According to The National Council on Pet Population, there are nearly 8 million cats and dogs taken in by animal shelters each year. According to the Humane Society, 25% of the latter are purebreds. One of the leading causes behind this problem is that many owners fail to either spay or neuter their dogs. As a result, millions of homeless pooches find their way to shelters.

The problem is that animal shelters are unable to absorb the inflow. They simply lack the space. Unfortunately, to help curb the issue, millions of canines must be euthanized. In this article, we'll explore three reasons to spay or neuter your pooch.

Reason 1 – Protecting The Community

There are a lot of canines roaming the streets. Left to their own devices, they'll often get into trash bins (spilling them over in the...show more content...

Owners will occasionally neglect neutering because they want to breed their dog. Sometimes, they do it for profit. Other times, they believe that each puppy in the litter will eventually find a home, even if for free. When a suitable home fails to materialize, the owner takes the puppy (or puppies) to a shelter. Breeding should not be considered a hobby; it should be left to professional breeders.

Reason 3 – A More Pleasant And Healthier Pooch

Research has shown that canines which are spayed or neutered typically deal with fewer health problems or behavioral issues. They're less likely to run away, easier to train, and more responsive to their owners. Each of these factors ultimately means that owners enjoy the companionship of a more pleasant pooch.

Today, there are very few reasons to avoid spaying or neutering your dog. The procedure is performed while your pooch is under anesthesia and is a one–time event. Plus, the cost of the operation is reasonable, especially given the advantages of having it performed. If you're hesitant, review the three reasons above. Spaying or neutering is a good idea for you, your dog, and your

Pets. They have an amazing effect on your life. They come in and bring so much joy and happiness. Mama always said he was an absolute little terrorist because he was pissed about his name and wanted to prove his manhood. It was a normal day, but a day that changed our family's life forever, we got up that morning excited that we were on summer vacation. Finally, we were able to go outside, ride our bikes and spend nothing but uninterrupted kid time, but only until those street lamps came on. Once they're on if you aren't in the house consider your ass grass. When we finally made it inside, the house smelled amazing! She smirked and said "how old is he?" my dad would reply with a look that made it obvious that he knew she was low–key pissed off about the whole thing "6 weeks old" she confused by his looks, then asked "what's his breed?" he answered "Pekingese & Peek–a–poo mix". Without missing a beat, my sister and I immediately looked at each other in pure excitement and yelled out his new name in unison "PIKACHU!!" My parents both tickled agree to the awful name their two little girls came up with. WE literally grew up together. He was like the furry, snarling, pain in the butt, little–big brother we never realized we had. Years went by and as we grew, so did he. To tell youa little bit about Pikachu... He grew into his personality very young and like an old dog, became set in his ways. He was bad, sometimes a bully, and other times a sweetheart, with a bad napoleon complex. He would try to attack our parent's legs if they ever tried to whoop us (he often got locked in the bathroom, and we knew at that moment it was every kid for themselves). He hated any male being in the house, including daddy. Where I could lay next to him the whole meal as long as I didn't touch, if dad so much as watched him eat – he'd just snarl and bark, it never phased him though because he's a 6ft 3in man he'd just laugh. I assume it was an alpha–male thing. For such a small dog he was extremely strong and

Persuasive Essay On Dogs

Known as man's best friend, the domestic dog is the greatest pet a person can have. Historically, the canine has been a companion of man for thousands of years. Dogs have become important members in individual's personal lives. They can also be utilized to benefit society as a whole. Dogs should be considered the greatest animal because they can provide health benefits, are able to accomplish unique jobs in society, and have profound meaning for people. When acquiring a dog, many only consider the emotional benefits that they will gain. However, dog ownership is also associated with several physical benefits. Owning a dog promotes an individual's physical health and can inspire them to live more active lives. When compared to non–dog owners, individuals with dogs live longer and more active lives. The active lifestyle that most dogs and their owners engage in, such as participating in walks, provides physical activity for the individual. Increased levels of physical activity help individuals manage their weight and promote heart health. Studies have revealed that dog ownership has been associated with lower levels of cardiovascular disease and death (Larned). Many individuals avoid dogs because they fear they are or will become allergic. However, dogs carry their own unique bacteria, which can have immune boosting benefits for their owners. Studies have also shown that dogs have the ability to detect some cancers and other health problems in their owners (Clark).

