A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
Learning theoretically is a good thing but practical experience in every academic field is the actual taste of your career. Lets not put too much pressure on ourselves in trying to be fully committed on what we want to write than what we need to produce in life. I can safely say that is suicidal to every university graduate. Practically, universities must be places to nurture careers, introduce students to real life than merely thinking how to. Spending years of learning theory than practical experience always turns me off. Let us be producers, and not introducers if we are to be successful in our careers. Campus Moments is glad to bring you yet another exciting edition of magazine. I would want give much honor to the team who gave much efforts in trying to come up with this copy of magazine. They always say it is nicer and effective when it is a threesome. Joined hands always make work easier. In this feature, the magazine sought to take you back to previous semesters, deeply looking at 2014-2015 academic year in retrospective. The year not to forget, the magazine has super articles and comics which tackles the previous SRC under former president shadowlit Ndou. In case you missed drama and action which so many of us described as horror, its now your time to feel it. This time we are introducing campus radio. (Radio on whaaa!!). This initiative is promulgated to enhance students engagement and to give wider range of platforms where students can express themselves. We are inviting those willing to participate, in terms of producing different kinds of programmes that mainly affects students lives. You can visit our online platforms to get detailed information on how the radio will be operating.

NUST GUARANTEES AN ARCHITECTURAL FUTURE TO ZIMBABWEANS
T
by Princess Mpofu he National University of Science and Technology department of architecture held an exhibition to showcase the work of the first, second, third and fifth year students at the national art gallery spanning over a fortnight, from the 23rd of july to the 6th of August 2015. The works displayed during the exhibition represented the selected projects from the department’s first, second, third and fifth year Bachelor of Architectural studies students as well as the 6th year Masters students. The exhibition was titled Tomorrow’s Hut, making reference to both tthe future and the traditional hut in Zimbabwe. In an interview with Campus Moments, Professor John Knight, a
lecturer in the department said; “ The title tomorrow’s hut makes reference to both the future and the primary architectural form in Zimbabwe, that is the traditional hut”.
educate the public about architecture and also showcased different possibilities for the future development aimed at improving the city and the country side.
“ In other words, we are looking at the future of Zimbabwean architecture as seen through the works of tomorrow’s architects, our students”.
Michael Mbengo a part 3 architecture student and one of the organisers of the event said: “ We mostly got recognition from people, as well as experience of setting a good exhibition”.
The exhibition provided an opportunity for the public to see the ideas and projects being prepared by NUST students, the future architects of our built environment. Professor Knight said: “The exhibition helps raise awareness to individuals, organisations, professionals and industries who may one day work with our students when they qualify”. He said this exposure also helped
First, second and third year students designed structures that ranged from small and medium scaled rural and peri-urban projects to complex ones for larger multistory buldings in the urban context . Fifth year students dealt with urban regeneration in the city of Bulawayo. However, fourth year students were not part of the exhibition since they are on industrial attachment,

in Lawn Tennis both men and women and scooped gold medals. In athletics, Ushe scooped the gold in a 200m sprint while Confidence got bronze in one of the long distance race. Women basketball was not played because Malawi and Zambia had no teams. Midlands State University represented Zimbabwe in Men’s Football and volleyball. According to Tsitsi, Zimbabwe performed very well and had the most medals in all categories and led in exemplary behavior. “Zimbabwean athletes are well-behaved. I mean if you have people who are able to practice on their own, its proof enough that people are well behaved and disciplined enough to know what to do at a particular time,” she said. The ZIZAMA games were played after the Zimbabwe Tertiary Institutions Sports Union games (ZTISU) where NUST students had also put a fair performance bringing home four gold medals and three silver medals.

or several years, NUST has been led by seemingly incompetent SRC members who instead of serving the wishes of the students have rather served their own interests, diverting funds or even eating monies intended for students while on various occasions. They have failed to represent students in the overall decision making of students affairs, let alone to establish a smooth continuity plan that may ensure the sustainability and the movement of the Union. In 2013, LUCKY MUZA served his tenure well but there were cases of using students and his leadership team to push national political agendas which were not consensually agreed upon and there were incessant strikes during his term of office. Not that I do not acknowledge that being the union’s president does not mean you can control everything, but students were not necessarily on his priority list. SHADOWLIT NDOU was an angel before he went into power but it was until he got that presidential seat that he started seating on student’s issues and dine with the students’ foes. So much was said about him embezzling funds, I cannot attest to this being true because my investigations from official offices had no such cases on him. Well, say he was an angel on that but he was never consistent with his devotion to student as he had shown on the day of elections where he sent busses to go and get NUST students from outside campus to come and vote. It all changed the moment he became the president.

