& Barbecue

With little noise or fanfare, a blending of fire services serving the communities of New Norway, Ferintosh and Edberg occurred on January 1, 2022. A terrific new fire hall was built just off the pavement at Highway 609 and RR 211 (just east of the Ferintosh landfill) to accommodate firefighters, support staff and house the combined roster of gear and fire fighting equipment.

On Saturday, April 9 from 12 noon to 4 p.m., the fire hall will be open for public viewing. You will be able to talk to the members and get a look at the equipment they use in protecting citizens in their 900 square kilometres of service and rescue area. This day will also feature an especially important barbecue fundraiser. Your purchase of a burger, hot dog, water or soft drink will allow the local Fire Fighters Association to purchase and utilize matching station wear and to update articles of personal protective gear.

Stretch, breathe, ground–can’t hurt and may do good You know the world is turbulent when “the world” comes up during a medical appointment. After years of stability, my blood pressure has recently shot up. I was surprised. As far as I could tell, I wasn’t upset or stressed at that moment. I’d just had a pleasant 45 minutes in the waiting area, reading a book I was enjoying. I’d actually enjoyed the 45-minute wait, peacefully reading my book. So why had my blood pressure suddenly shot up to higher than it has been for years? “Maybe it’s because of all that’s going on in the world,” my physician said. She may have been right. So–in case you too are feeling a little more stressed than was typical, say, two years ago or even two months ago–here are three practices that might help you feel a bit calmer, at least physically, at least for a few minutes… Disclaimer: I’m not any kind of expert–just sharing three practices I’ve stumbled across that seem helpful for me. ***

Stretch. Do whatever you can do to stretch every part of your body. If you can, lift your arms as high as they can reach–and then reach a bit higher. Stretch your arms to the sides as far as you can, and then a bit further. If you’re able, bend down to touch as close as you can get to your toes, and then push up your back so you’re stretching all the muscles from your shoulders to your bum. Sit in a chair and stretch out your legs as far as you can. Move your feet forward and backward so you stretch both the front and back of your legs. Move your legs apart and together–like scissors–so you stretch the inside and outside of your legs. Then stand up and stretch your whole body in any way that feels good to you. ***

Ground. Imagine or pretend that you have roots that go down and down and down into the earth. Imagine those roots stretching out and out and out. Imagine those roots are like the roots of a banyan tree, which can go on for miles. Imagine that your roots can take in that earth energy that grows plants and gives life to animals. Imagine you can even feel yourself taking in the life-giving energy of the earth, and resting on the earth. ***

Breathe. I know, you’re already breathing or you couldn’t be reading this! But here’s a specific breathing technique that may help you reconnect with your physical body and distract your mind from troubling thoughts. First, breathe in really deeply, right down to your abdomen. Hold that in-breath while you mentally count to four (or six or eight if you really want to get into it). Then breathe out, slowly and completely, and hold that empty space while you mentally count to four. While you’re holding that empty space, begin to relax your body, from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet. Intentionally slow down your breathing and continue that pattern. Breathe in and hold, breathe out and hold, while you keep relaxing your body. ***

These exercises won’t change what’s happening in your personal world or the larger world. But they will give your mind something to do besides worry. They may also help you feel calmer and maybe even stronger. That in turn will enable you to deal more assuredly and effectively with whatever you need to deal with in your world. Can’t do harm, and may even do some good. Happy coping! ***

I’d love to hear from you! If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com. I’ll happily reply within one business day.

MP Kurek’s statement that crime levels in Canada remain high is absolutely correct. His simplistic narrative that it is due to the Liberals “soft stance on crime” and overreach on firearms legislation is misleading, disingenuous and outright wrong. Let’s take a detailed, historical look on the root causes of Canada’s excessive crime scenario dating back some 20 years. PM Harper’s drastic budget cuts to the RCMP (ably assisted by Premier Kenney during the 2012-15 timeframe) d ra st ic a l ly reduc ed protective services to Canadians. Budget cuts have dire consequences; e.g., had the Moncton RCMP detach ment received carbines, body armour and training as recommended by the Mayerthorpe Inquiry, there probably would have been one Mountie killed, not three killed. Quite possibly, the current RCMP inquiry in Nova Scotia may have roots in underfunding as well. The day of the attack on Capital Hill by a mentally ill (mental illness, another underfunded issue) gunman, the RCMP contingent on duty was about onethird of its normal complement. According to retired Court of Queen’s Bench chief justice, Neil Wittman, as reported by CBC several years ago, A lberta has the fewest federally appointed judges per capita in all of Canada. The Alberta court requested four new judges in 2008, got funding for two in 2014, but needed 13 judges to bring Alberta up to the national level. A nybody in the Camrose area had to suf fer through long court delays? How does it make you feel when alleged criminals are free to walk as a result of excessive delays in coming to trial? “If I sound frustrated, it’s because I am,” said Wittmann. “ The previous federal gover nment (Ha r per) wouldn’t even authorize the appointment of

