The world is getting international, and now we are able to taste other countries’ foods even though we do not go to other countries. Among a lot of foods, we will look through foreign desserts. There are a few desserts I want to introduce: Crème brûlée, Tiramisu, and Castella. First of all, have you heard about “Crème brûlée”? This is a dessert from France. It consists of rich custard cream as a base and harden caramelized sugar as a top layer. Spain and England also have similar desserts, but this recipe is made by Alain Sailhac who is a French chef from 1982. The feature of this dessert is the warm custard cream and cold caramelized sugar layer are harmonized by contrasting textures. The second dessert I want to introduce is Tiramisu. This dessert is from Italy, which has coffee-flavored layers that are a mixture of eggs, cocoa, sugar, coffee, and mascarpone cheese. The origin of Tiramisu is unclear. The origin of the word “Tiramisu” is the combination of the Italian words “tirare” which means
pull or lift, “mi” which means me, and “su” which means high or up. So “Tiramisu” means “lift me up,” that means “feel better” or “invigorate.” Tiramisu has cacao and coffee that has caffeine, eggs, sugar, and mascarpone cheese make people feel good. Last, Castella (Kasutera) is a Japanese sponge cake which consists of eggs, sugar, flour, and starch syrup. Castella’s origin began when it was brought by Portugal missionaries to Khyshu which is the southern island that consists of Japan. This dessert is really soft, and texture is really chewy because of starch syrup added to moist cake. Have you guys tried any desserts among those three? How about trying those foreign desserts today? You will enjoy them, and they will make your day better!

t’s the end of winter, the weather is just about to turn back to brighter, longer days. Everyone is itching to clean up and clean out. Here are some tips to help you get started cleaning up and starting fresh. Clean out your closet! We tend to hang on to things we don’t wear any more and it takes up valuable space! Grab a friend to help you go through your old clothes and take the things you don’t wear anymore to Goodwill. Someone else will be able to get use out of them and you’ll have so much more space. Clean out your car! If you’re like me, you might be guilty of throwing everything in your car and not looking back. If this is the case, take an hour or two and get to cleaning. Grab a buddy and stay motivated! Don’t forget to get all those empty water bottles! If you feel like splurging, take your car to one of the local car washes and polish it off!

Clean off your desk! Sometimes its easy to let paper, homework, sticky notes, books, etc. build up on your workspace. If that’s the case then take some time to organize! File folders can be helpful in organizing all those loose papers and that can help your desk stay organized in the future. You know what old people say? An organized desk equals an organized mind. Rearrange your room! Maybe you need to clean your room, and change up to keep it fresh! Take some time and grab a friend to help you rearrange your furniture to make your room seem brand new. This will help you feel more in control and organized, and also give you a chance to realize everything that you own that might have been hidden!

Mardi  Gras:  Behind  the  Scenes By Catie McCraw
In  1984,  the  Kerns  family,  created  Mardi  Gras  World,  and  it  became  a  tourist attraction  for  people  to  see  how  Mardi  Gras  Yloats  are  created.  Locals  from  New  Orleans  send  in a  blueprint  of  what  they  imagine  their  Yloat  to  be  and  the  employees  begin  working.  The employees  build  the  structure,  with  chicken  wire  and  then  papier  mache  the  form,  and  then  the  Yloat  is  moved  over  to the  painters.  The  painters  paint  it  white  and  then  once  dried  they’ll  add  basic  colors  and  Yine details  to  the  Yloat.

#OUR DURANT by Catie McCraw
#MyDurant  becomes  #OurDurant
For the past four months Durant citizens have rallied together to win $500,000 to help
build a better Main Street. Durant held the last and biggest rally at the Choctaw Event Center. We cheered and hollered while we waited to hear if we won or not. At 6:30pm they played a video and Amanda Brinkman announced that Searcy, Arkansas won. Durant was shocked. However, we were told we were still receiving $500,000 dollars thanks to Rural Enterprise Inc. and starting in August they will interview/choose businesses to redo and help out. People were excited for this opportunity and were willing to put in a ton of effort to win.
Earlier, on January 15th the Small Business Revolution crew and Amanda Brinkman
came to Durant to visit and speak to our small local businesses. Previously, T-shirts, buttons, posters, murals, and even cut outs of Amanda Brinkman and Ty Pennington were created to spread the word. In the evening, Stephanie Gardner and a group of people organized a rally at SOSU’s Student Union. The campus was packed with Durant High, Durant Middle, Durant Intermediate, and Durant Elementary school students. The loop was flooded with Southeastern’s dance team, band, athletes, art students, undergrads, and alumni. Inside the Union there were tons of people on each floor of the Union. There wasn’t enough space to move. It was shoulder to shoulder in there. There were more than 2,500 people at the rally. This rally was the beginning of the community becoming a team. Once we found out that we made the Top 6 we all had to become professional social media users and posters.
We got shout-outs from Reba, Blake Shelton, and former University of Oklahoma
football coach, Barry Switzer. We had public schools voting from California and people voting from Bangladesh. The word got out to vote #MyDurant. Voting was an important part to win and citizens of Durant showed their pride for their town. Voting ended and then we had to wait a week to hear if Durant won.
So Durant doesn’t get to be on television, but we still get to improve our main street
which was the main goal. Our town grew closer together, supported each other, and created many good memories together.