“For several years, NUST has been led by seemingly incompetent SRC members who instead of serving the interests of the students, have served their own” ‘I have witnessed students voting conmen into power simply because of their looks and popularity not because of their policies. I cannot say how ignorant this makes academics’ look but its sad that they even complain about sometimes but do nothing. Another set of ignorant students is the one that says “we do not have time to vote”. As good and clever as it sounds, it means the ignorant set that will vote will vote for someone who will make your time and life harder for the next coming year. See where the ignorance comes in, u choose 365 days of suffrage over one day of choosing the right leader to give you a piece of mind for the next year. Be careful, they will promise you heaven but they will first take themselves to that heaven and start
looking down on you and make more promises. I’m personally looking for a leader who will make promises and go together with students to reach those promises. I’m not looking for anyone radical, but one who is practical, who will account to students what is happening, one who will remember that the position he holds was won through people’s trust. Above all, most SRC presidents I have read about and met, none of their team players were happy to work with them because they seemingly despised the power of delegation and wanted to do everything by themselves causing divisions within their boards which later affected their entire performance. I urge all the students to be wise in the kind of leaders you will choose. I cannot emphasise enough the kind
of hungry chameleons we see hunting for votes, but afterwards, the actual colours resurface and then we start to wonder what happened. Of course some of them will woo you with their swag, but swag without students’ interests and values is pointless, some will entice you with their speech but its all in vain if they won’t act on their words. I can’t emphasise enough, or else brace yourself for another disappointment. #theleaderwewwant : join the conversation on twitter and share your thoughts on the ideal students representative.

SORE THROAT COULD KILL YOU
H
by Neddy Makonza ave you ever had a sore throat? If the answer is YES, what did you do about it? Did you see a doctor or you just took some lemons or warm water? Strep throat or commonly known as sore throat is caused by group A streptococci bacteria and less commonly
by other microbes. It usually occurs in children and young adults. The infection can recede without treatment. This however has consequences as the years go by as it will lead to development of serious heart diseases. If strep throat is not treated it progresses to rheumatic fever (RF) then to rheumatic heart diseases (RHD) and finally infective endocarditis (IE). These heart diseases have a high mortality especially if discovered late. Treating strep throat with antibiotics can prevent rheumatic fever. Moreover, regular antibiotics (usually monthly injections) can prevent patients with rheumatic fever from contracting further strep infections and causing progression of valve damage. The global burden of disease caused by rheumatic fever and RHD currently falls disproportionately on children and young adults living in low-income countries like Zimbabwe and is responsible for about 233,000 deaths annually. Symptoms to watch out for risk of
SEPT 2015. CM. Page 10
getting rheumatic heart disease are: • A sore throat accompanied by tender, swollen lymph glands (nodes) • A sore throat without cold symptoms, such as a runny nose • A red rash that starts at the head and neck, then expands to the trunk and extremities • Difficulty swallowing anything, including saliva • Thick or bloody
At least 15.6 million people are estimated to be currently affected by RHD with a significant number requiring repeated hospitalization. The end stage treatment is open heart surgery which is unaffordable and also unavailable in our country . Overcrowding, poor housing conditions, undernutrition and lack of access to healthcare play a role in the persistence of this disease in developing countries. The decline of rheumatic fever in
developed countries is believed to be the result of improved living conditions and availability of antibiotics for treatment of group A streptococcal infection. Rheumatic heart disease and infective endocarditis are diseases that can be prevented if the initial causes are eradicated at the time of infection. So let us join together and have rheumatic heart disease free generation by treating sore throats.
discharge from the nose • A bright red tongue with bumps all over it, known as strawberry tongue Acute rheumatic fever primarily affects the heart, joints and central nervous system. The major importance of acute rheumatic fever is its ability to cause fibrosis of heart valves, leading to crippling valvular heart disease, heart failure and death.
Neddy Makonza is in her final year of studying Medicine at NUST.
#fit4ever The hard work is in the kitchen… by Lance Ghigodo | G.Z.U
M
ost of the people believe loading extraordinary weighs in workouts and sweating your guts out in the gym is the real challenge and the right track to obtain “super duper” muscle gains or a cute bikini sexy body for summer but the real deal is way beyond that. It is so unbelievable and yet so true that one can get good results with less training or lose that potbelly with less training. The secret is fighting the real battle which is right under our nose, in the kitchen. During my experience in the different gyms I have been in most people train hard but they do not give a damn about nutrition. The time one spends in the working can possibly go down the drain when nutrition is ignored. I do not behold the best gains nor do I look very fabulously ripped but after noting that about 80 % of gains are in the kitchen I changed my attitude towards monitoring my nutrition. As a body builder to gain muscle you need to supply your body with a suitable amount of calories. The amount of calories you supply your body with should more than the amount of calories you use when working out. Portion sizes at meal time should be well controlled aiming to get 40-60 grams of protein and 40 to 50 grams of carbohydrates depending with your body size. This is meant to avoid fat storage processes in the body and dietary fats should
be as low as possible despite healthy fats such as olive oil, fatty fish and nuts. The main trick here is to gain clean mass and get rid of dirty useless weight. Clean weight also enhances your performance at the gym or in your sporting discipline. The essentials in obtaining the body of your dream is adding essential protein supplying foods to your grocery, fruit/vegetables to supply you with vitamins to recover the damages done to the body during training and water should be your best friend.
“to gain muscle you need to supply your body with a suitable amount of calories..” Diet control may seem too boring or expensive but it happens to be the real battle to consider fighting. Suitable diet can be obtained without using expensive supplements or protein shakes but adding more healthy food to your menu. An increase of egg whites, white meat, low fat milk, beans/ legumes, lean red meat, brown rice, whole wheat bread, nuts, bananas, apples, oranges and sugar free fruit juice could help you gain enormous gains without killing yourself with so much hard , exercises and heavy weights. With a protein to fat ratio of 60:1, egg whites are unquestionably one of the purest forms of protein in the world. This magnificent muscle-building food also possesses
an extremely high biological value. White meats such as chicken and turkey breasts should be a staple in every bodybuilder’s diet. Aside from providing an excellent source of high quality protein, they are also extremely low in saturated and transfats. Fish has an added advantage of essential fatty acids such as omega-3 to help support the muscle-building process. If you are serious about building muscle, you cannot ignore the power of beans and legumes. When people typically think of bodybuilding foods, they immediately refer to various lean meats, but what they do not realize is that the bean is a delicious and highly nutritious source of protein and fiber. Lean ground beef and cuts of red meat are excellent mass building food sources rich in protein, iron, zinc and B vitamins. Red meats have a high calorie per serving ratio, making it an excellent choice for hard gainers looking to pack on some serious size. You also need a good source of slow-burning carbohydrates to fuel and sustain your muscles. Slow-acting carbohydrates found in foods such as oatmeal and sweet potatoes make the best pre-workout snack. When it comes to muscle builders, the first thing to come to mind is meat but water is essential to everyone. 70% of a human body is water and muscle, tissue cells and ligaments all contain water and most importantly, your life force - blood - is made up substantially of water.