the number of judges that the Alberta government had, by statute, said they require. In my opinion that is constitutionally impermissible.” T he Conser vative model that underfunds essential services to the point that the system breaks down opening the door to privatization just does not work. It makes one wonder what is the motivation behind Premier Kenney’s headlong rush to replace the RCMP by a more costly provincial police force. Mr. Kurek, ineptitude by both the Liberals and the Conservatives results in high crime levels; your partisan (and false) narrative is cou nter productive to achieving the goal of reducing crime. It is timely to support adequate funding of police services complemented by financial support to the courts. Will you provide that support with your vote? Lynn Clark, Camrose Better education

“ We made a commitment to A lber ta parents that we would have strong foundational knowledge presented to our children, that we would have rigour in the curriculum, and we make no apologies for that,” said Adrianna LaGra nge, December 13, 2021. But LaGrange should definitely apologize for what passes as “foundational knowledge” in the draft curr iculum. She should apologize, withdraw the curriculum and restart the process. The content in the K nowledge columns of the draft curriculum is not important foundational knowledge. Too often the content is not developmentally appropriate. In some cases, high school topics have been pushed down into elementary. When the content is meaningless for young children, they will be memorizing nonsense for the test and then forgetting it. Pointless and stressful. Critics point out that what is deemed “essential knowledge” is too often just trivia.

There are many documented factual errors, especially in Music and Social Studies. Some of the “content” in various subjects was plag ia r ized of f i nt ernet sources, including Wi k ip e d ia . ht tps:// alberta-curriculumanalysis.ca/analysis-ofplagiarism-in-the-draftalberta-k- 6-curriculum/. LaGra nge asser ts that this content is “strong fou ndationa l knowledge that will make our students successful”. But the carelessness in selecting the “ fou ndationa l k nowledge” to be learned and tested is outrageous. This is to be our curriculum for the next 20 or 30 years? Shameful. In addition, some of the content in the Knowledge column seems to be background information for teachers. In ELAL do students really have to memorize the criteria that define Tier 2 sight words? Teachers have been asking for clarification on how to use the “Knowledge” columns since March 2021. Do they have to wait for the newly ma ndat ed sta nda rdized tests in Grade 1 and 2 to arrive before they know what has to be taught? Time and again critics have said that there is too much “knowledge” content. To test that, one must pilot the curriculum for at least a full school year in many classrooms. Instead, most school boards declined to pilot any of it and those that did were limited to six months of piloting. Six months. There must be a full year of piloting to determine what is reasonable and doable when it comes to the amount of content to be covered. T h is c u r r ic u lu m is a disaster that will harm our children, not educate them. Minister LaGrange should most def i n it ely apolog ize. Visit https://ditchthedraft.ca/ for more information. Joe and Georgina Orcheski, of Round Hill, sold the bull for $31,000 to Mike Kluzney of Winfield. The Orcheskis later sold a 1996 bull calf at $17,000, tying a Canadian price record for bison bull calves. • Loveigh Jeglum, Treasurer, and Mary Norton, Director, of The Family Thrift Shop presented donations to two local charities. Local residents assist Ukraine families By Murray Green