1.Studies have shown that the children who grow up in homes with animals have a better ability to show empathy later and as adults. Pets are easy to communicate with, and their body language is much simpler than a human's. This simple body language allows children to learn to empathize with them, a skill they can carry with them as they go through life (Holistic Online, 2007). Every person needs physical touch, no matter what. We are made to thrive off of it. There are some people that for whatever reason are not comfortable with the physical touch of another human. Many of these people are those that have been either physically or sexually abused. The use of pet therapy allows them to have an experience touch in a very...show more content...

Communication with people increases mental stimulation. Other things that have been shown to increase mental stimulation include recalled memories and entertainment that is provided by animals. In atmospheres that feel depression or like an institution, just the presence of animals can make it seem much brighter. Additionally, animals increase amusement, laughter, and play for the individuals around them. These distractions from their current situation can decrease their feelings of isolation or alienation that go along with their situation (Holistic Online, 2007).

2.The program started at St. Mary's Hospital with just monthly group visits of one dog. This program has proved effective and beneficial and has evolved to using several dogs three or four times a month. They still use the dogs in a group setting, but also include individual visits to the patient's room and bedside (Oakley, Kid Needs). When an occupational therapist uses animals in their therapy the patient, in this case a child, will be either in their wheelchair or on a therapy mat. If the child is recovering from a brain injury and is experiencing difficulty grooming themselves due to loss of function in an arm, the therapist will ask the child to use their weak arm to pet or brush the dog. As the limb grows stronger, they may add a weight to the wrist to increase their strength. They can also use an adapted brush if the child is having

A bus carrying several clinical students from the local college pulls up in front of the nursing home. The students begin to unload some boxes which contain puppies and kittens ranging in age from three to six months. Once inside, the students begin to pass the puppies and kittens out to the patients that are waiting expectantly in the recreation room. Some patients are alone, some are in groups, but all are delighted to see the animals arrive. As the animals are being passed out, the patients begin smiling, laughing, and talking to the animals. They stroke their coats, play with them, and feed them snacks that they have saved for this occasion. While the patients are interacting with other students and...show more content...

Resident pets, however, give the elderly people more time to experience the benefits that could come from ongoing human–animal relationships. Research by Corson & Corson has shown that these programs may assist patients with social skills, increased self esteem and becoming more independent and responsible (216). The most frequently mentioned benefit of resident pets was the overall level of patient responsiveness. Specifically, as nonjudgmental companions, the pets served as a catalyst and outlet for affection. They also gave the patients additional opportunities to express and receive love, and elicited tenderness and kindness (Brickel 370).

Two studies of the elderly by Garrity, Ory, and Goldberg found that greater attachment to a pet was associated with better mental health and also better physical health when human companionship was inadequate (Siegel 1085). Life events arousing needs for companionship in the elderly have resulted in increased doctor contacts. These may have occurred because the doctor provided the companionship needed, or the desperate need for companionship triggers some health concern. Pet owners have their companionship needs filled mostly by their pets. In addition, research has shown pet involvement was higher if the pet was a dog. Apparently, dog owners have a more special relationship with their pets than do owners of other animals. Dog owners reported spending more time Get

Benefits of Pets Essay

Pets can be very both physically and emotionally beneficial to their owners. Living with and caring for them can also be a great experience and very entertaining. Even browsing YouTube, thousands of pet owners record their little friend's amusing tricks and humorous incidents to share with the world. Although these videos or pictures can encourage your desire for a similar companion, many details to keeping an animal of that sort may not be evident. There is a huge variety of species available, from tarantulas to munchkin cats, with many ways to obtain them, but not everyone can handle a giant arachnid or endure changing kitty litter. Even with the wide ranging selection, it is imperative to know how to choose a pet that suits you....show more content...