ecently a friend and I engaged in a conversation about the poor, why some people had more than others and what we had to do about the difference. He is somewhat a rightist and I’m somewhat a leftist. I suggested that perhaps the poor were our emancipation, an opportunity to prove our goodwill. He suggested that some people were poor by choice, laziness and planar thinking were his reasons for their poor quality of life (for adults that is). Either way these two polar understanding of a common problem brought us together in an effort to change it 29 April was the date it all came together for us. We walked into King George the VI with a package beyond the seams of expectation that had confined (and motivated) our effort. We walked into our destiny not as two people but as a team of 14 with supplies which would go a long way in the running of this prestigious institution which deals with the ed-
ucation of disabled youths. We had done something good for people who couldn’t do it for themselves. How did we get from and idea to a life changing event? Our success was not without obstacle or incident. Being unemployed, money wasn’t easy to come by. But we had plenty of fuel-ambition. And that’s all we needed. We didn’t even need to mobilize a team, all we did was share our vision and people were happy to join us. And our vision was clear. Crystal clear and people were attracted by that clarity. We all like shiny things:). When we set the deadline we were all forced to make it work. Michael(rightist) and myself (leftist) more so than anyone else. This was to be our establishment or undoing as activists. Fortunately our team was composed of amazingly dedicated, creative and loving people. They held our hands when we had no steam and lead the team when the darkness overwhelmed us. Taking nothing away from them, they were our guardian angels. I mentioned earlier that we walked in to that place with an undeniable pack-
the kids. We didn’t just feed their bodies though we fed their souls. With two motivational presentations presented by myself and an aspiring Dr. Inno as well as a poetic illustration of brilliance by Michael and a dominant proChrist interaction by our youth pastor Lloyd and our Mc Gerome Brock (I had to include his full name it just sounds so powerful lol) we totally rocked those kids with inspiration. What’s more, we had the hardest hip hop routine I’ve ever seen live by my main man Simba. They would never be the same after that day. Neither would we. See what this project did for me personally more than anything else is it further etched into the crevices of my purpose the need to dream bigger and harder and more frequently because it’s possible. It opened my eyes, or rather further separated my eyelids, and showed me what’s possible. That one project birthed the organization to be - Oui composed of fifteen members from various walks of uni-
versity life who have all come together under the banner of changing our world for the better. We decided that as long as it’s up to us we will deal generously with the people who need a hand in an unforgiving world. We will be their forgiveness. Their brother and sisters. Their friend and bffs. We will replace the lovers who walked right passed the opportunity to create a smile. The details of this organization including its origins members and future projects are locked in the vault of our imagination (you weren’t expecting that one were you :P) and to a limited extent on our facebook page : Oui