Camrose families and churches are supporting efforts to assist Ukraine refugees to relocate to the local area. “I came to Edmonton because I knew a few friends,” said Olena Kardash, who has been in Camrose for nine years. She came from Ukraine to Edmonton in 2013. After meeting a friend, Andreas Derksen, a couple of months later, she followed him to Camrose because he had family here. Andreas grew up in Germany and moved to Camrose in 2007. “I used a government program for an open work permit between Ukraine and Canada to move here. I could work wherever I wanted for a year. I started as a salesperson in West Edmonton Mall and worked for four months, then moved to Camrose,” she recalled. Olena not only wants to bring her parents over to Camrose to be safe, she wants to help three other families make the move to Canada. “Camrose is an awe-

some place to live. I didn’t think that at first when I got here. I came here from a bigger city with half million people and Camrose was too small. Edmonton was big enough where everything was moving, my type of city. But, I made friends here and had support and that is all that mattered,” shared Olena. “I came to Canada to seek opportunities for my future. It was tough times for my parents because they have been through so many things in life. I just want a better future for my family. I want to be able to support them when the time comes,” said Olena. She lived in Mykolaiz, near Odessa, a part of Ukraine that has been under attack. “I am worried about my relatives. I want to help three families. My parents left Ukraine and are in Moldova. They have applied for visas and are going through the process. My best friend from my school years and her 17-month-old son are now in Italy. Hopefully, they will be here in three or four

weeks. There is another family, my brother’s family. Unfortunately, he is not allowed to leave Ukraine. Any male between 18 and 60 are not allowed to leave due to marshal law. His family is staying with him, but I’m still trying to bring them here,” shared Olena. The Camrose Refugee Centre wants to support four families of Ukrainian refugees. It consists of a group of churches and service organizations. They will be fundraising, collecting furniture, household goods and providing support in various ways after the families arrive.

“This situation is as difficult as you can imagine. We have to think how as a community, we can help. There are about four million people fleeing Ukraine. It is huge pressure on Europe. The Canadian government is trying to simplify the process for applying for visas. I’m thinking what they need for the first few months. We need financial support to bring them here. First of all, they need plane tickets, so we are trying to raise $20,000 for tickets for them and places to stay when they get here. I can offer space for my parents, but I don’t have room for everyone,” added Olena. “People have been offering places to stay. But, how long can they stay? They need accommodations and food. We have wonderful people here offering to help. We will need household items, furniture, blankets and things people need every day. We also need a place to store items until they are needed,” she said. “I stumbled upon the Camrose Refugee Centre

by accident and I am hoping we can work together to bring families here.” Camrose Refugee Centre assists people from other countries to relocate in the area. “Any businesses and community groups that would like to participate are welcome. We are open to supporting more families if we are asked,” said Yvonne Myrehaug, Camrose Refugee Centre volunteer coordinator. Monetary donations can be made to the Camrose Refugee Centre’s Ukrainian Refugee Fund through Messiah Lutheran Church at offering@ messiahcamrose.ca or to the Camrose Refugee Centre Ukrainian Refugee Fund through the Battle River Community Foundation, Box 1122 Camrose, AB, T4V 4E7. Donations of furniture and household goods can be made by contacting Yvonne at 780-679-3727. Anyone wishing to become involved can also make inquiries at the same number.

Blues-country sensation Russell deCarle and his band will be returning to the Bailey Theatre for a night of blues on Saturday, April 9 starting at 7:30 p.m. “It means a lot to me to be touring in Alberta for a few different reasons. One is that it has become a second home of sorts since coming out there to play with Prairie Oyster in 1986. We had many enjoyable tours and made lifelong friends and fans, and happily that continues for me to this day. My previous tour before the pandemic was in Alberta, the fall of 2019, so it seems fitting that this is my first tour since then,” shared deCarle. “I can’t name a favourite song. They are all a part of my story, so I’m emotionally connected to everything I do whether it’s mine or an obscure cover song. I went for awhile not doing any Prairie Oyster material when I started doing solo shows, but I slowly started adding ones that I had written. They have since taken on a new life for me, and the audience getting to hear them in a more intimate singer-songwriter setting is special,” explained deCarle. “I have actually played in Camrose quite a lot over the years, at the Jamboree with Prairie Oyster three or four times and on my own when I hosted the songwriters’ tent for two consecutive years. I also had a wonderful show at the Bailey on my own a few years back, where I was joined

by the legendary Calvin Volrath, one of a score of fantastic Alberta musicians I’ve played and become friends with over the years. I’m really looking forward to my return engagement,” added deCarle, on his return to the city. “I do love playing these smaller theatres, although when asked what I prefer, smaller or larger venues, as long as I’m getting to play, it doesn’t seem to make a difference if it’s 20 people or 20,000, we play the same. And as much as it sounds like a cliché, I am truly having the time of my life and career and I am just happy to be there,” laughed deCarle. “I will be joined on this tour by two stellar musicians: my longtime compadre, the great Steve Briggs on guitar, and the fabulous Russ Boswell on bass.” He has evolved musically across several genres. “About 20 years ago, I started working seriously at playing guitar, learning some jazz standards and a host of other things. This had a big influence on my songwriting and gave me the musical vehicle to deliver them. I also started working with my accompanist Steve, who is not only a great guitar player, but also a great teacher, and he has had a profound influence on my playing. “For decades, people were asking for a solo record, but I never thought I was ready and the band always satisfied the musical part of my life,” said deCarle.

