovu

I WILL NEVER FALL… I DECLARE

P

eople may see me struggling but they will never see me fall. Regardless of my weaknesses or what, I will forever stand tall. People may say life is easy but truth is, living it is hard. And that is a true fact. Whatever I have set my mind on having, I know I will have. Whatever I have decided to be, I am sure I will be one day. The power of my will has brought me to where I am today. Choice, I have made Thoughts, I have held Actions, I have taken All these to create my current reality.

JULY 2015. CM. Page 28

Times always get hard, And people get to struggle more But at the end of the day They get put on the spot. I will always wear a beautiful smile, even when I want to cry, I will fight a tough battle and I know I will conquer all, For only my life. With the choices I make, I am full filling the vision I have for my life. was 4:45pm, and Tatenda might as well have been the only one in the waiting room. The only other person was his father, and as far as Tatenda was concerned, that was as good as no one at all. His father appeared more nervous than he

the audition room. This was the day he had been preparing since he was 5 when his parents had invested in a grand piano. His father always told him that as a toddler, Tatenda was always drawn to the piano and would reach out his tiny

was – he would clasp then unclasp his hands, pace up and down the room, and at ten second intervals check his watch. Tatenda thought he was being overly theatrical, but it amused him and as a consequence also put him at ease. He shook his head as his eyes followed his father across the room. Save for the sound of his father’s heavy breaths, the room was silent. The silence was quickly broken by the sound of a screeching door being opened, and a young woman walking into the room, evidently dejected. Her eyes glistened – the looming threat of tears apparent, prompting her to walk the rest of the way out face-down. Tatenda gulped loudly as he stared on, and suddenly he was uneasy again. Following behind the young woman, a man walked in and told him his audition was up. Not fully aware how, Tatenda mustered up enough courage to rise from his seat follow the man to

“Over the years, his love for piano had only grown stronger, only surpassed by his parents’ love for his piano playing.” arms for the keys and start jabbing at them. He remembered this in vivid detail, and his first piano teacher – a grumpy old German woman from his prep school who cracked the whip on him every time he missed a note. He remembered how miserable she made him. Over the years, his love for piano had only grown stronger, only surpassed by his parents’ love for his piano playing. He was a prodigy. He played at high school showcases, in church, and at family events to rave reviews from those who had the honour of watch-

ing him perform. During his high school talent show in his senior year, a recruiter from Juliard had asked him to audition for a scholarship in their music programme, much to his parents’ elation. And now, here he was. The only thing standing between him and a future in his craft was the door to the audition room. He grasped the door knob tightly, looked at his father’s anxious countenance, then at the door knob again, and finally the floor. “Was this what he really wanted? Did he want to spend the rest of his life playing piano?” All these were complex questions his mind cavorted on with no definitive answer, but the one that followed was a much more determined question. Was playing the piano his dream or his parents’? He began to think deeply. To find the answer to this question he had to reach far beyond the limits of his mind, but he couldn’t. Tatenda looked at his father’s eager face once more, and suddenly it hit him. He loved piano, he always had, but along the way that love had been tainted by his parents. Although with noble intentions, they had adulterated his love for piano because now he only played as a filial duty – he did it for them. After this epiphany, Tatenda slowly began to release his hand from the door knob and stepped away from the door. He looked at his father intently and said, “I have to do this for me” and walked out of the room.

netflix SERIES TO BINGE WATCH THIS WINTER Article credit: Indiewire.com

“GLEE” SEASON 6 (AVAILABLE JULY 18)

W

hy Should I Watch It? Well, you’re a completist, aren’t you? The modern era of binge-watching television via popular services like Amazon, Hulu and...other stuff has taught us two things: 1) People are more forgiving of bad or subpar seasons when they’re speeding through them without second thought, and 2) People will watch anything if they’ve already seen most of it. I’m not arguing the sixth and final season of “Glee” is a significant step down from Season 5, but you’ll probably check it out no matter what if you’ve seen the rest of the FOX musical. Best Episode: Amber Riley’s return in “What the World Needs Now” marked the high point for an up-and-down final season of “Glee.” Love, and if not love then friendship, conquered all — a belief near and dear to my heart — as Rachel made a somewhat forced return to Broadway while Santana and Brittany moved forward with their wedding by informing Brittany’s parents as well as Santana’s homophobic grandmother. Things got a little real for an episode where high schoolers donned tuxedos and sang Burt Bacharach tunes, but that honesty only ended up supporting the prominent theme of many musicals: all you need is love.