okutenda Madavanhu paced around the waiting room, while sucking on her left thumb, her right hand in her trouser pocket. She had tried several times, since getting into West End Hospital, to contact Zvikomborero without any success . His phone had been turned off and he had been last seen on whatsapp around one in the morning, about two hours ago. After the last attempt, Madavanhu had asked herself what she would have asked him or said to him had he been available and she had drew a blank. She had concluded that it was better that he was unavailable , but surprisingly that made her feel worse inside. Nokutenda took a deep breath as she finally sat down, her mind still clouded with the events that had characterised the earlier hours. What a way to welcome the new year, ha! The doctor’s words were still ringing in her head, making her increasingly scared and cold. She had not been able to question the doctor further more because of Tererai’s shattered elbow, and she still had to wait a few hours before she satisfied her curiosity, Tererai still needed a ride from the hospital. She exhaled loudly trying to figure things out. The more she thought about it, the more crazier she felt. She then suddenly jumped from the couch, not able to sit still anymore. She resumed pacing round the room, her left thumb in her mouth again. “Excuse me.” Came a voice by the door that made Madavanhu jump from her own skin. She began to relax as the owner of the voice, a woman who was dressed in grey slacks and a buttoned up black blazer with a collar, began to walk toward her. The woman had short brown hair that was curly and glistened under the warm yellow light in the room. She had a honey colored complexion with no make up and a bit of vaseline on her chocolate brown lips.
SEPT 2015. CM. Page 18
“Hi.” Madavanhu said as she watched the other woman take a sit. “You are Detective Nokutenda Madavanhu, right.” “How do you know my name?” Madavanhu asked as she dropped her thumb, still frozen in her position. “Can you sit down, please.” “Am I in trouble?” “Did you do something that could get you in trouble?” “No.” “Then no.”
“Zviko being as violent as he was and how that would affect their future together ...was not something she was willing to consider at that moment, especially not in front of another woman.”
“You know my name. But I don’t know yours.” Madavanhu said as she sat at the edge of the couch, looking at the other woman with suspicion and skepticism. “My name is Lieutenant Kudakwashe Dongo, I’m your new partner.” “My old partner is fine, Lie..” “Just call me Dongo. Your old partner is under investigation for attempted murder.” She paused then with a lower voice accompanied by a half smile she added, “ He has been suspended.” “They can’t do that! Zviko...Lieutenant Tomudai is not capable of murder.” Madavanhu cried as she jumped from her sit, waving her hands in the air. “Apparently you don’t know him as much as you think, Madavanhu.” “I know him fine...” Madavanhu shouted getting emotional and very defensive. “I know that.” Dongo interrupted with a voice that carried the same intensity as Madavanhu’s. “ You two knew each
other intimately...a little too intimately considering that he was still married to the woman he attempted to murder.” “He hasn’t seen her for almost a year by the way. And let me tell you something Dongo, he divorced the woman sixteen months ago. Apparently YOU don’t have your facts right.” “Honey, they were separated not divorced. and he attempted to kill her last month, she is clinging onto life at Avenues clinic as we speak. Actually YOU don’t have your facts right.” “You don’t have proof of that.” “Actually I do. Tererai’s office was searched about an hour ago after the man found in Warren Hills was identified. There was a lot on your boyfriend and his wife and every bloody thing in between.” Dongo paused ,got up then took a step toward Madavanhu, “I must say...I was a little surprised... that you would want to be with someone like that.” “Tererai was doing an investigation on my BOYFRIEND?!” Madavanhu said ignoring Dongo’s remark. Madavanhu had though over and over again about that. Zviko being as violent as he was and how that would affect their future together. However, it was not something she was willing to consider at that moment. And especially not in front of this woman. “She IS doing an investigation on your boyfriend. What we have so far is enough to get him arrested for assault.” “That bitch!” Madavanhu spat out with both her fists clenched. “She is one indeed. I’m glad you feel that way.” “Why?” Madavanhu asked her voice dropping into a loud whisper, with one brow raised. “It won’t be hard for you to grill her.” “About what?” Madavanhu asked after a full moment had gone without Dongo elaborating further. “She intimately knew the dead man and might have been the last person to see him alive.”

By Buhle Nkomo inally the Campus Moments team managed to meet Ashley Morgen, a 21 year old bubbly, ambitious and fun loving marketer. Having been crowned the Queen of the institution, Ashley expressed sentiments of gratitude and humility because she has been empowered with a voice. “Holding the Miss NUST title has been an honour that has allowed me to dream for greater heights,” said Ashley. She also mentioned that she loves the idea of being an ambassador of the youth, talent and promoting beauty with brains. Ashley said: “From what i understand, beauty pageants are about celebrating beauty and promoting it through addressing social welfare problems in societies.” Considering that she is currently on Industrial Attachment at which means that she will be away from campus during her reign, Ashley has therefore made plans to embark on projects that will socially empower and reach out to youths all over Bulawayo. “Primarily I will be engaging in mostly work of the hands and intellectual projects,” said Ashley. “As I ‘m a student, that’s the best resource available to me at the moment. However, I do have bigger plans and you will be the first to know when the chickens do hatch.” The Queen also mentioned that the best way tackle the societal problems is through offering selfless service to the community. Ashley also known as ‘Miss Pretty Ash’ on twitter extended her gratitude to God for his blessings and to family and friends for their support and belief in her. She also expressed her gratitude to NUST community for giving her the platform to be heard.