City promoting good walking By Lori Larsen

The geese are flying overhead and the grass is starting to show. It’s time to put your winter boots away, get your walking shoes out and get up and go. Proven to be one of the best exercises for most people, walking is easy, accessible, fun and, most of all, extremely beneficial for a person’s health. The benefits of walking include: • Improved heart health • Lowers risk of some diseases • Strengthened bones and muscles • Easy on joints • Helps maintain a healthy weight • Increases feel-good endorphins • Great way to socialize • Provides fresh air and doses of natural Vitamin D when done outside • Increases energy levels • Improves sleep • Gets you out of the house. The City of Camrose is going one step further in encouraging residents to get walking with a Move into Walking program. The program will teach participants proper walking alignment intended to ensure walkers are increasing effective functioning of the body and reducing the risk of injury. Classes are held on Mondays and Wednesdays until April 27, from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. on the indoor walking track located at the City of Camrose Recreation Centre, 4412-56 Street. Participants are asked to bring a water bottle, exercise mat and thera

bands (4- to 5-foot length, light to medium resistance). “People are generally less active in today’s lifestyle,” noted Move Into Walking instructor Janet Greer. “The work and home environments are

in a decrease in both the availability and engagement in physical activity and exercise.” According to Greer, research suggests that musculoskeletal pain is more common now than it was 40 years ago, which

“Something as basic and simple as walking, enjoyed by many, is an activity that could bring discomfort, pain and even injury. The physical movement is being performed and repeated over and over again on a walk, as we know. If the

body is in poor postural alignment, the repetition of these dysfunctional movements and muscle imbalances will result in joint stress, pain and injury.” Greer described the Move into Walking program as one where the participant develops a con-

scious awareness of their physical movement. “Participants will be learning about their movement and understanding how they are moving, such as the position of their head, shoulders, spine, torso, hips, legs, knees, ankles and feet.” Gre er f u r t her explained that the goal of the program is to help participants develop an understanding of physical movement generally and their own movement specifically. “They will be shown which of their current movement patterns are working well and which are not, and anywhere there is a lack of movement.” Information and instruction will be provided to bring dysfunction to function, inefficient movement to more efficient movement, and activate muscles that are not being used. As the weather becomes more promising for outdoor walking, Camrose offers over 30 kilometres of interconnected, paved, multiuse trails and many other shale passages. Residents and guests are reminded, however, to abide by the trail etiquette and safety procedures for the sake of all users. For more information on trail etiquette and safety, visit the City of Camrose website at https://www. camrose.ca/en/living-here/ trails.aspx?_mid_=34284. For more information on the Walking class, contact City of Camrose Recreation Program coordinator Christine McCord by telephone 780-672-9949 or by email at recreation@ camrose.ca.

Cloutier added power to Plymouth coupe By Murray Green

Jerry Cloutier owns a 1937 Plymouth coupe. “I originally brought this body from Philadelphia. It took me six years to finish the car and it was fully restored in 2016. I had some help along the way,” said Jerry. “It has a Keith Black 528 hemi racing engine in it. The car is fun to drive and I go across Alberta to various car shows. I just like to have some fun with it,” shared Jerry. “A good friend of mine, Nathan Doerksen, is a taekwon-do instructor, so I came to visit and train with him at the same time as the car show. I made it a good weekend in Camrose,” said Jerry. Plymouth was a brand of automobiles produced by Chrysler Corporation and its successor DaimlerChrysler. The brand was launched in 1928 to compete in what was then described as the lowpriced market segment that was dominated by Chevrolet and Ford. “I put a roll cage in the car. Originally, I was going to race this car, but after putting the engine in and painting it, I thought the car was too nice to race. That’s how it got to be my show car,” admitted Jerry. Plymouth cars were marketed primarily in the United States. “I have always been a fan