SCANDAL (SEASON 4)

PRETTY

LITTLE

LIARS

Why Should I Watch It? “Scandal” is no longer just quality nighttime soap. its the nighttime soap responsible for an ABC takeover via Shondaland and a resurgence of the guilty pleasure TV genre without the guilt. “Empire” wouldn’t exist without “Scandal”,and obviously neither would “How to Get Away with Murder” or upcoming drama “The Catch.” “Grey’s Anatomy” may be Shonda Rhimes’ breakout hit, but Scandal made her the power producer that she is today. Get on board or get out the way. Best Episode: Episode 19, “i’m just a Bill,” marked the last quality episode before a disappointing finale. Rowan Pope returned (always a welcome sight) and Susan was a total badass. If only the finale could have kept the momentum going, or at least not faltered under the pressure a twist-heavy series always carries.

(SEASON

5)

Why should I watch it?If anyone can actually explain to me the ABC Family brand, I would be forever indebted to you. Not only do I not understand how a subsidiary of Disney with the word family in its network name can air TV-14 series like “Baby Daddy,” “Freak Out” and “ Young & Hungry” next to animated movies like “Despicable Me” and the “Princess Diaries 2,” but I would have bet money before today that “ Pretty Little Liars” was on The CW. It just seems like a better fit, doesn’t it? Of course, I don’t know what fits on ABC Family, so I could be way off base. Best Episode: “Miss Me x 100” proves that most 100th episodes are damn fine entertainment. “ Pretty Little Liars” is still cruising along, keeping its main secret while exploring the depths of its core characters, and Episode 5 of Season 5 does just enough right to keep both trends on the upswing. The mysterious “ A” is seen texting our stars – Aria, Emily, Hanna, Spencer and Alison – after her (“A” has gotta be a girl, right?) shocking return to Rosewood. How’s “ she” reintroduce herself to the neighbourhood? By blowing up a house, of course. ABC Family, you’ve done it again.

BOOK

by Vimbai Chinembiri Masimba Musodza will be publishing Shavi Rechikadzi, a ChiShona language horror novel, with sexual violence as a main theme. The story connects to the international horror genre by narrating how a copy of De Vermis Mysteriis, the 700¬page grimoire penned by Belgian necromancer Ludwig Prinn just before he was executed in 1489 found its way to what is now Zimbabwe through the adventures of Zanzibari scholar, Mwalimu Jumah, a man who “enquired after things one ought not.” Since it is possible that, after all these years, Mwalimu Jumah himself may yet still live, the horrible tome may make several appearances in Zimbabwean literature in the future…. Musodza will also begin to serialise

readings of the novel, which, except for the last part, will be freely available online as podcasts. The author hopes to generate enough interest among the Shona¬speaking communities, especially those who live in countries with developed book industries, to create the first bestseller in the language in recent times. While his publishing model is a nod to the “small press” of the typical horror writer, Musodza recognises that he is actively establishing a new avenue for African writers, especially those who, like himself, do not adhere to the “African writer” convention established by the major publishing houses, and that other Zimbabwean authors are watching carefully this new development Title: Shavi Rechikadzi Author: Masimba Musodza Publisher: Belontos Books, ISBN: 978¬1¬908690¬27¬2 Genre: Horror/Zimbabwean Fiction/Fiction in ChiShona Language:ChiShona Release Date: 16 July 2015.

MUSIC

“Geronimo” – Sheppard (single ). by Farai Kwesha

Mainstream music can sound a little repetitive – and not

reveiw just sonically. I can’t remember the last time I gasped in awe of any single artist’s lyrical mastery or creativity. Don’t get me wrong, mainstream music, however formulaic, is awesome – the catchy hooks, the tongue-in-cheek rhymes, and even the worn out themes of love, lust, hate, intoxication (or “getting high & getting wasted” as the kids like to say these days) and partying. Sometimes however, in that pleasant mess, you discover a gem like Sheppard’s Geronimo, with all the makings (clichés and all) of a run-ofthe-mill pop song, but at the same time far superior. The song opens up with subtle pulsating drums, accompanied by guitars before lead singer George Sheppard’s vocals kick in, in what is arguably one of the most gripping verses of 2015. Even this early on, the anthemic nature of the song is instantly apparent, as the verses sound like they are building up to something epic (and THAT they are). The simple, insanely