The talented Goto was taught tennis by the then deputy head of the school who made her discover her potential and stand out from her peers. Ever since she came to NUST, she has won ten awards in table tennis, six in her first year and four in her second year. Tsitsi makes her life easy in that she is able to balance her practice sessions with her school work. “ I just don’t practice every day, so I alternate practice days and I rarely take a full day practicing, therefore, it gives me time to go back to my studies,” she said. The golden girl is motivated by the work and time she puts in when practicing. Her teammates and coaches also push her to be better. In the next five years, Tsitsi wants to be playing in open leagues so that she can learn from the crème de’ la crème of the nation. Tsitsi is the current President of the Debate and Public Speaking Society and has represented NUST in several countries; however she will be passing on the baton at the beginning of this academic year. The talented young lady is also the public relations officer of the Rotaract Club of NUST.

You invaded my private world with your beautiful smile and understanding heart, And I wondered to myself that you were different right from the very start. You listened without judgment to what I had about me to say, And even after I was done with the good, the bad, theugly you still didn’t run away You’re my sun on a cloudy day You’re my umbrella on a rainy day You’re my everything what can I say You’re in my mind each and every day... Times have been tough, and things have gone wrong, But the deep love we share has been there all along. You say why go on, there’s nothing that’s right, But we never give up, we continue to fight. When I say I love you, please believe it’s true. When I say forever, know I’ll never leave you. When I say goodbye, promise me you won’t cry, Because the day I’ll be saying that will be the day I die. So this poem goes out to you For everything you’ve done And I hope now you understand That baby, you’re the one! I

I wished for your love on a shooting star and didn’t think my wish would get too far. Then you opened your heart and let me in, that’s where this crazy love story begins.
short story The Perfect Holiday
T
he perfect holiday I can hardly believe my heart is fluttering under the flattering gaze of the dark pair of eyes. A few moments ago it had been loudly beating against my chest, threatening an explosion that would show how possible it is to die from anger. Thinking of what pissed me off makes me click my tongue till the couple sitting next to me raise eyebrows. I wonder if they will rise to their feet and find another spot when I start banging the table. The dark pair of eyes are still following my moves as I dig for some notes from my handbag. I am so particular about my possessions being in order until somebody crosses my path.so it is not surprising that both the money and my hand are covered in black opal’s facial powder and I only got to notice that after staining my white tailored number. Before I pull a clumsy smile and look away, my eyes lock with the dark pair of eyes and I realise there is something familiar about them. With the knowledge that someone is watching, my mind goes into the world of the craziest of imaginations and I let it. I am on a horse with the shiniest of coats. It seems he has been taught to be on his best behaviour because I wouldn’t fancy a dirty gown. Although the owner mentioned how he hates the bright colours, the beast trots steadily on the red carpet to get me to the Adonis who awaits my arrival at the aisle’s end. Passion is written all over his face. ‘My goddess,’ he whispers as I take my place next to him after getting a peck on my hand from my father. Suddenly fear gives himself a free ride on me. It is rather sending chills down my spine because I start shifting uncomfortable on my chair. Truth is, I am not that used to the idea of marriages. The last time I fantasised about my wedding day was after a talk with Mum and Dad when I was still sixteen.Zinhle and I had gone to a party and due to reasons that my father would not accept let alone believe we had come home after an hour after our curfew hour. Just like what our parents said to my sister and me, many
of the folks will call marriage the most splendid holiday. A conditional holiday which relies on a young person who sets his or her priorities right, ‘who reaches the peak of her academic and carrier life before any other peaks’, Dad would emphasise these words with a bang on the mahogany dining room table. ‘Only after that can you talk of a Mr. or Mrs. Right,’ Mother usually said this every time we told her about how we wanted to be the best citizens of the country. I still laugh at the thought that that we believed that being a one of the best citizens needed someone who was rich. We were biased to assuming one had to have a fat account and a fancy job title, and, yes a fancy name to contribute to the society. Oh my word, surely is this the aisle to be declared the way to my perfect holiday. Where I will bury my head in a chest so comfy and let my ear be attentive to his deep, fascinatingly soothing voice. Waves of ecstasy take over my slender body as a vivid picture of babes in their cots slides into my imagination. The seductive voice calls them ‘our bundles of joy.’ I let out a huge sigh that does not get the couple sitting next to me rising to their feet because they are so into looking into each other’s eyes. I am begin to conclude these guys have not seen each other in a long time but I brush that off and replace it with ‘love and its weird effects’ as I roll my eyes .it is after I call for another r glass of something to drink that I spot the pair of eyes looking at my direction. Are there no thorns in the chest I just referred to as comfy, it is possible to find needles buried in pillows too. Or maybe ,one day I will be heart wrecked when he forgets that he and I have ‘bundles of joy’ to our name .I am very certain I will be a mess when he starts distasting my face in his dreams. Headaches will come with his weird homecoming hours after work .I am beginning to doubt I can stand the dark eyes wandering on someone else’s body. ’But you said I am your goddess,’ I can imagine myself crying. ‘You must be crazy, I got no ample time to be kissing the ground you walk on Lihle.’his would be a cold voice reply which is not so moved by my bad state. Such a
scene makes me question myself if this kind of love is eternal or shortlived.I am in huge favour of the latter adjective. Well, I am deciding I don’t want to be a victim of what is termed perfect whilst it is flawed. Talk of a ‘tsunami – infested’ holiday destination. I can’t be nursing babies who will have a blind eye being turned on them. I think my salary can afford me the softest feather –packed pillows, I really need no chest for coaxes or you call it cuddling. I am being generous with giving the world the freedom of judging me or not but I have never liked the idea of weddings and rings. Rather absurd to many of my family members, I really opt for a different perfect holiday. They shouldn’t expect to see a million carat diamond ring flashing on my finger. Decision made, I close my fantasy doors .I laugh at my reflection and realize what a fanatic of fantasizing I can be. I swirl the contents in my glass till they splash on my white number. I can really be so clumsy when I am angry with Quinton, I don’t even take his calls when he wants to apologise.it does not really change the fact that he is unfaithful if I accept the apologies. My parents would literally give up on me if they find out I can sometimes be the last one to leave the bar.it will make me the only one who resorts to the bottle when social burdens threaten to send me crushing down. I mouth ‘I am not interested ‘to the admirer’s direction though his pair of eyes make me go weak in the knees. I switch off my phone, whirl on my stilettos and walk away to my one perfect holiday. ’Quinton must forget about us,’ I whisper to myself .I stagger on my way to my car and twist my left ankle. ‘And I really must quit this and be good to myself,’ I think I screamed those words out because a man who was four cars away from me nearly jumped out his skin.