FUN FACTS

By April 1933, the Dodge division’s Model DP chassis, with a 112-inch (284.5-cm) wheelbase, was put under the PC body with DP front fenders, hood, and radiator shell. The model designation was advanced to PD. The PC was redesigned to look similar to the PD and became the Standard Six. It had been the Plymouth Six at the introduction and was sold through to the end of 1933, but in much lower numbers. In 1937, Plymouth (along with the other Chrysler makes) added safety features such as flat dash boards with recessed controls and the back of the front seat padded for the rear seat occupants. The flathead six started with the 1933 Model PC and stayed in the Plymouth until the 1959 models. For much of its life, Plymouth was one of the top-selling American automobile brands; it, together with Chevrolet and Ford, was commonly referred to as the low-priced three marques in the American market. Plymouth almost surpassed Ford in 1940 and 1941 as the second-most popular make of automobiles in the United States.

and the shape of the car. I purchased the car from the original owner. The car sat on his farm for years, so he was glad to see it restored similar to what it was. The original colour was black, so I changed that. I like green because it looks good on this car. It is the colour I wanted,” said Jerry. The Plymouth De Luxe and Special De Luxe were full-sized automobiles which were produced by American manufacturer Plymouth during the 1933-42 and 1946-50 model years. “I like the engine because it is rare and pushes 1,000 horsepower. It has power, but is street legal so I can drive it to whereever I want to go, even if it is from gas station to gas station,” laughed Jerry. “Fun to drive, just hard on fuel.” It was an upscale alternative to the Plymouth Six (1933-34), Business Six (1935-38) and Roadking (1938-40). There were two, twodoor coupes: the two-seater Business Coupe and the

Rumble-Seat Coupe, which had two inside seats and two more in the rumble seat. Convertible versions included the two-door convertible coupe and the four-door convertible sedan.

In October 1937, the Dodge D5 was replaced by the Series D8, while the junior line models (for export and the Canadian market) were badged D9 and D10 for 1938.

First reading approved to DARP changes By Lori Larsen

During the March 21 City of Camrose regular council meeting, council approved first reading to Bylaw 3213-22 amending the Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan (DARP) to better reflect the possibility of future development while maintaining the historical integrity of the Downtown area. Following discussion during the March 21 Committee of Whole meeting, City of Camrose Planning and Development manager Aaron Leckie presented Bylaw 3213-22 to amend the City of Camrose DARP Plan Bylaw 3018-18, removing the requirement that new corner buildings be built to the property line in certain areas. “New corner buildings would still be required to be built to property line on 50th Street (Main Street) excluding the northeast and northwest corners of 48th Avenue and 50th

Street, and excluding all of Precinct F: Sparling Mixed Use Historic Village,” explained Leckie. Several other textual amendments to landscaping and the use of public and private areas are needed to support the above changes. “The changes relaxes the language from ‘shall’ to ‘should’, which means potentially a developer would no longer be required to build to the property line so there could be a set back area,” further explained Leckie. “When it comes to the actual use of that, like how many trees and shrubs, that is a Land Use Bylaw (LUB) regulation so I am proposing to put that into the Land Use Bylaw.” In response to a question posed by councillor Agnes Hoveland during the Committee of Whole meeting asking if there is a specific definition of double-front facing contained within the DARP, Leckie

said there was not anything specifically spelled out in the DARP. “Double fronting in our LUB does talk about fronting and shows a picture of what it is and shows front entrance facing the street. “There are certain things that are not defined and not spelled out. In planning, at least, frontage implies access to those businesses, meaning a building entrance would face the road.” Administration will prepare a report to be presented to the Municipal Planning Advisory Committee and will be holding an open house in an effort to encourage public engagement and feedback and then the bylaw will return to council for second and third reading. For a full list of amendments visit the City’s website at www.camrose.ca or contact planning@camrose.ca.