catchy shout/sing along chorus will have you “saying geronimo” repetitively with no idea why. Geronimo is chockfull of these little subtly brilliant moments – Amy Sheppard singing “bombs away” post-chorus is just… heaven, and not to mention George’s flawless falsetto as he asks “can you feel my love?” A determined assault on the ears, I don’t think the song will fade into obscurity any time soon. In fact, I’d imagine that Geronimo will without a doubt become one of the Brisbane band’s defining tracks, and one of the defining tunes of 2015, and the soundtrack to millions of music fans around the world. VERDICT - In Geronimo, the band is diving into a waterfall (or from one) and tempting you to join them, and you just might. ⍟⍟⍟⍟⋆ (4 ½ stars out of 5)

A Poem by Francis Chikanga

FAKE SMILE I was once sad and lonely, Having nobody to comfort me, So I wore a mask that always smiled To hide my feelings behind a lie. Before long, I had many friends With my mask, I was one of them. But deep inside, I still felt empty, Like I was missing a part of me. Nobody could hear my cries at night For I designed my mask to hide the lies. Nobody could feel the pain I felt For I designed my mask to laugh. Behind all the smiles were the tears And behind all the comfort were

the fears. Everything you think you see, Wasn’t everything there was to me. Day by day, I was slowly dying. I couldn’t go on, There was something missing.. Until now I’m still searching For the thing that’ll stop my crying. For someone who’ll erase my fears, For the person who’ll wipe my tears. But till then I’ll keep on smiling. Hiding behind this mask I’m wearing. Hoping one day I can smile, Till then, I’ll be here.. waiting

Sex Education: It’s Time For The Church To Step Up!

Even though the primary role of educating children about sexuality has been relegated to school teachers, there is no doubt that it belongs to parents. The challenge is that parents simply do not know how to talk to their children about sex, largely because their parents did not talk to them about it either, since they strongly held the traditional beliefs that it was taboo.

JULY 2015. CM. Page 36

That said, the church is therefore left with the moral obligation of training parents to be the primary sex educators. According to Ministry Today this can be accomplished by offering parents an elective in the adult curriculum of Christian education programs where they can be taught by godly, qualified instructors how to open up to their children about sexuality from a biblical point of view. Of course this manoeuvre will not be void of challenges as some congregants and religious ministers might find the sex education class controversial and even offensive, hence the need to ensure it is an elective. The subject of sexuality in the church has always been touchy, but discerning Christians have to realize that taking charge of sexual education is far less controversial than leaving it to children’s peers, social media and pornographers. Who will teach this class? Well, anyone with educational psychology background to accurately explain sexual physiology to parents such as a teacher, nurse or a doctor would be suitable. In order to administer sex education, the church must have confidence in the chosen instructor’s spiritual commitment so as to help parents make young people stewards of their own sexuality.

The most obvious misconception is that, sex education is just about sex, period. Sex is the central theme, but there’s a lot more. At church, sex education should include imparting biblical sexual moral values and attitudes and not potray sex as merely dirty, but as a normal human act which has a noble cause. It is therefore time for the church to up the ante on the proactive role of sex education by training parents to be the primary sexuality guides as much as it has stepped up to the reactive role of warning youth and adults against the evils of sexual sins.

by Tafadzwa Tam’sanqa Mhepoh |@mhepoh

O

ur society abounds with promiscuity and its resulting ills - baby dumping, abortion, sexually transmitted diseases and more recently crimes of passion. These phenomena indicate that society is sexually uncultured and badly needs sex education. Undoubtedly, sex saturation in the media is fuelling these ills and the moral deterioration in our society. Surely, the world is in a crisis as secularization of sex as a form of adult entertainment is at its peak, whilst divorce rates are rising rapidly due to infidelity issues. Zimbabwe too has not been spared. According to the Demographics and Health Surveys Youth indicator of 2006, the average age at first intercourse was 18 for both men and women, but many may begin experimentation quite earlier. The My-Zimbabwe headline of 13 February 2015 reading: “Grade 2 Pupils Caught Having Sex At Break Time” is a case in point. With the church symbolized as the moral campus of our country, granted that 84 percent of Zimbabweans are Christians, (Evangelical Fellowship in Zimbabwe -2004) it is crucial that it plays a more proactive role in ameliorating the crisis by educating congregants about sexuality. Historically, the church is responsible for imposing much, if not most, of the shame, stigma and embarrassment attached to sexuality that makes it so difficult to talk about it.