SERIES TO BINGE WATCH IN SEPTEMBER Article credit: Indiewire.com “CALL
THE MIDWIFE” SEASON 4 (AVAILABLE SEPTEMBER 14)
Why Should I Watch It? Why Should I Watch It? I know, I know. Two PBS shows at the top of the list for September? And it’s not as though this is a month lacking new releases -- scroll to the bottom of the page to see just how many other shows are being released in an absolutely stacked September. But instead of mindlessly staring at “The Mysteries of Laura” or dutifully finishing “The Following,” give these fine women a shot instead. “Call the Midwife” is a rare example of top-notch TV made for the whole family. That’s right. It’s as good as just about anything out there, and you don’t have to wait for the kids to go to bed or, if you’re a young, hip, childless fan of the small screen, suffer any conflicted moral dilemmas while rooting for the central characters. It’s a refreshing change of pace, and one that may make you want to keep stepping its way.
“GOTHAM” SEASON 1 (AVAILABLE SEPTEMBE 21)
Why Should I Watch It? Despite what Ben McKenzie’s been saying about the “mistakes” of Season 1, the first year in “Gotham” was actually pretty solid (not that he’s been bad-mouthing the show, just publicizing its second season). Yes, it got a little too reliant on the “villain of the week” formula, but the production design and casting elevated the slightlyserialized crime drama above the other cops and robbers episodic content out there. And now that Season 2 is going to be even more focused on the long game, extending storylines beyond a 42-minute timeline, this the time to catch up with soon-to-be Commissioner Gordon. Best Episode:: “Rogues’ Gallery” finds a young Jim Gordon (McKenzie) on the outs with the Gotham P.D., demoted down to a security guard at Arkham Asylum where a deranged “doctor” is experimenting on the inmates. With the help of Dr. Leslie Thompkins (Morena Baccarin of “Homeland” and “Firefly” fame), Gordon picks up the case for a gripping change of pace, just when the season needs it.
“PARENTHOOD” SEASON 6 (AVAILABLE SEPTEMBER 25) Best Episode: It’s always tempting to pick the finale of a final season, because series cappers leave such an impact. Yet the best episode of Season 6 came two weeks earlier with “Let’s Go Home.” Max (Max Burkholder) is charged with developing a mysterious set of photos for his grandparents while Crosby (Dax Shepard) and Adam (Peter Krause) flip flop on what to do with their failing business. Both stories work better in reality than they sound in summary, but the true inspiration of Episode 11 comes with the reunion of fan favorite couple Joel (Sam Jaeger) and Julia (Erika Christensen). A seasons-long examination of what can make a marriage fall apart — outside of the conventional errors — is resolved when these two lovebirds finally figure it out. “Parenthood” was never about the easy answers, even if it often assured us things would be okay. That’s Joel and Julia in a nutshell, and we couldn’t be happier to have watched it play out.