Crush garners Vanberg Cup By Murray Green

Too many preventable deaths There is an entirely preventable obscenity that is happening across Canada, particularly in BC and Alberta. I am referring to the fact that 2021 saw a dramatic rise in drug overdoses due to an unsafe drug supply. In 2020 and 2021, over 2,500 Albertans died as a result of using unsafe drugs. Tim Parker, Another disturbing fact is Psychology, that although Indigenous University of Alberta peoples make up six per Augustana Campus cent of the province’s population, they accounted for 22 per cent of the overdoses that occurred in 2020. This trend continues in 2022 and will continue unless drugs are legalized to provide users with a safer regulated product. The War on Drugs promulgated in the USA and in Canada is what makes the drugs unsafe. Given that smuggling drugs is illegal, it is easier to smuggle a small volume versus a large volume. Making the drugs more powerful by lacing them with fentanyl and carfentanyl is a way to drastically reduce the volume you need to smuggle. The fact that this makes the drugs much more dangerous doesn’t figure into the overall greed-based enterprise. In addition, those needing drugs must resort to serious crimes because they can’t access the drugs that they need in any other way. Preventing overdoses requires regulation. Alcohol is legal in Canada and its production is strictly regulated. For this reason, I can go into a liquor store with a high degree of trust that when a bottle says it contains 40 per cent alcohol, that’s what it contains. I can buy it without needing to be afraid that a single drink might kill me because it contains fentanyl; I have this trust because production is regulated by the government. One proposal being made by some governments is to decriminalize drugs. While this may improve the situation somewhat, it will not solve the problem of a lethal supply of drugs. Under decriminalization, while users will no longer be criminalized and only fined, the drugs will still be illegal and more importantly, still unregulated. Only legalization and regulation will reduce these preventable deaths resulting from tainted drugs. Unfortunately, the UCP Alberta government doesn’t seem to be receptive to this harm-reduction approach. Instead, they are focusing on recovery from addiction, an approach that does nothing to solve the safe drug issue and the consequent high rate of lethal overdoses. This is mostly because the general attitude is that no politician should be seen to be “soft on drugs”. However, consider how the rate of drug-related crimes would plummet if the government provided safe drugs to drug users. Citizens concerned about drug-related crimes should welcome this reduction. Although there may be a fear that legalization would increase the number of people using drugs, the research findings simply do not support this claim. For people with long-term drug habits, not having a dose leaves them in a very aversive state, complete with very unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Having worryfree access to their next dose would then allow them to focus on other aspects of their life. This could make it possible for them to become contributing members of society, able to pursue their own goals and follow their dreams. There is good evidence from other countries such as Great Britain to support the claim that prescribing legal drugs produces the advantages described above. What is needed is a government that is concerned about those who use drugs and is willing to accept that legalization is the only way to stop the mounting drug overdose deaths. So far, there is little evidence of this happening. In fact, the Alberta government has gone so far as to turn its back on harm reduction initiatives and close the supervised safe injection sites that have been shown to prevent overdoses.

Camrose Crush captured the Vanberg Cup with a 2-1 win in the deciding game of the North Central Senior Hockey League finals. Game five was played in Lacombe on April 2. Brad Trautman scored at the nine-minute mark of the second overtime to win 3-2 in the fourth game of the series. Camrose scored first when defenceman Landon Oslanski found the back of the net. However, Lacombe replied just 38 seconds later to notch the game at 1-1 after 20 minutes. Lacombe scored the only goal of the middle frame on a screened shot from the point. Dillan McCombie garnered the equalizer midway through the third period to force overtime. Crush goalie Connor Dobberthien turned away 42 of 44 shots directed his

way. Camrose peppered Generals goalie Mackenzie Engel with 52 shots. In the third game on March 25, the Crush scored four of the first five goals to take command of the contest early. Dayton Murray and McCombie collected tallies in the first period before Colin Zimmer replied for the Generals. In the middle frame, Camrose scored twice again before Lacombe added another goal. McCombie scored twice to complete his hat trick. RJ Reed added the other two markers. After a Lacombe shorthanded goal, Ryley Bennefield scored on a power play, McCombie notched his fourth (seventh point of the game) and Zaine Walker added to the lead. The generals also added a power play tally. Dobberthien stopped 38 of 42 shots fired his way. Camrose recorded 39 shots on goal.