Sex education should be part of the school curriculum.

S

exual health education should be part of both the primary and high school curriculum. If included, such a move would contribute to a reduction in the high rates of adolescents who have sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unwanted pregnancies. World over, the problem of STIs has been of concern to health authorities. Last year, the World Health Organisation noted that there has been an average of 19 million STIs reported every year. Half of these infections are amongst adolescents and young adults.

by Christabel Ndlazulwana

In order to reduce this, Sexual health education needs to be incorporated into the school curriculum. When students understand the risks associated especially with unprotected sex, they may be able to make healthy decisions regarding sex not only now but throughout their lives. Without a comprehensive sexual education program facilitated by a professional, adolescents and young adults will often base their decisions on misinformation from peers and bogus Internet sources. Sexually active adolescents aged between 15 and 19 are at a higher risk of acquiring STIs as compared to adults. This is because of behavioural, biological, and cultural reasons. Behavioural, According to the most recent estimates, 15 to 19 year-old females continue to be infected by Chlamydia and gonorrhoea as compared to other age-sex group. This infection rate has been largely attributed to the early initiation of sexual activity amongst people in this age group. Through sex education, young people are able to communicate, listen, negotiate with others, ask for and identify sources of help and advice when it comes to sexual relationships. This has a great impact on preventing sexual problems in

adulthood. Information on sexual matters is usually obtained informally through the media and friends, and much of this information may be insufficient or not properly conveyed. Thus school should include sexual education in their curriculum to avoid learning from the Internet, as is happening now. It is only through sex education in schools that students will get proper and honest information about sexually transmitted diseases. Comprehensive sex education teaches teens about contraception and basics of sexual activity. This can increase the odds that they use it specifically to prevent pregnancy, as well as STIs. Introducing sex education in schools can reduce the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases as well as HIV infections among the youth. In 2014 World Health Organisation noted that one in every four new HIV infections is found in people who are under 22 years of age. By proper sex education, to some extent, such new infections can be controlled. It is only through sex education in schools that students will get proper and honest information about sexually transmitted diseases. However, students tend to look at it as a subject of ridicule, and even don not attend the classes. In another case, many groups of people believe that their children should not be exposed to something as crude as sex education in their school days due to their religion affiliation which does not permit it. There is no denying that goes against their religious beliefs and sentiments. It becomes very hard to argue with people when they bring religion to the forefront. Sometimes, students may listen to the lecturers going on and on about safe sex, but in the end Free Web Content, encourages then to engage in unsafe sex.

IF

THERE is one thing that destroys relationships between couples of all ages be it in teenage relationships, young adults or married people, it’s the interference of other people and their involvement in couples’ affairs. The moment people start telling you tales about your partner and as soon as they get too involved to a point that they control your lives it becomes a huge problem. As much as you need help and advice from other people from time to time, one must learn to maintain independence as well as to develop the ability to deal with his or her issues on their own sometimes. Friend just won’t mind his or her own business! As much as you love your friends sometimes you just want them to keep their distance especially when it comes to your love life. Some friends always have something to say about your lover, not necessarily meaning that they are out to destroy your relationship but sometimes it might just be too much for you to handle. As a friend one needs to know when to draw the line. You must not allow friends must not meddle in your

Tell your friends how much you appreciate their concern for you and let them know how much you would love to learn to handle your affairs on your own. Mummy knows best! There is nothing as frustrating as being in a relationship with someone and you feel like you are suffocating because your space is being invaded. When it comes to their sons, mothers often feel like they know best, but the truth is sometimes momma has to step down a bit. You know you are in a relationship with a momma’s boy when mummy wants to stamp her authority and prove she is better than any woman her son gets involved with. When mum interferes a lot problems and fights are likely to pop up. As a man it is important to communicate with your mother and let her know how much both she and your lover mean to you, it’s not a competition after all. At the end of the day you need both of them in your life.

Brother thinks he is superman! When it comes to their sisters, brothers always feel like no man can ever be good enough for their sister and as a result he makes his sister’s lover’s life a living hell. Often when a brother finds out a man has mistreated his sister, the first thing that comes to his mind is to break his bones, but the question is, will he always be around to fight his sister’s battles for the rest of her life? As a couple people need to make their own rules and learn to abide by them. Ladies tell your dear brother to teach his fellow brothers to be better men so that all men can be the kind of men he wants for you!