Astro City has been on a roll of strong, characterfocused work as Kurt Busiek and his guest artists have been telling one-shot origins or spotlight issues for the various heroes of this universe. In this issue we meet Marguerite Li and find out how the video game she’s been developing is linked to American Chibi. It’s all fun and a bit silly, but underneath all of that is a wonderful heart that Busiek has been putting into all of these origins. Joe Infurnari and Alex Sinclair handle the art and colors for this one, and the pair should be commended for how well they shift from the real world to the chibi world. It’s a transition that is done perfectly to distinguish the two worlds and adds to an impressive issue. –Levi Final Score: 8.6

by John Robertson Forza 6 feels like a moment of self-reflection for developer Turn 10. Many of the alterations applied here are evidently a reaction to the
negativity that surrounded Forza 5’s scaled-back design, with the focus once again very much geared towards exhaustive depth and an intimidating number of race events. From road tracks to purposebuilt circuits, hatchbacks to Le Mans racers, quick sprints to endurance and online events, there’s no way you’re going to be stuck for something to do. And, yet, despite the volume of content and the sharp precision and attention to detail levelled at everything from visu-
als to audio, Forza 6 can oftentimes feel like the standard bearer of a bygone age. On the one hand it’s a mechanical wonder, but on the other it’s firmly rooted in ideologies and design tropes of the past. It was impossible to fully comprehend at the time, but by comparison it’s easy to see just how much Project Cars has spoilt us. Its open career structure means that you forever feel in control of your own destiny, your time spent learning a new track or car and planning which motorsport route is going to cement your legacy as the kind of racer you want to be. In short: it’s the racing that
reveiw
you’re concentrating on. So much can’t be said for Forza 6, which adheres to a career progression model that now feels archaic and, frankly, obsolete. Rather than focus on your career trajectory, much of your time is instead spent working out which races you need to win in order most rapidly build up the cash required to buy a new car. Subsequently, you can then enter the championship you’ve been waiting to compete in. Repeat until there are no championships left to enter.
It’s a formula that works in that it facilitates driving in many different cars, but it’s not one that leaves much room for motor racing power fantasies. How many professional drivers have to worry about purchasing their own vehicles for an upcoming race? At times it’s easy to think that this is a game about buying and selling assets at the right time more than it is about racing, with a poorly judged purchase setting you back in your quest to race in the best competitions. Turn 10 might have been rightfully stung by the reaction to Forza 5, but the decision to fix things by rehashing an older struc-
ture is poorly judged. For a series that has always doggedly pursued labels of ‘innovation’ and
‘progress’ this kind of conservative, backward step will come as a shock to long time veterans. Thankfully, the core racing housed within this ancient structure of progression is of the highest order - so long as you’re able to stomach the protracted loading times. The handling model is perfectly pitched to allow you to liberally throw the car around the track, removing much of the stress when it comes to getting behind the wheel of that all-powerful supercar for the first time. There’s a raw, guttural sensation to tearing through a corner in a higher end road car such as a BMW M3 with the assists turned off - the rear tyres screaming
for grip as you carefully feather the throttle in an effort to prevent the rear end fish tailing out too far.

The Exam System Is Flawed
W
e’ve all done it before, not everyone but most of us have, “chill” the entire semester then open certain parts of your textbook for the first time a few days before the exam and do just about enough to pass, maybe even pass well. Repeat this for a few years and you’ll be deemed ready to work in the desired profession. This to me is the first element of a flawed tertiary education system. Tertiary education is expensive, like a lot of things in life people want to see value for money and many would argue that the degree certificate and the opportunities it presents to a graduate are of great value for the thousands of dollars invested by parents and sponsors. The idea is simple, in a perfect world lecturers are meant to prepare thoroughly for each lecture they will deliver and students are meant to attend, sit attentively, take notes and study the material well in advance. The reality is however this, lecturers regurgitate notes they prepared years ago, then basically proceed to read them out in lectures. Whether the students have understood is not his or her problem, he’ll probably say, “this is university, I expect you to be more attentive”. Well, the second reality is that a lot of the students actually don’t attend lectures and those that do are either day dreaming or outright sleeping, leaving only a few who actually pay attention and take notes. Most of us fall into the day dreaming category, walking into the lecture room only to count down the minutes until we are released. We then let the work pile up, enjoying life before studying frantically two weeks before exams, again not everyone but most. Now I ask, are the thousands of dollars being paid to colleges justified if this is how the system truly functions?
SEPT 2015. CM. Page 34
Passing can be a talent, you may not attend class, be good at your work or understand it better than the next guy, but if you are blessed with certain qualities such as for example writing fast and a good memory, you’ll pass most of the time. Think of the number of times your hand has gone numb in the middle of a sentence in an exam or instances where you have remembered something 5 minutes after the invigilator has said stop, not because you haven’t studied or worked as hard as the other person, but because you lack the qualities required to be good at an exam. When the results come out, you’ll be judged to be inferior to the guy who can’t communicate with others or think imaginatively, but what was able to regurgitate the textbook faster than you. Exams are basically a test to see how much stuff you can learn and then how quickly you can write it down, does this justify the thousands being paid? Many of you will accept the above points as true but will doubt that there is a better way than the “Read in two weeks and regurgitate in two hours” system. The current system is
probably the easiest and most convenient, but it is flawed in that we are obliged to sit alone at desks every year end to prepare for a world where we need to work with other people. The bottom line is that you can’t test a bunch of individuals, with different backgrounds, characteristics and qualities with the same means. It is thus the easiest but not the most effective way of educating youths. A better system would be one where lecturers are attentive to the needs of each individual, (YES every single one of them), they are not paid to simply read out notes that are a couple of years old. The students assessed by task completion with all resources available to them, which encourages more interaction than lectures. Then they will truly be value for money invested in tertiary education.