Kincaid named to AJHL all-star squad By Murray Green

Camrose Kodiaks defenceman Robert Kincaid was named to the south division Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) allstar team. Players are selected to the respective rosters through a voting process completed by the general managers and coaches in the league. Goalie Andreai ProctorRamirez of the Canmore Eagles, defencemen Zach Bookman of the Brooks Bandits and Kincaid of the Kodiaks, forwards Ryan McAllister of the Brooks Bandits, TJ Hughes of Brooks Bandits and Rieger Lorenz of the Okotoks Oilers made the team. AJHL scoring champion and league MVP McAllister was a unanimous selection. All four finalists for the MVP Award were

selected to the AJHL allleague teams (McAllister, Thornton, Rasmussen and Lorenz). Bookman won the AJHL’s Outstanding Defenceman Award after being nominated alongside Kincaid. The all-league rosters include 10 players committed to an NCAA college or university including Kincaid, who is intending to go to the University of Maine next fall. The Kodiaks announced award presentations to Carson Whyte, City Police Community Service Award; Ryan Sullivan, MVP; Noah Alvarez, Rookie of the Year; Callum Gau, Most Dedicated Award; Carson Brisson, Scholastic Player of the Year; Robert Kincaid, Top Defenceman; and Mathieu Gautier, Most Improved.

Dewey John Holt

December 27, 1925 - March 24, 2022 Dewey John Holt left this world on March 24, 2022 at the age of 96. He was born on December 27, 1925 near Ferintosh, Alberta on the family farm, the middle child of Garfield and Lola Holt. He attended Poplar Bluff School for his elementary years, and then Wetaskiwin High School. He was married to Eunice Tennis, his high school sweetheart and best friend, on July 6, 1948. They lived on the Jim Lock farm until May 1950 and then purchased the Bjorgren farm across the road, where they would enjoy fine views for many decades. Eunice and Dewey farmed together, raised their daughter Kathy and took her on many adventures, extended hospitality, and enjoyed annual vacations in the RV and travelling – particularly after semi-retirement. Their vacation property, however, was a woodland cabin on the back 40, where they enjoyed many picnics and cowboy coffees with friends and family. Dewey enjoyed going back to his farm to stay over, as he kept the “home place” as long as he possibly could and lived there for a few summers while in his 90s. He continued to garden, growing lots of potatoes and sky-high sunflowers. Dewey loved the outdoors: fishing, hunting, and – back in the day – “ski-dooing” (this translated to scootering in his later years). He was a big fan of animals (especially his final cat, Perky), birds, and trees. Dewey made a remarkable fresh oyster soup at Christmas. He loved fresh garden tomatoes, popped gallons of popcorn in his lifetime, and was happy to help with pickles. He enjoyed old-time music and the hymns that he and Eunice spent their lives singing. Dewey outlived his closest friends more than once, but kept making new ones. He was a real talker and had a wealth of stories, both hilarious and tragic, that he was happy to share with anyone. Once when travelling in Alaska, he discovered that the guy he was chatting to in a washroom was a distant relative. He felt things deeply, was troubled by injustice, and frequently played the spoons with the band at the farmers’ market. His faith was important to him, and he maintained his connection to his rural home church, Calvary Lutheran, throughout his lifetime. Dewey is survived by his daughter Kathy (Kate) Holt and sonin-law Michael Peng; brother Earl Holt; sisters-in-law Reta Holt and Lorraine Tennis; and many much-loved friends, relatives, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by Eunice in 2014; siblings Bill Holt, Tillie Bloomingdale, and Herb Holt. A celebration of Dewey’s life will be held at Calvary Lutheran Church, R.R. #2, Wetaskiwin on May 25, 2022 at 1 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Canadian Lutheran World Relief – Ukraine Emergency Appeal or Calvary Lutheran Church – Svea Cemetery Fund. David Arnold Steiner

October 6, 1954 - March 25, 2022 David Arnold Steiner of Camrose, Alberta, passed away on Friday, March 25, 2022, at the age of 67 years. David Steiner, loving husband, father and friend, left this earth much too soon, after a short and tragic illness. His passing will leave a hole in the lives of the many who knew and loved him. Born and raised in Camrose, he spent nearly his entire adult life in the city. He was a hardworking man who didn’t shirk responsibility; his working life spanned four decades with CN Rail. A devoted and caring family man, his happiest times were spent in the company of family and friends, especially children. Energetic in his youth, recreation in his later years was spent quietly in his garage doing woodworking projects, and he took some pride in building a well-equipped woodshop for his retirement. Generous and patient, he was always available to help a friend in need. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of nearly 50 years, Janice Steiner; and their children, son Craig (Shelby) and grandchildren Chase, Kaylee and Ayden, and son Kent. He will also be greatly missed by his siblings Cathy (Brent), Karen (Sid), Susan (Wayne), Lorie (John), Debbie, Alan and Jayne (Warren). Dave was predeceased by his parents Tony and Margaret; and brother Randy. A Celebration of Life has been held. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in David’s memory may be made to the Arthritis Society of Alberta or the Alberta Diabetes Foundation. “David, we all have memories to last a lifetime.” To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