Discussing questions related to a certain species with experienced owners will give you more of an insight as to what the animal requires and sometimes discover issues you haven't considered. Secondly, make sure you are able to provide adequate care for the animal you are thinking of giving a home to. Sufficient housing is vital but another aspect of providing an adequate home is how much it generally costs to own a certain pet. If you are considering a dog or cat, they tend to be more costly than most pets due to amount of food needed, vaccinations, veterinary bills, boarding, spaying/neutering etc... A snake or gecko are a bit more simple depending on the specific species, but finding a veterinarian that treats reptiles can be hard and costly if your small creature becomes ill. Another aspect most future pet owners do not consider is the life span of the pet you want. A cockatoo may seem to fit your life style but will you be able to maintain the care for a creature who lives as long as you do or would a rat with a general life span of three years be suitable? This will also avoid an upsetting experience if your animal doesn't live long or having to give up your companion due to living situation changes. Aside from cost and life span, it is very important that you check your local laws and with your landlord to avoid having to relinquish the companion due to conflicts

Owning a Pet

Having a pet is a wonderful idea. Pets bring companionship, personality, and gut wrenching humor to households across the world. Having previously owned both a cat and a dog, and currently being without a pet, I began to think about getting a new furry friend. Born a dog lover, and bred into a cat lover, I had the difficult decision of choosing one of the two.

When I was twenty–two years old, I answered an advertisement in the paper for free Labrador puppies. Driving up to the house, I saw all the little critters running around and having a ball of a time. I got into the pen with the pups, and finally decided on the shy runt who spent the majority of his time hiding under a board. I loved his personality and instantly...show more content...

I never could quite figure out Vegas' love of the window. I understood there was a lot of action going on that he was taking in: the birds flying by and the squirrels climbing trees, but it was like the window screen was his safety net, and everything outside of that was hot lava. If I even tried to carry him outside the door he would instantly tense up, claw into my shoulder, and make a Carl Lewis leap back inside. I made the horrible mistake of purchasing a cat walking apparatus in an attempt to broaden his horizons. For the whole five minutes I had Vegas on the leash, he easily could have been misconceived as the Tasmanian devil.

On the other hand, Charlie was born to be walked. Or in his eyes, walk me. I could hardly get to his leash before he was tackling me to go. Charlie had a set path he enjoyed taking every night, including strategically hitting up the same elderly couples, who would spend there evenings porch watching, for his dinner leftover treat. For those who didn't give him a treat, well, he had a treat of his own for them.

Charlie enjoyed getting out and around, smelling the world outside his own, and I always felt bad about keeping him in such a small yard. Plus, with such a small yard, keeping up with the packages Charlie left in his own yard was quite a chore. Whereas Vegas, like most cats, did his business efficiently in the same square liter

Pets As Children : Pets

Pets As Children

We sleep with them, dress them up, talk to them, and plan our daily lives around them: pets. Nowadays, people are treating their pets as if they were their own children. They may even treat them better than their actual family members. This most commonly occurs with people who have a dog. It may be common among other types of pet owners, as well, but I am going to just talk about dog owners and what they do that makes it seem as thought their dogs are actually their children. Couples without children are often the culprit of treating their dogs like their babies. However, it 's not just couples, but really anyone that owns a dog. Taking to them has become the normal thing to do with your pet. Pet owners will even talk to them as though they were talking to another human being. Perhaps after coming home from work, pet owners will tell their pet all about their day. Their problems and interesting stories are told to them, as though they would be able to respond. Clearly, they won 't respond, but that is no problem for their owners. They will just continue to talk to them, anyways. While telling these stories, they may even refer to themselves as "mommy" or "daddy". This is a very obvious way in which the dogs are like their children. Usually, only your children will call you "mommy" or "daddy", but pet owners have seen that they treat their pets as children, so they should see their owners as their parents. In movies, you always see rich girls who carry Get more