It’s Time To Put Students First
T
he previous Students Representative Council has been a disaster for our beloved NUST. In twelve short months, it has wrecked our spirits, saddled our friends with hopelessness of ever being adequately represented, and given the institution a general bad image in the press—as if the greatest university in the country needs all that negative image labeling when in fact it is a land of opportunity and freedom, which we were before President Ndou. Now, NUST looks like a broken university—stripped of decent student leaders, stripped of our hard earned SRC funds (we all pay US $5 towards financing the SRC), stripped of our respect as the student body at the best tertiary institution in the the author of this article contributed on condition of facelessness and anonimity
NUST looks like a broken university— void of decent student leaders to talk about country. And what does President Ndou do about it? You guessed right, nothing that puts the whole student body at an advantage. Instead we’ve had some final year students fail to right their final year examinations and graduate. Students in the surrounding neighborhoods live in constant fear of muggings. Did you know that the previous semester towards exams, we were averaging about 3 cases of muggings per week?

It’s time we restored our pride as the student body of the greatest university in this country. We say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, SOKWANELE, ZVAKWANA!!!!!!!! It’s time the student body united under one common goal, better welfare of all NUST students. It’s time we stopped voting in youth leaders from national political parties, as they don’t have the students at heart in their terms of office but their own personal political ambitions and to amass wealth financed

Dysfunctional Relationships Is Your Relationship Dysfunctionally Awesome?
P
Ryan McKee – AskMen.com lain ol’ dysfunctional relationships run the gambit between pathetic and tragic. Either the couple is too lazy or scared to leave, or there’s an imbalance of power that makes the situation unhealthy or even dangerous. Dysfunctional relationships should be avoided at all costs. Pay attention to warning signs and get yourself or your loved ones out of them. However, relationships that are dysfunctional awesome can be, well, awesome. It’s some of the most fun you can have in dating. You’ll act like a f*cking a-hole and it’s totally okay (for a period of time.) These relationships won’t last. Shooting stars only burn bright for so long. Either they devolve into actual dysfunctional relationships or, more rarely, evolve into relatively healthy ones. You can’t plan for these, nor seek them out. Writing “looking for dysfunctional awesome” on your dating profile will only make you look crazy and yield crazy results. All you can do is recognize when you’re in one and enjoy the wild ride. Here are 9 signs you’re relationship is dysfunctional awesome. Now, most normal couples will present one or two of these some of the time, but a truly dysfunctional awesome couple will show many of them most of the time. . You Fight Daily, But Laugh About It Afterward he only thing you can agree on is you never agree. Your idea of mixing things up is arguing at the grocery store instead of at home. where I’m going with this… . You Lose Days he time might be lost to partying and your vice of choice, but it doesn’t have to be the only reason. You may lose days in bed together or in a co-dependent sloth-like state in front of pizza boxes and Netflix. Either way, you haven’t gone to school or work and you DGAF. You even missed your fantasy football draft for her and that used to be your Christmas day. . You Don’t Remember If Your Friends Are Avoiding You Or If You Just Haven’t Called Them Back omewhere in the back of your head, you remember your friends being pissed about you ditching them for this new girl. You’re just having so much fun that you can’t be bothered with maintaining a budget. . She Scares The Sh*t Out Of You here’s an old quote, “Do one thing every day that scares you.” With this girl, you’re taking that recommendation literally. At Least Once A Week, You Tell Yourself It’s Time To Leave Her his might be true for normal dysfunctional relationships too, but those people don’t think about leaving because they’re having too much fun. All the fighting, all the money, all the partying, all the days you’ve “forgotten” to workout and eat healthily… it adds up and you promise that tonight is the last night.