BRCF provides funds for seniors By Lori Larsen

The Battle River Community Foundation recently awarded $5,425 in grants to SOS Camrose (Service Options for Seniors). The grants are from income from the Sue and By Reesor Fund and the Foundation’s Community Funds. The grants provide $425 in discretionary funding to be used by SOS in the area most needed, and $5,000 to support additional staffing for the Outreach Program. “The SOS Program is the grateful recipient of many generous community donations,” commented SOS program coordinator Christina Rehmann. “As a non-profit organization, it is literally our lifeblood.” Since 2004, SOS has been helping seniors with everything from supported access to financial programs, medical transportation and free income tax filing to troubleshooting aids to daily living and providing an elder safe haven and even food security. “The Reesors have always given generously of their time, their expertise and funds,” added Rehmann. “It’s folks like the Reesors who make our community strong, dynamic and inspiring in which to live. We are honoured

to be recipients of our community’s generosity just as we are honoured to be able to continue to serve seniors and their champions in Camrose and County.” The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support organizations such as this in East Central Alberta, which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds are

kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995, the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $7,900,000 to support charitable activities in the Battle River Region. Central Agencies Home of the Week

West end two-storey home

By Lori Larsen

No need to worry about renovations with this brand new twostorey home located in the west end of Camrose near shopping, restaurants, parks and the golf course. A quaint front porch greets you and your guests as you enter the home. Classic grey-toned laminate flooring and crisp white finishes add to the already bright airy feeling you get from the open concept floor plan. A large front window floods the living area with natural light which streams into the dining and kitchen area. Soft coloured maple cabinets, striking stylish grey-toned backsplash tile, stainless steel appliances and granite countertops give the kitchen a clean modern vibe. Plenty of cabinet space and a fantastic pantry offer tons of storage. The stunning laminate flooring continues into the main floor two-piece powder room and a very convenient main floor laundry area. Upstairs, the family can retreat

I now know how it will all end for me: one of my kids will unplug my life support so they can charge their phone. I went to visit a psychic. I knocked on her front door and she yelled, “Who is it?” So I left. Is an argument between two vegans still called a beef? Four-year-old: “Why do you go to work?” Me: “They pay me a salary.” Four-year-old: “I don’t even like celery.” My husband asked if he had any annoying habits and then got all offended during my PowerPoint presentation. We do not throw away perfectly good food in our house. We put the leftovers in Tupperware, put the Tupperware in the fridge, let it go bad and THEN throw it out. People think I’m crazy when I talk with my cat. What am I supposed to do? Just ignore him when he asks me a question? Exercise for people over 60: Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side. With a five-Ib. potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day you’ll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb. potato bags. Then try 50-lb. potato bags and eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb. potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag. I got thrown out of Jubilee Park after arranging the squirrels by height. They didn’t like me critter sizing. to the three bedrooms, including a primary bedroom with its own private four-piece en suite and walk-in closet, and a four-piece main bathroom. Head out the back to the deck where you can sit and enjoy barbecuing or taking in fresh air. Back alley access gives you plenty of room for parking or building that future garage to your own specifications. With plenty of room for a growing family, this home is located at 700150 Avenue and is priced to sell at $319,900. Why English Is Hard to Learn

We’ll begin with box; the plural is boxes, But the plural of ox is oxen, not oxes. One fowl is a goose, and two are called geese, Yet the plural of moose is never called meese.

You may find a lone mouse or a house full of mice; But the plural of house is houses, not hice. The plural of man is always men, But the plural of pan is never pen. If I speak of a foot, and you show me two feet, And I give you a book, would a pair be a beek? If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth, Why shouldn’t two booths be called beeth? If the singular’s this and the plural is these, Should the plural of kiss be ever called keese?

We speak of a brother and also of brethren, But though we say mother, we never say methren. Then the masculine pronouns are he, his, and him; But imagine the feminine ... she, shis, and shim! Al-Karim (Al) Mohamed
